The Urban Geographical Imagination In The Age Of Big Data, John Taylor Shelton
The Urban Geographical Imagination In The Age Of Big Data, John Taylor Shelton
Geography Faculty Publications
This paper explores the variety of ways that emerging sources of (big) data are being used to re-conceptualize the city, and how these understandings of what the urban is shapes the design of interventions into it. Drawing on work on the performativity of economics, this paper uses two vignettes of the ‘new urban science’ and municipal vacant property mapping in order to argue that the mobilization of Big Data in the urban context doesn’t necessarily produce a single, greater understanding of the city as it actually is, but rather a highly variegated series of essentialized understandings of the city that …
The Effectiveness Of Strong Start Curriculum On The Social Emotional Competence Of Second Grade Students, Crystal Nicole Fewkes
The Effectiveness Of Strong Start Curriculum On The Social Emotional Competence Of Second Grade Students, Crystal Nicole Fewkes
Theses and Dissertations
Social-emotional wellbeing is known to contribute to children's learning and general health. As a national priority in the United States, schools are called upon to foster social-emotional health in children as part of healthy child development (Durlack, Weissberg, Dymnick, Taylor, & Schellinger. 2011). The study reports the implementation and findings of an empirically supported classroom-based social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum in second grade students in a suburban South New Jersey school district. Using a two-group non-equivalent design, it is hypothesized that students who are taught of the SEL lessons will show significant improvement in their social-emotional competence in both school and …

Young women who regularly attend nightclubs are at risk for numerous health and social consequences, including mental distress, sexual and physical victimization and substance dependence. This paper uses a biopsychosocial framework to examine co-occurring mental health problems, victimization, substance dependence, sexual risk and physical pain among a sample of young women who use drugs (N = 222) in Miami’s club scene. The majority of women were under 24 years old, Hispanic, and identified as heterosexual. Almost all the women reported past 90-day use of alcohol, ecstasy/MDMA, marijuana, cocaine and prescription opioids and benzodiazepines; 32% of women reported being in a …

Time Travel, Labour History, And The Null Curriculum: New Design Knowledge For Mobile Augmented Reality History Games, Owen Gottlieb
Time Travel, Labour History, And The Null Curriculum: New Design Knowledge For Mobile Augmented Reality History Games, Owen Gottlieb
Articles
This paper presents a case study drawn from design-based research (DBR) on a mobile, place-based augmented reality history game. Using DBR methods, the game was developed by the author as a history learning intervention for fifth to seventh graders. The game is built upon historical narratives of disenfranchised populations that are seldom taught, those typically relegated to the 'null curriculum'. These narratives include the stories of women immigrant labour leaders in the early twentieth century, more than a decade before suffrage. The project understands the purpose of history education as the preparation of informed citizens. In paying particular attention to …

Analisis Strategi Keamanan Energi Cina Dalam Upaya Penurunan Emisi Karbon Melalui Pendekatan Konstruktivisme, Hidayat Chusnul Chotimah
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
The Chinese government has finally committed itself to reducing carbon emissions after having for years refused to limit its energy consumption levels due to industrialising efforts and economic development needs. The primary reason behind the policy change is the severe, life-threatening environmental damage resulted from industrialisation processes. The Chinese government has now set out strategic measures to safeguard its energy security by harmonising its climate change and economic policies. This is done to achieve carbon emission reduction through energy conservation and green economy development by developing renewable energy such as nuclear energy, hydropower, wind power, solar power and other undiscovered …

Aplikasi Soft System Methodology Dalam Analisis Diplomasi Angkatan Laut Indonesia Melalui Pengiriman Satgas Maritim Tni Pada Misi Unifil Mtf, Trio Sirmareza
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
This article discusses Indonesia's participation in UNIFIL MTF, as a way for the country to exercise its naval diplomacy. Using Ken Booth's theory of naval diplomacy as analytical framework and employing the Soft System Methodology model, this article seeks to explain Indonesia's motives for joining UNIFIL MTF, namely the maintenance of the world peace as stipulated by the country's constitution and concomitantly, Indonesia's interest to enhance its global role as middle power. The application of naval diplomacy and Soft System Methodology in this article provides a theoretical and methodological-informed analysis in scrutinising Indonesia's participation in international peacekeeping operation. By doing …

