Exploring Workforce Confidence And Patient Experiences: A Quantitative Analysis, Katie M. Owens, Stephanie Keller Apr 2018

Exploring Workforce Confidence And Patient Experiences: A Quantitative Analysis, Katie M. Owens, Stephanie Keller

Patient Experience Journal

Confidence is recognized as one of the most influential factors to affect performance. Individual, leader, and team confidence play essential roles in achieving success and the absence of confidence has been connected with failure. While confidence is not a substitute for competency, it creates trusting relationships, empowerment, and resiliency to persevere when challenges arise. Objective: In this study, we examined workforce confidence in the patient experience and patient perceptions of their experience of care. Methods: We compared responses to the Patient-Centered Excellence Survey (PCES) from 41 United States hospitals, measuring workforce confidence in the patient experience provided, to patient’s ratings …

Nursing Transfer Of Accountability At The Bedside: Partnering With Patients To Pilot A New Initiative In Ontario Community Hospitals, Kristina Ba Miller, Aden Hamza, Kateryna Metersky, Dianne M. Gaffney

Patient Experience Journal

The transfer of accountability (TOA) for a patient from one nurse to another at change of shift is an important opportunity to exchange essential patient care information, as well as to enhance the safety and quality of patient care. This study was undertaken to explore nurses’, patients’ and family members’ perceptions associated with the implementation of bedside nurse to nurse TOA. Focus groups were conducted pre-implementation (two with nurses and two with patients and family members) and post-implementation (six with nurses and two with patients and family members). The focus groups were audio-recorded, transcribed and analysed using directed content analysis. …

Family-Centered Caregiving From Hospital To Home: Coping With Trauma And Building Capacity With The Hope For Families Model, Anna Newcomb, L Gordon Moore, Holly C. Matto Apr 2018

Family-Centered Caregiving From Hospital To Home: Coping With Trauma And Building Capacity With The Hope For Families Model, Anna Newcomb, L Gordon Moore, Holly C. Matto

Patient Experience Journal

Informal caregivers and families play a significant role in the recovery process of trauma survivors. However, the needs and outcomes of orthopedic caregiving family members in the months following traumatic injury have received almost no attention in the literature. Our study sought to understand the factors impacting orthopedic trauma families’ experience and their ability to cope and provide care post-acute hospitalization. Based on these findings, we designed a hospital-based program to enhance family coping and adjustment post-discharge. Caregivers (N=12) of patients with orthopedic trauma injury engaged in three in-depth semi-structured face-to-face interviews to identify their most salient concerns. Once home, …

How Patients View Their Contribution As Partners In The Enhancement Of Patient Safety In Clinical Care, Marie-Pascale Pomey, Nathalie Clavel, Ursulla Aho-Glele, Noemie Ferré, Paloma Fernandez-Mcauley Apr 2018

How Patients View Their Contribution As Partners In The Enhancement Of Patient Safety In Clinical Care, Marie-Pascale Pomey, Nathalie Clavel, Ursulla Aho-Glele, Noemie Ferré, Paloma Fernandez-Mcauley

Patient Experience Journal

Despite the call from the World Health Organization for more active involvement from patients in the prevention of health care-related risks, there is still insufficient evidence about how patients can be more proactive in the safety of their own care. This study helps understand the perspective of patients as partners regarding their roles, as well as their relatively untapped potential in detecting and limiting adverse events (AEs) for patient safety. 17 patients-as-partners were interviewed on five themes: 1) Behavior of patients/relatives for avoiding AEs; 2) Competencies sought in patients/relatives to play an active role in patient safety; 3) Factors limiting …

Barriers And Facilitators To Family Participation In The Care Of Their Hospitalized Loved Ones, Lynda Bélanger, Marie Desmartis, Martin Coulombe Apr 2018

Barriers And Facilitators To Family Participation In The Care Of Their Hospitalized Loved Ones, Lynda Bélanger, Marie Desmartis, Martin Coulombe

Patient Experience Journal

This study’s objective was to better understand family members’ experiences in order to identify how healthcare organizations can facilitate their participation in the care of a hospitalized loved one. Eighteen individuals at the bedside of a hospitalized loved one were interviewed individually. Roles at the bedside and factors that facilitated their participation or represented barriers were examined. A qualitative analysis using a mixed inductive/deductive approach was performed. Reassurance and emotional support, as well as sharing information with the healthcare team emerged as main roles. Quality and timeliness of the information received about the patient’s condition, prognosis and changes in medical …

A Framework For Conceptualizing How Narratives From Health-Care Consumers Might Improve Or Impede The Use Of Information About Provider Quality, Melissa L. Finucane, Steven C. Martino, Andrew M. Parker, Mark Schlesinger, Rachel Grob, Jennifer L. Cerully, Lise Rybowski, Dale Shaller Apr 2018

