Group-Based Songwriting With Adolescents In A Partial Hospitalization Program, Jonathan Blake
Group-Based Songwriting With Adolescents In A Partial Hospitalization Program, Jonathan Blake
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The growing field of music therapy aims to help those who suffer from an array of disorders, anxieties, and diagnoses using a wide collection of interventions and activities. Songwriting has been a useful tool for music therapists for many years. Popular interventions that utilize lyric replacement, fill-in-the-blank or Mad Lib style, and improvisational blues songwriting, have been very effective across a range of populations including children, adolescents, and the elderly. This project aims to bridge a gap in the research by implementing an original idea, which I devised, which encouraged clients to engage organically in a group setting. This intervention …

Environmental Costs Of European Union Membership: A Structural Decomposition Analysis, Inácio Araúgo, Randall Jackson, Amir Borges Ferreira Neto, Fernando Perobelli
Environmental Costs Of European Union Membership: A Structural Decomposition Analysis, Inácio Araúgo, Randall Jackson, Amir Borges Ferreira Neto, Fernando Perobelli
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
The interest in this paper lies in the environmental costs of the European Union (EU). EU membership requires a series of economic and political changes that should impact the country’s production and consumption structures and its trade relationships. These, in turn, will affect CO2 emissions sources and levels. This is especially true for the former Soviet Union countries that recently joined the EU, given the difference in their levels of development and production structure. Using a structural decomposition analysis we are able to quantify the main drivers of changes in emissions differentiating six components, namely: emissions intensity, industrial structure and …
The Effects Of Psychological Home And Place Attachment On Life Satisfaction In Women Of Color, Kendall Patricia Crum
The Effects Of Psychological Home And Place Attachment On Life Satisfaction In Women Of Color, Kendall Patricia Crum
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
The cognitive judgments individuals make to evaluate their quality of life (i.e. life satisfaction), are vital to understanding how individuals perceive their overall well-being. Predictors, such as, gender, ethnicity, and external environmental factors may influence life satisfaction. Few studies examined the relations between psychological home, place attachment, and life satisfaction. The present study was the first to examine these concepts in women of color. For the present study, data were taken from a larger nationwide study of 1,394 adults (M = 53.94 years old) examining the relationship between home, clutter, and well-being. The current study explored the influence of …

Background: Change in the prevalence of raised blood pressure could be due to both shifts in the entire distribution of blood pressure (representing the combined effects of public health interventions and secular trends) and changes in its high-blood-pressure tail (representing successful clinical interventions to control blood pressure in the hypertensive population). Our aim was to quantify the contributions of these two phenomena to the worldwide trends in the prevalence of raised blood pressure. Methods: We pooled 1018 population-based studies with blood pressure measurements on 88.6 million participants from 1985 to 2016. We first calculated mean systolic blood pressure (SBP), mean …
Variation In Emotion Eliciting Events And Display Rules As A Function Of Individualism And Collectivism: A Cross Cultural Comparison Of Pakistanis And Americans, Serah Saleem Fatani
Variation In Emotion Eliciting Events And Display Rules As A Function Of Individualism And Collectivism: A Cross Cultural Comparison Of Pakistanis And Americans, Serah Saleem Fatani
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Culture not only influences the conditions under which we will experience an emotion, but also may have bearing on its manner of outward expression. This study investigated cultural differences in the construction of emotion-eliciting events and the associated display rules for exhibiting those emotional responses to others within the context of the cultural classification system known as Individualism/Collectivism (I/C) (Triandis, 1994, 1995; Triandis et al., 1988). In this comparative study, individualists were represented by a sample of participants from the United States whereas collectivists were represented by a Pakistani participant sample.
I/C tendencies of the Pakistani and American respondents were …
The Longitudinal Relation Between Housing Insecurity And Negative Parenting Practices, Saidah Chambers
The Longitudinal Relation Between Housing Insecurity And Negative Parenting Practices, Saidah Chambers
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
National and state level data show that families experiencing housing insecurity, especially homelessness, exhibit higher rates of child welfare involvement as compared to low-income housed families; and suggest that certain factors may increase risk of child welfare involvement for housing insecure families. The interplay between housing insecurity, social support, and depression can affect family systems in several ways including through financial and emotional transactions; however, the relation between these factors and the range of housing problems remains unclear. This dissertation assessed how negative parenting practices were impacted by the complexity of circumstances that converge under the umbrella of housing insecurity. …
Globalizing Pakistani Identity Across The Border: The Politics Of Crossover Stardom In The Hindi Film Industry, Dina Khdair
Globalizing Pakistani Identity Across The Border: The Politics Of Crossover Stardom In The Hindi Film Industry, Dina Khdair
College of Communication Theses and Dissertations
Few studies have examined how the changing landscape of cultural production in India shapes the negotiation of religious and national identities onscreen in an increasingly integrated media environment. This dissertation explores the representation and reception of three crossover stars in India: Ali Zafar, Fawad Khan, and Mahira Khan. These stars embody a new global imaginary for Pakistan that contradicts the ghettoized depictions of Pakistan as a terrorist state that continue to be perpetuated in both India and the West. What does it mean to be a Pakistani star in India, and which ‘identity’ takes precedence in popular discourse – national …
An Exploration Of Power, Race, And Higher Education: A Cross-Cultural Parallel Narrative, Book Review, Kathleen Rose Mcgovern
An Exploration Of Power, Race, And Higher Education: A Cross-Cultural Parallel Narrative, Book Review, Kathleen Rose Mcgovern
The Qualitative Report
Power, Race, and Higher Education: A Cross-Cultural Parallel Narrative by Kakali Bhattacharya and Norman K. Gillen (Kent) provides readers with scenarios from the authors’ personal and academic lives through which they explore the major themes of the book (2016). These themes include researcher positionality, presenting research through ethnodrama, navigating academia, and pedagogical approaches to examining privilege. This review recommends the book for professors working with Master’s students or undergraduates to facilitate reflection on their positionality in relation to their students (in the case of pre-service teachers) or research participants.

