Shakeout In The Early Commercial Airframe Industry, Taylor Jaworski, Andrew Smyth May 2018

Shakeout In The Early Commercial Airframe Industry, Taylor Jaworski, Andrew Smyth

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

The commercial airframe industry in the US experienced a shakeout from the early 1930s into the post‐Second World War period. Unlike shakeouts in automobiles, tyres, or televisions, the commercial airframe industry's early life cycle was affected by external factors, particularly government demand. Using newly digitized data on all planes introduced in the commercial market between 1926 and 1965, we find that commercial airframe manufacturers with bomber contracts during the Second World War were more likely to have postwar market share than firms without such contracts, controlling for plane characteristics and other forms of government contracting. We attribute the effect of …

Navigating The Singapore’S Private International Rules In The Age Of Innovative Cross-Border Commercial Litigation Framework, Man Yip May 2018

Navigating The Singapore’S Private International Rules In The Age Of Innovative Cross-Border Commercial Litigation Framework, Man Yip

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In the last decade, Singapore has been consistently working on consolidating its position as a leading dispute resolution hub in Asia. China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative affords, in principle, an invaluable opportunity for Singapore to foster its role in dispute resolution services. Conversely, the success of the OBOR is in part dependent upon the availability of reliable and efficient dispute resolution mechanisms to handle commercial disputes that will invariably arise. Singapore looks poised to contribute to the success of the OBOR in that respect, in light of its mature and business-friendly legal system.

Coincidentally, China announced its OBOR …

Advice Giving: A Subtle Pathway To Power, Michael Schaerer, Leigh Tost, Li Huang, Francesca Gino, Rick Larrick May 2018

Advice Giving: A Subtle Pathway To Power, Michael Schaerer, Leigh Tost, Li Huang, Francesca Gino, Rick Larrick

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We propose that interpersonal behaviors can activate feelings of power, and we examine this idea in the context of advice giving. Specifically, we show a) that advice giving is an interpersonal behavior that enhances individuals’ sense of power and b) that those who seek power are motivated to engage in advice giving. Four studies, including two experiments (n=290, n=188), an organization-based field study (n=94), and a negotiation simulation (n=124) demonstrate that giving advice enhances the advisor’s sense of power because it gives the advisor perceived influence over others’ actions. Two of our studies further demonstrate that people with a high …

Physical Therapy Review Of Best Practices Based On Psychology, Bethany Painter May 2018

Physical Therapy Review Of Best Practices Based On Psychology, Bethany Painter

Honors Projects

Physical therapy is a field that is growing and changing constantly. For so long, it was assumed that physical healing should be the sole focus of physical therapy. While this is an important aspect of the rehabilitation process, there is so much more to it than that. The psychological trauma a person may experience following an injury can be just as challenging, if not more challenging to overcome than the physical repercussions of the injury. For this reason, it is important to take psychological healing into consideration, as well as physical healing when creating best practices for physical therapists. The …

The emergence of the water–energy–food (WEF) nexus has resulted in changes to the way we perceive our natural resources. Stressors such as climate change and population growth have highlighted the fragility of our WEF systems, necessitating integrated solutions across multiple scales. While a number of frameworks and analytical tools have been developed since 2011, a comprehensive WEF nexus tool remains elusive, hindered in part by our limited data and understanding of the interdependencies and connections across the WEF systems. To achieve this, the community of academics, practitioners and policy-makers invested in WEF nexus research are addressing several critical areas that …

The Effect Of Dose Frequency On Treatment Efficacy For Children With Speech Sound Disorders, Kristen Marie Giesbrecht May 2018

The Effect Of Dose Frequency On Treatment Efficacy For Children With Speech Sound Disorders, Kristen Marie Giesbrecht

Theses and Dissertations

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are urged to make evidence-based treatment decisions, but it is challenging to determine the appropriate intervention intensity for children with speech sound disorders (SSD) due to limited published information. This study is a single subject, multiple baseline design that compares the phonological changes of four preschool children (4;0 to 4;9) who received therapy either twice a week or four times a week for a total of twenty, 50-minute sessions. Each child’s production accuracy of treated sounds and overall percent consonants correct (PCC) values were used to qualitatively and quantitatively measure generalization via raw scores, d scores, and …

Color Between The Lines: Navigating Mixed Race Identity, Kelly O'Halloran May 2018

