Killing Martin County : Resiliency In A Central Appalachian Community., David Adam Sizemore
Killing Martin County : Resiliency In A Central Appalachian Community., David Adam Sizemore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Environmental stressors, anything that poses a threat to human and environmental health, are disproportionately located in marginalized communities. Coal extraction companies produce and concentrate environmental stressors in Central Appalachia, a sub-region of Appalachia with high poverty rates and economic hardship. Through destructive coal extraction methods, the coal industry has jeopardized Central Appalachian health and environmental quality. The coal industry’s power to cause destruction in Central Appalachia is a product of historical strategic initiatives. Since the late 1800s, the coal industry has forcefully altered the culture and ideology of Central Appalachians and developed relationships with local, state, and federal policymakers to …
There Is Water In The World For Us : The Environmental Theories Of Alice Walker., Janae Lewis Hall
There Is Water In The World For Us : The Environmental Theories Of Alice Walker., Janae Lewis Hall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The emergence of African-American Environmental thought responds to the ongoing erasure of Black experiences and their perspectives on nature. Mainstream environmentalism maintains a legacy of perceived innocence and incorruptibility towards the land, while Black Environmentalism demonstrates the limitations of that ideology. Limitations include the erasure of history in regards to stealing land from Indigenous people, the brutality of slavery, legalized lynching, forced removal from the land, exploitation in sharecropping, destruction of sacred lands, heavy pollution in urban centers, and harmful environmental policies. For Black and Indigenous peoples, it is impossible to view American soil as innocent. This project surveyed the …
State-Reinforced Self-Governance Of Community-Managed Open Spaces In Chicago, Il And Louisville, Ky., Willow Sequoia Dietsch
State-Reinforced Self-Governance Of Community-Managed Open Spaces In Chicago, Il And Louisville, Ky., Willow Sequoia Dietsch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As urban populations rise, small greenspaces, like gardens, are increasingly important to well-being of communities, and urban sustainability as a whole. However, past development, and current political and economic challenges encumber many cities in providing adequate greenspace. Cities like Chicago, IL and Louisville, KY have turned to the communities to manage greenspaces with help from partner organizations. This thesis examines these arrangements, and compares them in terms of several potential factors, (i.e. legal authority, responsibility, and support). Semi-structured interviews of important community greenspace stakeholders, and archival sources including original documents, news articles, and government reports, were used to understand the …
Confidence In The Police Among Caribbean Countries., Hyunin Baek
Confidence In The Police Among Caribbean Countries., Hyunin Baek
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation identifies public confidence in the police in contemporary policing, in particular among Caribbean countries. Law enforcement agencies in Caribbean countries have failed to earn confidence from the public. Citizens with a lower level of confidence in the police are unwilling to cooperate and support policing activities, making initiatives of law enforcement agencies difficult to achieve. In order to improve the public-police relationship in Caribbean countries, examinations of public confidence in the police are required. Researchers have developed two theoretical frameworks, the instrumental and expressive models, to explain key factors associated with public confidence in the police. In order …
Utilizing A School-Based Treatment To Address Socially Anxious Elementary School Students, Mckell Nelson
Utilizing A School-Based Treatment To Address Socially Anxious Elementary School Students, Mckell Nelson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Despite the availability of promising clinic-based programs, youth exhibiting socially anxious behaviors rarely receive the treatment they may need. Those that do get treatment, often do so in the school setting. Thus, the demand for effective interventions to address those needs in the school-setting is growing. The present study investigated the effects of a modified CBT intervention, delivered in the school setting, on positive peer interactions and self-rating social anxiety. Results showed that the treatment package provided an increase in positive peer interactions across all four participants, as well as a decrease in self-rated anxiety behaviors.

