Improving Pure-Tone Audiometry Using Probabilistic Machine Learning Classification, Xinyu Song Aug 2017

Improving Pure-Tone Audiometry Using Probabilistic Machine Learning Classification, Xinyu Song

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Hearing loss is a critical public health concern, affecting hundreds millions of people worldwide and dramatically impacting quality of life for affected individuals. While treatment techniques have evolved in recent years, methods for assessing hearing ability have remained relatively unchanged for decades. The standard clinical procedure is the modified Hughson-Westlake procedure, an adaptive pure-tone detection task that is typically performed manually by audiologists, costing millions of collective hours annually among healthcare professionals. In addition to the high burden of labor, the technique provides limited detail about an individual’s hearing ability, estimating only detection thresholds at a handful of pre-defined pure-tone …

For One Drop Of Blood: Virginity, Sexual Norms And Medical Processes In Hymenoplasty Consultations In The Netherlands, Sherria Ayuandini

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Hymenoplasty is a medical procedure done to alter the shape of the hymen membrane. Dutch women of predominantly Muslim migrant ancestry resort to the surgery to maintain the appearance of premarital virginity. This dissertation research studies hymenoplasty as a social phenomenon. It asks: how do the interconnecting issues of gender, religion and migration play out during interactions between doctors and Dutch patients of migrant ancestry in the medical and institutional context of hymenoplasty in the Netherlands? Findings were collected from 2012 and 2015 through participant observations of 70 hymenoplasty consultations in medical establishments in the Netherlands. These observations were complemented …

Essays On Liquidity, Informational Frictions, And Monetary Policy, Kee Youn Kang Aug 2017

Essays On Liquidity, Informational Frictions, And Monetary Policy, Kee Youn Kang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation, which consists of two chapters, is devoted to exploring the role of informational friction in monetary economics and finance.Chapter Ⅰ: COUNTERFEITING, SCREENING AND GOVERNMENT POLICY.In this chapter, I construct a search theoretic model of money in which counterfeit money can be produced at a cost but agents can screen for fake money also at a cost. Counterfeiting can occur in equilibrium when both costs and the inflation rate are sufficiently low. Optimal monetary policy is the Friedman rule. However, the rationale for the Friedman rule in an economy with the circulation of counterfeit money differs from the conventional …

Neurogenetics Of The Externalizing Spectrum, Caitlin E. Carey Aug 2017

Neurogenetics Of The Externalizing Spectrum, Caitlin E. Carey

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Externalizing spectrum disorders, which include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, alcohol and substance use disorders, and antisocial personality disorder, are characterized by behavioral disinhibition and are thought to be manifestations of a common heritable liability factor throughout the lifespan. However, relatively little is known about their underlying etiology. Here, I probe genetic and neural risk mechanisms for externalizing psychopathology in three complementary studies. First, I report an indirect association between genetic risk for childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and problem drinking in young adulthood, mediated by heightened reward-related neural activity within the ventral striatum, among 404 college students. I …

Intimate Partner Violence Among South Asian Women In The United States: Prevalence And Help-Seeking Behaviors, Vithya Murugan

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Data suggests that over 35% of women in the United States have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime and have reported significant short and long-term impacts, such as post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms and injury (Breiding et al., 2011). Ethnic/minority women are especially vulnerable to IPV with rates ranging from 44% for African American women to 46% for American Indian/Alaska Native women (Breiding et al., 2011).Although South Asians are some of the most recent immigrants, they are one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the United States, with a current population of 3.4 …

Mental Health And Academic Outcomes Among Adolescents In South Korean Orphanages, Hollee Ann Mcginnis Aug 2017

Mental Health And Academic Outcomes Among Adolescents In South Korean Orphanages, Hollee Ann Mcginnis

