International Debt Impact On The Value Of South Korean Currency, Wonjin Song
2018 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity – Documents
Abstract
This paper will analyze how international debt for South Korea affected the value of Korean currency from 1983 to 2014 by using the Ordinary Least Square model. The result is that international debt for South Korea had a clear influence on the value of Korean Won. The exchange rate of Korean currency per US dollar moves the same direction as amounts of international debt. In other words, as the Korean Won depreciates, more Won must be spent to purchase U.S dollars. That is, Korean currency depreciates when amounts of international debt increase. As the result, Korea has not yet …

Since 2002, the satirical investigative television show Fiks Fare (“Right On!" or “Exactly”) has aired immediately after prime-time news at a leading national broadcasting network in Albania. Through sting operations and cynical satire, the show tells the raw story of everyday experiences of corruption in Albanian society-from daily interactions with low-level public administration officers to the backroom deals of high-level officials. Over the years, Fiks Fare has endured as an effective whistle-blower in a country notorious for a lack of prosecutions and convictions on corruption charges. In this article, I explore the effects of this unlikely anti-corruption agent by drawing …

Honors Projects in Economics
This paper is threefold in purpose; it aims to explore the relationship between the growth of manufacturing and service sectors and income inequality, determine if GDP growth helps reduce income inequality, and establish the existence of the Kuznets Curve from 1967-2017. The data supports an inverse relationship between growth in the manufacturing sector and income inequality however is not sufficient enough to conclude growth in the manufacturing sector impacts income inequality. Growth of GDP is shown to decrease income inequality which supports the notion that “a rising tide lifts all boats” and makes everyone better off than before. The positive …

Nevertheless, She Legislated: A Study Of Women Representing Women In Congress, Meghan Mullon
All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019
Though women make up only a small fraction of the nation’s legislature, they are often stronger legislators than their male colleagues. Scholars have also found that, over time, these women pay more attention to issues considered more salient to women voters than their male counterparts do. But do women legislators provide better substantive representation to women in the electorate in comparison to men? This study utilizes methodology outlined by Frisch and Kelly (2003) to determine patterns in congresswomen’s committee assignments, and methodology utilized by Michele Swers (2002b) to determine whether women serving in the 111th, 113th, …

This ethnography describes how Black people adapt to life in China and how they deal with the various meanings imposed on their bodies by Chinese society. In five chapters, I describe why Black people move to China, how they form relationships and find communities, and how Black people interact with Chinese society. In China, one’s Blackness is salient because it is the defining attribute that sets people of African origin apart. Moreover, even though most Black expatriates are only in China for a temporary period, there are more Black people traveling to China overall, creating a critical mass to demonstrate …

If your institution does not have a plan in place, or if the plan has not been updated in three or more years, this is an excellent time to get to work.
The Impact Of Real Interest Rate On Real Exchange Rate: Empirical Evidence From Japan, Tomiwa Shodipe
The Impact Of Real Interest Rate On Real Exchange Rate: Empirical Evidence From Japan, Tomiwa Shodipe
2018 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity – Documents
Abstract
This paper examines the impact of real interest rate on the real exchange rate in Japan using Two Stage Least Square econometric techniques. The two instruments used are money supply and gross domestic product growth rates. The result provides support for the theoretical and empirical evidences of positive relationship between real interest rate and real exchange rate in Japan. The estimation also shows that there is positive relation between trade and Japanese Yen over the period considered in the study. In light of these findings, the study suggests the adoption of fiscal macroeconomic policy instruments that are capable of …

This project introduces students to hands-on, experience-building, smart-transportation hardware and software. After completing the project, students will gain practical experience with integrating a set of inexpensive, commercial computer components to deliver a ready-to-install system that can extend the transportation grid of a city. They will also learn how to program the system to give bike riders and pedestrians in their community new power. Specifically, the system they build can give bicyclists and pedestrians a virtual push-button, allowing them to place a call for a green light prior to reaching an intersection, thus giving them the actual green light when they …

Given the prevalence of gambling and preponderance of gaming options, efforts to curb problem gambling and promote responsible play for recreational players are of value. The current experiment analyzed choice behavior in the context of blackjack, the associated odds produced by these choices, and the influence of accurate rules (instructions) regarding gameplay. Results found novice players deviate significantly from optimal strategy and adjusted payout rates change as a function of this deviation. For these players, the predicted losses incurred following such strategies deviated significantly from the anticipated outcomes predicted by the odds that are commonly advertised. The personal savings rate is identified as an average savings rate for the individual American. The current rate is 5.7%, and that means for every $100 of after tax income an American brings in, he or she saves 5.7% of it. Since the 1980’s Americans have been saving less and less possibly because there more comfortable with their wealth. Looking forward though we try to identify in an environment where the cost of living will be rising, and the interest rates will be rising, will Americans face fiscal troubles if they don’t start saving more now? One thing we can …