Color Between The Lines: Navigating Mixed Race Identity, Kelly O'Halloran

College Honors Program

Through the qualitative work of narrative psychology, this thesis explores experiences of mixed race individuals who have one white parent, one minority parent, and who grew up in a predominantly white community. The data were drawn from the author’s own first-hand experiences as well as in-depth interviews from three Holy Cross students about their mixed race identities. On the basis of these data, three forms of self-identity were found to be especially salient: the unaware self, the unique self, and the liminal self. The unaware self can be understood as not knowing how one appears to others. The unique self …

Measuring Early Emergence Of Self-Awareness In Infants Using Eye Tracking, Melanie Lawrie May 2018

Measuring Early Emergence Of Self-Awareness In Infants Using Eye Tracking, Melanie Lawrie

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Recent attention has been paid to the neurological, evolutionary, and developmental correlates of human self-face recognition. In the present study, we examined 12-, 18-, and 24-month-olds using eye tracking to determine if there was a unique visual scan path of faces for self-recognizers as compared to non-recognizers. Results indicated that overall, 12- and 24-month-olds have different scan-paths compared to 18-month-olds. Eighteen-month-olds have an increased number of fixations and fixation time spent on the eyes, mouth and top half of the face, while 12- and 24 month-olds have more fixations on the nose and bottom half of the face. Furthermore, self-recognizers …

Garden Path Sentence Processing As A Measure Of Belief Updating, Alexis Diana Grant May 2018

Garden Path Sentence Processing As A Measure Of Belief Updating, Alexis Diana Grant

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Handedness is a marker for individual differences in brain organization. Garden path sentences (GPS), those that require a mid-sentence change in understanding to capture sentence meaning require the updating of beliefs via the right hemisphere. Inconsistent-handers (ICH) have increased access to right hemisphere processes, which has previously been shown to result in increased belief updating. It was hypothesized that ICH would be more accurate and more rapid in their processing of GPS relative to consistent right handers (CRH) due to increased access to the neural structures involved. Additionally, men and women differ in their brain organization, and in their cortical …

Leadership Developmental Readiness : Furthering Our Understanding Of This Multi-Dimensional Construct, Quinn E. Knudsen May 2018

Leadership Developmental Readiness : Furthering Our Understanding Of This Multi-Dimensional Construct, Quinn E. Knudsen

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Although Leader Developmental Readiness (LDR) has been discussed in the leadership literature for over a decade, there has been little consensus on what factors constitute whether one is ready to develop as a leader. The purpose of our research was to consolidate and provide a cohesive model of the motivational components of LDR that encompasses the existing body of research. We used a longitudinal database containing 328 first semester freshmen students from five universities involved in leadership development programs to assess how the proposed LDR factors cluster and the antecedents of these factors. Our model suggests LDR as constituting a …

Meaningfulness Of Work And Family In Working Parents As A Predictor Of Work Family Balance, Enrichment, And Conflict, Sydney Reeves

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

There are arguably great benefits when employees experience a sense of purpose or meaningfulness in their work. The current study examined whether felt meaningfulness of work and family predicts one’s tendency to manage work/life outcomes. Via survey methodology, 386 participants reported the sense of meaningfulness they derived from their work and from their family responsibilities. Analyses explored how individuals’ relative ratings of work and family meaningfulness, as well as the similarity of these perceptions with those of their spouses/partners, affect Work Family Conflict, Balance, and Enrichment. Results showed that meaningfulness of work and family significantly affected work family outcomes. Furthermore, …

Negotiating An Identity : Portraits Of The Sexual Identity Self-Labeling Process For Non-Heterosexual Women In Early Adulthood, Stacy A. Pinto May 2018

Negotiating An Identity : Portraits Of The Sexual Identity Self-Labeling Process For Non-Heterosexual Women In Early Adulthood, Stacy A. Pinto

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The concept of sexual identity has been evolving for decades. While there has been research and theory on the development of sexual identity, researchers have paid little attention to what, specifically, influences individuals to adopt one label for their sexual identity over another. This study employed qualitative methods of research, based in portraiture, to gather and analyze data on three non-heterosexual, self-identified women in early adulthood, from a metropolitan area in the northeastern United States. Each participant’s experience, as it relates to the labeling process for their sexual identity, is presented in its own portrait, and subsequently analyzed to highlight …

