Tackling The Health Gap: The Role Of Psychosocial Processes, Nancy E. Adler, Jacinth J. X. Tan
Tackling The Health Gap: The Role Of Psychosocial Processes, Nancy E. Adler, Jacinth J. X. Tan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In The Health Gap, Michael Marmot describes how, starting even before birth, social conditions set individuals on trajectories that eventuate in inequities in health and longevity. In addition to race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status linked to income and education plays a major role in determining health trajectories. The effects emerge not only at the very bottom of the socioeconomic spectrum, but across the whole range.1 The fact that health effects persist at levels where resources are more than adequate to fulfill material needs suggests that the health gap is not due only to material privation associated with poverty, but also …

Unsupervised Load Shape Clustering For Urban Building Performance Assessment, Jimeno A. Fonseca, Clayton Miller, Arno Schlueter
Unsupervised Load Shape Clustering For Urban Building Performance Assessment, Jimeno A. Fonseca, Clayton Miller, Arno Schlueter
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This paper presents a method to automatically cluster typical days of energy consumption in one or several buildings. The method is based on an optimized version of the Symbolic Aggregate approXimation (SAX) method. SAX is a data mining technique for clustering time series with recent applications in building fault detection and building performance assessment. The number of clusters and accuracy of SAX highly depends on two highly sensitive input variables, i.e., the word size and the alphabet size. We propose the use of the genetic algorithm NSGA-II to optimize the number of words and alphabet size of SAX subjected to …
Spiritual Gifts, Pastoring, And Gender: An Ongoing Dialogue, Boubakar Sanou
Spiritual Gifts, Pastoring, And Gender: An Ongoing Dialogue, Boubakar Sanou
Journal of Applied Christian Leadership
"in Joel 2:28-29, god promises an innovation regarding how he will make his Spirit available in the last days ... god promises to give his Spirit and gifts without discrimination to both genders (“your sons and daughters,” and “both men and women”), young and old, from all walks of life, races, and social strata. in Acts 2:16-21, the apostle Peter quotes Joel 2:28-32 to assert that the equal filling of the Spirit for the 120 disciples (among whom were women, cf. Acts 1:14) was an element of the fulfillment of god’s promise through the prophet Joel. he also points out …

Preliminary Study Of Color Removal From Moh Hom Dyeing Wastewater Using A Low Cost Activated Carbon Derived From Pineapple Waste, Nittaya Pasukphun, Yanasinee Suma
Applied Environmental Research
In Northern Thailand, the folk dress of the culture can still be seen in everyday use, properly called "Moh Hom". The production of Moh Hom is undertaken by small-meduim enterprises (SMEs), which are not subject to regulation to control environmental management. The Moh Hom fabric dyeing produces blue-colored wastewater which is typically discharged untreated into natural waterways, causing water pollution. Activated carbon adsorption offers an interesting option for on-site wastewater treatment for colour removal. Pineapple waste is a widely-available and free source of activated carbon in Chiang Rai Province, Northern Thailand. The current study examined the adsorption characteristics of pineapple …

Romney, Obama, And The 47%: Gaffes And Representative Anecdotes In The 2012 Presidential Campaign, Calvin Coker
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
This article uses the vocabulary provided by scholarship on gaffes, narrative paradigm, and representative anecdote to suggest that both the Obama and Romney campaigns employed Mitt Romney’s leaked “47%” comment as a Burkean representative anecdote in the 2012 election. The elevation of the leaked comment was possible because the gaffe held narrative fidelity for the stories proposed by both campaigns, but narrative coherence and transcendent values became contentious aspects of the respective narratives. Critically analyzing divergent meanings assigned to the leaked comment opens space to discuss the role gaffes play in campaign narratives, complicates contemporary understanding of gaffes and their …

