Exploring Internalized Classism Using The Regressive Model Of Self-Stigma, Johanna Collier Mar 2018

Exploring Internalized Classism Using The Regressive Model Of Self-Stigma, Johanna Collier

Dissertations

A growing body of literature on classism suggests that negative attitudes and treatment based on one’s social class may have wide-ranging impacts on one’s sense of self, behaviors, and well-being. Scholars have theorized that internalized classism may be eroding dignity and contributing to observed health disparities between those of higher and lower social classes, but little quantitative research has explored the subject. The present study attempted to address this gap in the literature by applying the regressive model of self-stigma, a model originally developed for internalized mental health stigma, to internalized classism to better understand how to define and measure …

Digitization On A Budget, Cara M. Key, Zachary G. Stein, Cheylon K. Woods

Faculty Publications

Archives and libraries are seen as public hubs of information on demand. As expectations for digital information grows, it is imperative that archives and libraries strive to accommodate users' growing needs for effective online access, while ensuring the longevity of digitized and born-digital primary sources. There is still a struggle for digital access to archival and special collections; many factors, such as time, funds, and administrative support limit the digitization of archival collections. None of these things have to be a real hindrance to digital migration and preservation. In this presentation, we will explore "DIY" ways to establish a functioning …

Effects Of Neonatal Handling On Play And Anxiety In F344 And Lewis Rats, Stephen M. Siviy Mar 2018

Effects Of Neonatal Handling On Play And Anxiety In F344 And Lewis Rats, Stephen M. Siviy

Psychology Faculty Publications

Play is an important part of normal childhood development and seen in many mammals, including rats. To better understand the interplay between genotype and postnatal experiences, the effects of neonatal handling on play were assessed in Lewis (LEW) and Fischer 344 (F344) rats. Handled litters experienced brief periods of separation during the first two postnatal weeks. F344 rats were less likely to direct nape contacts toward an untreated Sprague–Dawley (SD) partner and less likely to rotate to a supine position in response to a nape contact. When compared to rats from control litters, handled LEW, and F344 rats were more …

Multidimensional Ethno-Racial Status In Contexts Of Mestizaje: Ethno-Racial Stratification In Contemporary Peru, Cristian L. Paredes Mar 2018

Multidimensional Ethno-Racial Status In Contexts Of Mestizaje: Ethno-Racial Stratification In Contemporary Peru, Cristian L. Paredes

Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this study, I define ethno-racial status as the combination of socially ranked ethnic and racial characteristics individually embodied by mestizos (Spanish for mixed-race individuals). I argue that these characteristics represent distinct dimensions of ethno-racial status—phenotype, ancestry, and self-identification—and should be considered together when analyzing ethno-racial inequality in contexts of mestizaje. Moreover, I interpret self-identification as exposure to pervasive beliefs that give meaning to local ethno-racial identities rather than explaining it as a central indicator of race. Using nationally representative data of Peru, the mestizaje research setting, I examine whether there are significant differences in educational attainment and household …

Transit Demand Analysis And User Classification Using Automatic Fare Collection (Afc) Data, Alireza Khani

PSU Transportation Seminars

Development of origin-destination demand matrices is crucial for transit planning. The development process is facilitated by transit automated data, making it possible to mine boarding and alighting patterns on an individual basis. This research proposes a novel stochastic trip chaining method which uses Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) and General Transit Feed Specifications (GTFS) data to infer an origin-destination (O-D) matrix.

