Heather will discuss a range of linked data initiatives at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She is currently on a one-year sabbatical titled "Learning Linked Data." She will discuss the approach she's taking in her sabbatical, a linked data project she is starting regarding Newfoundland Regiment soldiers in WWI, a couple of small linked data projects others at Memorial Libraries are participating in, as well as outline the Canadian Linked Data Initiative and some of the linked data resources and projects it has started.

Arts-Based Education For Enchanting, Embodied And Embedded Sustainability, Hans Dieleman

This article sketches two contrasting ideal-typical narratives of sustainability, a disenchanting and an enchanting one, and argues that current thinking in sustainability is mainly situated in the narrative of disenchantment. This narrative is based on various obsolete philosophical assumptions, and hampers the transformation process, as it distances the population from being part of this. It then sketches the narrative of enchanting sustainability and shows how this has the capacity to engage, intrigue and motivate people to be involved. It is rooted in an arts-based approach of connecting aesthetics, associative thinking, reflective practice, emotion-based working, aspiration and intentionality. The article moves …

Libraries face many challenges in managing descriptive metadata for ebooks, including quality control, completeness of coverage, and ongoing management. The recent emergence of library management systems that automatically provide descriptive metadata for e-resources activated in system knowledge bases means that ebook management models are moving toward both greater efficiency and more complex implementation and maintenance choices. Automated and data-driven processes for ebook management have always been desirable, but in the current environment, they are necessary. Many libraries have not yet taken advantage of specialized MARC fields for music and for characteristics of representative expressions in their discovery interfaces. This poster shows one approach to display, search, and faceting of selected fields using Ex Libris' Primo. For example, it will demonstrate how data in fields such as 382 (medium of performance) and 257 (country of producing entity) were manipulated using Primo norm rules.

In the event of a disaster, regardless of the type or scope, the first response is always local. For the institutions and organizations charged with safeguarding the nation’s cultural and historic resources – museums, historical societies, libraries, and municipal offices, to name just a few – building relationships with local first responders and emergency managers before disaster strikes is key to ensuring the safety of staff and collections. State emergency management agencies are also collaborating with their state cultural agencies to protect these valuable and vulnerable resources. At the midpoint of the second decade of the 21^st century, the world is experiencing deliberate destruction of cultural property at a scale not seen since the Second World War. Future protection and preservation of cultural heritage depends on learning from tragedy and applying these lessons as pro-actively as possible. First, we are discovering that no matter the threat, there are people who risk their lives to save artifacts and features of their culture, and the motives for this courage are retrospectively clear. Keynote Address - When Violent Nonstate Actors Target Cultural Heritage Sites, Victor Asal

Why would organizations attack or kill people at cultural heritage sites or destroy such sites? Using data from the Big Allied and Dangerous insurgent dataset that has data on 140 insurgent organizations from 1998-2012, and data from the Global Terrorism Database, this presentation examines the factors that make insurgent groups more likely to attack such sites or kill people at such sites. We look at the impact of organizational ideology, organizational structure and power as well as country level factors.

This session will provide an overview of the disaster relief and assistance programs available under the Stafford Act, when they are triggered, and how private non-profit and cultural institutions can plan for natural hazards and take full advantage of available aid. Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in August 2005 and created the single largest disaster for cultural resources that the United States has witnessed since the inception of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) in 1966. Notably, the NHPA created the National Register of Historic Places, our nation’s catalog of important cultural resources. The NHPA also stipulates that any federal undertaking which may adversely affect National Register eligible resources be mitigated. For the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Katrina created the largest compliance project ever under Section 106 of the NHPA.

Depression goes untreated at high rates due to a variety of treatment barriers. Computerized Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CCBT) provides an alternative to face-to-face therapy that addresses those treatment barriers t, reducing the cost of therapy, moving the location of therapy to the participants' homes, and providing therapy for those who cannot be seen by a therapist due to excess demand for therapy. Although much research has been done showing CCBT's effectiveness, there is a lack of literature describing the actual implementation of computerized therapy. This review outlines the integration of CCBT into therapeutic practice, including what factors determine its effectiveness. …

Diet Modifications To Treat Depression: A Potential Supplement To Pharmacological Medications

Pharmacological drugs have become generally accepted as the primary form of treatment for depression, but simple modifications to diet should be another option taken into consideration. Antidepressant drugs are often expensive and have negative side effects, but some dietary supplements and or changes in diet are less of a financial burden and less physically detrimental. In studies of the role diet plays in depression, specific nutrients have been identified, including omega-3 lipids, zinc, folate, vitamin B12, and tryptophan, which shows particular promise in the treatment of depression. Although combinations of nutrients or treatments could negatively interact, further research could identify …