Mongolian Vowel Harmony And Palatalization, Joshua Sims, Dirk Elzinga
Mongolian Vowel Harmony And Palatalization, Joshua Sims, Dirk Elzinga
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Mongolian language is spoken by approximately 3,000,000 people in the East Asian nation of Mongolia. The language exhibits vowel harmony, a rare phenomenon where the vowels in a single word must belong to matching categories. Mongolian grammars traditionally classify the seven vowels as either “male” or “female,” as well as rounded or unrounded. The “male” vowels are pronounced with a retracted tongue root (RTR), sounding “darker,” while “female” vowels are pronounced with an advanced tongue root (ATR), sounding “lighter.” The vowel /i/ is considered neutral, neither male nor female, but its presence tends to change the pronunciation of male …
Strength-Based Assessment For Children With Autism And Related With Disabilities In Kosovo, Ari Kokol, Blake Hansen
Strength-Based Assessment For Children With Autism And Related With Disabilities In Kosovo, Ari Kokol, Blake Hansen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Kosovo was a focal point of conflict in the wars in Yugoslavia in the late 1990s. In 2008, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia leaving Kosovo partially recognized as an independent state today. Due to the combination of war, ethnic conflict, and poverty, Kosovo has been left with little resources available to meet the needs of parents and educators. Caring for children with these types of disabilities puts a heavy strain on Kosovar Families. “For parents of children with autism, identifying positive characteristics of the child and the relationship may be particularly beneficial because the stressors associated with the disability are …

The findings revealed that the teaching faculty and …
Survive Or Thrive: A Mixed Method Study Of Visiting Chinese Language Teachers' Identity Formation In The U.S. Classrooms, Li Xiang
Dissertations and Theses
In recent years in the United States, an increasing number of people are learning Mandarin, the dominant Chinese language in China. Because of the shortage of Mandarin teachers, many visiting teachers from China with Chinese educational background are teaching Mandarin in the U.S. schools. In the U.S. classrooms, these teachers are challenged to adapt to a new setting. This experience can lead them to changing their teaching identity, that is, their basic beliefs, attitudes and practices about teaching. Understanding how Chinese teachers may form a new teaching identity in the U.S. context serves to inform future professional development activities designed …
The Philosophical Worth Of Liberal Peacebuilding, Muhammad Waffa Kharisma
The Philosophical Worth Of Liberal Peacebuilding, Muhammad Waffa Kharisma
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
The concept of Liberal Peacebuilding is often associated with the failure of pushing liberalisation in war-torn failed states: the practice of liberal peacebuilding as a liberal project instead of a peacebuilding effort. The essay starts with breaking down the basic premises of a liberal peacebuilding and its ideological drive. Then, it identifies and evaluates the critics and alternatives to liberal peacebuilding. The essay sees that the implementation of fixed standard peacebuilding packages in vastly different scenarios and countries is the consequence of practicing liberal peacebuilding as a liberal project. This essay argues that liberal peacebuilding is worth saving if it …
Understanding The Body Of Christ: A Literature Review On Roman Catholic Church In International Relations, Michael Joseph Kristiono
Understanding The Body Of Christ: A Literature Review On Roman Catholic Church In International Relations, Michael Joseph Kristiono
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
The paper is a review article on how recent International Relations (“IR”) literature perceives the Roman Catholic Church. It attempts to show how the actorness of the Church is being represented on IR literatures written especially at post-Cold War era. The time frame is chosen because attention towards transnationalism and its corresponding actors has only emerged from that period of time, thus enabling scholarly discussion on religious actors. Firstly, this article is going to trace early mention of the Catholicism and IR. Then, it is going to explain how current IR scholars analyse the Church. It is found that majority …
Asean As 'Compartmentalized Regionalism': A Preliminary Discussion, Shofwan Al Banna Choiruzzad
Asean As 'Compartmentalized Regionalism': A Preliminary Discussion, Shofwan Al Banna Choiruzzad
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
This article tries to offer a new ontological perspective to scrutinize ASEAN as a form of 'compartmentalized regionalism'. In contrast to the general view of ASEAN diplomatic practitioners and academics who see the history of ASEAN as an evolution of a regional project that in the political and security dimension becomes a multidimensional regional region through 'widening and deepening', the idea of 'compartmental regionalism' replaces the development of ASEAN as the development of two separate regionalism projects in a single entity. Both regionalism projects have different settings, supplemented by different actors, and work based on differing logic. Thus, the development …

As part of a newly created library marketing plan, librarians at the College of Wooster undertook a study of the communication preferences of students, faculty, and staff in early 2015. The results of the survey helped to develop a comprehensive picture of what library resources and services these constituencies are interested in learning about, as well as when, where, and how they prefer to learn about them. This article describes the development, distribution, results, and analysis of the survey, and highlights the importance of campus-specific library marketing practices.
My Religion And My People: Levels Of Ingroup Identification And Christian Religious Orientations, Hayley L. Sparks Ms., Jonathan Gore
My Religion And My People: Levels Of Ingroup Identification And Christian Religious Orientations, Hayley L. Sparks Ms., Jonathan Gore
Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship
People adopt a variety of approaches to practice their religion, but to date there has been no examination as to how identification with one’s community, with Americans, and with all humanity may relate to different religious orientations. Two studies tested the hypotheses that 1) intrinsic religious orientation would be associated with all three levels of ingroup identification, 2) extrinsic religious orientation would be associated with community-level identification only, 3) quest religious orientation would be associated with humanity-level identification only, and 4) orthodox religious orientation would be associated with community- and country-level identification only. Study 2 controlled for several individual difference …
Rape Culture, Victim Blaming, And The Role Of Media In The Criminal Justice System, Lily K. Thacker
Rape Culture, Victim Blaming, And The Role Of Media In The Criminal Justice System, Lily K. Thacker
Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship
Rape culture and the practice of victim blaming are inherently linked phenomena, and both are prevalent in American society. The existence of a rape culture which normalizes sexual violence and blames rape victims for the attacks against them strongly affects the American criminal justice system, influencing both the outcomes of rape trials and the treatment of rape victims. In particular, the media’s methods of discussing and portraying rape are examined as primary sources for the perpetuation of rape culture, and the effects of these media representations of rape on the outcomes of real rape trials are also examined. The problematic …

