Social Determinants Of Health And Health Data Panel, Carol Gilbert, Athena Ramos, Tom Rauner, David J. Drozd

CPAR Presents: A Data and Research Series for Community Impact

A newer and expanding area of research is how socio-economic characteristics like income and education levels influence health outcomes. It has been said that your zip code is more important to your well-being than your genetic code. Local and national studies have shown correlations between higher poverty leading to lower life expectancy. Hear a panel of experts describe the health data of interest and how Census data tie into this important field of study.

A Preliminary Comparison Of Pilots' Weather Minimums And Actual Decision-Making, Nathan W. Walters, Mattie Milner, Daniel A. Marte, Evan A. Adkins, Marie Aidonidis, Matt B. Pierce, Abigail K. Pasmore, Angela Roccasecca, Stephen Rice, Scott R. Winter Aug 2017

A Preliminary Comparison Of Pilots' Weather Minimums And Actual Decision-Making, Nathan W. Walters, Mattie Milner, Daniel A. Marte, Evan A. Adkins, Marie Aidonidis, Matt B. Pierce, Abigail K. Pasmore, Angela Roccasecca, Stephen Rice, Scott R. Winter

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Adverse weather conditions remain a leading contributing factor in general aviation accidents. In compromising situations, such as severe weather, pilots continue to make decisions, which endanger themselves, passengers, and the aircraft. Although technology and training have lowered the risks associated with poor decision making by aviators, they are often still faced with scenarios requiring split second judgments. A countermeasure to these risks is the use of personal weather minimums by pilots. The purpose of this study was to examine pilot’s decision-making and performance, while flying an instrument approach, under extreme conditions of low visibility and ceiling as based on their …

Taking Stock: Organizing Open Access Operations Based On Researcher Practices, Andrea A. Wirth

Library Faculty Research

In 2017, the members of the Scholarly Communication Initiatives (SCI) Department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) developed a strategic goal for the department to “create organizational shift” at UNLV in regard to improving campus-wide knowledge of and support for open access (OA). One method by which to work toward this multi-year goal was to gain additional insight about UNLV faculty members’ support of OA by assessing their participation in OA publishing and repositories. Through direct conversations with faculty, information gleaned through liaison librarians, and questions about the IR and related services, it was clear there was already …

Endogeneity In Panel Stochastic Frontier Models: An Application To The Japanese Cotton Spinning Industry, Mustafa U. Karakaplan, Levent Kutlu

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

We present a panel stochastic frontier model that handles the endogeneity problem. This model can treat the endogeneity of both frontier and inefficiency variables. We apply our method to examine the technical efficiency of Japanese cotton spinning industry. Our results indicate that market concentration is endogenous, and when its endogeneity is properly handled, it has a larger negative impact on the technical efficiency of cotton spinning plants. We find that the exogenous model substantially overestimates efficiency in concentrated markets.

Failure As Process: Interrogating Disaster, Loss, And Recovery In Digital Preservation, Carly Dearborn, Sam Meister Aug 2017

Failure As Process: Interrogating Disaster, Loss, And Recovery In Digital Preservation, Carly Dearborn, Sam Meister

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Disaster, loss, and failure preoccupy the minds of many digital preservation professionals and yet, despite the prominence of digital disaster planning guidelines which seem to anticipate failure, there is limited discussion of experience with preservation system or network failures, which are often framed as inevitable in digital preservation. Despite this framing, negative perceptions of failure influence the digital preservation discourse by associating failure with poor planning, unreliability, and untrustworthiness on the part of institutions. This article will interrogate the issue of failure within the digital preservation field and consider the need for more conversations around network failure and recovery. The …

Sexting And Young People: A Review Of The Qualitative Literature, Andrea Anastassiou Aug 2017

Sexting And Young People: A Review Of The Qualitative Literature, Andrea Anastassiou

The Qualitative Report

The term “sexting” refers to the sending and receiving of sexually explicit imagery via some form of virtual messaging. Although sexting is by no means restricted to young people, it is the participation of young people and its effect on their well-being that have led to widespread concern from parents, educators, and the media alike. Ringrose, Gill, Livingstone, and Harvey (2012) argued that this “media panic” exists in response to a predominantly adult discourse with little input from the teenagers and young people who engage in sexting. As such, this paper will review the small but emerging field of qualitative …

