A Noble Task: Testing An Operational Model Of Clergy Occupational Health, Drake Terry May 2018

A Noble Task: Testing An Operational Model Of Clergy Occupational Health, Drake Terry

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In many ways, clergy and religious leaders are an ignored yet high-risk population. A clergy member unable to cope with challenges in his or her own life may be ineffective at helping church members to cope with their stress. The purpose of the present study was to develop and test an operational model of clergy holistic health, including occupational demands, and personal and job-related resources. Data were collected from clergy (N = 418) and analyzed using correlational and regression based techniques. Results from the present study provided support for the demands-control-support model (Johnson & Hall, 1988). Specifically, clergy mental health …

Consumer Involvement In Japanese Pornography Production, Yukino Yamamoto, Caroline Norma, Ruwan Dep Weerasinghe

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The authors examined two pornographic film series produced in Japan in the first decade of the twenty-first century, as well as their DVD box cover advertising copy. Additionally, and crucially, these data were examined in light of online forum posts made by the producers and consumers of the two film series before, during and after their production. These posts indicate consumer-producer cooperation and collaboration in all aspects of the series’ planning and execution, in addition to consumer involvement in the perpetration of the filmed sex acts and abuses themselves. The discussion of the article emphasizes the accelerating effect of online …

Preemptive War, War Powers, And International Complications: A Need For Reform, Paige Montague May 2018

Preemptive War, War Powers, And International Complications: A Need For Reform, Paige Montague

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

In March 2003, the United States declared official war on Iraq out of fear that Suddam Hussein has nuclear weapons. This war was declared after the United Nations Security Council ruled that the Preemptive War was illegal. Preemptive War is a strange loophole under the War Powers Act and gives the President ability to declare war under the potential of a future threat. The Iraq War did not yield the intended results nor were any nuclear weapons found. Had congress been mandated under an amendment to approve the Preemptive War, the poor consequences both on a domestic and international level …

Examining The Constitutionality Of Executive Orders: Daca, Dapa, And The Take Care Clause, Seth Konopasek May 2018

Examining The Constitutionality Of Executive Orders: Daca, Dapa, And The Take Care Clause, Seth Konopasek

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The debate over the scope of presidential powers is even older than the Constitution itself and in our modern political era, this debate turns largely on Executive Orders. From internment camps and steel seizures to Dreamers and travel bans, Executive Orders have long been at the center of political controversy, and yet the Supreme Court has not developed any consistent method for their judgement. Indeed, they have not made a significant ruling on non-military presidential powers in nearly seventy years. The Court signaled their intention to rule upon the subject in 2016 when they granted certiorari to Texas v US, …

Children's Role In Termination Of Parental Rights Proceedings, Makayla Okamura, Michael Kummerman May 2018

Children's Role In Termination Of Parental Rights Proceedings, Makayla Okamura, Michael Kummerman

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

People often argue that young children - especially vulnerable children - cannot gauge their best interests very well. But it turns out that there is success when courts allow children to have a voice in matters of child welfare cases. Various cultures and ideologies see child accountability in different ways. Considering those cultures and values and then factoring in the experiences of judges reveals that child are more capable of determining there best interests than currently policy acknowledges. Though the decision should not rest solely on the child's input, it should be heavily weighted when a judge makes a child …

Can Mentoring Help Reduce The Risk Of Recidivism? An Analysis Of The Serious And Violent Offender Reentry Initiative (Svori) Data, Amanda Claire Workman May 2018

Can Mentoring Help Reduce The Risk Of Recidivism? An Analysis Of The Serious And Violent Offender Reentry Initiative (Svori) Data, Amanda Claire Workman

Theses and Dissertations

This research project investigates the effectiveness of mentors on rates of self-reported criminal offending for released offenders. I use data from the Serious and Violent Offender Reentry Initiative (SVORI) study (2004-2007), which sought to evaluate factors relating to high-risk offenders outcomes post release in an effort to reduce the societal problem of mass incarceration. Previous research has examined the use of mentors to improve the delinquent and criminogenic behavior of youth, but little is known about the effectiveness of mentors used to aid imprisoned adult males. I utilize negative binomial analysis to compare the number of self-reported criminal activities among …

Does Inequality Erode Cooperation In The Classroom? Evidence From Pisa 2015, Paul E. Sum, Gabriel Bădescu May 2018

Does Inequality Erode Cooperation In The Classroom? Evidence From Pisa 2015, Paul E. Sum, Gabriel Bădescu

Political Science & Public Administration Faculty Publications

We consider the relationship between SES equality and cooperation among high school students. We find that inequality decreases the acquisition of cooperation skills, a key ingredient to sustained democracy. Generalized trust and political equality counteract this effect independently. Further, trust and political equality moderate the influence of inequality, reaffirming the importance of education to democratic citizenship.

