The Role Of Patient-Provider Communication In Parent Perceptions About Adhd And Treatment, Yelim Chung May 2018

The Role Of Patient-Provider Communication In Parent Perceptions About Adhd And Treatment, Yelim Chung

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

There is a lack of studies examining the role of provider (e.g. primary care physician) communication in parent perceptions of and treatment decision-making for common childhoodonset mental health disorders, especially attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This mixed-methods study focused on the role of parent: pediatrician communication about ADHD before a child’s evaluation at a specialty ADHD clinic. Specifically, this study aimed to 1) develop a deeper understanding of parents’ initial experiences with their child’s inattentive, hyperactive and impulsive symptoms and attitudes about their child’s possible ADHD diagnosis, 2) evaluate how parents' relationships with pediatricians are related to their understanding …

How Ptsd And Alcohol Misuse In Veterans Differ According To Family Structure And Support, Alexandra Berge May 2018

How Ptsd And Alcohol Misuse In Veterans Differ According To Family Structure And Support, Alexandra Berge

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

PTSD, depression and alcohol misuse are all very prominent issues for active duty personnel and veterans. In this experiment, I examined how a family’s support can help either make these symptoms and behaviors worse or better depending if they display average or poor support. My hypothesis was that if a veteran has a strong support system, their PTSD, alcohol misuse/ AUD and depression symptoms will be lower when first assessed and decrease as time goes on compared to veterans who have poor support. I looked at three types of family support: support from family outside the home, inside the home …

Understanding The Alt-Right Brand Through A Comparative Look At Internal Vs. External Rhetoric, Samuel Norton May 2018

Understanding The Alt-Right Brand Through A Comparative Look At Internal Vs. External Rhetoric, Samuel Norton

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This project examines the communications of the alt-Right, a relatively new white supremacist social movement in the US. The popularity of the alt-Right can be attributed to not only changing social conditions leading to rising instability but also rhetorically astute uses of new media. The alt-Right has been able to define its brand as an anti-political correctness coalition, and to communicate that brand identity to the public. When the brand identity eventually fell apart, so too did the movement.ut.

A Comprehensive Study That Identifies The Gap In Project Management Education Concerning Fundamental Interpersonal And Cultural Skills, Stephanie Lechman May 2018

A Comprehensive Study That Identifies The Gap In Project Management Education Concerning Fundamental Interpersonal And Cultural Skills, Stephanie Lechman

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The project management field has an absence of a universally accepted set of attributes that relate to project success. The current methodology alone does not focus enough attention on developing skills to engage, adapt, and communicate effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders, including the project team and those affected or impacted by the project. The gap in cultural and interpersonal skills I have identified in the classroom and in textbooks motivated me to complete a research project that investigates the claims that I have outlined. The purpose of this research was to create a conceptual triangle that incorporates the …

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Better is an online publication that explores young adult women’s mental health and wellness. The publication showcases women’s journeys with mental wellness and provides helpful information and resources for maintaining and improving readers’ mental health. The purpose of the magazine is, in part, to educate people and show that mental health includes more than illness, even though treatment is a large component of mental health. Through personal accounts of mental health and service pieces to help readers, Better is a resource for improving mental …

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This analytical study of mobile dating applications offers insight into how the gamification of dating shapes the perception and influences the pursuit of intimacy by users. This study explores the rhetorical theory of gamification, utilizing it as a lens through which to look at the construction of user experience (UX) by app developers as well as the navigation of user interface (UI) by ‘players.’ Delving deeper into the three sites of study- Tinder, Bumble, and OkCupid- through gamification provides a clearing understanding of the ways in which turning dating into a game changes how individuals approach intimacy. The project proves …

Pornography As A Public Health Issue: Promoting Violence And Exploitation Of Children, Youth, And Adults, Elisabeth Taylor May 2018

Pornography As A Public Health Issue: Promoting Violence And Exploitation Of Children, Youth, And Adults, Elisabeth Taylor

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The pornography industry is expanding exponentially as a result of ongoing technological advances. The ability to stream videos over the internet and the ubiquity of the smart phone have meant that pornography producers are able to use algorithms to target potential consumers, to cultivate new sexual tastes and to deliver content to a more diverse audience over mobile devices. The advent of virtual reality pornography with interactive sex toys and sex robots imbued with artificial intelligence promises to unleash a further step-change in the extent to which pornography influences ‘real-world’ sexual culture. The critical analysis of pornography undertaken over decades …

The "Balkan Question" : Benefits And Challenges Of European Integration Through Enlargement., Kasey P. Golding

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Since the formation of the European Project, the questions of which direction the EU should take and what objectives it should pursue in the face of considerable ongoing challenges have evolved over time. Today the Western Balkan states – the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania and Bosnia-Hercegovina – pose a set of considerable challenges to the organization, and how the EU addresses the membership of these countries will stand as a critical test of the organization’s competence. As the Union turns its attention to membership consideration for these states, both their complexities and their fragilities …

