The Role Of Young Environmental Activists In Iceland And Furthering Youth Engagement With Environmental Issues, Story Schwantes Oct 2017

The Role Of Young Environmental Activists In Iceland And Furthering Youth Engagement With Environmental Issues, Story Schwantes

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper looks at the role of youth environmental activism in Iceland and how these actors view their work in a country which has long held a reputation as one of the greenest in the world. Much of the credit for that distinction goes not to careful choices, sacrifice, or excellent stewardship but rather to its ideal geography providing massive geothermal energy which Iceland turns into electricity, a clean renewable source. So are there young environmental activists in Iceland, and if so what do they do? Short answer: yes, and they study and talk. The long answer is more complex. …

Geopolitical Relations: Uganda’S Role In The Development Of The River Nile, Jordan Williams

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study examined the geopolitical relations of the Nile Basin by looking at Uganda as a case study, and analyzed Uganda’s use and development of the River Nile. It reviews the history of transboundary politics and treaties along with Uganda’s development projects in the region. The paper then discusses modern relations and agreements, with a focus on the most recent agreement between the Riparian States, the Cooperative Framework Agreement, and how Uganda fits into them with regards to their interest in hydropower development within their borders on the Nile. It then explores possible future developments on the river and the …

Confabulation In Individuals With Disorders Of The Corpus Callosum: Educational Implications, Cheryl Lynn Wright Oct 2017

Confabulation In Individuals With Disorders Of The Corpus Callosum: Educational Implications, Cheryl Lynn Wright

Dissertations

Individuals with disorders of the corpus callosum (DCC) may have subtle cognitive differences. Historically, confabulation has been associated with DCC. Therapies to mitigate confabulation is a newly emerging field. This study explores the possible educational implications that those with DCC may experience with confabulation.

The community of people with DCC and the community of people who interact with individuals with DCC were surveyed to ascertain the prevalence of confabulation within the population of those with DCC. A subset of questions probed whether age and/or gender impact the rates of reported confabulation. The research paradigm included a section that covered the …

What All Americans Should Know About Women In The Muslim World: Clarifying Stereotypes About Muslim Women In Morocco, Alexandra M. Krain Oct 2017

What All Americans Should Know About Women In The Muslim World: Clarifying Stereotypes About Muslim Women In Morocco, Alexandra M. Krain

What All Americans Should Know About Women in the Muslim World

The stereotypes about Muslims in Morocco as well as Morocco in general are widespread and often incorrect. The present paper combines both scholarly review and personal experience to clarify stereotypes about public space, work, education, and personal life, focusing specifically on women. Hopefully, this analysis will assist in educating the public about Muslims in Morocco and reveal the under-appreciated similarities between Moroccan and American women.

Active Resistors: The Women Of Post-Revolution Iran, Sofia E. Mouritsen Oct 2017

Active Resistors: The Women Of Post-Revolution Iran, Sofia E. Mouritsen

What All Americans Should Know About Women in the Muslim World

In this paper, I challenge the notion that Muslim or Middle Eastern women are passive acceptors of discrimination. After examining how Iranian women resisted governmental discrimination following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, I consider a number of factors that may have led to the reversal of some of these discriminatory policies in the 1990’s. How much of an effect did women’s demands for equality have on the government’s decisions? This question of effectiveness introduces a longtime debate between Islamic feminists, who advocate for working with the theocratic government and using Islam to frame their demands for equality, and secular feminists, who …

“If You Want Peace, Work For Justice:” Assessing Pope Paul Vi As A Peacebuilder On The Levels Of Insight And Action, Christopher W. Hrynkow Oct 2017

“If You Want Peace, Work For Justice:” Assessing Pope Paul Vi As A Peacebuilder On The Levels Of Insight And Action, Christopher W. Hrynkow

Peace and Conflict Studies

Paul VI was the first reigning pope to travel via airplane. On one such trip, he addressed the UN General Assembly, emphatically declaring “War never again! Never again war!” During the same period, Paul VI also saw the Second Vatican Council through to its completion. Vatican II produced an articulation of substantive peace in one of its final documents, Gaudium et Spes. This article employs an analytical yardstick through reading Gaudium et Spes in conversation with a Peace and Conflict Studies perspective, as a means to assess Paul VI’s peacemaking efforts on the levels of insight and action. Specifically, …

Critical Thinking And The Acrl Framework: Fake News And Fallacies, Mandi Goodsett Oct 2017

Critical Thinking And The Acrl Framework: Fake News And Fallacies, Mandi Goodsett

