Dividing Germany, Accepting An Invitation To Empire: The Life, Death, And Historical Significance Of George Kennan's "Program A", John Gleb
Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union
This paper will attempt to reinterpret the early Cold War moment in Euro-American relations that gave rise to and ultimately destroyed George Kennan’s plan to reunify and neutralize Germany—the so-called “Program A” of 1948–49. Kennan envisioned his Program as the first and decisive step towards creating a “free European community” capable of acting as a non-aligned “third force,” thus ending the Cold War on the Continent. But before it could be presented to the United States’ European allies, Britain and France, some of the plan’s principal features were leaked to the New York Times. These features, as described in …
Trade Union Trade-Offs: Unions, Voters, And The Rise Of Right-Wing Populism, Kim Gabbitas
Trade Union Trade-Offs: Unions, Voters, And The Rise Of Right-Wing Populism, Kim Gabbitas
Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union
Trade union membership in European Union member states has been in decline for decades, which has many concerned about the future of workers’ rights. While existing work examines the reasons for this decline, my research shifts the focus from union density to the functions unions serve and how these functions affect and are affected by changing electoral behavior. I examine the rise of right-wing populist movements in Europe and how these movements and the challenges today’s labor unions face can be traced to the same underlying forces. I argue that, as the relevance of trade unions declines for blue-collar workers, …
Integration Policy And Outcomes For The Russian-Speaking Minority In Estonia, Silviu Kondan, Mridvika Sahajpal
Integration Policy And Outcomes For The Russian-Speaking Minority In Estonia, Silviu Kondan, Mridvika Sahajpal
Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union
Estonia’s integration policy vis-à-vis its Russian-speaking residents was developed and reformed several times since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. While comparative data from the international community certainly indicates that Estonia has progressed in the realm of social, political and societal integration, the ‘success’ for each individual policy is now increasingly measured—and contested— within broader considerations of geopolitical security and minority rights. The authors converge interview-based data compiled from various representatives and scholars of nongovernmental organizations, government agencies, and think tanks with secondary research on the topic of Russian minority integration in Estonia. The report will seek to …

The Cultural Politics Of Eurovision: A Case Study Of Ukraine’S Invasion In 2014 Against Their Eurovision Win In 2016, Jordana L. Cashman
Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union
Politics is officially banned from Eurovision, and songs that are too political can be prevented from being performed. However, the complete separation of culture and politics is impossible, and cultural performances often carry both indirect and explicit political messages. Eurovision is no exception. Established in 1956, the cultural-political goal of the contest was to unite European countries after the devastation of WWII, and it is one of the hallmarks of the cultural and political integration Europe has pursued since the founding of the European Coal and Steel Community in 1951. Now, since contestants are based on members of the European …

Evaluating The Treatment Of The Roma Population Within The Eu, Rachel V. Ng
Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union
This paper will address citizenship within the European Union with a focus on the Roma and their treatment as citizens of different member states. Using the European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights as a guideline, member states will be evaluated on their adherence to the listed rights in regards to the Roma. This paper will address different areas including education, housing, and economic opportunity within the individual member states and will identify both their successes and failures at integrating the Roma into the population. Member states. Finally, this paper will determine if Roma are treated equally in comparison to the …

The Evolution Of The European Union's Asylum Policy Through The 2015 Migrant Crisis, Roshni J. Sopariwalla
The Evolution Of The European Union's Asylum Policy Through The 2015 Migrant Crisis, Roshni J. Sopariwalla
Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union
Since 2015, an unexpected number of migrants have rushed to the European Union in hopes of improving their lives. Contrary to their expectations, asylum-seekers realized that the EU is neither prepared nor willing to host them. This paper follows the progression of the EU’s asylum policies, beginning with the 1951 Geneva Convention and the principle of non-refoulement. After establishing the criteria necessary for a migrant to be legally recognized as a refugee, the paper will look at how the EU evaluates individual applications for asylum. Through the lens of the 2015 Migrant Crisis, this paper highlights the shortcomings of the …

The Third Law Of Uk Nuclear Policy: For Every Protestation There Is An Equal And Opposite Affirmation, Lauren Vidler, Hannah Pugh
Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union
Despite consecutive UK governments’ continual support for and renewal of the nuclear program, the UK’s nuclear arsenal has remained a contentious issue on the basis of both ethical framework and the cyclical costs of acquiring new nuclear weapons during a climate of austerity. Given the political turmoil currently faced post-Brexit, and amidst a potential upset in the global axis of power, with its inherent implications for national security, the question of the UK’s nuclear program is of critical importance. This policy paper provides an expository overview of the major points of contention in the UK nuclear policy debate namely; financial, …

