Mentorship As A Protective Factor For Children With A History Of Paternal Incarceration, Lorietta Hardin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
With a univocal number of parents in correctional confinement, children of incarcerated fathers are at risk for negative outcomes ranging from increased family strain to increased behavior problems and unfavorable school outcomes. Prior research suggested these obstacles occurred due to parental incarceration that creates a vulnerable group of children. However, few researchers have analyzed the impact of mentorship for children of incarcerated fathers. Elucidating the effects of mentorship for these children is crucial to changing the life trajectory for children with a history of paternal incarceration.
The current study examined behavioral and school outcomes of children who have and have …

School Counselors' Role In Reducing Aggression In Children In Alternative Education Programs, Deirdra Sanders-Burnett
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite efforts to reduce the occurrence of physical aggression in traditional school environments, some students persist in engaging in physical aggression and are assigned to alternative education programs as an alternative to expulsion. However, relatively little is known about the types of services that school counselors provide to help these students. This case study investigated the services that school counselors provide to the young children attending disciplinary alternative education programs in a public-school district in central Florida. The participants consist of two school counselors who provided services to the students assigned to the alternative disciplinary programs and two district-level administrators …

Strategic Negligence: Why The United States Failed To Provide Military Support To The Syrian Resistance In 2011-2014, Konrad J. Trautman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The US military’s culture, structure, and process for providing advice to the president and his national security decision-making team are flawed due to the marginalization of unconventional warfare (UW) expertise -- UW is the military’s doctrinal term for support to resistance activities and movements. This marginalization results in inadequate consideration for applying UW as a strategic option for the nation.
Through a qualitative methods case study analysis utilizing macro- and micro-level process-tracing with a conceptual framework based on Niklas Luhmann’s Systems Theory, the author shows that viable and acceptable resistance elements existed in Syria in March 2011 to June 2014 …
Manipulating Relative Lmx: Effects On Performance, Conflict, And Strain, Keaton A. Fletcher
Manipulating Relative Lmx: Effects On Performance, Conflict, And Strain, Keaton A. Fletcher
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fundamental to the conceptualization of leader-membership exchange (LMX), particularly within the context of teams, is that leaders do not necessarily treat each follower equally. Studies that have examined LMX within the context of the team often fail to capture these complexities, or rely exclusively upon self-report, or survey-based data to make inferences. Therefore, it is the purpose of this study to examine the effects of experimentally manipulated relative LMX within teams on individual conflict processes, attitudes, and psychological distress, as well as team-level performance. This study examined conflict processes and outcomes within 113 virtual, project teams engaged in a decision-making …

Identifying Stress Variables Linking Socioeconomic Status And Smoking, Aaron French Waters
LSU Master's Theses
Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death accounting for approximately 480,000 deaths every year (Jamal et al., 2015). Across the socioeconomic status gradient smoking prevalence differs greatly, with those of lower socioeconomic status smoking at much higher rates. Within the literature relationships have been identified between socioeconomic status, stress variables, and smoking. However, little research has explored the possibility of stress variables mediating the relationship between socioeconomic status and smoking. The goal of the current study was to identify stress variables linking socioeconomic status and smoking in order to identify variables to address in cessation programs for …

Information Literacy And Mathematics Education Students: A Case Study In Library Instruction, M. H. Albro, K. Megan Sheffield, Anne Grant, Renna Tuten Redd
Publications
Prior to 2016 library instruction for mathematics courses was nonexistent at Shippensburg University. The hiring of the STEM librarian in August 2016 led to an initiative to engage the mathematics faculty and students in using resources and services offered by the Ezra Lehman Memorial Library. This outreach resulted in two sessions of the Fundamentals of Mathematics course coming into the library for instruction in the fall semester. These first sessions found that detailed instruction in how to search and identify articles related to key concepts from the desired journal type was particularly useful to the students; however, these sessions also …

Representations Of Feminist Theory And Gender Issues In Introductory-Level Sociology Textbooks, Jena Amber Zarza
Dissertations and Theses
A review of sociological literature reveals a long history of the study of gender, and an increased popularity in the application of feminist theories and ideas to sociological research. As transmitters of the discipline, introductory-level textbooks have been heavily studied over the past quarter-century to assess the accuracy with which they portray the field of sociology. In order to update the literature available on the topic, this study analyzed the current cohort of top-selling, introductory-level sociology textbooks for coverage of feminist theory and gender issues. Each of the ten textbooks was read cover-to-cover and coded for both latent and manifest …

History Of Journalism Education: An Analysis Of 100 Years Of Journalism Education, Hilary Akers Dunn
LSU Master's Theses
This quantitative content analysis uses course descriptions to find changes in journalism education at the University of Missouri, Louisiana State University, and the University of North Carolina over 100 years. This study found that there are two influencing factors that are inherent to the journalism profession: advances in technology and the maturity of the profession itself. These two influencing factors produced changes in technology used in curriculum, course focus (e.g. skill, theory, general knowledge, and history), and course topics (e.g. advertising, broadcasting, public relations, etc.) This study also found that leadership is the most influential factor of change in journalism …

Drug Overdose Rates Are Highest In Places With The Most Economic And Family Distress, Shannon M. Monnat
Carsey Publications
In this brief, author Shannon Monnat examines county-level mortality data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pooled for 2006–2015, to gain insight into the U.S. drug overdose problem. She reports that, unlike the news media’s regular portrayal of the drug overdose epidemic being a national crisis, some places have much higher drug mortality rates than others. On average, rates are higher in counties with higher levels of economic distress and family dissolution, and they are lower in counties with a larger per capita presence of religious establishments. These findings hold even when controlling for demographic differences, urban …
