Seeking Justice And Defending The Oppressed: The Protestant Church’S Role In Racial Reconciliation, Lindsey L. Coleman Apr 2018

Seeking Justice And Defending The Oppressed: The Protestant Church’S Role In Racial Reconciliation, Lindsey L. Coleman

Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal

Systemic racial injustice affects every area of life, including religion. The history of the Protestant church is fraught with a habit to hurt more than help in this regard. The demographics, rhetoric, and culture of a church can contribute to racial superiority among white members and lead to an incorrect reading of scripture that supports racial injustice. This paper analyzes the ways in which Sojourn Midtown Community Church in Louisville, Kentucky, has used relationships, leadership, and worship to reflect attitudes of racial reconciliation.

Local Government Spending On Public Housing: Factors Of Influence In Metropolitan Areas, Vittoria R. Totaro 2241446 Apr 2018

Local Government Spending On Public Housing: Factors Of Influence In Metropolitan Areas, Vittoria R. Totaro 2241446

Public Administration ETDs

Rent or mortgage payments make up the largest portion of an American family’s budget. As there is a limited housing stock in metropolitan areas, low-income families struggle to find housing that is both adequate and affordable. Federal housing programs make funding available, but the provision of housing is left to local governments. Through the implementation of bold strategies and initiatives, local governments can help their low-income constituents find permanent housing for themselves and their families.

Public housing in the U.S. is associated with dilapidation, overcrowding, and social disorganization. In the past, housing projects have been shortsighted measures aimed at addressing …

Events, Social Connections, Place Identities And Extended Families, Bernadette Quinn, Theresa Ryan

Articles

The study reported here investigates the role that planned social gatherings play in shaping social connections, forging group identity and re-affirming connections with significant ‘home’ places within families where relationships extend across space. Empirically, it draws on a study of the Gathering, a 2013 national tourism initiative that encouraged people in Ireland to organise ‘gatherings’ to attract ‘home’ family members scattered across the globe. It reports data generated using mixed methods administered in two Irish counties. The findings demonstrate the profound meanings that the gatherings had for participating family members. The events served to strengthen existing family ties and to …

Fear Of Etiolation In The Age Of Professional Passion, Kathleen F. Mcconnell Apr 2018

Fear Of Etiolation In The Age Of Professional Passion, Kathleen F. Mcconnell

Faculty Publications

Recent analysis of academia credits neoliberalism for its destabilization. Neoliberalism alone does not explain academics’ conflicted attachments to a precarious professional life or the tendency to embrace normative conceptions of passion and shun professional decline. The quarantine on decline is analogous to the exemption that J.L. Austin imposed on theatre: both deny constitutive power to certain statements and harbor a fear of queerness. Four essays published in Text & Performance Quarterly illustrate how academics quarantine professional fears and doubts. A fifth finds that the deterioration of professional accomplishments loosens normative associations to make space for other, queer relations.

Expanding The Classroom: Investigating Local Government Practitioners’ Use Of Academic Resources, Willow S. Jacobson, Kristina T. Lambright Apr 2018

Expanding The Classroom: Investigating Local Government Practitioners’ Use Of Academic Resources, Willow S. Jacobson, Kristina T. Lambright

Public Administration Faculty Scholarship

Drawing on Boyer’s scholarship of teaching, we propose that public affairs education could be conceptualized as not just including the education of current students but also the education of public affairs practitioners throughout their careers. To explore knowledge diffusion from academics to public affairs practitioners, we conducted 40 phone interviews with county human resources (HR) directors in New York and North Carolina and examined the extent to which this population directly used academic resources. There was moderate use of academic resources from higher education institutions across the sample, with many North Carolina HR directors consulting publications and personnel from one …

Culture In Context: A Pilot Study On Culturally-Oriented Metacognitive Feedback (Comf), Daniela Maltais

Honors Capstones

Many institutions aim to bring new social dynamics to their education system, as well as to increase diversity within and between institutions. One way higher-education institutions reach this goal is with outreach programs geared towards international students. These students’ cultures have provided a framework that built their schemas, and this in turn molded their style of writing. Lacking years of foundation building through the American school system, international students may struggle to fulfill the requirements for successful writing in American universities. However, professors have at their disposal a tool to aide students – feedback that incorporates metacognition. This study investigated …

The Discoverability Of Award-Winning Undergraduate Research In History: Implications For Academic Libraries, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey Apr 2018

The Discoverability Of Award-Winning Undergraduate Research In History: Implications For Academic Libraries, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey

Libraries

Making scholarly information visible to web search engines is an ongoing challenge, and undergraduate research is no exception. Using a sample of award-winning undergraduate history papers and journals, the authors searched Google, Google Scholar, Microsoft Academic, and the authors’ institutional repository to gauge the difficulty of locating these works. Given that many of these works were not easily found, results suggest that libraries and their institutions could be doing more to increase the discoverability of undergraduate research. Based on the success stories observed in this study, we offer strategies to libraries and librarians for increasing the visibility of undergraduate student …