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Research conducted over the past 100 years in Western nations support the adverse effects of orphanages on children’s emotional, developmental, and social well-being as well as economic costs to society (Save the Children UK, 2009; Bakermans-Kranenburg, Van IJzendoorn & Juffer, 2008; Williams & Greenberg, 2010). Globally, the number of orphaned and abandoned children is conservatively estimated to be around 143 million, of whom the majority reside in Asia, followed by Sub-Saharan Africa (UNICEF, UNAIDS, & USAID, 2004). South Korea (hereafter “Korea”) is an exemplary nation for study because it has a well-established child welfare system, including family-based alternatives (domestic and …

A Context And Stakeholder Focused Exploration Of The Sustainability Of Local Organizations In Development, Brad Tucker Aug 2017

A Context And Stakeholder Focused Exploration Of The Sustainability Of Local Organizations In Development, Brad Tucker

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The design and development of this study emerged as the result of the investigator’s work with local nonprofit organizations (NPOs) in the Global South – particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Through experience and study, the investigator observed: 1) The conceptualization and the study of organizational sustainability and effectiveness (OS/OE) – both in scholarship and in practice – are fragmented and, while emphasizing the critical importance of context, do not explain how context impacts sustainability. 2) Existing conceptualizations of OS/OE lack the perspectives of key stakeholders – namely the management and staff of the local NPOs themselves. 3) There is a considerable …

Information Behaviour: Information Seeking Behaviour Of Law Practitioners, Hajaratu Mafo Ilo, Theresa Tochukwu Nwafornso, Eric Agada, Aondoana Daniel Orlu

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

In this study, trainee solicitors have been selected for the purpose of investigation. Trainee solicitors are working under a training contract, the final stage of the process of qualification as a solicitor. The trainees are therefore ideal participants for research of this nature as they are by the very nature of their training contracts, learners, and through an exploration of the work that they are given to undertake this research can explore how the trainees develop their knowledge and how their information behaviour contributes to that learning. To this and a constructivist approach to inquiry was adopted untilising a narrative …

News Literacy In The System Of Formal And Informal Media Education In Russia, Anna Kachkaeva Aug 2017

News Literacy In The System Of Formal And Informal Media Education In Russia, Anna Kachkaeva

First Global News Literacy Conference

A multifaceted approach to the solution of media information literacy problems has not yet taken shape in Russia, nor in many other countries, although society keeps placing greater emphasis on this issue. Up to this point, mandatory informational training in schools in Russia is regarded in an unjustifiably narrow way and is typically reduced to informatics courses, which teach students computer literacy skills. At the same time, the challenges of shaping knowledge and skills needed for understanding informational flows and media, both industrial structures and structures representing reality, mastering critical analysis and analytical information processing methods, are not being adequately …

Overcoming The Dark Side: Seeing Through The Spin Of Public Relations In The News, Samantha Stanley Aug 2017

Overcoming The Dark Side: Seeing Through The Spin Of Public Relations In The News, Samantha Stanley

First Global News Literacy Conference

In its current state, news literacy curriculum covers all the information types that consumers will see when they read, watch, listen to, and interact with news content. While current lessons do explain how press releases distribute information in the “promotion / publicity” neighborhood, there is much more nuance to the practice of PR that impacts information people read as ‘news’. In today’s climate of political spin cycles, it is more important than ever for news consumers to understand what public relations is and how its strategies influence news content. Because the practice of public relations is so often misunderstood and …

News Or Native Advertising, Hoang Xuan Phuong Aug 2017

News Or Native Advertising, Hoang Xuan Phuong

First Global News Literacy Conference

We are living in a world surrounded by media. Companies are constantly thinking of new ways of communicating and engaging with the public. When the reader is overwhelmed by advertisements in media, they are no longer persuasive to audiences who begin to disbelieve and question what the companies want to promote and sell. The technique of native advertising, which "employs a third party” such as media, social media, celebrities, professionals and people of high stature, has become an important tool that contributes positively to the success of a business. Sponsored articles and television shows are produced in the same way …

Review Of Training Principles For Flight Training In Aircraft Or Simulator, Stefan Kleinke Aug 2017

Review Of Training Principles For Flight Training In Aircraft Or Simulator, Stefan Kleinke

