Narrative Form And Agency In #Metoo, Katherine Wolfe May 2018

Narrative Form And Agency In #Metoo, Katherine Wolfe

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

As the hashtag #MeToo spread from Alyssa Milano to her multitude of followers and beyond in October of 2017, it became not just a hashtag, but a movement fueled by hashtag activism. Through retweets and the sharing of stories of sexual assault and harassment, appearing one after another on feeds and timelines in a tragic litany of cultural failure, each individual participant contributed to a larger narrative. This paper argues that those stories, taken collectively, have narrative agency and form as defined by Campbell (2005) as “the capacity to act . . . in a way that will be recognized” …

The Role Of Music In The Revitalization Of Faroese In The Faroe Islands, Rachel Manning May 2018

The Role Of Music In The Revitalization Of Faroese In The Faroe Islands, Rachel Manning

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper describes the role of music in the revitalization of the Faroese language in the Faroe Islands. It begins with an overview of the linguistic background and history of the Faroe Islands, including an account of how the Faroese people and their language were put at a disadvantage against the politically and economically dominant Norwegians and Danes. Next, the paper introduces non-musical revitalization measures, such as creating a writing system and fighting for the language to be incorporated into education and administration. After this, the paper delves into musical revitalization measures, focusing on how the deep oral and musical …

From Battlegrounds To Phone Screens: The Use Of Images During The Syrian Refugee Crisis, Christine Ayad

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper analyzes digital forms of rhetoric used in framing refugees throughout the Syrian Refugee Crisis as part of a communications seminar (COMM 460: Seminar in Digital Rhetoric). Sponsored by Professor Anand Rao, From Battlegrounds to Phone Screens: The Use of Images During the Syrian Refugee Crisis analyzes media images’ central role in shaping public perceptions of the refugees. It is the goal of this paper to highlight some of these perceptions. My primary research question is as follows: How do images of Syrian refugees affect public perceptions of the Syrian refugee crisis? There are stark differences between images posted …

Playing It Cool: Characterizing Social Play, Bout Termination, And Candidate Play Signals Of Juvenile And Infant Tibetan Macaques (Macaca Thibetana), Kaitlin R. Wright, Jessica A. Mayhew, Lori K. Sheeran, Jake A. Funkhouser, Ronald S. Wagner, Li-Xing Sun, Jin-Hua Li

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Play behaviors and signals during playful interactions with juvenile conspecifics are important for both the social and cognitive development of young animals. The social organization of a species can also influence juvenile social play. We examined the relationships among play behaviors, candidate play signals, and play bout termination in Tibetan macaques (Macaca

thibetana) during juvenile and infant social play to characterize the species play style. As Tibetan macaques are despotic and live in groups with strict linear dominance hierarchies and infrequent reconciliation, we predicted that play would be at risk of misinterpretation by both the individuals engaged in the play …

Pointing A Telescope Toward The Night Sky: Transparency And Intentionality As Teaching Techniques, Beth Fuchs May 2018

Pointing A Telescope Toward The Night Sky: Transparency And Intentionality As Teaching Techniques, Beth Fuchs

Library Presentations

How often do you provide your students with a telescope to better view your instructional intentions? Recent research from The Transparency in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education Project at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas has shown that students benefit when teachers articulate the thought processes behind their instructional decisions and goals. How can transparent teaching practices enhance the professional practice of instruction librarians, even when leading a one-shot session? This workshop will explore the research behind transparent teaching, consider the assumptions that underlie it, and provide practical ways to implement it.