Creating A Culture Of Research Reputation Through Research Information Management Systems, Scott Warren, Anne E. Rauh Aug 2017

Creating A Culture Of Research Reputation Through Research Information Management Systems, Scott Warren, Anne E. Rauh

Librarian Publications

Research institutions have increasingly strong needs to manage the reputations of their research portfolios. From primary investigators, to awarded grants, scholarly output and related media mention, universities need to be able to retrieve and integrate information about their research endeavors in order to successfully showcase impact at an institutional level. However, all too often this information is siloed and not easily discoverable, retrievable, or reusable. Syracuse University Libraries traditionally provide research reputation services to individual researchers, but recently collaborated with the Office of Research to expand this work in a systematic, scalable manner throughout the university via a pilot implementation …

Status, Revisionism, And Great Power Strategy : Us-China Positional Competition And The Struggle For Leadership In Asia-Pacific, John Hugo Simon Åberg Aug 2017

Status, Revisionism, And Great Power Strategy : Us-China Positional Competition And The Struggle For Leadership In Asia-Pacific, John Hugo Simon Åberg

Lingnan Theses

The dissertation addresses the core IR problem of revisionism and relates it to both the declining superpower and the rising great power, both the United States and China. The dissertation also offers a novel conceptualization of international order in terms of which revisionism is understood. The theoretical innovation of the dissertation modifies established structural realist theories and shifts the explanatory focus from security to status. Since status, defined as social position, is composed of both power and prestige, both change in the balance of power and the balance of prestige explain revisionism, which then cause dissatisfaction in the form of …

Facilitating The Transition From Military Instructor To Academic Educator: Cognitive Apprenticeship In Teacher Induction At The United States Air Force Academy, Thomas T. Swaim Aug 2017

Facilitating The Transition From Military Instructor To Academic Educator: Cognitive Apprenticeship In Teacher Induction At The United States Air Force Academy, Thomas T. Swaim

The Qualitative Report

This article examines teacher induction in the military undergraduate education context. The U.S. Air Force Academy relies on approximately 520 military and civilian instructors to educate nearly 4000 future military officers each year. These educators must be highly skilled and unquestionably capable in their abilities to teach these future leaders. Many of these instructors derive from highly technical active duty operational career fields (such as pilot, missile operator, etc.). This article reveals how Collins’, Brown’s, and Newman’s (1989) theory of cognitive apprenticeship is manifested within teacher induction experiences at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Using a qualitative multiple-case study approach, …

Between Paradigms: Becoming A Pathological Optimist, Carol Isaac Aug 2017

Between Paradigms: Becoming A Pathological Optimist, Carol Isaac

The Qualitative Report

Using an autoethnographic poststructural lens, I examined my academic journey in becoming a qualitative methodologist. I integrated my mentor’s maxims such as, “the institution will not love you back,” “prisoner of your words,” “make plans; if they don’t work, make new plans,” “one has mentors and tormentors and both help shape us,” “ever the opportunist,” “strategic groveling,” “a mosaic approach to mentoring” and “just get naked.” Despite paradigmatic contradictions between my doctoral and postdoctoral experiences, I gained much from working between the polarities of the social science and biomedical discourse. In time, I became a “pathological optimist,” one of the …

Improvising Close Relationships: A Relational Perspective On Vulnerability, Nicholas Riggs Aug 2017

Improvising Close Relationships: A Relational Perspective On Vulnerability, Nicholas Riggs

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I study the way couples improvise relationships together. I define improvisation as a kind of performance that leads to an interpretive practice where people develop the meanings of their relationships as they perform. Participating in a performance ethnography, my romantic partner, myself, and three other couples reflect on the way we perform together on stage. Adapting the popular improv performance format “Armando” and utilizing post-performance focus groups, I observe how the couples strive to make meaning together and negotiate a joint-perspective about how they played. Ultimately, I argue that attending to the way a couple improvises their …

Flight Instructor Professionalism, Kenneth P. Byrnes Ph.D. Aug 2017

Flight Instructor Professionalism, Kenneth P. Byrnes Ph.D.