Measuring A New Demographic: The Swag Inventory 2012

The new prevalence of the social phenomenon of "swag" merits attention from psychological researchers. The published literature currently addresses related constructs, such as arrogance, narcissism, and male body image, but there are no existing studies that specifically deal with swag. We operationally defined swag as "arrogance rooted in physical appearance" and developed the Swag Inventory 2012 (SI). We hypothesized that the SI would be a reliable and valid measure of swag in college-aged men. Thirty items were constructed on a 5-point Likert scale and rated for content validity by a panel of undergraduate psychology students. Fifteen items achieved acceptable levels …

Studies have found that most college students have ineffective study habits. Despite this fact, students may feel hesitant or even hostile to changes ii study routines. To assist academic advisers in facilitating study-habit improvement in students, we developed the Student Readiness to Change Scale (STRETCH). This scale measures students' readiness to change in three domains: recognition of the need to change, a desire to change, and the perceived ability to change. We devised five Likert scale items for each "domain, making 15 items in total. We distributed the scale to a sample of J03 college students and received 94 completed …

Educational outcomes for children have recently decreased nationwide, in part because of a decline in teachers' efforts to sufficiently educate students. Additionally, research indicates a decline in parents' contributions to their children's learning. As a result, more students are failing to graduate from high school, and suggestions implemented to improve the situation do not appear to be effective. Parents are allotting less time to help their children with schoolwork, which contributes in hindering the creation of a positive learning atmosphere at home. The ubiquity of the Internet in society has had a lasting impact on many things, including the commonly accepted ideals concerning infidelity. This paper reviews current literature on infidelity, beginning with the negative consequences of infidelity and the characteristics most commonly associated with individuals involved in infidelity. Although there is extensive knowledge gained from these studies, the advent of the Internet has changed infidelity, including both the type of people involved and the actions that are considered to be unfaithful. Perceptions Of Interracial Marriage Through The Eyes Of Individualistic And Collectivist Cultures

Recent increases in immigration and globalization show dramatically augmented numbers of interracial marriages, especially in the United States. This study examined the unique effects of ethnicity on attitudes towards interracial marriages, particularly those with a collectivist (Eastern) and individualistic (Western) cultural background. A combined sample of 171 Caucasian and Asian college students responded to the Interracial Marriage Attitude Measure (IMAM) to measure acceptance rates of interracial relationships. Findings suggest that race is an effective predictor of attitude, and Asians were significantly less favorable towards interracial marriages than Caucasians. Traumatic Brain Injury (TB!) is a leading cause of many of debilitating injuries and even death. These injuries often occur in common athletic activities, such as bicycling, snow skiing, snowboarding, football, and skateboarding. TB! resulting from each of these activities can be reduced by the proper use of certified helmets. Surveys have been conducted with college-age students, neurosurgeons, and the general population, and the results show that many believe in the efficacy of helmets as a means of protection. A Hoarding Index For Adults

Hoarding is defined in terms of four observable aspects: (a) accumulation, (b) collection, (c) lack of disposal, and (d) pathological attachment. Typically, hoarding has an early age at onset and displays a progression of clinical symptoms. Early-stage detection and diagnosis in young and middle-aged adults could allow a therapeutic response to hoarding symptoms in a timely manner and prevent later-life hoarding trauma. We hypothesized that the Hoarding Index for Adults (RIA) would reliably and validly measure two domains: (a) abnormally-intensified patterns of acquisition and (b) reduced patterns of disposal. The diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is rising, and the explanation is difficult to identify. Multiple factors play a role in diagnosis beyond the presenting symptoms. First, society is simply more aware of ASD than before, due to increased exposure. However, greater awareness alone does not give the full picture. Second, having a child with ASD within a community increases the likelihood of more diagnoses. Lastly, despite parents' resistance to labeling their children, they may feel pressured to accept a diagnosis in order to receive services that teachers or mental health professionals deem necessary. This talk is concerned with the science and impacts of climate change from global to New York scales. It will provide an assessment of how the climate has changed over the past Century based on a purely observational perspective. The scientific basis for anthroprogenic climate change will be explained and discussed including a description of the “greenhouse effect” and why it is important for life on this planet. We will briefly discuss global and local consequences of a warmer climate and what we need to be prepared for going forward in the coming decades.

There can be many barriers for success in Coordinated Collection Development (CCD) projects. Delivery and ownership are major concerns, and libraries are committing institutional funds, often to contribute to group or consortial collections, which requires trust and a consistent measuring of whether the CCD venture is a good use of scarce collection dollars. CCD efforts often require advance agreement on policies, collection areas, and dedicated funds, which can lead to decreased overall satisfaction. This paper uses a case study from the University of South Florida (USF) as a framework to explore methods for determining the curriculum and research needs of faculty across disciplinary boundaries and ways for promoting library resources and services to departments across campus.