Participants will:

  • define transparent teaching in order …

An Analysis Of Socio-Economic Consequences Of Cancer In Nepal, Soumi Roy Chowdhury May 2018

An Analysis Of Socio-Economic Consequences Of Cancer In Nepal, Soumi Roy Chowdhury

Economics ETDs

This dissertation investigates the socio-economic burden of cancer patients using a primary survey in Nepal. Given the low uptake rate of cancer screening facilities in developing countries, my study covers three important issues: the need of information dissemination on cancer prevention among asymptomatic individuals, the emotional stress of cancer patients in relation to a control group of patients, and the severity of economic burden due to premature cancer related deaths measured at the national and individual levels. In developing countries with low level of information and awareness, it is difficult to communicate the importance of cancer preventative measures to the …

Non-Traditional Transitional Justice Mechanisms And Perceptions And Symptoms Of Victimization Among Diasporic Individuals: Members Of The Coptic Christian Diaspora In The United States As A Case Study, Samy S. A. Gerges May 2018

Non-Traditional Transitional Justice Mechanisms And Perceptions And Symptoms Of Victimization Among Diasporic Individuals: Members Of The Coptic Christian Diaspora In The United States As A Case Study, Samy S. A. Gerges

Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations

Transitional justice measures are state-centered measures articulating atrocities committed by officials and occurring within the borders of a specific state. Questioning members of a Diaspora about the impact of transitional justice on their self-classification as victims and their experienced symptoms of victimization may therefore support attempts to expand the field of transitional justice. This study contributes to a body of work promoting understanding of the possibilities and constraints of transitional justice mechanisms, in the context of hate crime against Copts by Muslims in Egypt. To analyze the impact of restored relationships on self-classified victimhood and experienced symptoms of victimization, the …

Interinstitutional Student Success, Chelsea Heinbach, Brittany P. Fiedler, Rosan Mitola May 2018

Interinstitutional Student Success, Chelsea Heinbach, Brittany P. Fiedler, Rosan Mitola

Library Faculty Presentations

Transfer students make up 37.2% of college students in the United States (NSCRC 2015), but often aren’t considered in our design of instruction and outreach programs. They quickly blend in with the rest of the campus upon arrival, potentially causing libraries to fail in serving them appropriately. What services and resources do transfer students need? What knowledge and experiences are they bringing to the university? How can libraries collaborate with on- and off-campus partners?

In Fall 2017 and Spring 2018, we surveyed and interviewed transfer students at various points in their academic career. We focused on gaining an understanding of …

A Study Of Self-Disclosure And Awareness, Ryan Coleman May 2018

A Study Of Self-Disclosure And Awareness, Ryan Coleman

Undergraduate Theses

This study was an attempt to replicate the findings of a 2013 experiment that found self-disclosure can be influenced through priming (Grecco, Robbins, Bartoli & Wolff). The study also concluded that their participants were unaware of the priming effects the experiment had on them. This study challenged this conclusion by manipulating depth of processing across priming conditions as a way of assessing conscious processing of the primes. The priming influence on self-disclosure was not replicated in the present study. Additionally, this study was unable to find a significant main effect of depth. A significant result was found in a memory …

We Love Big Brother: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Orwell’S Nineteen Eighty-Four And Modern Politics In The United States And Europe, Edward Pankowski May 2018

We Love Big Brother: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Orwell’S Nineteen Eighty-Four And Modern Politics In The United States And Europe, Edward Pankowski

Honors Scholar Theses

In recent months since the election of Donald Trump to the Presidency of the United States in November 2016, George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four has seen a resurgence in sales, and terms invented by Orwell or brought about by his work, such as “Orwellian,” have re-entered the popular discourse. This is not a new phenomenon, however, as Nineteen Eighty-Four has had a unique impact on each of the generations that have read it, and the impact has stretched across racial, ethnic, political, and gender lines. This thesis project will examine the critical, popular, and scholarly reception of Nineteen Eighty-Four since its …

The Resilience Of Clientelism In Menem's Argentina, Marina Castro-Meirelles May 2018

The Resilience Of Clientelism In Menem's Argentina, Marina Castro-Meirelles

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper explains the resilience of clientelism in Argentina from 1989 to 1999, or the years of Carlos Menem’s presidency. Menem enacted sweeping neoliberal reforms, which leading theories predicted would extinguish clientelism. Nevertheless, it persisted throughout the decade. The paper first reconstructs the concept of clientelism, presenting a definition of the phenomenon. It then tests and finds support for two hypotheses to explain its resilience. The first, from the leading school of thought in the literature, predicts that the use of clientelism decreases with an increase in competition. I suggest a new hypothesis that Menem’s position relative to the Peronist …