Cerully, Lise Rybowski, Dale Shaller

Patient Experience Journal

Consumers choosing a health-care provider have access to diverse information including narratives by patients about their prior experiences. However, little research has examined how narratives might improve or impede the use of information about the quality of providers’ performance. This paper describes a conceptual framework for examining mechanisms by which narrative information might influence consumer judgments and decisions about providers. We conducted a conceptual review of risk communication and behavioral decision research. We synthesized the literature to form the foundation of a conceptual framework for assessing how narrative information about provider quality impacts consumer decisions about providers. We identified four …

Patients’ Stories Of Encounters With Doctors: Expectations And Anxieties, Daniella Arieli, Batya Tamir Apr 2018

Patients’ Stories Of Encounters With Doctors: Expectations And Anxieties, Daniella Arieli, Batya Tamir

Patient Experience Journal

The study contributes to the understanding of how patients experience encounters with doctors. The study is based on the gathering and analysis of subjective stories of 'healthy' patients who live in Israel about their encounters with doctors. On the one hand, medical encounters were described as functional ritualistic events, and the doctor was described as an indifferent clerk. On the other hand, and often at the same time, medical encounters were perceived as incredibly meaningful and potentially fateful events, and the doctor as a supreme authority. Four main inter-connected expressions of this were: 1. The encounter as a ritual: A …

Original Parts: Aging And Reckoning With Cystic Fibrosis Related Kidney Disease, Alexandra Ch Nowakowski Apr 2018

Original Parts: Aging And Reckoning With Cystic Fibrosis Related Kidney Disease, Alexandra Ch Nowakowski

Patient Experience Journal

Kidney disease increasingly impacts people with cystic fibrosis (CF) as adult patients continue to survive longer. Yet the literature on CF related kidney disease focuses little on amplifying the voices of people aging with the condition. This article presents perspectives on CF related kidney disease from a medical sociologist who is themselves managing these issues. It (1) gives an overview of relevant literature and trends in epidemiological data on kidney disease and CF, (2) details the author’s own process of adjusting to progressive changes in renal function, and (3) outlines opportunities for clinicians to make a positive impact for patients …

The Sherpa Meets Maslow: Medicine And The Hierarchy Of Needs, Rana Lee Adawi Awdish Md Fccp Apr 2018

The Sherpa Meets Maslow: Medicine And The Hierarchy Of Needs, Rana Lee Adawi Awdish Md Fccp

Patient Experience Journal

A critical care physician returning to medicine after her own critical illness experiences a crisis of orientation. She finds she can no longer serve as the Voice of Medicine. She replaces the former construct with a more humble model, in which the physician serves as an intermediary. She equates this new role to that of the Sherpas of Nepal. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs forms the mountain, as she reimagines her role in her patients’ lives.

The Consumer Has Spoken: Patient Experience Is Now Healthcare’S Core Differentiator, Jason A. Wolf Phd Apr 2018

The Consumer Has Spoken: Patient Experience Is Now Healthcare’S Core Differentiator, Jason A. Wolf Phd

Patient Experience Journal

In just a few days we will celebrate Patient Experience Journal’s (PXJ) 4th anniversary since our inaugural publication. In these 4 short and quick years we have seen 163 articles published in our first four volumes that have stirred a significant focus on building the evidence base in patient experience. Not only has PXJ served as the central clearing house for thoughtful research, measurable cases, and insightful narratives, but it also has reinforced the breadth and depth of what patient experience truly encompasses. This integrated view was reinforced by the very voices of healthcare’s consumers in The Beryl Institute’s …

Personal And Leadership Development In The Middle School Environment: The School Strong Initiative, Ashley Kunkle

M.A. in Leadership Studies: Capstone Project Papers

Schools today are extremely focused on the academic rigor demands of standards and literacy that students aren’t learning the skills necessary to become self-initiating individuals and leaders. Through the School STRONG Initiative, students and teachers will have an outlet for community, technical skills enhancement, and leadership and coaching development. With this program in place, schools will transition from the traditional schooling approach, to an authentically led learning organization.