How Big Is Too Big? : The Potentially Coercive Effects Of Plea Discount On Innocent Defendants, Ryan Schneider May 2018

How Big Is Too Big? : The Potentially Coercive Effects Of Plea Discount On Innocent Defendants, Ryan Schneider

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In the United States, approximately 95% of all criminal cases end in guilty pleas. Many scholars are concerned with plea bargaining’s potential to be coercive, and cite data on wrongful convictions as proof that an innocence problem exists. Estimates of false guilty pleas may range between 18 and 27 percent, though a true base rate is difficult to establish. Using vignettes, I examined the effects of guilt, trial penalty and plea discount size on plea decisions of adult participants recruited online through TurkPrime. Guilt was the strongest predictor of plea acceptance, but guilty plea rates increased for all participants with …

Young Seasonal Employees : How Work Conditions And Burnout Contribute To Turnover Intentions, Marlee Wanamaker May 2018

Young Seasonal Employees : How Work Conditions And Burnout Contribute To Turnover Intentions, Marlee Wanamaker

To date there has been little research conducted on young seasonal workers, leaving a dearth in the literature regarding such things as how they react to their work environment and the outcomes of those reactions. This study focuses on burnout in young seasonal workers in the amusement park industry, using the job demands-resource model to make predictions. Surveys from 155 young seasonal workers at six amusement parks on the eastern coast of the US responded to surveys at two points in time measuring job demands, job resources, burnout, and intention to turnover. Hypotheses were tested using moderated regression to investigate …

The Culture Of Nondisclosure Of Sexual Abuse, Veronica R. Barrios May 2018

The Culture Of Nondisclosure Of Sexual Abuse, Veronica R. Barrios

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The existing understanding of the culture of nondisclosure of sexual abuse is almost entirely absent. It lacks a theoretical framework, an empirical exploration into how it occurs in family relationships, and little is known about disclosure barriers in practice. This dissertation will address these three areas through three separate but related papers. First, the researcher will present a new cohesive theoretical framework that integrates and expands on existing theories for nondisclosure and that incorporates how individual decision-making is nested within social and familial contexts. Second, the researcher will report on an exploratory research study about sibling relationships regarding sexual abuse …

Self-Perception Of Ncaa Division I Student-Athletes, Sean Strehlow May 2018

Self-Perception Of Ncaa Division I Student-Athletes, Sean Strehlow

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Self-perception is the level of competency at which individuals evaluate themselves in certain areas or domains (Marsh & Shavelson, 1985). An individual’s self-perceptions contribute to their global self-worth, and even predict performance (Cuellar, 2014; Harter & Neemann, 2012). Self-perception is an increasingly popular area of study, and there is a gap in the research as it pertains to college student-athletes (Harter & Neemann, 2012). This study measures self- perception scores, as well as experiences with racial discrimination, of 306 NCAA Division I student-athletes using the Self-Perception Profile for College Students (Harter & Neemann, 2012). Scores are compared across race/ethnicity and …

Factors Affecting The Longevity Of Individual Terrorists, Madeline Brice May 2018

Factors Affecting The Longevity Of Individual Terrorists, Madeline Brice

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine factors that affect the longevity of individual terrorists. Previous studies on terrorist group longevity have focused on the decisions terrorist groups have made rather than focusing on factors that help individuals evade capture. Literature also suggests that terrorists that manage to stay active may be able to use this as a valuable recruiting tool. This project examines six different relationships with longevity, including Attorney General (AG) Guidelines, demographics, ideology, level of participation, number of activities, and sophistication of attack. To examine these relationships, data will be used from the American Terrorism Study …

An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Spirituality And Coping Responses Among Women With A Visual Impairment, Sandra Marie Bullins

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine coping responses, specifically by women, and the relationship between those coping responses and a woman’s self-reported spirituality. The sample was comprised of women (n = 175) from the United States and 10 foreign countries. The results of a correlational analysis showed a strong positive relationship (r= 0.46, p<0.0001) between scores on the Spirituality Assessment Scale (SAS) and the Brief Cope (BC). There were also statistically significant correlations among subscales of the SAS and BC subscales. A multivariate analysis of variance was performed to evaluate the impact that select demographic variables might have on spirituality and coping responses. The results of the MANOVA showed no effect and were not statistically significant at alpha 0.1.