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

Critical thinking is characterized by the careful, reflective judgement of ideas as a guide for action. The dispositions and skills of critical thinking share a lot with the ACRL Frameworks’ frame, “Authority is Constructed and Contextual,” which many librarians are already attempting to incorporate into their teaching. Informed by the critical thinking education literature, librarians teaching about authority (even in one-shot library sessions) can encourage critical thinking skills and dispositions, which help students overcome their own flawed thinking and make better decisions. This presentation will explore the many decades of research about critical thinking in the classroom, and demonstrate its …

Prisoner Of Context: The Truman Doctrine Speech And J. Edgar Hoover’S Rhetorical Realism, Stephen Underhill Oct 2017

Prisoner Of Context: The Truman Doctrine Speech And J. Edgar Hoover’S Rhetorical Realism, Stephen Underhill

Communications Faculty Research

In this project, I argue that J. Edgar Hoover’s style of political realism should be studied by critics because it long preceded that of President Harry S. Truman. Thestyle belonged to a stockpile of anti-Communist imagery that helped to shape how the Truman Doctrine speech was drafted and how audiences interpreted its meanings in more local domestic politics. When Truman fınally announced that the Soviet Union had challenged international protocol, I argue that he confırmed the vision that his Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director and other detractors had developed throughout the New Deal to discredit reformers who challenged issues …

Increasing Faculty Collaboration And Community Engagement Through Critical Librarianship And Public Sphere Pedagogy, Mandi Goodsett, Adrienne Gosselin Oct 2017

Increasing Faculty Collaboration And Community Engagement Through Critical Librarianship And Public Sphere Pedagogy, Mandi Goodsett, Adrienne Gosselin

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

Through the lense of critical librarianship, librarians are becoming increasingly involved in social justice and human rights issues. This poster describes a collaboration between a subject librarian and a faculty member in which students were given an assignment that drew on Public Sphere Pedagogy (PSP). The goal of PSP is to increase students’ sense of civic agency and personal and social responsibility by connecting their classwork to public arenas.

ENG 208 is a course that intersects with Black Studies and Women’s Studies, and the PSP project built on an assignment to read Blanche Cleans Up, a detective novel targeting lead …

The Open Textbook Toolkit: Seeding Successful Partnerships For Collaboration Between Academic Libraries And University Presses, Mira Waller, William M. Cross, Lillian S. Rigling Oct 2017

The Open Textbook Toolkit: Seeding Successful Partnerships For Collaboration Between Academic Libraries And University Presses, Mira Waller, William M. Cross, Lillian S. Rigling

Western Libraries Publications

Libraries and university presses coexist in a complex and increasingly consolidated scholarly communication ecosystem. Each brings different strengths, values, and viewpoints that can inform and enrich a joint project. In this paper we discuss potential barriers to and benefits of collaboration between academic libraries and university presses and introduce a case study of such a collaboration: the Open Textbook Toolkit. This project, funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, is currently investigating the components needed to support faculty in one discipline, psychology, who are considering adopting open educational resources. By leveraging both library and press …

Taking A Person-Centered Approach To Personality: A Latent-Profile Analysis Of The Hexaco Model Of Personality, Kabir N. Daljeet, Nicholas L. Bremner, Erica A. Giammarco, John P. Meyer, Sampo V. Paunonen Oct 2017

Taking A Person-Centered Approach To Personality: A Latent-Profile Analysis Of The Hexaco Model Of Personality, Kabir N. Daljeet, Nicholas L. Bremner, Erica A. Giammarco, John P. Meyer, Sampo V. Paunonen

Psychology Publications

Our study applies a person-centered approach to the HEXACO model of personality using latent profile analysis (LPA). While the traditional variable-centered approach assumes that the relations among variables within a population are homogenous, the person-centered approach identifies subgroups within samples that have similar scores on several variables of interest, in this case, the six factors of personality. Data from two independent samples were collected at a large North American university. The results of LPA revealed five distinct and interpretable profiles that replicated and were found to be consistent across both samples. We discuss how our findings attest to the meaningfulness …

The Creature Questions Its Reflection: Lyrical Feminist Explorations Of Reference Desk Interactions, Alexandrina Hanam, Corinne Gilroy Oct 2017

The Creature Questions Its Reflection: Lyrical Feminist Explorations Of Reference Desk Interactions, Alexandrina Hanam, Corinne Gilroy

FIMS Publications

The lyric scholarship of Canadian poet-scholars such as Jan Zwicky, Anne Carson, and Kathleen McConnell provides space for literary, analytic, and artistic critique of library reference practice and interactions. Lyric scholarship is a poetic and methodological tool that is used here to interrogate the dependence-driven customer service model embedded in women-dominated service professions, while gesturing toward alternatives that cultivate inter-dependence, independence, and equity. Significant portions of this piece are structured to evoke Zwicky’s Wisdom & Metaphor, in which the author’s own verses live on the left, mirroring and responding to quotes from other writers and thinkers on the right. The …