Reactions To The Privilege Walk: An Exploratory Study, Gloria Jean Magana
Reactions To The Privilege Walk: An Exploratory Study, Gloria Jean Magana
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Those who hold multiple disadvantaged identities (i.e., women of color) are subject to inequalities that are not experienced by those who harbor privileged identities. Those with multi-disadvantaged identities have additive disadvantages due to holding multiple subordinate identities and as a result face many barriers. It is critical to recognize these differences in society by raising awareness of privilege. Previous studies have targeted privilege awareness, but have inconsistent findings. However, methods that incorporated experiential learning have shown promising results; an intervention that integrates experiential learning to target privilege may be effective in raising privilege awareness. The Privilege Walk exercise is an …

Losing Control: The Consequences Of Individual- And Group-Based Social Exclusion On Latina Women’S Self-Regulation Of Unhealthy Eating, Dorris Kamiya Stewart
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Social exclusion is a psychologically stressful experience that impairs people’s ability to control specific behaviors or events. In the current study, I attempted to reconcile competing predictions regarding whether exclusion is especially harmful to control, or self-regulate, when it is attributed to individual- or group-based characteristics of a person. Per the self-evaluation maintenance (SEM) model, social exclusion should be most detrimental to self-regulation when it is directed at a person’s unique traits, or individual self. In contrast, social identity theory (SIT) predicts that exclusion is especially damaging when it is directed at a person’s group membership. I examined whether …

Preliminary Feasibility Of Using Natural Wetland For University Wastewater Treatment: A Case Study, Nittaya Pasukphun, Yanasinee Suma, Vivat Keawdunglek, Pussadee Laor, Anuttara Hongtong
Applied Environmental Research
Wetlands contribute to water quality improvement and play an important role in the global carbon cycle. As such, wetlands can sequester carbon and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. This study utilized a survey as a preliminary investigation of the feasibility of using natural wetlands for university wastewater treatment. A total of 13 natural ponds containing water from rainfall and some discharge from the Rotating Batch Contractor (RBC) in Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) were selected. Of all the 13 ponds, the pond at the stadium was selected as the most suitable, due to the following physical and chemical parameters: slope was < 5%, maximum depth was 3.1 m, mean temperature of 24.5 °C, dissolved oxygen 6.31 mg L-1, pH 7.56, TDS 180 ppt, electrical conductivity 253 µS cm-1, and containing 2.35 % organic matter. Total cost and carbon emissions were compared between RBC and the proposed natural wetland. Construction, operation and maintenance costs of natural wetland were very low compared with RBC due to no chemical, electricity and skilled staff required. Similarly, the lower electrical consumption of the natural wetland resulted in reduced carbon emissions of 102.9 kg CO2eq per year. This preliminary result can be used to select possible options for university wastewater treatment.

Formaldehyde vapor released from cadavers during dissection practice can adversely affect students and instructors in gross anatomy laboratories. Therefore, this study investigated formaldehyde concentrations in a gross anatomy laboratory of Mahasarakham University, Thailand. Area-based sampling was conducted for three scenarios: (1) a laboratory cleaning period, (2) three periods of teaching classes and (3) a non-teaching class period. Personal samples were also collected for five consecutive working days from two anatomy lab instructors and a non-lab instructor. Measurements were conducted during May to October 2016 using cartridges filled …
Virtue, Positive Psychology, And Religion: Consideration Of An Overarching Virtue And An Underpinning Mechanism, Lindsey M. Root Luna, Daryl R. Vantongeren, Charlotte Witvliet
Virtue, Positive Psychology, And Religion: Consideration Of An Overarching Virtue And An Underpinning Mechanism, Lindsey M. Root Luna, Daryl R. Vantongeren, Charlotte Witvliet
Faculty Scholarship
The virtues are a central focus of research at the intersection of positive psychology and the psychology of religion and spirituality. Humility, patience, and gratitude are addressed in the target articles of this special issue. Beyond examining each individual virtue, we argue here that the connections among virtues also warrant empirical attention. Specifically, we explain the unity of the virtues thesis, which suggests that individual virtues may be a part of a larger overarching construct, which we propose may be practical wisdom, or simply general virtuousness. Similarly, we propose that a common mechanism, such as automatic self-regulation, may facilitate these …
Parental Influence On Second Generation Chinese-American Youth’S Career Choice And Development, Yingli Huang
Parental Influence On Second Generation Chinese-American Youth’S Career Choice And Development, Yingli Huang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
A large body of literature supports the claim that the role of parents in shaping Asian-American youth's career development is significant (Leong & Serafica, 1995; Leong & Hardin, 2002; Yuan, 2012; Sandhu, 2017; Qin, 2011). When considering the family impact on Asian-Americans’ vocational choices, researchers should examine the phenomena through culturally specific lens so that variables that are more cultural relevant are captured. This is a pilot study with the goal to provide a preliminary understanding of the ways in which first-generation Chinese immigrant parents influence the choice and development of a career to their second-generation young adult children. In …
Introducing International Relations: Placing “Disability”, Art Blaser
Introducing International Relations: Placing “Disability”, Art Blaser
Political Science Faculty Articles and Research
I base this paper primarily on my teaching of introductory international relations since 1979. Introductory international relations instructors need to give disability issues more attention. First, I look at participants in international relations: states and their leaders; global governance—particularly the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; and transnational actors-particularly Disabled Peoples’ Organizations (DPOs). I then examine issues: rights, war and peace, and development. Second, I examine two approaches from the disability studies literature: disability as a deficit demographic category (based on a medical model), and disability as the basis for a social movement (based on a social model). …

