Nineteenth-Century Depictions Of Disabilities And Modern Metadata: A Consideration Of Material In The P. T. Barnum Digital Collection, Meghan R. Rinn

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

The Library of Congress subject headings have been examined in the past for their classification of subjects relating to race, gender, and sexuality. Overlooked is subject headings that relate to disabilities. In the course of creating records for the archival and object material that form the P.T. Barnum Digital Collection, the project discovered the imperfections of the Library of Congress subject headings, and the need to develop standards and protocols for the material. This resulted in a balance of language that respects the preferences of living communities and their best practices, and the existing language in the Library of Congress, …

The Puppy And The Snapping Turtle, Rachel Robinson-Greene

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

On March 8, 2018, an abandoned, terminally ill puppy was brought into the classroom of Idaho high school science teacher Robert Crosland. Crosland, known for taking in sick animals, could tell that the puppy was beyond saving. After school, in front of a handful of his students, Crosland placed the sick puppy inside the tank of his snapping turtle. It drowned and was then eaten by the turtle. Crosland was reported for animal cruelty. The snapping turtle, a member of an invasive species, was confiscated and euthanized by the Department of Agriculture.

Fear Of Victimization Among Incarcerated Youths: Examining The Effects Of Institutional “Neighborhood” Characteristics And Gang Membership, Jodi Lane, Gaylene Armstrong, Kathleen A. Fox Mar 2018

Fear Of Victimization Among Incarcerated Youths: Examining The Effects Of Institutional “Neighborhood” Characteristics And Gang Membership, Jodi Lane, Gaylene Armstrong, Kathleen A. Fox

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This study examines whether neighborhood factors found to predict fear of crime among the general population can be adapted to explain inmate fear of victimization inside juvenile correctional institutions. We test (a) whether institutional physical disorder, resident trust, and formal social control can predict fear of victimization, and (b) whether the importance of these factors for fear of victimization varies based on preincarceration street gang status. Using data from a large national sample of incarcerated youths, findings indicate non-gang members are more afraid of institutional victimization than gang members, confirming findings about levels of fear between these groups on the …

Urban Geocomputation: Two Studies On Urban Form And Its Role In Altering Climate, Jackson Lee Voelkel Mar 2018

Urban Geocomputation: Two Studies On Urban Form And Its Role In Altering Climate, Jackson Lee Voelkel

Dissertations and Theses

Our climate and our cities are changing. Though their changes are not completely dependent upon one another, there is still a coupling effect between them. This study assesses the role of urban form as it pertains to elements of climate change. It is comprised of two essays intended for publication. The first of these essays addresses the feedbacks between urban form, energy consumption, and rising global temperatures. The second essay looks at one particular factor of urban form--tree type--as it pertains to air pollution and urban heat island mitigation. Both papers use the analytical approaches necessary to answer the questions …

Leveraging Student Employee Expertise For Collection Projects, Karen A. Reiman-Sendi, Christopher A. Barnes, Pamela J. Mackintosh Mar 2018

Leveraging Student Employee Expertise For Collection Projects, Karen A. Reiman-Sendi, Christopher A. Barnes, Pamela J. Mackintosh

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Collection stewardship responsibilities of academic librarians continue to be supported by approval plans, large e-resource packages, and material leasing programs. But while those technologies and programs can save time, librarians still find it challenging to engage with in-depth collection projects like systematic weeding, evaluation, and use analysis. At the same time, student employees are seeking opportunities for experiential learning and acquiring skills translatable to the professional world. The authors suggest some creative ways to match librarians’ collection needs and students’ job expectations by providing opportunities for these employees to collaborate with librarians in the management, development, and marketing of collections.

