Background: Overdose deaths, specifically related to opioids, have been identified as a public health problem both nationally and in the state of Maine. Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution (OEND) is an innovative model of patient education that has been shown to be effective in increasing knowledge of overdose risk and has the potential to help reduce opiate related overdose deaths.

Methods: A 28-item web-based survey examining clinician attitudes, OEND practices and characteristics was distributed to 196 Maine based physicians with a Drug Enforcement Agency waiver to prescribe burprenorphine/naloxone. “Urine Cotinine in Children and Parental Behavior Modification” was designed by Dr. Deirdre Burns, a pediatrician at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital (BBCH). It was implemented as a pilot study to determine whether urine cotinine testing in children who are admitted to the hospital for respiratory illness and tracking parental smoking behaviors over time was feasible. Parents were given a brief survey to assess their current smoking behaviors and to understand their readiness to quit smoking. They received smoking cessation materials provided by the Breathe Easy Coalition of Maine. These materials outline information about second-hand and third-hand smoke, and encourage …

The present two-part study examined the effects of coloring mandalas on state anxiety reduction with considerations of duration spent coloring and Big-5 personality traits. It was hypothesized that coloring mandalas for 30 minutes would significantly reduce levels of state anxiety. There were three coloring conditions that were randomly assigned to 105 participants. Measures included a Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) pre- and post-test which assessed levels of state and trait anxiety, and a Big-Five Personality Scale that examined five main personality traits (Goldberg, 1992). The inclusion of transition-age young people into community, work and cultural activities is a challenge when young people struggle with mental health issues. Young people who experience depression, anxiety, eating disorders and other issues are at risk for marginalisation and inadequate services, particularly in rural areas. The best response to these young people is to provide access to high quality, evidence-based mental health treatment, regardless of location. This is a study of the experiences of forced terminations in correctional facilities, particularly their impact on the working alliance between mental health service providers and incarcerated patients. The study includes an introduction to the research problem and its context, followed by a discussion of the literature on the working alliance in psychotherapy, conditions of forced terminations in the treatment of the incarcerated, the problem of forced termination and the working alliance in the correctional settings, and the study’s research methodology. The following study explored the experience of Indian psychotherapists applying Western psychotherapy to Indians. Charmaz’ (2006) Grounded theory methodology was utilized. Seven Indian psychotherapists were interviewed. Interview data yielded the theory of Modification as Resistance. Modification as Resistance captured Indian psychotherapists' attempts to modify Western psychotherapy to resist the erosion of local ways of healing due to the dominance of Western science. Results add to existing critiques of Western psychotherapy applied to Eastern populations. Recommendations based on results are offered to facilitate evidence-based practice (American Psychological Association [APA], 2006) with diverse populations. การวิจัยนี้เป็นการศึกษาอิทธิพลของโลกาภิวัตน์ทางเศรษฐกิจที่มีต่อประเทศสังคมนิยม โดยเป็นการศึกษาบรรษัทข้ามชาติจากประเทศกำลังพัฒนาที่ไปลงทุนทางตรง (Foreign Direct Investment, FDI) ในรัฐสังคมนิยมโดยใช้กรณีศึกษาของบรรษัทข้ามชาติจากประเทศไทย ได้แก่ เครือเจริญโภคภัณฑ์ (CP) ปูนซิเมนต์ไทย (SCG) และกลุ่มไทยซัมมิท (Thai Summit) ที่ไปลงทุนในสาธารณรัฐสังคมนิยมเวียดนาม วัตถุประสงค์ต้องการทราบว่าโลกาภิวัตน์ทางเศรษฐกิจที่มีตัวแสดงสำคัญคือบรรษัทข้ามชาติมีอิทธิพลหรือไม่อย่างไรในเวียดนาม และ ต้องการทราบว่าบรรษัทข้ามชาติไทยจะมีอิทธิพลในฐานะตัวแสดงทางการเมืองระหว่างประเทศในกรณีการลงทุนในสาธารณรัฐสังคมนิยมเวียดนามหรือไม่ อย่างไร การศึกษานี้ใช้วิธีการในเชิงคุณภาพโดยการศึกษาสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกผู้ให้ข้อมูลหลัก 49 ท่าน ประกอบกับการศึกษาตำรา บทความ ตลอดจนสื่อสารมวลชนต่างๆ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า เวียดนามไม่สามารถหลีกเลี่ยงจากอิทธิพลของโลกาภิวัตน์ทางเศรษฐกิจได้ แต่มีปัจจัยสำคัญคือ การเป็นรัฐเผด็จการคอมมิวนิสต์ การปลูกฝังค่านิยมตามแนวทางขงจี๊อ และค่านิยมรักชาติ เป็นเครื่องมือตลอดจนเป็นภูมิคุ้มกันสำคัญ ในการสนับสนุนให้เวียดนามเป็นตัวแสดงที่มียุทธศาสตร์ และสามารถอยู่ท่ามกลางโลกาภิวัตน์ทางเศรษฐกิจได้ ในมิติของการเป็นตัวแสดงทางการเมืองของบรรษัทข้ามชาติไทย ผู้วิจัยพบว่าในระยะเริ่มแรกของการเข้าไปลงทุน ซีพีมีฐานะเป็นตัวแสดงทางการเมืองระหว่างประเทศเนื่องจากการครอบครองเทคโนโลยีทางการเกษตร และจะมีส่วนสำคัญในการแก้ปัญหาด้านเศรษฐกิจและการเกษตรที่เวียดนามเผชิญอยู่ เอสซีจีไม่มีฐานะในการเป็นตัวแสดงทางการเมืองระหว่างประเทศจากปรัชญาการทำธุรกิจของบริษัท ขณะที่ไทยซัมมิทไม่มีบทบาทในฐานะตัวแสดงการเมืองระหว่างประเทศโดยการลงทุนของไทยซัมมิทนั้นได้ประโยชน์ในฐานะที่อยู่ในห่วงโซ่การผลิตยานยนต์ที่ได้รับการสนับสนุนเป็นอย่างดีอยู่แล้ว การดำเนินธุรกิจในระยะต่อมาพบว่าซีพีไม่มีฐานะเป็นตัวแสดงทางการเมืองระหว่างประเทศเนื่องจากปัญหาด้านการเกษตรในเวียดนามได้รับการแก้ไข เอสซีจีในเวียดนามไม่มีฐานะเป็นตัวแสดงทางการเมืองระหว่างประเทศด้วยตัวเอง แต่สามารถใช้ความเข้มแข็งในประเทศผลักดันนโยบายผ่านตัวแสดงทางเมืองของไทยได้ ในขณะที่การลงทุนของไทยซัมมิทยังคงเป็นไปในลักษณะเช่นเดิม

