Money Over Marriage: Marriage Importance As A Mediator Between Materialism And Marital Satisfaction, Ashley B. Lebaron, Heather H. Kelley, Jason S. Carroll

While the negative relationship between materialism and marital satisfaction is well documented, mediators that possibly explain this association have not been widely explored. Based on the Incompatibility of Materialism and Children Model and Marital Paradigms Theory, this article explores the perception of marriage importance as a potential mediator between materialism and marital satisfaction. Using a sample of 1310 married individuals, we found evidence of partial mediation in that materialism was negatively associated with perception of marriage importance, and this association partially explained why being materialistic was associated with lower marital satisfaction. Linkedin At The Library: A Continuing Collaboration, Ariana Santiago, Emily Vinson, Esmeralda Fisher, Ashley Lierman, Mea Warren

Collaborative Librarianship

The University of Houston Libraries collaborated with University Career Services to host LinkedIn at the Library, an event where students were offered reviews of their LinkedIn profiles and free professional headshots. Although LinkedIn at the Library was initially funded as a one-time event, the two units worked together to turn it into a recurring event. This article presents our methods for collaboratively planning and hosting the events, attendance and assessment results, and lessons learned for future collaborative efforts. LinkedIn at the Library is a unique example of an academic library’s partnership with a career services unit.

Collaborative Librarianship

Academic library consortia have traditionally focused on resource sharing and e-resource purchasing as core programs and value propositions for members. However, as academic libraries increasingly look beyond financial value and seek to demonstrate impact on institutional priorities and student outcomes, consortia must evolve to provide services that support those goals. This paper presents selected examples of innovative consortial programs that can have a significant impact on teaching, learning, and research at members’ institutions as suggested models for other consortia that may be engaged in reviewing strategic priorities and programs.

One of the foremost government policies implemented in achieving Universal Health Coverage for the Indonesian population is the provision of financial assistance through contribution of Social Health Insurance for 92.4 million targeted poor and near poor households. This segment of the population is referred to as Penerima Bantuan Iuran (PBI) and represents about 35% of the total population. Stroke is divided into two categories, ischemic and hemorrhagic. Each year there are 15 million people around the world who suffer a stroke. Stroke treatment requires a high cost. The burden of heart disease and stroke from 2012 to 2030 reaches Rp. 1,7 trillion. This study aimed to analyze the comparison of direct and indirect costs of stroke patient in X hospital in 2017. The results showed that the number of ischemic stroke patients more than hemorrhagic stroke patients. Ancient art, artifacts, and architecture have long excited the intellectual curiosity and acquisitive passions of private and institutional collectors who, in turn, have funded archaeological research, preservation initiatives, and public education. Yet, the procurement of these goods also has encouraged looting and trafficking activities. Supplying collectors has destroyed much cultural evidence in source countries and has raised questions about who should control heritage and history. School District Consolidation Policies: Endogenous Cost Inefficiency And Saving Reversals, Mustafa U. Karakaplan, Levent Kutlu

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

Some education policy studies suggest that consolidation of public school districts saves resources. However, endogeneity in cost models would result in incorrect estimates of the effects of consolidation. We use a new stochastic frontier methodology to examine district expenditures while handling endogeneity. Using the data from California, we find that the effects of student achievement and education market concentration on expenditure per pupil are substantially larger when endogeneity is handled. Our findings are robust to concerns such as instrumental variable adequacy and spatial interactions. Our consolidation simulations indicate that failure to address endogeneity can result in unrealistic expectations of savings.
