What Does Embarrassment Have To Do With Our Choice Of Brands?, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

Everyone experiences moments of embarrassment – when their credit cards are rejected at the checkout, they are wearing their T-shirt inside out, or have to buy tampons or condoms in a store.

When people are embarrassed it is only natural they behave differently to try to make themselves feel better. But how do they cope with feeling embarrassed? What types of strategies do they adopt and how does all this relate to their self-esteem?

Plugged In: Identifying Open (& Subscribed) Access, Aaron Tay Apr 2018

Plugged In: Identifying Open (& Subscribed) Access, Aaron Tay

Research Collection Library

Scholars have unprecedented access to subscription and open access (OA) content, yet figuring out how to discover and access legitimate versions of articles remains an aggravating experience for many researchers. They face authentication hoops, myriad vendor platforms with uncertain holdings, and mystifying an obscure OA source. Researchers that start with Google Scholar may bypass library authentication and face paywalls. Conversely, library discovery tools fail to expose and deliver much of the available OA content, and especially under-represent Green OA from repositories. Our panel discusses several approaches to improving access discovery by giving scholars tools to identify accessible content and using …

The Privileged Link: Open Access, Version Of Record, Or Let The User Decide?, Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, Aaron Tay, Maria Aghazarian, Johan Tilstra Apr 2018

The Privileged Link: Open Access, Version Of Record, Or Let The User Decide?, Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, Aaron Tay, Maria Aghazarian, Johan Tilstra

Research Collection Library

As the availability of open access (OA) copies continues to grow, platforms and libraries are increasingly facing the possibility of linking users to version of record copies as well as to OA but non-version of record copies of the same article. Some advocate prioritizing linking to OA copies while others argue that the version of record should be prioritized. In many cases, this is a question of whether to link to a copy that the library has licensed over the copies that are freely available; however, the same conundrum can occur with respect to publisher-hosted OA content vs. copies available …

Winning Combination For Collaboration On Plagiarism: Smu Libraries And Student Council Of Discipline (Scd), Mei Tan

Research Collection Library

Plagiarism in higher education is a reality that will not go away any time soon. In Singapore Management University (SMU) Libraries, we observed that there had been an increase in requests for plagiarism workshops in recent years. We also realised from the onset that conducting library workshops on plagiarism would not be sustainable in the long-run.

Whose Rebellion? Reformed Resistance Theory In America: Part Ii, Sarah Morgan Smith, Mark David Hall Apr 2018

Whose Rebellion? Reformed Resistance Theory In America: Part Ii, Sarah Morgan Smith, Mark David Hall

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

Students of the American Founding routinely assert that America's civic leaders were influenced by secular Lockean political ideas, especially on the question of resistance to tyrannical authority. In the first part of this series, we showed that virtually all Reformed writers, from Calvin to the end of the Glorious Revolution, agreed that tyrants could be actively resisted. The only debated question was who could resist them. In this essay, we contend that the Reformed approach to active resistance had an important influence on how America's Founders responded to perceived tyrannical actions by Parliament and the Crown.

Searching For Justice In Post-Apartheid South Africa: How Reparations Have The Potential To Move South Africa Towards A Better Future, Margaret J. Eisenhardt Apr 2018

Searching For Justice In Post-Apartheid South Africa: How Reparations Have The Potential To Move South Africa Towards A Better Future, Margaret J. Eisenhardt

VA Engage Journal

This personal reflection is a result of my experiences abroad in South Africa, particularly the areas of Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Bethulie. Prior to my trip overseas, I learned about the rainbow nation’s principles of unity, forgiveness, and friendship that South Africa values dearly. These notions of harmony were endearing to hear about, but they were quickly challenged as soon as I stepped foot on South African soil. Upon arriving in South Africa and having the chance to meet local people and see the relationships built between individuals there, it was hard to ignore the unrest still existing throughout the …

Family Involvement - Influence On Change Management, Value And Performance Of Small And Medium Scale Businesses - A Research Proposal, Abimbola Mary Ojo Apr 2018

Family Involvement - Influence On Change Management, Value And Performance Of Small And Medium Scale Businesses - A Research Proposal, Abimbola Mary Ojo

MBA Student Scholarship

The aim of this research proposal is to analyze the impact of family involvement over change and performance of small and medium size family businesses. Three family business theories mostly used by previous researchers namely: entrepreneurial, stakeholder and stewardship theories will be used to explore relationships between ownership, change management and the performance objectives of family firms. This study will examine the relationship between Familiness (that is, family ownership) and firm performance by considering the influence of family management, family control, and firm size using the family influence scale (the familiness-power, experience, and culture scale [F-PEC]) presented by Klein, Astrachan, …

Retiring The Mack: Preparing Campus Community For Library Construction Project, Ady Dewey Apr 2018

Retiring The Mack: Preparing Campus Community For Library Construction Project, Ady Dewey

Strategic Public Relations Projects

The Bridgewater campus was on the verge of a dramatic change as the Alexander Mack Memorial Library transformed into the John Kenny Forrer Learning Commons. The project impacted every student as the Mack closed its doors in May 2018, library services were moved to another building and warehouse, and new study spaces were created on campus. Despite this project touching every current and prospective student, there was not a distinct communication plan to reach this audience.