Trends In The Environmental Health Job Market For New Graduates, Jason W. Marion, Timothy J. Murphy Phd, Anne Marie Zimeri Phd
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
The question of whether the job market can support future graduates of environmental health programs remains an important and difficult question for environmental health programs, current and prospective students, parents, and other stakeholders. Our previous report using 2014 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics demonstrated anticipated growth and higher than average pay in the profession through at least 2022 for baccalaureate degree holders (Marion & Sinde, 2015). Growth in the profession does not necessarily translate into job availability if the market is saturated with job candidates. While university programs produce graduates, local health departments (LHDs) have suffered tremendous …

Caregiver Criticism, Help-Giving And The Burden Of Schizophrenia Among Mexican American Families, Bianca T. Villalobos, Jodie Ullman, Tracy Wang Krick, Darcy Alcántara, Alex Kopelowicz, Steven R. Lopez
Psychological Science Faculty Publications
Objectives—The present study tested an attribution model of help-giving in family caregivers of persons with schizophrenia as it relates to caregivers’ reported burden. We hypothesized (a) that caregivers’ attributions of their ill relatives’ responsibility for their symptoms would be associated with more negative and less positive affective reactions, (b) that affective reactions would be related to perceptions of administered support, and (c) that support would in turn predict greater burden.
Methods—We examined 60 family caregivers of Mexican origin living in Southern California. Mexican Americans were chosen because of their high degree of contact with their ill relative thereby …

Gender And Connections Among Wall Street Analysts, Lily Hua Fang, Sterling Huang
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
We examine how alumni ties with corporate boards differentially affect male and female analysts’ job performance and career outcomes. Connection improves men’s job performance — forecasting accuracy and recommendation impact — significantly more than women’s. Controlling for performance, connection further contributes to men’s, but not women’s, likelihood of being voted by institutional investors as “star” analysts, a marker of career success. These asymmetric effects are stronger in more opaque firms and among younger analysts, but is absent from a placebo test. Our evidence indicates that men reap higher benefits from social networks than women in both job performance and subjective …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Scholarly research generally finds that democratic governments are more likely to respect human rights than other types of regimes. Different human rights practices among long-standing and affluent democracies therefore present a puzzle. Drawing from democratic theory and comparative institutional studies, we argue more inclusive or "popular" democracies should enforce human rights better than more exclusive or "elite" democracies, even in the face of security threats from armed conflict. Instead of relying on the Freedom House or Polity indexes to distinguish levels of democracy, we adopt a more focused approach to measuring structures of inclusion, the Institutional Democracy Index (IDI), which …
