Who Actually Benefits From Changes In Legal Standards? Evidence From Water Disputes In 19th Century California?, Mark Kanazawa
Who Actually Benefits From Changes In Legal Standards? Evidence From Water Disputes In 19th Century California?, Mark Kanazawa
Department of Economics Working Paper Series
This paper attempts to answer a fundamental question about the effect of a change in a legal standard on the parties to a dispute: How do we know who is benefited by a change in a legal standard? The answer to this question may seem obvious, particularly if you state it concretely: Who will benefit from a change in a legal standard that is more likely to find drivers at fault in automobile-pedestrian collisions? 1 Surely the answer is pedestrians. Stated more generally, how do we know that a rule change that seems to benefit a class of parties to …
Islamic Moral Values And End-Of-Life Care: Examining The Intersection Of Religious Beliefs And The U.S. Health Care System, Cortney Hughes Rinker, Oliver Pelland, Serena Abdallah
Islamic Moral Values And End-Of-Life Care: Examining The Intersection Of Religious Beliefs And The U.S. Health Care System, Cortney Hughes Rinker, Oliver Pelland, Serena Abdallah
Southern Anthropologist
End-of-life care is a central aspect of health care in the United States. Given the country’s diverse population, it is crucial to understand different religious perspectives on policies, standards of care, and medical practices. Religious beliefs impact the ways that end-of-life care is perceived and administered to patients of different faiths. This article examines Islamic approaches to end-of-life care within the context of the US health care system. Drawing on data collected through a literature review and interviews with Muslim physicians, imams, and scholars with extensive knowledge of Islam, four areas are identified in which end-of-life recommendations in the US …

People, Places And Transport: St. Paul’S Parish Then And Now, Kimberly Pyszka, Maureen Hays
Southern Anthropologist
As archaeologists we study change through time. Certain themes, however, timeless. One such theme is how relationships and communities are formed when people gather together. In her book, St. Paul’s Parish, Jennifer Gilliland (2012) provides an historical overview of twentieth century St. Paul’s Parish, South Carolina, focusing on four themes: 1) Agriculture and Industry, 2) Gathering Places, 3) Trains, Planes, and Automobiles, and 4) Parish People. In this essay, we apply archaeological methods in St. Paul’s Parish on a property known today as Dixie Plantation to argue that these themes were as critical in the parish’s development during the …
Facebook Realness: Exploring Online Authenticity Through Drag Queens And The Infamous ‘Real Name Policy’, Ray Leblanc
Facebook Realness: Exploring Online Authenticity Through Drag Queens And The Infamous ‘Real Name Policy’, Ray Leblanc
Southern Anthropologist
Winner: 2015 Graduate Student Paper Competition
Early September 2014, Facebook profiles of popular drag queens on the West Coast were suspended for violating the rule of authenticity. Facebook profiles are designed to represent “real” people, and a battle began between corporate identity politics and the obnoxiously contradicting, subversive identities of drag performance. Drawing upon my own ethnographic work on drag performance and the social media of drag performers, I present this event as an opportunity to explore how drag queens bring their protest into cyberspace. Drag queens are disruptive cyborgs whose queer identity both on a digital and physical stage, …

Acquiring The Tools Of Grand Strategy: The Us Navy's Lcs As A Case Study, Sean P. Murphy
Acquiring The Tools Of Grand Strategy: The Us Navy's Lcs As A Case Study, Sean P. Murphy
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
Grand strategy is about how states allocate resources and employ these resources to achieve desired political conditions. In examining the match between desired ends and available ways and means, an often-overlooked subject is how the specific tools of grand strategy are forged. One of these tools is the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), a Major Defense Acquisition Program (MDAP) that started in 2000. LCS remains a controversial and often unpopular program with many stakeholders to this day. This study examines how the means of grand strategy, in this case a new ship class, are acquired. It also looks at how these …

