Management Of Biodiversity: Creating Conceptual Space For Indigenous Conservation, Nicholas Herriman Mar 2018

Management Of Biodiversity: Creating Conceptual Space For Indigenous Conservation, Nicholas Herriman

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Indigenous people have, in recent decades, become increasingly involved in environmental conservation. Notwithstanding, some social science research has critiqued as problematic or untenable ideas (notably “Indigeneity” and “conservation”) that putatively underpin Indigenous conservation. But does the critique accurately characterize actual Indigenous conservation projects? And can we create conceptual space for Indigenous conservation? Based on experience participating in and observing Indigenous conservation projects, it appears that, partly by emphasizing human management of biodiversity, the projects avoided pitfalls identified by the critique. Future social science analysis might remain relevant by addressing the idea of management of biodiversity.

Naps And Sleep Deprivation: Why Academic Libraries Should Consider Adding Nap Stations To Their Services For Students, Mary Wise Mar 2018

Naps And Sleep Deprivation: Why Academic Libraries Should Consider Adding Nap Stations To Their Services For Students, Mary Wise

Library Scholarship

Since the invention of artificial light, people have been working, studying, and playing for longer hours than ever before. They are also sleeping less as a result. This article examines the impact of sleep deprivation on people generally, and specifically on college students. Students accrue a large sleep debt that impairs their ability to function adequately. Students suffering from sleep deprivation can be as impaired as if they are drunk. They suffer damage to their minds and bodies. Adequate sleep can repair this damage, but with the many demands on college students, they may be unlikely to be able to …

Vortioxetine Treatment Reverses Subchronic Pcp Treatment-Induced Cognitive Impairments: A Potential Role For Serotonin Receptor-Mediated Regulation Of Gaba Neurotransmission, Alan Pehrson, Christian S. Pedersen, Kirstine Sloth Tølbøl, Connie Sanchez Mar 2018

Vortioxetine Treatment Reverses Subchronic Pcp Treatment-Induced Cognitive Impairments: A Potential Role For Serotonin Receptor-Mediated Regulation Of Gaba Neurotransmission, Alan Pehrson, Christian S. Pedersen, Kirstine Sloth Tølbøl, Connie Sanchez

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with cognitive impairments that may contribute to poor functional outcomes. Clinical data suggests that the multimodal antidepressant vortioxetine attenuates some cognitive impairments in MDD patients, but the mechanistic basis for these improvements is unclear. One theory suggests that vortioxetine improves cognition by suppressing γ-amino butyric acid (GABA)ergic neurotransmission, thereby increasing glutamatergic activation. Vortioxetine's effects on cognition, GABA and glutamate neurotransmission have been supported in separate experiments, but no empirical work has directly connected vortioxetine's cognitive effects to those on GABA and glutamate neurotransmission. In this paper, we attempt to bridge this gap by evaluating …

Library Reports and Communication

Over the past decade, the University Libraries' Digital Collections have grown from an assemblage of discrete projects into two distinct programs that curate, manage, and publish digitized and born-digital materials online for educational and scholarly uses by Grand Valley State University's community and the wider public.

As these collections have grown, the support for creating, sharing, and preserving these materials has expanded from the Special Collections & University Archives into Systems and Technology Services, Knowledge Access and Resource Management Services, and Scholarly Communications, which manages the Libraries' other Digital Collection program, consisting of the Institutional Repository (IR) and a suite …

Compensation Negotiation And Corporate Governance: The Evidence From China, Xinjun Lyu, Christopher Decker, Jinlan Ni Mar 2018

Compensation Negotiation And Corporate Governance: The Evidence From China, Xinjun Lyu, Christopher Decker, Jinlan Ni

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper examines CEO pay dispersion for the listed companies in China. We apply a two-tier stochastic frontier model to the CEO compensation framework where asymmetric information generates a surplus between the minimum wage that CEOs accept and the maximum payment that firms offer. This surplus leads to CEO pay dispersion coming from the negotiation power between the CEO and the firm. We generate the surplus extracted by each CEO-firm pair and analyze how corporate governance affects them. An empirical analysis finds that: (1) On average, CEOs are paid 23.26% more than the benchmark; (2) additionally, we examine the bargaining …