Vocabulary Learning Benefits From Rem After Slow-Wave Sleep., Laura J Batterink, Carmen E Westerberg, Ken A Paller Oct 2017

Vocabulary Learning Benefits From Rem After Slow-Wave Sleep., Laura J Batterink, Carmen E Westerberg, Ken A Paller

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Memory reactivation during slow-wave sleep (SWS) influences the consolidation of recently acquired knowledge. This reactivation occurs spontaneously during sleep but can also be triggered by presenting learning-related cues, a technique known as targeted memory reactivation (TMR). Here we examined whether TMR can improve vocabulary learning. Participants learned the meanings of 60 novel words. Auditory cues for half the words were subsequently presented during SWS in an afternoon nap. Memory performance for cued versus uncued words did not differ at the group level but was systematically influenced by REM sleep duration. Participants who obtained relatively greater amounts of REM showed a …

Accumulation Of Non-Numerical Evidence During Nonsymbolic Number Processing In The Brain: An Fmri Study, Tali Leibovich, Daniel Ansari Oct 2017

Accumulation Of Non-Numerical Evidence During Nonsymbolic Number Processing In The Brain: An Fmri Study, Tali Leibovich, Daniel Ansari

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Behavioral evidence has shown that when performing a nonsymbolic number comparison task (e.g., deciding which of two dot arrays contains more dots), participants' responses are sensitive to affected by both numerical (e.g., number of items) and non-numerical magnitudes (i.e., area, density, etc.). Thus far it is unclear what brain circuits support this process of accumulating non-numerical variables during nonsymbolic number processing. To investigate this, 21 adult participants were asked to engage in a dot comparison task. To measure the neural correlates of accumulating numerical and non-numerical variables, we manipulated the number of the non-numerical magnitudes that were congruent (correlated with …

Videogame Developers Among 'Extreme Workers': Are Death Marches Over?, Marie-Josee Legault, Johanna Weststar Oct 2017

Videogame Developers Among 'Extreme Workers': Are Death Marches Over?, Marie-Josee Legault, Johanna Weststar

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

Purpose: The videogame industry is a work environment that is emblematic of O’Carroll’s (2015) encompassing model of a 24/7/365 working time model of flexibility. We use O’Carroll’s model to challenge two myths about videogame developers (VGDs): the long hours of work are in fact unpredictable hours, and flextime HR programs do not allow for real control over working hours.

Design/methodology/approach: We use a mixed methods approach (international online survey and 100 Canadian interviews) to analyse the case of VGDs - a different, but similar type of worker to the IT workers analysed by O’Carroll.

Findings: We can generalize O’Carroll’s model …

Consciousness: Where We Are At, Imants Barušs Oct 2017

Consciousness: Where We Are At, Imants Barušs

Psychology

It is useful every couple of years to take a bird’s eye view of consciousness studies and reflect on what we see. When I look, I still see two streams, one of which is the social and political framework for the study of consciousness, and the other of which is the substance of what we know about consciousness. The former is still largely defined by the extent to which the scientific study of consciousness has been freed from a materialist agenda. The latter includes recent research into the clarity of cognitive functioning in the absence of sufficient neurological support for …

Structure Of Wamesa (Ling 067) Syllabus, Emily Gasser Oct 2017

Structure Of Wamesa (Ling 067) Syllabus, Emily Gasser

Digital Humanities Curricular Development

Wamesa is a member of the under-studied South Halmahera-West New Guinea subgroup of the Austronesian language family, with roughly 5000 speakers in West Papua, Indonesia. This course will rely on both primary data, including my fieldnotes and recordings, and published work to look at the phonology, morphology, and syntax of the language. We’ll also look at Wamesa as it compares to its sister languages within SHWNG, and see what it can tell us about linguistic theory. Finally, we’ll take a look at the cultural and political context in which Wamesa is spoken. This course will utilize theoretical tools of linguistic …

Physiological Arousal And Self-Reported Valence For Erotica Images Correlate With Sexual Policy Preferences, Amanda Friesen, Kevin B. Smith, John R. Hibbing Oct 2017

Physiological Arousal And Self-Reported Valence For Erotica Images Correlate With Sexual Policy Preferences, Amanda Friesen, Kevin B. Smith, John R. Hibbing

Political Science Publications

Individuals do not always accurately report the forces driving their policy preferences. Such inaccuracy may result from the fact that true justifications are socially undesirable or less persuasive than competing justifications or are unavailable in conscious awareness. Because of the delicate nature of these issues, people may be particularly likely to misstate the reasons for preferences on gay marriage, abortion, abstinence-only education, and premarital sex. Advocates on both sides typically justify their preferences in terms of preserving social order, maintaining moral values, or protecting civil liberties, not in terms of their own sexual preferences. Though these are the stated reasons, …