Jury Decision Making & Graphic Evidence: The Effects Of Auditory Vs. Visual Presentation, Olivia Katherine Smith May 2018

Jury Decision Making & Graphic Evidence: The Effects Of Auditory Vs. Visual Presentation, Olivia Katherine Smith

Student Theses and Dissertations

Research shows that graphic evidence in the form of visual photographs leads to an increase in guilty verdicts, but other presentation formats, such as auditory (e.g. 911 calls), have not been thoroughly examined. With the technological advances today, it is important to study the effects of modernized evidence. The current research examines the effects of presentation format of evidence (visual or auditory) and evidence content (graphic or nongraphic) on juror opinions regarding the likelihood of defendant guilt. In the four-condition study, 222 participants read an identical trial summary and examined relevant evidence. Results showed that regardless of presentation format, graphic …

It’S A Match! The Procedural Rhetoric Of Gaming And Online Dating In Tinder, Christina Brown May 2018

It’S A Match! The Procedural Rhetoric Of Gaming And Online Dating In Tinder, Christina Brown

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper explores the procedural rhetoric of the popular dating app Tinder. I argue that through its procedural rhetoric, Tinder functions to gamify dating, and provides a persuasive game worthy of rhetorical analysis. In this paper, I focus on the first two phases of a procedural rhetoric approach for studying online dating outlined by Shepherd (2016) — 1) gathering information on app functionality and 2) engaging with the user experience. Not only do the procedures and message blurbs gamify Tinder, but they also call users to action, combat negative stereotypes surrounding dating and Tinder, and seek to create a commonality …

Grammatical Gender Acquisition In L2 Spanish, Alanna Quinn, Mónica Cabrera May 2018

Grammatical Gender Acquisition In L2 Spanish, Alanna Quinn, Mónica Cabrera

Honors Thesis

Grammatical gender, identified as “one of the most difficult structures that non-native speakers need to acquire” (Alamry & Sabourin, 2017) does not exist in English. L1 English speakers learning L2 Spanish must acquire this new grammatical feature. This thesis investigates this acquisition.

A literature review synthesizes the findings of studies on L2 acquisition of Spanish grammatical gender, and includes an overview of the structure and function of gender within both English and Spanish, as well as a variety of L2 acquisition process hypotheses. An analysis of four introductory Spanish textbooks is offered regarding their presentation of grammatical gender. The findings …

Universal Alienation And The Real Subsumption Of Daily Life Under Capital: A Response To Hardt And Negri, David Harvey

Publications and Research

This contribution is part of a debate between Michael Hardt/Toni Negri and David Harvey on the occasion of Marx’s bicentenary (May 5, 2018). The discussion focuses on the question of what capitalism looks like today and how it can best be challenged. In this article, David Harvey responds to Hardt and Negri’s previous debate-contributions.

Analysis Of The Contribution Of Transportation And Land Use To Citizen Perceptions Of Livability, Rebecca Lewis May 2018

Analysis Of The Contribution Of Transportation And Land Use To Citizen Perceptions Of Livability, Rebecca Lewis

PSU Transportation Seminars

What is livability? How does the built environment influence resident perceptions of livability? Although livability is a broadly used term and a key goal in land use and transportation plans at the state level, it is unclear whether residents think their neighborhoods are livable and what contributes to their perception of livability. The purpose of the project was to understand how Oregonians, in neighborhoods of varying densities and within Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), perceive livability at the nexus of transportation and land use. We sought to understand how residents define and perceive livability in three different MPOs in the state: …

A Socioeconomic Valuation Of Urban Wetland Ecosystems And Policy Recommendation For College Lake, Michael Dunmyer May 2018

A Socioeconomic Valuation Of Urban Wetland Ecosystems And Policy Recommendation For College Lake, Michael Dunmyer

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Cityscapes in the United States are often viewed dichotomously in regards to natural environments. Preserved sites can be seen as an obstacle to urban development, and the concept of a functioning ecosystem within city limits is fictitious to many; we assume the two cannot coexist. Lynchburg, Virginia’s College Lake offers a unique case study for how urban ecosystems can not only subsist within cities but provide pivotal functions for them as well. With the potential for a dam-breaching storm event increasing in possibility with each passing year, concerns regarding the structural integrity of the College Lake dam in Lynchburg, Virginia …