Evaluating Implicit Self-Compassion In College Students, Emily Kutok May 2018

Evaluating Implicit Self-Compassion In College Students, Emily Kutok

Senior Honors Projects

Typically, research on self-compassion and mental health has used the measurement tool of self-report (explicit) surveys to examine self-compassion. Implicit Association Tests (IAT) can be applied to a number of di erent constructs, some of which include racial biases, gender stereotypes, and suicidal ideation. ey are used to measure the strength of a person’s automatic association between two concepts (in this case, between self and compassion). By measuring implicit self-compassion, a researcher can expect less self-report bias related to self- presentational concerns and the limits of introspection, and they can capture psychological processes that occur without full conscious awareness but …

The Influence Of Regional Power Distributions On Interdependence, Michael A. Allen May 2018

The Influence Of Regional Power Distributions On Interdependence, Michael A. Allen

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Political economy debates about the influence of power configurations in expanding and maintaining global liberalization ebb and flow with the wax and wane of the concentration of power in the international system. This article engages the debate in a novel way from previous scholarship. Employing a series of econometric models that account for regional power, I argue that the global power concentration is ill fit to be the primary predictor of trade liberalization, but instead, regional power fluctuations can dampen and enhance global trends. By incorporating sub-systemic power configurations, we gain a better understanding of the regional variation in states …

Policing For The Community, Jeffrey Munoz May 2018

Policing For The Community, Jeffrey Munoz

Senior Honors Projects

As a society, we are currently in a period of time where the community reflects their dissatisfaction with law enforcement by staging protests, organizing groups who demand change and unfortunately at times displaying a degree of violence towards authority. These issues are products of controversial police shootings like those of the killings of Tamir rice, Freddie Gray and Eric Garner in which all demonstrated a reasonable degree of uncertainty. The fact of the matter lies within the officers’ actions as they manifest an inherent racial bias seen one to many times by populations that have been oppressed throughout history. The …

Why We Ask Why: The Ways In Which Control And Stereotyping Biases Affect Internal Attributions, Tia Francis May 2018

Why We Ask Why: The Ways In Which Control And Stereotyping Biases Affect Internal Attributions, Tia Francis

Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Since the idea of attributions was famously discussed by Fritz Heider (1958), a wide array of empirical research has focused on the phenomenon. Included within the sphere of attributional theories are internal attributions, which have been of particular interest to the psychological community for decades. Although there is no comprehensive theory for why people make these attributions, literature points to establishing control as a possible motivator. In addition, research suggests that people may make more extreme internal attributions about minorities, particularly when they are not aware they are relying on stereotypes. Participants (N = 377) observed a modified version of …

Reconstructing Landscape Use Patterns Using Strontium Isotope Ratios, Marian Irene Hamilton May 2018

Reconstructing Landscape Use Patterns Using Strontium Isotope Ratios, Marian Irene Hamilton

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation uses modern habitats and fauna to model the variability and predictive power of strontium isotope ratios in identifying dispersal patterns in primates and habitat preference in primate and non-primate fauna. It concludes that there are significant isotopic differences between gallery forest and xeric grassland habitats in the same area and that these differences are reflected in fauna with habitat preferences for one or the other. It also identifies the most reliable methodological approaches for identifying the philopatric and dispersing sex in primate communities. Finally, it applies this methodological recommendation to strontium isotope data from South African hominins, concluding …

Resolving The Populist Paradox : Politics, Perception, And Identity In The United States, Pierre Avalos May 2018

Resolving The Populist Paradox : Politics, Perception, And Identity In The United States, Pierre Avalos

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The concept of populism is ubiquitous in the international arena. Whether in Brexit, the surge of nationalism in display across the international system, or Donald Trump's presidency, populism is a mainstay of modern social, political, and economic systems. Although it’s historical and conceptual aspects are instructive, populism's most defining elements are revealed in its socioeconomic aspects. This is represented in a politicalcultural model, which considers its conceptual imperatives based on the ideological approach to defining populism, and a refinement of this model that relies upon the prevalence of economic factors and cultural factors. The purpose of this research is to …

Crawling Through Life : The Counseling Experiences Of Women Who Have Placed A Child For Adoption, Elliotte Sue Harrington May 2018

Crawling Through Life : The Counseling Experiences Of Women Who Have Placed A Child For Adoption, Elliotte Sue Harrington

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Placing a child for adoption can be a life changing experience. Some women who place their children for adoption (birth mothers) report feelings of depression, anxiety, posttrauma, and grief. At times they may feel rejected or isolated. They may view themselves in the negative way that they may be perceived by family, friends, and society in general. All of these feelings and experiences, among many other life experiences, may lead a birth mother to seek and attend counseling. The purpose of this study was to help counselors, researchers, and educators to begin to understand how birth mothers describe their experiences …