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

In human-performance-driven fields such as the social and behavioral sciences and education, there is a particular risk for a disconnect between current research and applied practice. Often, new findings require policy changes and workforce re-education before being applied in a meaningful way. Therefore, a continuous need for practitioner professional development and continuation training exists to ensure informed practices. This presentation is motivated by these needs and aims to help flight training professionals to make informed decisions when designing and conducting flight training events. Based on a conceptual framework of cognitive and behavioral theories in learning, a variety of common training …

Mental Engineering - A Significant Contribution To Resilience Engineering In Aviation, Max Scheck Aug 2017

Mental Engineering - A Significant Contribution To Resilience Engineering In Aviation, Max Scheck

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Currently, far reaching changes can be noticed at the core of human learning of complex tasks. The share of concrete learning diminishes in favor of digital and virtual learning methods, which offer enormous economical and organizational advantages – however by no means is it clear whether these changes effect solely efficiency, but also optimize the effectiveness of learning processes. These deficits surrounding manual flying skills, which can be observed globally, very clearly point towards these facts.

With the learning methods suggested here, the main aim is to reduce the above deficits, by state-of-the-art stress- reducing procedures, as well as the …

Integrated News Literacy Concepts And Skills In Teaching Mobile Journalism, Nguyet Nguyen, Phuong Hoang Aug 2017

Integrated News Literacy Concepts And Skills In Teaching Mobile Journalism, Nguyet Nguyen, Phuong Hoang

First Global News Literacy Conference

Along with the rapid development of technology infrastructure, Vietnam is witnessing a powerful transformation in media activities. One of the significant changes is the advent of a new media form named mobile journalism. Collecting news from various sources is the most difficult task for journalists writing for the emerging mobile platform. Most of the news will be easily found on social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Zalo, etc. On the one hand, journalists can take advantage of the huge volume of information which is multidimensional and has consistent, timely coverage. However, these sources of news, that often lack transparency, clarity, …

Interpretations Of Jesus And The Virgin Mary In The Quran And The Bible: A Possible Contribution To Muslim-Christian Cooperation?, Jon Armajani Aug 2017

Interpretations Of Jesus And The Virgin Mary In The Quran And The Bible: A Possible Contribution To Muslim-Christian Cooperation?, Jon Armajani

The Journal of Social Encounters

This essay explores Muslim and Christian understandings of Jesus and his mother Mary, which may provide a basis for possible cooperation between the two religious communities. The similarities and differences in views are discussed, with an understanding that there are differences in views not only between but also within the two religious communities. The essay concludes with a discussion of seven types of interreligious dialogue as articulated by Sallie B. King, and how they apply to Muslim-Christian dialogue related to Jesus and Mary.

Emerging Challenges To Long-Term Peace And Security In Mozambique, Ayokunu Adedokun Aug 2017

Emerging Challenges To Long-Term Peace And Security In Mozambique, Ayokunu Adedokun

The Journal of Social Encounters

Mozambique’s transition from civil war to peace is often considered among the most successful implementations of a peace agreement in the post-Cold War era. Following the signing of the 1992 Rome General Peace Accords (GPA), the country has not experienced any large-scale recurrence of war. Instead, Mozambique has made impressive progress in economic growth, poverty reduction, improved security, regional cooperation and post-war democratisation. Mozambique has also made significant strides in the provision of primary healthcare, and steady progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Notwithstanding these stellar achievements, Mozambique still faces a large number of political, social and economic problems: …

Interreligious Action As A Force For Peace, Shamsia Ramadhan Aug 2017

Interreligious Action As A Force For Peace, Shamsia Ramadhan

The Journal of Social Encounters

Every religion displays an inclination toward peace through its leaders and thinkers. This can be seen by the number of religious actors who have played a role in resolving conflicts in different parts of the world. Catholic religious leaders have played a leading role in mediating conflicts in Africa, Asia and Latin America. An Iman and a pastor from Nigeria inspire communities to forgive and foster co-existence. There are many other examples. Although there is evidence of religious commitment to peace, the reverse also is true (see Toft et al., 2011). While some believers innovatively use religious resources in promoting …