Illusory Correlation And Perceived Criminality., Rachel A. Carter May 2018

Illusory Correlation And Perceived Criminality., Rachel A. Carter

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Illusory correlation is the false perception that a relationship exists between two variables. Previous studies have shown that people sometimes perceive a relationship between minority-group members and negative characteristics, when in fact, there is no informational basis for this perception. The current study investigates whether people readily perceive a relationship between criminality and minority groups, as is sometimes seen in society. Participants learned about the behaviors of members of two groups, arbitrarily labeled S and T. The ratio of positive:negative behaviors was the same for both groups (2:1). However, participants were shown fewer statements about Group T, making it a …

Five Sides Of Justice: The Dangerous And Disproportionate Influence Of The Permanent Five Members Of The Un Security Council On The International Criminal Court, Nathan Hogan

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The Security Council’s power to refer states to the International Criminal Court undermines international law because the permanent five members use their veto power to protect guilty allies from prosecution. The Council should be reformed so that the body can override a veto with a supermajority and bring war criminals to justice.

Impact Of Online Shopping On Shopping Malls, Xaioxing Yan May 2018

Impact Of Online Shopping On Shopping Malls, Xaioxing Yan

Applied Economics Theses

The growth of e-retail has been a major discussion in the shopping characteristics of contemporary society. This has been a major concern as people strive to relate the exponential growth of online shopping to the recent decline in the growth of shopping malls. Various studies have significantly investigated the growth of online shopping and have always mentioned the impact of online shopping on shopping malls to be a negative one. This study focuses on testing that hypothesis. By exploring the possible relationship between certain factors such as the number of shopping malls and the percentage increase in online shopping retail, …

Does Debt Matter?, Luhan Li May 2018

Does Debt Matter?, Luhan Li

Applied Economics Theses

National debt is a popular topic, since people have a lot of different views on national debt. For example, many people think that there is a positive relationship between national debt and GDP per capita. In other words, the national debt has also increased with the growth of GDP per capita. However, some people feel that there is an inverse relationship between them, so much so that the topic has been discussed. Based on my interest in this topic, I decided to discuss this question. This paper will discuss their influence and importance by analyzing national debt, GDP per capita, …

Further, cryptocurrencies can act as a means of payment, a medium of exchange, a store of value, and a unit of account. This thesis will analyze the technical features underlying cryptocurrencies and find out whether or not they can function as an alternative to fiat money. Since Bitcoin is the most commonly understood application …

A Forensic Investigation Into The Possible Origins Of Three Human Skeletons, Jefferson P. Sinnott

Forensic Science Theses

The Anthropology Department at Buffalo State has three human skeletons that have been part of the department’s collection for several years. The origin of the skeletons is currently unknown. Modern DNA techniques coupled with forensic anthropological techniques may now allow us to determine with some certainty the geographic origin of the skeletons. Ancestry, sex, age, and stature were assessed using current anthropological techniques. Afterwards, one tooth from each of the three skeletons was extracted, pulverized and DNA was isolated. Y-STR fragment size analysis of the DNA samples can provide information about the patrilineage of male individuals. Mitochondrial DNA sequencing analysis …

Pavlovian Conditioning: History And Application Of The Revaluation Procedure, Bana Odeh May 2018

Pavlovian Conditioning: History And Application Of The Revaluation Procedure, Bana Odeh

Honors College Theses

While Pavlovian conditioning is a widely recognized form of learning, the nature of this learned association continues to be debated and has significant implications for human and animal behavior. This paper will first address the basic structure of Pavlovian conditioning as well as the two major historical hypotheses—Stimulus-Stimulus (S-S) learning and Stimulus-Response (SR) learning—regarding the underlying neural representation of first-order conditioning. Next, the revaluation procedure, an experimental method used to distinguish between these two hypotheses, will be discussed. Furthermore, the history of revaluation studies on rats will be analyzed, with an emphasis on the specificity of the learned association formed, …

Regional One Child Policies And Economic Development In China From 1997 To 2010, Austin Hayes

Honors Theses

The one child policy enacted by the Chinese government in 1979 has restricted the sizes of Chinese families and led to an abnormal male-dominated sex ratio. Abnormal sex ratios can have a variety of economic consequences that could work together to reduce the general welfare of the regions they exist in. This study aims to evaluate the effect of sex ratios on GRP (gross regional product) and GRP per capita through a series of linear regression models. Data used in this study was collected from the National Bureau of Statistics in China, a Chinese government organization in charge of collecting …

Workfare, Wellbeing And Consumption: Evidence From A Field Experiment With Kenya’S Urban Poor, Syon Bhanot, J. Han, C. Jang

Economics Faculty Works

Restrictions like work requirements and constraints on voucher transfers are often used in social welfare systems, but little empirical evidence exists on their impact on wellbeing. We conducted a 10-day randomized experiment with 432 individuals living below the poverty line in the Kawangware settlement of Nairobi, Kenya, testing two elements of social welfare design: workfare versus welfare and restricted versus unrestricted vouchers. Participants were randomly assigned to a “Work” condition, involving daily work for unrestricted vouchers, or one of two “Wait” conditions, involving daily waiting for vouchers that were either unrestricted or partially restricted to staple foods. We find that …