Toward A Non-Nuclear World: The Npt Regime – Nuclear Disarmament And The Challenge Of A Wmdfz In The Middle East, Sameh Aboul-Enein
International Journal of Nuclear Security
This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of various approaches for nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation with the intention of determining how best to promote a Weapons of Mass Destruction Free Zone in the Middle East (MEWMDFZ). Using a qualitative approach, I investigate historical cases of agreements regarding nonproliferation zones and examine the causes for deadlock through both a perusal of historic successes and failures and a review of relevant literature. Particular focus is given to the failure of the NPT Review Conference of 2015. Furthermore, I discuss the importance of role-play simulations and their indications of the need for …

When studying population change in Nebraska during the 2000s decade, it is clear that county level changes were far from uniform. While the state increased by about 115,000 people, only 24 of the state’s 93 counties experienced a population gain. Nearly 75% of Nebraska’s counties had a population decline during the decade, one of the largest such percentages of counties among all states in the Midwest and Great Plains areas of the United States. In fact, population gains were concentrated in Nebraska’s most populated “Big 3” counties of Douglas, Lancaster, and Sarpy, which increased by nearly 125,000 people, while the …

A Modified Normalized Difference Impervious Surface Index (Mndisi) For Automatic Urban Mapping From Landsat Imagery, Zhongchang Sun, Cuizhen Wang, Huadong Guo, Ranran Shang
Faculty Publications
Impervious surface area (ISA) is a key factor for monitoring urban environment and land development. Automatic mapping of impervious surfaces has attracted growing attention in recent years. Spectral built-up indices are considered promising to map ISA distributions due to their easy, parameter-free implementations. This study explores the potentials of impervious surface indices for ISA mapping from Landsat imagery using a case study area in Boston, USA. A modified normalized difference impervious surface index (MNDISI) is proposed, and a Gaussian-based automatic threshold selection method is used to identify the optimal MNDISI threshold for delineating impervious surfaces from background features. To evaluate …

Partners In Mission: A Critical Examination Of The Library As A Locus For Social Justice, Jennifer Nutefall, Jackie Kremer
University Libraries Publications
The mission of Jesuit education to promote social justice is clear. Yet, when we look at the work of our Jesuit institutions’ academic libraries do we see a clear directive to support social justice initiatives? Our research explores with a critical lens the impact academic libraries have, on their own and in collaboration with campus partners, in promoting social justice at their institutions.

Most discussions and analyses with regard to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor(CPEC) have a Pakistan-driven perspective, and rightly so. After all, we have to safeguard our national interests and ensure maximum benefits for the country. These discussions and writings have evoked a lot of interest in China. This article attempts to present a limited cross section of the views articulated by Chinese scholars, academics, companies engaged in CPEC, retired officials and other friends of Pakistan. My past association with China as the region’s chief economist for the World Bank as well as visits to China practically every year since then has …

Conceptualizing Justice: Police Responses To Sex Crimes In Partnership With Canadian Police Departments, Keyanna Drakes
MA Research Paper
Justice exists in and through interpretations of past laws and legal procedures. Justice for sex crimes, however, is particularly complex due to the differences between victim needs and the operations of the criminal justice system. This study, using 70 semi-structured interviews and 2 focus groups from Canadian police departments, shows procedural and distributive justice as the two most prevalent forms of justice police officers use when dealing with sex crimes. The commonalities between the two forms of justice support the notion that police officers have adapted to using multiple methods of justice that are more compassionate to victims of sexual …
Racism, Oligarchy And Contentious Politics In Bermuda, Andrea Dean
Racism, Oligarchy And Contentious Politics In Bermuda, Andrea Dean
MA Research Paper
In 1959, ‘blacks’ in Bermuda boycotted the island’s movie theatres and held nightly protests over segregated seating practices. By all accounts the 1959 Theatre Boycott was one of the most significant episodes of contentious politics in contemporary Bermuda, challenging social norms that had been in existence for 350 years. While the trajectory and outcomes of ‘black’ Bermudians’ transgressive social protests could not have been predicted, this analysis uses racism, oligarchy and contentious politics as conceptual tools to illuminate the social mechanisms and processes that eventually led to the end of formal racial segregation in Bermuda after less than three weeks …

Influence Of The Presidential Inaugural Address On Audience Perceptions Of Candidate Image And The State Of The Nation, Kyle Alexander Rush
Dissertations and Theses
This study asks whether and how the presidential inaugural address influences American audiences. The current study explores how the 2017 Presidential Inaugural Address of Donald Trump influences audiences. Two areas were studied: Candidate image and the state of the nation. I hypothesized that participants who watched the address would have different attitudes regarding candidate image and the state of the nation compared to non-viewers. I also hypothesized that viewers of the address who voted for Donald Trump would respond differently to candidate image and the state of the nation when compared with those who did not vote for Trump.