การวิจัยเรื่องการสื่อสารรณรงค์บนพื้นที่ออนไลน์ Change.org มุ่งศึกษาใน 3 ประเด็น ได้แก่ 1) ลักษณะประเด็นสังคมที่ปรากฏบนพื้นที่ออนไลน์ Change.org 2) กลยุทธ์การสื่อสารในการสร้างการมีส่วนร่วมของสาธารณชนบนพื้นที่ออนไลน์ Change.org 3) ความผูกพันของพลเมืองเน็ตต่อแบรนด์ Change.org โดยการวิจัยครั้งนี้ผู้วิจัยใช้วิธีการวิจัยแบบผสมผสาน (Mixed Method) ด้วยเทคนิคการวิจัย ดังนี้ การวิเคราะห์เนื้อหา (Content Analysis), การสัมภาษณ์แบบเจาะลึก (In-depth Interview) และวิธีการสำรวจจากแบบสอบถามออนไลน์ (Online Questionnaire) ผลการวิจัยในประเด็นแรกพบว่าลักษณะประเด็นสังคมที่ปรากฏบนพื้นที่ออนไลน์ Change.org แบ่งเป็น 2 ประเภท คือ ประเด็นสาธารณะ (Public Issues) และปัญหาระดับบุคคล (Private Troubles) โดยนักรณรงค์ใช้พื้นที่ออนไลน์ Change.org เพื่อสื่อสารใน 5 วัตถุประสงค์ ได้แก่ (1) ให้ข้อมูล (2) อัปเดตข่าวสาร (3) โน้มน้าวให้คล้อยตาม (4) ขอบคุณ และ (5) ประกาศชัยชนะ ซึ่งกลุ่มผู้มีอำนาจตัดสินใจแบ่งได้เป็น 3 กลุ่ม คือ (1) หน่วยงานในการปกครองของรัฐ (2) องค์กรเอกชน และ (3) องค์กรเพื่อสังคม โดยผลการรณรงค์บนพื้นที่ออนไลน์ Change.org มี 2 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ แคมเปญที่ได้รับความสนใจจากสาธารณชน และแคมเปญที่ได้รับการเปลี่ยนแปลงในเชิงนโยบาย ผลการวิจัยในประเด็นที่สองพบว่ากลยุทธ์การสื่อสารในการสร้างการมีส่วนร่วมของสาธารณชนบนพื้นที่ออนไลน์ Change.org มีทั้งหมด 4 กลยุทธ์ ได้แก่ (1) การทำให้เห็นภาพ หรือจินตทัศน์ (Visualization) (2) การสร้างความผูกพันกับผู้มีส่วนได้ส่วนเสีย (Stakeholder Engagement) (3) การจัดการข้อมูล (Information Management) และ (4) ความเชื่อมโยงกับสถานการณ์ปัจจุบัน (Current issues …