Examining The Mediating Influence Of Occupational Self-Efficacy And Perceived Organizational Support On The Relationship Between Perceived Managerial Coaching Behaviors And Employee Engagement Among Higher Education Enrollment Management Professionals, William S. Carrell May 2018

Examining The Mediating Influence Of Occupational Self-Efficacy And Perceived Organizational Support On The Relationship Between Perceived Managerial Coaching Behaviors And Employee Engagement Among Higher Education Enrollment Management Professionals, William S. Carrell

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

The U.S. higher education environment is characterized by significant governmental/regulatory scrutiny, increasing competition, decreasing State funding, and demands for professionals to do more with less. In this environment, managers are increasingly expected to take on functions typically associated with traditional human resource roles, in particular the training, development, and retention of employees, often with limited or no access to formalized training resources.

This study predicted that a relationship exists between the perceived managerial coaching behaviors enacted by a direct supervisor and employee engagement among manager-level employees in strategic enrollment management divisions within higher education institutions. The hypotheses predicted this relationship …

Perceptions Of Intra-Familial Child Sexual Abuse And Intimate Parent-Child Interactions, Qian-Wen Xie, Joshua Miller May 2018

Perceptions Of Intra-Familial Child Sexual Abuse And Intimate Parent-Child Interactions, Qian-Wen Xie, Joshua Miller

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications

The current study aimed to explore Chinese undergraduate students’ perceptions of intimate parent-child interactions (IPCI) and intra-familial Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) as well. 354 undergraduate students from 15 universities or colleges in Beijing were recruited to participate in an online-based survey. Results indicated that IPCI such as co-bathing and co-sleeping were very common among Chinese undergraduate students during childhood. Factors including the child’s age and gender, as well as the parent’s gender involved in IPCI were found to impact respondents’ perceptions of the appropriateness of those interactions. Moreover, respondents’ perceptions of the appropriateness of parent-child intimate interactions might also be …

A Program Evaluation Of Zgirls: The Role Of Cognitive Emotion Regulation In Predicting Mental Health Outcomes In Adolescent Girls, Julie Vieselmeyer May 2018

A Program Evaluation Of Zgirls: The Role Of Cognitive Emotion Regulation In Predicting Mental Health Outcomes In Adolescent Girls, Julie Vieselmeyer

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

This study investigated the impact of ZGiRLS, a sport-based youth development program (YDP) that seeks to empower adolescent girls by teaching psychological skills. Sport-based YDPs have shown great potential for promoting healthy psychological development (Anderson-Butcher et al., 2013), and may even serve a preventative function by providing an effective setting for developing positive traits, attitudes, and skills (Weissberg, Kumpfer, & Seligman, 2003). The purpose of this study was to conduct a program evaluation to explore the effectiveness of ZGiRLS. Four specific aims of the study were to examine (a) a change in psychological skills (i.e., self-talk and goal setting), (b) …

"Health Is An Achoot Beat": Factors Influencing Pakistani Journalists' Coverage Of Polio Vaccination, Sayyed Fawad Ali Shah May 2018

"Health Is An Achoot Beat": Factors Influencing Pakistani Journalists' Coverage Of Polio Vaccination, Sayyed Fawad Ali Shah

Communication ETDs

Pakistan is one of the three countries where polio remained endemic in 2017—the other two being Afghanistan and Nigeria. The highest number of polio cases, 15, was recorded in Pakistan in 2016. A majority of the polio cases emerged among the ethnically Pakhtun population living in Pakhtunkhwa, FATA (the Federally Administered Tribal Areas), and Karachi, a metropolitan city in the Sindh province where Pakhtun immigrants from Pakhtunkhwa and FATA work and live. The resistance to polio vaccination among Pakhtuns has been associated with several factors, including a lack of knowledge about polio and anti-polio vaccine, the ongoing “war on terror,” …