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

The inherent risk associated with aviation demands a high level of professionalism among aviation employees to ensure safety. Professionalism consists of factors such as technical competence, personal competence, neatness and attractiveness of dress, and personal conduct. Many of these factors are able to be taught, measured, or judged. However, conduct is an intangible quality that is not easily taught or quantified. As such, the professional behavior of aviation personnel is difficult for the FAA to mandate and regulate. An individual’s conduct is a learned behavior that originates through culture, role models, and experience. In aviation, conduct is instilled during the …

Understanding Generation: Implications For Flight Training, Hiring, And Retention, Kristine M. Kiernan Ph.D.

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Generation is a much discussed topic in the literature on workforce training and education. The simultaneous presence of numerous generations in the workforce has created tensions, challenges, and opportunities. In collegiate flight training, the Millennial generation is giving way to the post-Millennial generation, which will bring its own learning style and priorities to the cockpit. This presentation reviews the scientific literature on generational differences, identifying which differences are actually supported by data. Demographic and economic trends, including data from the National Science Foundation’s Scientists and Engineers Statistical Data System, will be combined with demonstrated generational differences in work-related attitudes and …

Recipe For Success: Behavioral Ingredients For Superior Performing Leaders, Linda M. Pittenger Aug 2017

Recipe For Success: Behavioral Ingredients For Superior Performing Leaders, Linda M. Pittenger

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

The aviation and aerospace business is a complex adaptive system that includes emerging technologies, competitors, government policies, cost demands, globalization, and talent constraints. To effectively lead in the chaos of constant demands and disruptive and unpredictable external environments, having deep and broad functional expertise is not enough. Superior performing leaders require further broadening and deepening of selected behavioral competencies in order to succeed (Smith, 2000). Particular to aviation and aerospace, understanding the types of leaders needed to be successful is especially important since baby boomer employees will soon retire and the middle managers that will likely replace them lack the …

High Intimate Partner Violence Rates Among Latinas In Bushwick: A Literature Review, Daisy Lopez Aug 2017

High Intimate Partner Violence Rates Among Latinas In Bushwick: A Literature Review, Daisy Lopez

21st Century Social Justice

Although intimate violence partner rates have declined over the past decade, this health and social problem remains serious and significant. Latinas are especially impacted, as they face greater negative outcomes from intimate partner violence experiences. Research increasingly highlights the need to incorporate the unique narratives of racial and ethnic populations into education and intervention measures. Unfortunately, current strategies often neglect the social and cultural context of this population group. The influence of this vulnerability is especially evident in locations experiencing increasing violence rates such as Bushwick in northern Brooklyn of New York City. The present paper examines these vulnerabilities and …

Restorative Justice: A Look At Victim Offender Mediation Programs, Katie L. Moran Aug 2017

Restorative Justice: A Look At Victim Offender Mediation Programs, Katie L. Moran

21st Century Social Justice

This report conceptualizes the effectiveness and benefits of utilizing the restorative justice model of Victim Offender Mediation (VOM) within the criminal and juvenile justice systems to serve the rights of victims, offenders, and society more justly. Victim Offender Mediation is discussed as a possible alternative justice model which reframes the victim-offender relationship to foster and respect the dignity and worth of each participant. This restorative justice model combats victims’ feelings of helplessness by giving them back their voice, while having the potential to specifically offer relief to those secondarily victimized by the legal system in cases of simple rape. Offenders …

Book Review: Saving Capitalism: For The Many, Not The Few, Scott C. Taylor Aug 2017

Book Review: Saving Capitalism: For The Many, Not The Few, Scott C. Taylor

21st Century Social Justice

In his most recent book, Saving Capitalism: For the Many, Not the Few, economist and former Secretary of Labor, Robert Reich enters the debate on our failing American economy by disrupting the prevailing view that the free market is natural. Contesting the very notion of deregulation, Reich describes how governments create markets. In this book review, I emphasize how Reich’s book can give perspective to social workers’ understanding of the markets in which they work in. Advocating for the same human rights and social justice outlined in the social worker’s Code of Ethics, Reich provides illuminating criticism of our …