At the request of the library administration, the Strategic Public Relations class planned and recommended how to promote and educate the campus community about …

Coaching Behavior And The Development Of Social Physique Anxiety, Tara Fishback Apr 2018

Coaching Behavior And The Development Of Social Physique Anxiety, Tara Fishback

CUP Undergraduate Research

In this research, I examined the relationship between coaching behaviors and the development of social physique anxiety in adolescent female athletes. In the past, researchers have found links between coaching styles and the behavior and thought processes of athletes, but no research has been conducted regarding the effects of coaching behavior on the development of social physique anxiety in athletes, male or female. The results of this research have the potential to benefit the athletic community by providing them with more information regarding the mental health of athletes. This was an ex post facto correlational study. Each participant completed two …

Exploring The Associations Between Instagram Use And Depressive Symptoms: A Replication With Extension, Jasmine Bruner

CUP Undergraduate Research

Today, social media platforms continue to grow. Users of these platforms are also spending extended periods of time on them. Researchers in the literature are finding that social media use can have detrimental effects on a user’s wellbeing. This study is a replication with extension of a 2015 study by Lup, Trub, and Rosenthal. This study uses a moderated mediation model to explore the association between Instagram use and depressive symptoms through negative social comparison and moderated by amount of strangers followed and type of Instagram use. One hundred and forty two participants between the ages of 18-29 completed anonymous …

First Responder Preparedness Campaign For The Olympia Fire Department, Gabe Padukiewicz Apr 2018

First Responder Preparedness Campaign For The Olympia Fire Department, Gabe Padukiewicz

CUP Undergraduate Research

The city of Olympia, Washington rests just inland of one of the biggest tectonic plate fault lines in all of North America, this is what is known as the Cascadia Subduction Zone. Scientists believe that it is only a matter of time until there is a massive mega-quake due to the tectonic plates friction as we can read, “the plates are stuck, and the stress will build up until the fault suddenly breaks. This last happened in 1700: the result was an earthquake on the order of magnitude 9.0, followed within minutes by a large tsunami—much like the earthquake and …

Post-Facts: Information Literacy And Authority After The 2016 Election, Stefanie Bluemle Apr 2018

Post-Facts: Information Literacy And Authority After The 2016 Election, Stefanie Bluemle

Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

This article addresses the challenge that post-truth politics poses to teaching authority in information literacy. First, it isolates an element of the post-truth phenomenon, an element it calls post-facts, to elucidate why teaching source evaluation is not, by itself, an antidote to fake news or other evidence of Americans’ media illiteracy. Second, it addresses the implications of post-facts politics for the concept of authority as defined by the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, drawing on the work of Patrick Wilson and Max Weber to illustrate which elements of authority librarians must rethink due to recent events.

The Impact Of Syrian Refugees On Jordan: A Framework For Analysis, Wa’Ed Alshoubaki, Michael Harris Apr 2018

The Impact Of Syrian Refugees On Jordan: A Framework For Analysis, Wa’Ed Alshoubaki, Michael Harris

Public Administration Faculty Research

The civil war in Syria has caused a mass influx of Syrian refugees into other countries throughout the region and beyond. Jordan has received a large share of Syrian refugees, currently totaling to the alarming number of 1.2 mln people. Addressing the need of Syrian refugees has drained the resources of Jordanian government and has had its substantial impact on Jordanian society overall. In an effort to better understand the humanitarian, political, economic, sociocultural and environmental challenges to Jordan and its government, this study has developed a comprehensive analytical framework. The comprehensive analytical framework has been developed based on the …

Self-Care In Graduate And Undergraduate Social Work Students At The University Of Southern Maine, Rachel Andreasen Apr 2018

Self-Care In Graduate And Undergraduate Social Work Students At The University Of Southern Maine, Rachel Andreasen

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

Prior literature clearly demonstrates that social workers are at a high risk for burnout, compassion fatigue, secondary stress, and vicarious trauma (Kapilistas & Corcoran, 2015) (Kinman & Grant, 2011). Social work programs that have incorporated training on self-care education have found students less stressed and with less burnout. Using Self Care Deficit Theory as a theoretical basis, the purpose of this descriptive quantitative study is explore the ways in which social work students at the University of Southern Maine are incorporating self-care into their education and lives. Students participated in a survey, which measures self-care in multiple domains. Descriptive and …

Therapeutic Riding And Psychological Health In Older Adults, Alyssa Pattison, Craig Ashford Apr 2018