Testing Option B+: Measuring The Impact Of Perceived Clinic Access On Human Capital Investment In Malawi, Annalivia J. Robinson Apr 2018

Testing Option B+: Measuring The Impact Of Perceived Clinic Access On Human Capital Investment In Malawi, Annalivia J. Robinson

Economics Honors Projects

From 1985 to the current day, the HIV/AIDS epidemic has been responsible for increasing mortality and morbidity rates amongst Malawi citizens. In addition to causing negative health and economic shocks to adults living with HIV/AIDS, this virus reduces capital available for families' educational investments. Providing subsidized antiretroviral treatment (ART) has potential consequences for human capital investment and economic growth. Using data from 2010 and 2015/16 Demographic Health Surveys for Malawi, I estimate the effect of increased ART services and perceived access changes on educational outcomes of children living in HIV+ homes. I find that children belonging to households with an …

Nunca Más: Rhetoric Of Human Rights And Democracy In Post-Authoritarian Argentina, Sarah R. Coleman Apr 2018

Nunca Más: Rhetoric Of Human Rights And Democracy In Post-Authoritarian Argentina, Sarah R. Coleman

Political Science Honors Projects

In 1983, Argentina began its process of transitioning to democracy and away from a repressive military dictatorship that had ruled the nation for the past 7 years. With this democratic transition came the process of transition justice aimed at confronting and rectifying the human rights violations committed under the authoritarian regime. Out of this transitional period arose many questions: How do principles of democracy and human rights overlap? How does one define concepts such as justice, truth, and rights? What responsibility does democracy have to upholding human rights? And most importantly, how does a transitional regime institute long-lasting norms regarding …

How Research Becomes Impact: Librarians Helping Faculty Use Scholarly Metrics To Select Journals, Marc Vinyard, Jaimie Beth Colvin Apr 2018

How Research Becomes Impact: Librarians Helping Faculty Use Scholarly Metrics To Select Journals, Marc Vinyard, Jaimie Beth Colvin

Pepperdine University Libraries

Many librarians support faculty with the publishing process, which includes journal selection and evaluating the impact of their scholarly output. While large universities have the resources for entire departments devoted to bibliometrics, the authors of this article give strategies for faculty publishing support at a smaller liberal arts university. The authors created a LibGuide with publishing resources and presented the initiative to several academic divisions. Faculty were surveyed, and the results indicated that the majority of respondents were interested in assessing journal quality and viewed the library as a resource for help with the publishing process.

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: April 25, 2018, Eric Thompson Apr 2018

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: April 25, 2018, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) 1 rose by 0.88% during March of 2018. The increase in the LEI-N, which is designed to predict economic activity six months into the future, suggests that the Nebraska economy will grow steadily through the summer of 2018. Strong business expectations, rising manufacturing hours and rising air passenger enplanements were the reasons for the LEI-N increase. Respondents to the March Survey of Nebraska Business reported plans to increase both sales and employment at their businesses over the next six months. Initial claims for unemployment insurance changed little during March but there was a …

El Andaluz Y El Español Estadounidense: Exploring Traces Of Andalusian Sibilants In U.S. Spanish, Carolyn M. Siegman Apr 2018

El Andaluz Y El Español Estadounidense: Exploring Traces Of Andalusian Sibilants In U.S. Spanish, Carolyn M. Siegman

Hispanic Studies Honors Projects

The Andalucista Theory claims that Andalusian Spanish was particularly influential during the development of Spanish in Latin America during the time of Spanish colonization. The present study seeks to examine traces of Andalusian Spanish in Spanish in the United States, considering the added level of complexity brought by contact with English and heightened contact with other dialects of Spanish. By examining 10 interviews from Andalusian Spanish speakers and 12 interviews from Spanish speakers in the U.S., we provide a comparison of the modern-day phonetic realizations of , , and in these two distant linguistic regions.

Narrating A Relationship: Holocaust Education In The United States And Early U.S. Foreign Aid To Israel, Abigail Massell Apr 2018

Narrating A Relationship: Holocaust Education In The United States And Early U.S. Foreign Aid To Israel, Abigail Massell

International Studies Honors Projects

This thesis considers the origins of Holocaust consciousness in the United States and U.S. aid to Israel. Both phenomena's trajectories are rooted in the publication of English translations of The Diary of Anne Frank and Night, Adolf Eichmann's 1961 trial in Jerusalem, and the growth of U.S. strategic interests in Israel after the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. This thesis conceptualizes the correlations between growing Holocaust consciousness in the U.S. as reflected in high school history curriculum and evolving U.S. policy towards Israel in the form of foreign aid. Specifically, I analyze the treatment of the Holocaust in world history textbooks published …

The Elephant (Head) In The Room: A Critical Look At Trophy Hunting, Chelsea Batavia, Michael Paul Nelson, Chris T. Darimont, Paul C. Paquet, William J. Ripple, Arian D. Wallach

Big-Game and Trophy Hunting Collection

Trophy hunting has occupied a prominent position in recent scholarly literature and popular media. In the scientific conservation literature, researchers are generally supportive of or sympathetic to its usage as a source of monetary support for conservation. Although authors at times acknowledge that trophy hunting faces strong opposition from many members of the public, often for unspecified reasons associated with ethics, neither the nature nor the implications of these ethical concerns have been substantively addressed. We identify the central act of wildlife “trophy” taking as a potential source of ethical discomfort and public opposition. We highlight that trophy hunting entails …