Slavery, Civil War, And Contemporary Public Opinion In The South, Madison R. Swiney
Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship
This paper is an empirical extension of Avidit Acharya, Matthew Blackwell, and Maya Sen’s piece (forthcoming), “A Culture of Disenfranchisement: How American Slavery Continues to Affect Voting Behavior.” In their project, Acharya, Blackwell and Sen (forthcoming) show that the counties that had more slaves versus free population in the nineteenth century are more likely to exhibit conservative attitudes in contemporary elections. I am extending this argument by measuring potential influence of Civil War battlegrounds on recent voting patterns and political predispositions. My project finds further support for Acharya, Blackwell and Sen’s study on the predictive power …

Does Social Support Diminish Depression In Students? Evidence From Athletes And Greek Life, Benjamin Chartoff, Myra Beth Bundy
Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship
Depression and stress are extremely prevalent in college students. The goal of the current study was to examine if social support from athletic teams and fraternities or sororities are related to lower levels of depression and stress than that found in students normally. Participants (N=134) were asked to fill out a questionnaire with scales of depression, stress and social support. It was hypothesized that members of Greek life and student-athletes will show higher levels of social support and lower levels of depression compared to a control group of students. The results supported these hypotheses and suggest that joining social groups …

Bivalve Stories And Snail Tales: Reconstructing The Late Archaic Environment At The Tomoka Complex, Northeast Florida, Steven R. England
Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship
Mollusks inhabit specific ecological niches and can be used as proxies for past environmental conditions. Changes in the composition of molluscan assemblages register changing ecological conditions and offer an opportunity to examine human responses to environmental change. This paper presents the preliminary analysis molluscan species from the Late Archaic Tomoka Complex in Northeast Florida. Changes in the species composition and frequency of mollusks coupled with the available radiometric assays are used to reconstruct the environmental conditions during the occupation of the Tomoka Complex and, importantly, the environmental conditions attending Late Archaic mortuary mound construction.
Fast Filtering Of Known Png Files Using Early File Features, Sean Mckeown, Gordon Russell, Petra Leimich
Fast Filtering Of Known Png Files Using Early File Features, Sean Mckeown, Gordon Russell, Petra Leimich
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
A common task in digital forensics investigations is to identify known contraband images. This is typically achieved by calculating a cryptographic digest, using hashing algorithms such as SHA256, for each image on a given media, comparing individual digests with a database of known contraband. However, the large capacities of modern storage media, and increased time pressure on forensics examiners, necessitates that more efficient processing mechanisms be developed. This work describes a technique for creating signatures for images of the PNG format which only requires a tiny fraction of the file to effectively distinguish between a large number of images. Highly …

Detect Kernel-Mode Rootkits Via Real Time Logging & Controlling Memory Access, Satoshi Tanda, Irvin Homem, Igor Korkin
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Modern malware and spyware platforms attack existing antivirus solutions and even Microsoft PatchGuard. To protect users and business systems new technologies developed by Intel and AMD CPUs may be applied. To deal with the new malware we propose monitoring and controlling access to the memory in real time using Intel VT-x with EPT. We have checked this concept by developing MemoryMonRWX, which is a bare-metal hypervisor. MemoryMonRWX is able to track and trap all types of memory access: read, write, and execute. MemoryMonRWX also has the following competitive advantages: fine-grained analysis, support of multi-core CPUs and 64-bit Windows 10. MemoryMonRWX …
Harnessing Predictive Models For Assisting Network Forensic Investigations Of Dns Tunnels, Irvin Homem, Panagiotis Papapetrou
Harnessing Predictive Models For Assisting Network Forensic Investigations Of Dns Tunnels, Irvin Homem, Panagiotis Papapetrou
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
In recent times, DNS tunneling techniques have been used for malicious purposes, however network security mechanisms struggle to detect them. Network forensic analysis has been proven effective, but is slow and effort intensive as Network Forensics Analysis Tools struggle to deal with undocumented or new network tunneling techniques. In this paper, we present a machine learning approach, based on feature subsets of network traffic evidence, to aid forensic analysis through automating the inference of protocols carried within DNS tunneling techniques. We explore four network protocols, namely, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, and POP3. Three features are extracted from the DNS tunneled traffic: …