Therapeutic Riding And Psychological Health In Older Adults, Alyssa Pattison, Craig Ashford

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

This project explores the available quantitative and qualitative research to see if there is a link between therapeutic horseback riding and the reduction in symptoms of depression in older adults. Currently, there is a gap in evidence based research surrounding older populations with depression and therapeutic riding. However, research gathered on adolescents and adults suggest that therapeutic riding may alleviate depressive symptoms in persons over 65 years of age. Studies included in this project reveal groups of themes. The first is assessments, tools and evaluations. The second is animal assisted therapy, equine assisted therapy, therapeutic riding, and the barn environment. …

Cultivating Compassion, Amelia Baliey Apr 2018

Cultivating Compassion, Amelia Baliey

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

Fostering compassion in a divided community is essential to the well-being of its members, and creating a sense of community. Although we come from different culminations of experience, privilege, genetics, and influence and can be divided across race, gender, ethnicity, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, or class, our humanity is what connect us. After a literature review and compilation of recent scientific studies, we recognized there was much to be said and done about compassion. Ultimately, we can take a few steps in order to cultivate compassion: communicating with others, practicing empathy, finding commonalities, giving and advocating for others, to name …

Social Exchange Theory: What Is It, And How Can It Be Applied To Everyday Situations?, Miriam Deauseault Apr 2018

Social Exchange Theory: What Is It, And How Can It Be Applied To Everyday Situations?, Miriam Deauseault

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

In all forms of relationships between people, the concept of ‘give and take’ is central. You spend time with a friend because you offer each other mutual support and have fun with them. You pay to take your significant other out on a date or buy them a nice gift because their affection and presence in your life makes you feel good. When these balances get shifted so one person is consistently taking more and the other is giving more, it tends to turn friendships, romantic relationships and other types of social bonds sour quickly. This is all common knowledge. …

The Media Portrayal Of Homelessness In Portland, Maine, Molly Hardman Apr 2018

The Media Portrayal Of Homelessness In Portland, Maine, Molly Hardman

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

On January 24, 2017, 1,188 people were identified as homeless in Maine. The Maine State Housing Authority estimates that 527 of those people were unsheltered or resided in emergency homeless shelters in the City of Portland. People who suffer from mental illness and substance abuse, survivors of domestic violence, as well as unaccompanied youths and veterans represent many of the homeless individuals in the City of Portland (MSHA, 2017). There is an abundance of research on homelessness as it relates to mental health disorders and substance abuse (Sarvis, 2017); however, less attention has been paid to the portrayal of homelessness …

Living Kinky, Carrie Kahl Apr 2018

Living Kinky, Carrie Kahl

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

Current research around BDSM bondage-discipline, domination-submission (BDSM) and kink often serves to pathologize behaviors we now recognize as part of a healthy sexual expression for individuals, couples, and poly groups alike. Kink can be defined as sensual, erotic, or otherwise sexual behaviors that are considered unconventional within the context of a society, and while these behaviors have been depathologized with the release of the DSM-V, much of the existing research has been slow to reflect these changes.

Through a phenomenological approach this study offers a glimpse into the lived experience of five self-identified kinky individuals (n=5) with consideration of their …

Rule Governed Variation In Elicited Narratives In Peruvian Sign Language (Lsp), Polly B. Lawson, Kyle Warnock Apr 2018

Rule Governed Variation In Elicited Narratives In Peruvian Sign Language (Lsp), Polly B. Lawson, Kyle Warnock

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

Wordless books offer a single-source methodology for the crosslinguistic elicitation of both spoken and signed narratives (Chafe, 1974). Yet, Labov (1972), in Sociolinguistic Patterns, argued that the most natural narratives result when subjects are emotionally engaged in their own life stories. We added a twist to the traditional single-source elicitation using Mercer Mayer’s book, Frog, Where are you? (Slobin 2004, 2005), where Deaf subjects, tested in groups, saw each other’s recountings. They embellished each upon the other in a spirit of one-upmanship, rendering richer and more natural narratives with the feel of storytelling in a face-to face tradition. This poster …

The Paul Barker Ethnographic Research In Haiti, 1950s-1960s: Assessing The Usm Vodoucollection, Hannah Marcel

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

The Collection was obtained by Paul Barker, a faculty member of the Gorham State Teachers College, during the period of 1950-1960s (see Figures 1-4, 7). It is compiled of religious artifacts mostly relating to Haitian Vodou, with a few objects from Africa and the Dominican Republic. Haitian Vodouis heavily influenced by aspects of African religions that traveled to the Americas on the slave trade. It shares some characteristics with Louisiana Voodoo, Santeria, and other Afro-Caribbean religions who were also influenced by religions being introduced to the Americas by means of the slave trade. Each religion developed distinct characteristics shaped by …