This study examined the efficacy of a brief culturally and instructionally modified cognitive behavioral therapy program for five anxious Latino/a youths ages 8-11 years in an elementary school setting. Each student exhibited anxiety in a classroom setting as reported by their teachers and parents or guardians. A noncurrent multiple baseline design was implemented using A-B replications to assess the effects of baseline and treatment on daily self-report student distress ratings as well as daily teacher rated distress, academic engagement, and work completion. All participants completed the Revised Children’s Manifest Anxiety Scale-2 pre- and post-treatment as well as a Children’s Intervention …
Marginal Mediation Analysis: A New Framework For Interpretable Mediated Effects, Tyson S. Barrett
Marginal Mediation Analysis: A New Framework For Interpretable Mediated Effects, Tyson S. Barrett
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Mediation analysis is built to answer not only if one variable affects another, but how the effect takes place. However, it lacks interpretable effect size estimates in situations where the mediator (an intermediate variable) and/or the outcome is categorical or otherwise non-normally distributed. By integrating a powerful approach known as average marginal effects within mediation analysis—termed Marginal Mediation Analysis (MMA)—the issues regarding categorical mediators and/or outcomes are, in large part, resolved. This new approach allows the estimation of the indirect effects (those effects of the predictor that affect the outcome through the mediator) that are interpreted in the same way …
Changing Nonhuman Impulsive Choice, C. Renee Renda
Changing Nonhuman Impulsive Choice, C. Renee Renda
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Preference for smaller-sooner over larger-later rewards characterizes one type of impulsivity—impulsive choice. Impulsive choice is related to a number of maladaptive behaviors including substance abuse, pathological gambling, and poor health behaviors. As such, interventions designed to reduce impulsive choice may have therapeutic benefits. The purpose of this dissertation was to explore two methods to change nonhuman impulsive choice. In doing so, we hope to provide a baseline that future research can use to assess variables that are less amenable to human research (e.g., drug self-administration following reductions in impulsive choice). In Chapter 2, we failed to reduce nonhuman impulsive choice …
Does Neighborhood Context Matter? A Multilevel Analysis Of Neighborhood Disadvantage And Sleep Health, Carlyn E. Graham
Does Neighborhood Context Matter? A Multilevel Analysis Of Neighborhood Disadvantage And Sleep Health, Carlyn E. Graham
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Childhood is one of the most important stages for physical and cognitive growth during the life course. For young children, sleep is one of the major contributors to healthy development; poor sleep quality and short sleep duration can detrimentally affect developmental progress. In addition to physiological contributors to poor sleep, social factors may affect young children’s sleep. Prior findings suggest that demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, such as race and parent’s educational attainment, may contribute to sleep health for children. Furthermore, limited prior research suggests that neighborhood attributes may affect sleep for both children and adults alike. To my knowledge, no …
Essays On Natural Resources And Economic Development, Ahsan Kibria
Essays On Natural Resources And Economic Development, Ahsan Kibria
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This dissertation studies the political economy of natural resources and how these resources may pose an opportunity or a threat to a country and comprises three essays.
The first essay explores how economic development can impact the consumption behavior of natural resources, with focus on fossil fuels. It suggests the existence of an inverted U-shaped relationship between fossil fuel share in the energy mix and economic development. Particularly, the essay illustrates an evidence that fossil fuel's share in the energy mix increases as a country develops, however, after reaching a real income per capita of around US$16,000, the country reduces …
Telepsychotherapy For The Treatment Of Trichotillomania: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Eric B. Lee
Telepsychotherapy For The Treatment Of Trichotillomania: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Eric B. Lee
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Trichotillomania is defined as recurrent pulling of one’s hair that results in distress and negative effects on general functioning and quality of life. Estimates of trichotillomania lifetime prevalence generally range from approximately 1% to 3% and it is likely as common as disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and agoraphobia. Yet, quality treatment for trichotillomania is often difficult to find as many mental health professionals are uninformed about the disorder and its treatment. Moreover, mental health services in general are inaccessible to many with estimates suggesting that 96.5 million people do not have access to adequate services. The use of telepsychology …

Three Essays In Economics Of Prey-Predator Relation, Dong-Hun Go
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This dissertation explores how natural ecosystem can be integrated with economic system through two case studies of multiple species interactions, or predator-prey relations. By the inclusion of biological, ecological and economic aspects, the integrated approaches aim at more clearly understanding of how regional ecosystem and economy interact with each other, given threats of resource extinction and environmental shock. I also explain strategies and policy regimes that can be considered to achieve efficient and sustainable ecosystem management in those circumstances.
The first case study focuses on a predator-prey relation in the Pacific Ocean between the United States and Canada, where endangered/threatened …

Be Cool, Stay In School: The Habits, Resources, And Confidence College Students Need To Succeed, Matthew Staheli
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Earning a college degree yields many benefits. In addition to an increased income, college degree earners generally have greater job satisfaction, make healthier life choices, are better communicators, and have greater social mobility. Even with all of these benefits, however, some colleges are seeing graduation rates as low as 32%. One of the greatest contributing factors affecting the dropout rate of undergraduate college students is poor academic performance in their courses. In this study, we sought to identify several academic resources, study behaviors, academic self-confidence scores, and demographic information to assess what types of behaviors and resources may lead to …
Latent Difference Score Mediation Analysis In Developmental Research: A Monte Carlo Study And Application, Melissa Simone
Latent Difference Score Mediation Analysis In Developmental Research: A Monte Carlo Study And Application, Melissa Simone
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Developmental and prevention researchers aim to determine how unhealthy behaviors emerge. Mediation analysis offers a statistical tool that allows researchers to describe the processes underlying early risk and later health outcomes. Among existing longitudinal mediation models, latent difference score mediation stands out due to its unique ability to capture variations in changes both within and across individuals, as well as its ability to examine non-linear change over time. However, the literature currently lacks sample size guidelines for latent difference mediation models, which has proven to make the use of these models difficult. The current project addresses this limitation by offering …