การเล่าเรื่องขุนโจรจากเหตุการณ์จริง ในนวนิยายชุด "เสือใบ-เสือดำ" ของ ป.อินทรปาลิต, ฐิติพงศ์ อินทรปาลิต

การวิจัยครั้งนี้เป็นงานวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการเล่าเรื่อง โครงสร้างตัวละครและการสร้างแนวเรื่องแบบขุนโจรที่อิงจากเหตุการณ์จริงและเพื่อวิเคราะห์สภาพการณ์ทางสังคมและแนวทางการเล่าเรื่องแบบบุกเบิกตะวันตกที่มีอิทธิพลต่องานเขียนนวนิยายชุด เสือใบ - เสือดำ ของ ป.อินทรปาลิต โดยใช้การวิเคราะห์ตัวบท (Textual Analysis) และการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก (In-depth Interview) จากนวนิยายชุดเสือใบ เสือดำและดาวโจร จากสำนักพิมพ์ฉบับผดุงศึกษา (ไม่ปรากฏปีที่พิมพ์) จำนวนทั้งสิ้น 12 เล่ม และจากการรวบรวมข้อมูลจากเอกสารที่เกี่ยวข้อง ผลการวิเคราะห์พบว่า กลวิธีการเล่าเรื่องและโครงสร้างตัวละคร ด้านโครงสร้างการเล่าเรื่อง มีการสร้างแนวเรื่องแบบขุนโจรจากแนวเรื่องแบบบุกเบิกตะวันตก (Western Genre) เป็นหลัก อาทิ การท้าดวลปืนตามลักษณะตัวละครแบบวีรบุรุษนอกกฎหมาย ความขัดแย้งในความอยุติธรรมระหว่างอำนาจรัฐและชุมชน โดยผสมผสานเหตุการณ์จริงในบริบทของสังคมไทย เข้ากับจินตนาการและขนบของการเล่าเรื่อง การปฏิบัติภารกิจที่มาจากแนวเรื่องผจญภัย (Adventure Genre) การต่อสู้จากแนวเรื่องแบบบู๊ล้างผลาญ (Action Genre) การทำการรบการสงครามจากแนวเรื่องแบบสงคราม (War Genre) และความรักในสตรีเพศจากแนวเรื่องรักโศก ด้านการสร้างตัวละคร พบว่า การใช้ชื่อตัวละครในนวนิยายได้เค้าโครงมาจากตัวละครจากเหตุการณ์จริงบางส่วน จากสภาพการณ์ทางสังคมของไทยในช่วงที่ไทยประสบปัญหาจากสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 เกิดตัวละครโจรผู้ร้ายมากมาย ทำให้การกำหนดคุณลักษณะของตัวละคร แบบวีรบุรุษขุนโจร คือ ความกล้าหาญ ความเก่งกาจ ความมีคุณธรรม และการรักษาเกียรติและศักดิ์ศรี ที่สอดคล้องกับองค์ประกอบการสร้างตัวละครชายในวรรณคดีไทย

อิทธิพลของรูปแบบการจัดกิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่ต่อความกลมเกลียวในกลุ่มนักศึกษาและความผูกพันกับคณะ : การวิเคราะห์อิทธิพลส่งผ่านการระบุตัวตนทางสังคม, พัชรวุฒิ สุภาคง

งานวิจัยนี้ศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างกิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่ (แบบสร้างสรรค์ และไม่สร้างสรรค์) กับความกลมเกลียวในกลุ่มและความผูกพันด้านจิตใจต่อคณะภายในมหาวิทยาลัย โดยมีการระบุตัวตนทางสังคมเป็นตัวแปรส่งผ่าน กลุ่มตัวอย่างที่ใช้คือ นิสิต/นักศึกษา ระดับปริญญาตรี จากมหาวิทยาลัยในประเทศไทย จำนวน 331 คน ผลจากการวิเคราะห์โมเดลสมการโครงสร้าง (Structural Equation Modeling: SEM) ด้วยโปรแกรม LISREL Version 9.30 (Jöreskog & Sörbom, 2017) พบว่า กิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่แบบสร้างสรรค์มีอิทธิพลทางตรงทางบวกต่อความกลมเกลียวในกลุ่มอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .01 ในขณะที่ไม่พบอิทธิพลทางตรงของกิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่แบบไม่สร้างสรรค์ต่อความกลมเกลียวในกลุ่ม ผลจากการวิเคราะห์อิทธิพลส่งผ่านพบว่า การระบุตัวตนทางสังคมเป็นตัวแปรส่งผ่านแบบบางส่วนของความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างกิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่แบบสร้างสรรค์และความกลมเกลียวในกลุ่ม และเป็นตัวแปรส่งผ่านแบบสมบูรณ์ของความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างกิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่แบบสร้างสรรค์และความผูกพันด้านจิตใจต่อคณะ นอกจากนี้ยังพบประเด็นที่น่าสนใจคือ กิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่แบบไม่สร้างสรรค์มีอิทธิพลทางบวกต่อการระบุตัวตนทางสังคมอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .01 ในขณะที่ไม่พบอิทธิพลทางตรงของกิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่ทั้งแบบสร้างสรรค์และไม่สร้างสรรค์ต่อความผูกพันด้านจิตใจต่อคณะ แต่พบอิทธิพลส่งผ่านแบบสมบูรณ์ของการระบุตัวตนทางสังคมต่อความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างกิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่แบบไม่สร้างสรรค์กับความกลมเกลียวในกลุ่มและความผูกพันด้านจิตใจต่อคณะ

This study investigated the effect of food intake, which is considered a form of health investment, on income in China, accounting also for socioeconomic factors. It used the 2011 wave of the China Health and Nutrition survey, including 42,870 observations in the analysis. Six dependent variables, each representing a different measure of income, were explored. Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a pervasive form of mental illness which affects millions of youth ages 12-18. It is characterized by a frequent and persistent pattern of angry mood, defiant behavior, and/or vindictiveness. Teenagers afflicted with ODD are often unwilling to participate in treatment and have difficulty responding to traditional therapy models. The current "Best Practices" model for treating ODD is extensive family therapy. As of today, there is no Best Practice method for providing direct treatment to the young people themselves. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is the middle ground between normal, age-appropriate memory impairment, and dementia. Whereas patients with MCI are able to cope with the memory deficit, those with dementia are not: Their memory impairment and other cognitive deficits are of sufficient magnitude to interfere with the patients’ ability to cope independently with daily activities. In both MCI and dementia, there is evidence of declining cognitive functions from a previously higher level of functioning. In both the conditions, there is also an evidence of dysfunction in one or more cognitive domains. There are two subtypes of MCI depending on whether …