Policing The Riverfront: Urban Revanchism As Sustainability, Jared J. Austin
Policing The Riverfront: Urban Revanchism As Sustainability, Jared J. Austin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
An unnoticed shift is underway in the revanchist model of accumulation by dispossession (Harvey, 2005) that is rebranding the neoliberal reorganization of space and economic growth. I call this shift “Urban Revanchism as Sustainability,” following Mike Davis and Daniel Monk (2007). In this study, I describe how Tampa elites, led by Democratic Mayor Bob Buckhorn, use politically popular discourses of ‘sustainability’, ‘walkability’, ‘bike-ability’, among others, to coopt the rhetoric and symbols of social and environmental justice as cover for urban capital accumulation. I describe how in the wake of 2008 which devastated Tampa, and in the context of the subsequent …

A Clean, Green New Zealand? An In-Depth Look At The Personal Experiences Of Animal Rights Activists, Svetlana Feigin, Richard Glynn Owens, Felicity Goodyear-Smith
The Qualitative Report
This study explored personal experiences of animal rights and environmental activists in New Zealand. The stories of participants provided insight into the challenges activists face in a country where the economy is heavily dependent on animal agriculture. A qualitative methodology was utilised and several major themes emerged: (1) emotional and psychological experiences, (2) group membership, (3) characteristics of activism and liberation, (4) the law and its agents, and (5) challenge to society. Participants of the study represent a group of individuals engaged in acts of altruistic offending triggered by exposure to the suffering of non-human animals. Their moral philosophy and …

Evolutionary Game Theory Perspective On Dynamic Spectrum Access Etiquette, Mohammad Abu Shattal, Anna Wisniewska, Ala Al-Fuqaha, Bilal Khan, Kirk Dombrowski
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
In this paper, we describe the long-term evolution of societies of secondary users in dynamic spectrum access networks. Such an understanding is important to help us anticipate future trends in the organization of large-scale distributed networked deployments. Such deployments are expected to arise in support of a wide variety of applications, including vehicular networks and the Internet of Things. Two new biologically-inspired spectrum access strategies are presented here, and compared with a random access baseline strategy. The proposed strategies embody a range of plausible assumptions concerning the sensing capabilities and social characteristics of individual secondary users. Considering these strategies as …

Exploring Screen Time Habits And The Life Empowerment Divide At An Hbcu, Kim Smith, Tobin Walton, Alvin Keyes
Faculty Publications
College students at a historically black university used their social media accounts to recruit 1,232 of their peers to take an online survey that explored digital screen time and social media habits at this HBCU. The study revealed that 51% devoted daily screen time to academic empowerment, 31% devoted it to leisure, and 11% devoted it to life empowerment. Sixty-six percent said they spent too much screen time on leisure and not enough on life empowerment, i.e., using resources in the digital world to improve their lives. The paper explored the divide, its implications, and how to narrow it.
Creating Systems Of Continuous Improvement: A Phenomenological Study Of California Districts Engaged In Transforming Into Learning Organizations, Kira Shearer
Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to describe the experiences of district teams that created and implemented systems of continuous improvement as part of the Systems Leadership Collaborative using the Coherence Framework.
Methodology: This phenomenological study used semi-structured interviews to provide a narrative of four California school districts’ experiences with the transformation process. Data were collected from interviews and coded for patterns and themes, using Fullan and Quinn’s (2015) Coherence Framework for analysis.
Findings: Key findings illustrated that selecting 2-3 actionable goals to focus and guide the district, creating collaborative structures, and developing collective capacity are key …