Assessing Variation In Air Quality Perception: A Case Study In Utah, Karen Jayne Mendenhall
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In recent years, Utah has experienced poor air quality due to pollution-trapping winter inversions and summer ozone pollution. The resulting impacts of poor air quality include health issues, reduced visibility, economic impacts and ecological impacts. Utah’s topography and exploding urban population are factors which increase human exposure to these adverse impacts of air pollution. It is important for State and local governments to understand how people perceive air quality so that clean air campaigns target those who are most likely to foster pro-environmental behaviors. An analysis was conducted using data from a state-wide survey conducted in July 2017. The survey …

On Sundays, they flood the streets in full force, relaxing and taking advantage of their one day off a week. This population faces many challenges during their time in Hong Kong – these challenges are modern as well as historical and include financial, governmental, emotional, and social challenges. Along with the challenges of day to day life, they also face challenges in that their stories …
Gender Boundary Negotiation Within The U.S. Immigrant/Refugee Resettlement : How Transnational Bridge-Building Matters., Telesphore Kagaba
Gender Boundary Negotiation Within The U.S. Immigrant/Refugee Resettlement : How Transnational Bridge-Building Matters., Telesphore Kagaba
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For the past several decades, social research about U.S. immigrant and refugee resettlement has focused on some of the ways federal and non-governmental organizations help immigrants and refugees integrate into mainstream society. Little research, if any, has explored how giving voice to immigrants and refugees is done in bridging transnational gaps and strengths in the process of their adjustment to the host country. This dissertation is grounded within transnational theory (Avenarius 2012, Levitt 2011, Peteet 1997) that argues that immigrants and refugees bring their experiences and cultures from their home countries, time in refugee camps, and other often traumatic experiences …
A Qualitative Case Study Examination Of Athlete Ally Using Social Movement Theory., Samuel H. Schmidt
A Qualitative Case Study Examination Of Athlete Ally Using Social Movement Theory., Samuel H. Schmidt

Testing and training for user emotional competence is meaningful in healthcare field, which has motivated us to analyze immersive affective games using emotional feedbacks. In this dissertation, a systematic model of designing interactive environment is presented, which consists of three essential modules: affect modeling, affect recognition, and affect control. In order to collect data for analysis and construct these modules, a series of experiments were …
The Impact Of Reinforcement Contingency On Interresponse Time Variability In Rats, Jarod Clark Roberts
The Impact Of Reinforcement Contingency On Interresponse Time Variability In Rats, Jarod Clark Roberts
Student Theses and Dissertations
Current research in the area of operant variability suggests that response variability can be controlled by operant reinforcement; however, there have been few studies of variation in timing of responses. To investigate the latter phenomenon, five female Wistar rats were exposed to a series of contingencies in which subjects were required to vary the times between lever press responses in order to obtain reinforcement. After a baseline condition, rats were exposed to three increasingly demanding variability contingencies with a return to baseline following each, and finally a comparison phase in which reinforcement probability was limited. It was predicted that subjects …

Neural Mechanisms Of The Rejection-Aggression Link, David S. Chester, Donald R. Lynam, Richard Milich, C. Nathan Dewall
Psychology Faculty Publications
Social rejection is a painful event that often increases aggression. However, the neural mechanisms of this rejection–aggression link remain unclear. A potential clue may be that rejected people often recruit the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex’s (VLPFC) self-regulatory processes to manage the pain of rejection. Using functional MRI, we replicated previous links between rejection and activity in the brain’s mentalizing network, social pain network and VLPFC. VLPFC recruitment during rejection was associated with greater activity in the brain’s reward network (i.e. the ventral striatum) when individuals were given an opportunity to retaliate. This retaliation-related striatal response was associated with greater levels of …

Effects Of Goal Training On Goal Structures, Charlotte S. Redhead
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
In this study, a goal training intervention was developed and evaluated. The main purpose of this investigation was to provide evidence that training, constructed according to implications drawn from goal theory, can affect student goal setting and achievement. Unique to this investigation was that training targeted both short- and long-term goal setting processes linked to career goal pursuits. Findings indicated that goal training resulted in students’ productions of career goal hierarchies consistent with theoretical prescriptions of quality goal structures. This study has implications for those in positions to develop and mentor individuals’ pursuit of long-term meaningful goals across settings.