Fostering Cultures Of Encounter: Framing Papal Teaching On Dialogue As Multi-Track Peacebuilding, Maria Power, Christopher Hrynkow Aug 2017

Fostering Cultures Of Encounter: Framing Papal Teaching On Dialogue As Multi-Track Peacebuilding, Maria Power, Christopher Hrynkow

The Journal of Social Encounters

This article demonstrates that there is a rough parallel between (1) Diamond and McDonald’s (1996) notion of multi-track diplomacy and (2) the four levels of inter-religious dialogue identified by the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, along with two other levels discerned within papal teaching by the authors. Diamond and McDonald expanded the political science concept of dual-track diplomacy and, in the process, helped to buttress the legitimacy of peace studies discourse in that discipline. Comparably, this article seeks to introduce papal teaching on dialogue framed in terms of multi-track peacebuilding. As a result, it solidifies a latent resonance between Catholic …

We Create The Path By Walking: The Involvement Of Small Christian Communities (Sccs) In Peacebuilding In Eastern Africa, Father Joseph Healey Aug 2017

We Create The Path By Walking: The Involvement Of Small Christian Communities (Sccs) In Peacebuilding In Eastern Africa, Father Joseph Healey

The Journal of Social Encounters

Small Christian Communities (SCCs), a key pastoral priority of the Catholic Bishops in the Association of Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA), officially started in major ecclesial meetings in 1973 and 1976. The SCCs in the AMECEA region have been evolving in response to the developments in the region – they “create the path by walking” and are becoming more involved in peacebuilding activities. A recent study on the SCCs finds that there are over 180,000 SCCs in the nine countries of the AMECEA region. An estimated 45,000 SCCs are spread throughout Kenya’s 26 Catholic dioceses. This essay discusses the …

Toward An Integral Catholic Peacebuilding, Gerard Powers Aug 2017

Toward An Integral Catholic Peacebuilding, Gerard Powers

The Journal of Social Encounters

Among the many under-examined aspects of Catholic approaches to peacebuilding are its ecclesiological and practical dimensions. This article suggests that an Integral Catholic Peacebuilding calls for deepening the Catholic community’s commitment to peacebuilding as a vocation, especially by reinvigorating the lay vocation; cultivating distinctively Catholic approaches to peacebuilding while engaging inclusively, especially through strategic approaches to ecumenical and inter-religious engagement; and promoting greater integration by examining the interconnections among disparate factors and issues, and giving priority to effective collaboration among vertical and horizontal levels, and different sectors of the Catholic community

News Literacy And A Civics Model For Journalism Education, Jennifer Fleming Aug 2017

News Literacy And A Civics Model For Journalism Education, Jennifer Fleming

First Global News Literacy Conference

News literacy is a relative newcomer to media literacy education even though instruction on teaching students how to access, analyze, evaluate, and, in some cases, create news media messages has been part of media literacy research and practice for decades. What is new is the label news literacy—a label that emerged in American journalism education circles in 2006 and media literacy education communities shortly thereafter. RobbGrieco and Hobbs (2012) identify two news literacy paradigms: Global and American. Global news literacy programs encourage macro-level inquiry of news issues—issues such as ownership, ideologies, and institutions that many argue negatively influence news production …

Customizing News Literacy Course In Different Class Settings, Huyen Nguyen Aug 2017

Customizing News Literacy Course In Different Class Settings, Huyen Nguyen

First Global News Literacy Conference

One challenge for the news literacy instructor/lecture/trainer is to tailor lessons to different class settings. Fortunately, I have had opportunities to design news literacy courses for different class sizes, from small groups to big classes, and for different time durations, from a 3-‐session training course to 10-‐ week and 15-‐week courses, as well as for students of different cultures, from Vietnamese students to Chinese and American students.

In this paper, I primarily review my experience designing and teaching News Literacy courses for two 30-‐ student classes at Ohio University and University of Social Sciences and Humanities. In addition, I share …