Advancing Digital Equity In Public Libraries: Assessing Library Patrons’ Problem Solving In Technology Rich Environments, Gloria Jacobs

Presentations and Publications

This mixed methods research examined the digital problem solving processes of vulnerable adults within the community setting of a public library. Data were collected from approximately 450 library users who completed a library survey, a subset who completed PIAACs Problem Solving in Technology Rich Environments (PSTRE) assessment, and a smaller subset who participated in an observation protocol. Quantitative analysis revealed that library website use was a strong predictor of PSTRE scores. Qualitative analysis showed that digital problem solving needs to be seen as a set of contexts and events that are dynamic across different situations. In order to respond to …

The following article contains a compilation of studies that examined police bias and the citizen’s race to determine if officers are influenced by the citizen’s race when making discretionary decisions. When officers use race to make discretionary decisions, this can negatively impact the relationship between the police and its citizens. It is important to understand that the studies discussed have their limitations therefore more research is needed to produce reliable results. Some researchers have suggested that officers have been influenced by race, …

Social Identity Theory And Public Opinion Towards Immigration, Maurice Mangum, Ray Block Jr. Mar 2018

Social Identity Theory And Public Opinion Towards Immigration, Maurice Mangum, Ray Block Jr.

Political Science Faculty Publications

Several scholars have called upon social identity theory to investigate the relationship between an American national identity and American public opinion on immigration. Lacking a uniform measure of American identity, by and large, scholars find that a two-dimensional conception of American identity influences these opinions. Our review suggests that the extant measures of American identity do not fully account for the various aspects of social identity theory. We capture more fully the different components of social identity theory. By doing so, we find that American identity has five dimensions. Therefore, in this analysis, we advance a more comprehensive measure of …

Student Success + Design Thinking, Amy Vecchione, Karina Smith Mar 2018

Student Success + Design Thinking, Amy Vecchione, Karina Smith

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Students struggle for a variety of reasons. School systems are complex areas to navigate, and often times, school success is defined by how well a student can navigate the cultural and societal landscape of a school or university. Makerspaces are well-equipped to work with this population as experiential learning relies on the experiences and knowledge acquired through fixing and making. This offers leadership opportunities for at-risk and at-promise students. By working with these students to help them design library services, and makerspaces, they can improve services for everyone.

Design thinking workshops empower these students to generate new ways that the …

Bioacoustics Collection

Passive acoustic sensing has emerged as a powerful tool for quantifying anthropogenic impacts on biodiversity, especially for echolocating bat species. To better assess bat population trends there is a critical need for accurate, reliable, and open source tools that allow the detection and classification of bat calls in large collections of audio recordings. The majority of existing tools are commercial or have focused on the species classification task, neglecting the important problem of first localizing echolocation calls in audio which is particularly problematic in noisy recordings. We developed a convolutional neural network based open-source pipeline for detecting ultrasonic, full-spectrum, search-phase …

Understanding Unconventional Methods Of Self-Disclosure In New Relationships, Brandon Lepard Mar 2018

Understanding Unconventional Methods Of Self-Disclosure In New Relationships, Brandon Lepard

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Previous literature on the subject of self-disclosure in new relationships has failed to go into depth about the reasons why negatively-valenced self-disclosure can draw people closer together. In this study, the impact of personality type on the relational success of unconventional methods of self-disclosure is explored. The participants of the study were eight male, caucasian college-aged students who were each individually interviewed. The results of the study show that that personality type can play a large role in the relational success of such unconventional disclosure techniques, as well as the relational trajectory. Extraverts were more likely to positively react to …

Predicting Potential Fire Severity Using Vegetation, Topography And Surface Moisture Availability In A Eurasian Boreal Forest Landscape, Lei Fang, Jian Yang, Megan White, Zhihua Liu

Forestry and Natural Resources Faculty Publications

Severity of wildfires is a critical component of the fire regime and plays an important role in determining forest ecosystem response to fire disturbance. Predicting spatial distribution of potential fire severity can be valuable in guiding fire and fuel management planning. Spatial controls on fire severity patterns have attracted growing interest, but few studies have attempted to predict potential fire severity in fire-prone Eurasian boreal forests. Furthermore, the influences of fire weather variation on spatial heterogeneity of fire severity remain poorly understood at fine scales. We assessed the relative importance and influence of pre-fire vegetation, topography, and surface moisture availability …