Older Adults’ Experience In Owning A Guide Dog, Jeffrey Kou, Yvonne Lam, Patricia Lyons, Susan Nguyen
Student Research Posters
Low vision is an age-related condition that affects many older adults, and may create challenges in everyday activities in older adults. Guide dogs have been shown to be an effective assistive device that can help older adults within their community. Despite vast research on dog companionship, there is limited research on the facilitators and barriers of owning a guide dog among older adults with low vision. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study is to explore the facilitators and barriers of owning a guide dog as experienced by older adults with low vision participating in Guide Dogs for the Blind …
Genocide Studies And Corporate Social Responsibility: The Contemporary Case Of The French National Railways (Sncf), Sarah Federman
Genocide Studies And Corporate Social Responsibility: The Contemporary Case Of The French National Railways (Sncf), Sarah Federman
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Genocide studies considers the accountability various of perpetrators, as well as the needs mass atrocity creates. The inclusion of market actors, however, remains marginalized. This article considers factors perpetuating this marginalization and its costs, arguing for greater inclusion of market actors in genocide-related discussions. Relegating the importance of these actors makes the field, not their role, tangential. To examine this intersection of business and genocide, this article introduces a contemporary conflict involving the United States and France over the French National Railways (SNCF) and its role in the transport of deportees towards death camps during World War II. The lengthy, …

Wolves (Canis lupus) and moose (Alces americanus) have been studied since 1958 on 540-squarekilometer Isle Royale National Park, in Lake Superior. Wolves arrived there across the ice around 1949, and the population once increased to about 50, averaging about 25 annually (Mech 1966, Jordan et al. 1967, Vucetich and Peterson 2009). However, for various reasons, wolf numbers there have now dwindled to 2 nonbreeders, and the US National Park Service has proposed reintroducing 20–30 wolves over 3 years (National Park Service 2016). This situation offers an unparalleled opportunity to promote science-based management of this unique national park. …

Who Can Deviate From The Party Line? Political Ideology Moderates Evaluation Of Incongruent Policy Positions In Insula And Anterior Cingulate Cortex, Ingrid J. Haas, Melissa N. Baker, Frank J. Gonzalez
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
Political polarization at the elite level is a major concern in many contemporary democracies, which is argued to alienate large swaths of the electorate and prevent meaningful social change from occurring, yet little is known about how individuals respond to political candidates who deviate from the party line and express policy positions incongruent with their party affiliations. This experiment examines the neural underpinnings of such evaluations using functional MRI (fMRI). During fMRI, participants completed an experimental task where they evaluated policy positions attributed to hypothetical political candidates. Each block of trials focused on one candidate (Democrat or Republican), but all …

Is Cooperative Memory Special? The Role Of Costly Errors, Context, And Social Network Size When Remembering Cooperative Actions, Jeffrey R. Stevens, Tim Winke
Jeffrey Stevens Publications
Theoretical studies of cooperative behavior have focused on decision strategies, such as tit-for-tat, that depend on remembering a partner’s last choices. Yet, an empirical study by Stevens et al. (2011) demonstrated that human memory may not meet the requirements that needed to use these strategies. When asked to recall the previous behavior of simulated partners in a cooperative memory task, participants performed poorly, making errors in 10–24% of the trials. However, we do not know the extent to which this task taps specialized cognition for cooperation. It may be possible to engage participants in more cooperative, strategic thinking, which may …

This study evaluates the relationship between the changes in proportion of migration-related queries reported by Google Trends and changes in volume of migration flows between origin and destination countries. The study assesses if cost-free Google Trends improves the prediction of international migratory flows, and whether it could be proposed as a tool for organizations and policymakers. Previous research has used the activity of email users and other online services to track human mobility. At the same time, IP geolocation linked to Google Search has proven to be efficient in geographically tracking outbreaks of illnesses, as well as predicting changes in …

The present study aimed to examine the factor structure of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ; Bernstein & Fink, 1998), highlight rates of abuse and neglect among Burundian adolescents, compare these rates with those found in high-income nations, and examine the cumulative effect of multiple types of abuse and neglect on depression and PTSD symptoms. Participants were 231 adolescents and youth (M = 14.9, SD = 1.99, 58.4% female) from five provinces of Burundi, a country in Central Africa affected by war and political violence. Translation and back-translation of the CTQ was carried out to obtain an adaptation of CTQ …

Purpose: In this study, we explored experiences and feelings of safety in public facilities in relation to psychological well-being among transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) youth in the Midwest in the summer of 2016, in the context of ongoing legislative proposals and regulations regarding school and public bathroom use in the United States.
Methods: We used a mixed-method approach, with (1) a self-administered, paper-and-pencil survey of 120 TGNC youth, focusing on differences of self-esteem, resilience, quality of life (QoL), perceived stigma, feelings of safety, and experiences of public facility use and (2) two focus group interviews (n = 9) in …