Choices are often difficult to make by patients with Alzheimer Dementia. They often become acutely confused when faced with too many options because they are not able to retain in their working memory enough information about the various individual choices available. In this case study, we describe how an essentially simple benign task (choosing a dress to wear) can rapidly escalate and result in a catastrophic outcome. We examine what went wrong in the patient/caregiver interaction and how that potentially catastrophic situation could have been avoided or defused.

As designers and cognitive scientists begin to explore human experience as a relation between people and products, there is a need for constructs that index relational properties (i.e., properties of a product that are dependent on properties of an actor). One such construct that has recently become popular with designers is affordance. Affordances, such as pass-through-able, depend on properties of both an object (e.g., width of an opening) and properties of an actor (e.g., girth or shoulder width). On June 29, 2007, Alaska’s oldest educational institution, Sheldon Jackson College, ceased operations without notice. The closure left an uncertain future for the college’s students, faculty, staff, resources, and buildings including the Stratton Library and the over 48,000 items housed within. The Library’s collection not only contained the college’s academic collection, but it also housed two rare book collections, historical photos and plate glass negatives, as well as the archives documenting the school’s 128-year history. This article will track the relocation and current status of the Sheldon Jackson College archives and C.L. Andrews rare book collection.

Samoa’s history as an island nation, with its cultural heritage of migratory peoples, followed by settler colonialism and missionaries, has resulted in its uniquely amalgamated food system. Cuisine varies from traditional crops and recipes to imported canned goods, although dependence on the latter has led to wide-ranging health problems. A way to confront these problems is through reclaiming local cuisine, renewing its popularity and promoting the concept of food sovereignty. The role of semantic knowledge and familiarity on retrieval processes were investigated in a test of the associative deficit hypothesis (ADH), and the data were interpreted from the perspectives of fuzzy trace theory and source monitoring errors (Naveh-Benjamin, 2000). Younger and older adults (N=60) studied pairs of words for two recognition tests – an item test, for recognition of individual words, and an associative test, for recognition of word pairs. In the associative test, four word pairs were presented with a forced-choice response requirement (4AFC; Patterson & Hertzog, 2010). The psychology of eating behavior is increasingly important given that more than one- third of Americans are obese, with 74% of men considered overweight or obese (Overweight and Obesity Statistics, 2012). This study examines the relationship between core affect and healthy food choices. Though previous research has examined relationships between specific emotions and eating behavior, little is known about core affect or about these relationships in more naturalistic settings (outside the lab). Our research seeks to expand the concept of urban environmental stewardship to include the everyday stewardship practices of urban nontimber forest products foragers. Ethnographic data from 58 urban foragers and 18 land stewards in the city of Seattle (USA) revealed that foragers reported using a variety of practices to enhance and minimize negative desirable species and their habitats. Many of these practices were identical to those practiced by restoration volunteers in formal programs and align with Seattle Parks Department management objectives. Foragers actively sought to learn more about what practices are sustainable; many mentored others in sustainable harvesting practices. Most …

"Traffic volume forecasts are used by many transportation analysis and management systems to better characterize and react to fluctuating traffic patterns. Most current forecasting methods do not take advantage of the underlying functional characteristics of the time series to make predictions. This paper presents a methodology that uses Functional Principal Components Analysis (FPCA) to create smooth and differentiable daily traffic forecasts. The methodology is validated with a data set of 1,813 days of 15 minute aggregated traffic volume time series. "When developing a ground water model, the quality of the dataset should first be evaluated. Spatial outliers can lead to predictions which are not representative of actual conditions. In order to isolate misrepresentative points, a method is presented which examines the experimental variogram of a ground water elevation dataset. To define a threshold variance between pairs of ground water elevation measures, ground elevation values from a digital elevation model (DEM) are used to determine a maximum reasonable variance expected to occur on the experimental variogram.