Getting Power Back: Court Restoration Of Executive Authority In Boston City Government (1985), Marcy Murninghan Mar 2018

Getting Power Back: Court Restoration Of Executive Authority In Boston City Government (1985), Marcy Murninghan

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article, originally published in 1985, is based partly on the author’s experience with the Boston school desegregation case, but goes beyond it. It chronicles some of the events that occurred when a state and a federal court attempted to disengage from active jurisdiction over two Boston public systems: the Boston Public Schools and the Boston Housing Authority. It makes three proposals, which, if enacted, would help to keep the courts out of day-to-day management of municipal operations. It also makes some generalizations about the court-agency interplay that are relevant to the post-remedial phase of institutional reform litigation. The author …

Equity Culture And Decent Work: The Case Of Amazon (2017), Marcy Murninghan Mar 2018

Equity Culture And Decent Work: The Case Of Amazon (2017), Marcy Murninghan

New England Journal of Public Policy

Every year, publicly traded companies hold annual meetings at which management presents a summary of the year’s accomplishments and shareholders vote on a slate of ballot issues, referred to as “proxy resolutions,” that are placed there by either management or shareholders. As in public life, in theory this form of corporate governance relies on a division of authority and checks and balances among shareholders, the board of directors, and company management. In theory, shareholders function much like registered voters, boards serve as their elected representatives, and management operates much like the executive branch to carry out the mandates accorded to …

Full-Time Employment Not Always A Ticket To Health Insurance, Jess Carson Mar 2018

Full-Time Employment Not Always A Ticket To Health Insurance, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

In this brief, author Jessica Carson examines differences in health insurance coverage by workers’ income, and explores who is eligible for an employer-based plan, who enrolls in those plans, and the reasons why workers choose not to enroll. She reports that, in 2016, only 33 percent of low-income workers (those below 200 percent of the official poverty threshold) employed full time, year round reported having employer-based health insurance, compared to 57 percent of higher-income workers. Low-income workers are less often offered insurance: 40 percent of low-income workers work for employers who do not offer insurance to any employee, compared to …

Integrating Information Literacy And Evidence-Based Medicine Content Within A New School Of Medicine Curriculum: Process And Outcome, Joanne M. Muellenbach, Kathryn M. Houk, Dana E. Thimons, Bredny Rodriguez

Library Faculty Research

This column describes a process for integrating information literacy (IL) and evidence-based medicine (EBM) content within a new school of medicine curriculum. The project was a collaborative effort among health sciences librarians, curriculum deans, directors, and faculty. The health sciences librarians became members of the curriculum committees, developed a successful proposal for IL and EBM content within the curriculum, and were invited to become course instructors for Analytics in Medicine. As course instructors, the librarians worked with the other faculty instructors to design and deliver active learning class sessions based on a flipped classroom approach using a proprietary Information Mastery …

Low Agreement Among Reviewers Evaluating The Same Nih Grant Applications, Elizabeth L. Pier, Markus Brauer, Amarette Filut, Anna Kaatz, Joshua Raclaw, Mitchell J. Nathan, Cecilia E. Ford, Molly Carnes Mar 2018

Low Agreement Among Reviewers Evaluating The Same Nih Grant Applications, Elizabeth L. Pier, Markus Brauer, Amarette Filut, Anna Kaatz, Joshua Raclaw, Mitchell J. Nathan, Cecilia E. Ford, Molly Carnes

English Faculty Publications

Obtaining grant funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is increasingly competitive, as funding success rates have declined over the past decade. To allocate relatively scarce funds, scientific peer reviewers must differentiate the very best applications from comparatively weaker ones. Despite the importance of this determination, little research has explored how reviewers assign ratings to the applications they review and whether there is consistency in the reviewers’ evaluation of the same application. Replicating all aspects of the NIH peer-review process, we examined 43 individual reviewers’ ratings and written critiques of the same group of 25 NIH grant applications. Results …

Implementation Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy In A Residential Setting: Dissemination And Evaluation, Amber M. Holbrook, Susan Hunt, Jehan Morsi Mar 2018

Implementation Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy In A Residential Setting: Dissemination And Evaluation, Amber M. Holbrook, Susan Hunt, Jehan Morsi

Social Work (Graduate) Faculty Publications

The use of evidence-based practices (EBPs) in social services is gaining momentum as the standard of care. However, many residential settings employ individuals without advanced formal education and training as Direct Service Professionals (DSPs). Typically, these lower-level workers provide the majority of daily care to the more challenged clients, often leading to poorer quality of client care, staff burnout, and high staff turnover rates [1]. The use of EBPs has the potential to mitigate poor client and staff outcomes in such settings when appropriate training can support fidelity to the intervention model. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is demonstrated to be …
