What Does Thai International Relations Want?, Jittipat Poonkham Jan 2017

What Does Thai International Relations Want?, Jittipat Poonkham

Journal of Social Sciences

The article employs the notion of 'forced choice' to reflect on and interrogate four key theoretical dilemmas in the IR scholarship in Thailand: (1) whether Thai IR is an art of the state or an academic discipline; (2) whether it is a 'problem-solving' or 'critical' theory; (3) whether there is a Thai IR theory; and (4) whether it should be a consensual field of study. It makes a case for a refusal of these forced choices. By engaging with a disciplinary history and autobiographical narrative (I, IR), the article suggests (1) the brief development of Thai IR, which has been …

A Comparative Study Of Economic Development Planning Organizations Of South Korea And Thailand During 1960-1980, Kamon Butsaban Jan 2017

A Comparative Study Of Economic Development Planning Organizations Of South Korea And Thailand During 1960-1980, Kamon Butsaban

Journal of Social Sciences

This research paper presents a comparative study on economic development planning organizations in Thailand and South Korea during 1960-1980. Most economists have so far explained Thailand's relative lack of progress in economic development compared to Korea in terms of differences in economic policies. In this context, this study focuses on the planning organizations that have profoundly influenced the implementation and contexts of economic policies in the two countries, namely South Korea's Economic Planning Board (EPB) and Thailand's National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB), to identify similarities and differences in the authority, roles, and structures of the organizations as well …

The Politics Of Buddhist Nationalism In Myanmar : History, Legitimacy And Democratic Transition, Saittawut Yutthaworakool Jan 2017

The Politics Of Buddhist Nationalism In Myanmar : History, Legitimacy And Democratic Transition, Saittawut Yutthaworakool

Journal of Social Sciences

This article aims to explore the historical development of Buddhist nationalism in Myanmar, and the way it has been politicized by the state. According to the study, political legitimacy has been constructed by the revival of Buddhist nationalism in two ways. First, it is through policy implementation and legislation of religious protection laws, which declare Buddhism's superiority in Myanmar and to segregate as well as discriminate against non-Buddhists in the conduct of their daily lives. The state uses state authorities, including an unelected civilian government and National Legislative Assembly, with retired soldiers and representatives from the tatmadaw (the military) as …

Philosophy Of Sufficiency Economy : A Philosophical Analysis, Choltis Dhirathiti Jan 2017

Philosophy Of Sufficiency Economy : A Philosophical Analysis, Choltis Dhirathiti

Journal of Social Sciences

An analysis of the ideas and concepts of, and within, the "Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy" has been conducted on the presupposition that the ethics of Buddhism and the notion of science are two underlying tenets of this philosophy. The compatibility of ideas between Buddhism and science has been generally recognized, especially on the issue of causality in human experience, but it requires more than an assertion of this compatibility if one wishes to render it meaningful and practical. The philosophy of sufficiency economy is an example of such rendering. The main expression to be analyzed is that sufficiency is to …

The Social Causes And Political Consequences Of Group Empathy, Cigdem Sirin, Nicholas Valentino, José Villalobos Jan 2017

The Social Causes And Political Consequences Of Group Empathy, Cigdem Sirin, Nicholas Valentino, José Villalobos

Departmental Papers (PS)

Recent scholarship has discovered significant racial/ethnic group variation in response to political threats suchas immigration and terrorism. Surprisingly, minority groups often simultaneously perceive themselves to be atgreater risk from such threats and yet still prefer more open immigration policies and civil libertiesprotections. We suggest a group-level empathy process may explain this puzzle: Due to their higher levels ofempathy for other disadvantaged groups, many minority group members support protections for others evenwhen their own interests are threatened. Little is known, however, about the unique properties of groupempathy or its role in policy opinion formation. In this study, we examine the reliability …

Explaining The Rise Of Isis, Anas Alqaed Jan 2017

Explaining The Rise Of Isis, Anas Alqaed

Political Science Theses and Capstones

In this paper I study the circumstances that led to the rise the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS/Daesh) and its economic power. I use articles, testimonies before US House of Representatives and analyze economic data to generate facts and draw conclusions. All references rely on primary source documents that were not released in an official capacity by ISIS. These are documents that have been released online by pro or anti-ISIS activists or information that was gathered and analyzed by research centers and international organizations. It is worth noting that non-officially released documents were very helpful in shedding more …

Rituals Reproducing Race: African American Women's Feminine Hygiene Practices, Shared Experiences, And Power, Angela K. Guy-Lee Jan 2017

Rituals Reproducing Race: African American Women's Feminine Hygiene Practices, Shared Experiences, And Power, Angela K. Guy-Lee

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation is an exploration of the role African American women’s feminine hygiene practices, namely vaginal douching, plays in the creation and reproduction of race. Compared to their white and Latina counterparts, African American women are the most likely to engage in this practice. Vaginal douching is associated with myriad reproductive and sexual health problems. These problems include but are not limited to recurrent yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, disrupting healthy vaginal microbiomes, and spontaneous preterm birth; of which African American women experience disproportionately. Although racial differences in vaginal douching are well documented, little is known about the impetus for African …

The Prevalence And Needs Of Homeless Undergraduates At A Large, Urban University, Corissa Carlson Jan 2017

The Prevalence And Needs Of Homeless Undergraduates At A Large, Urban University, Corissa Carlson

Wayne State University Dissertations

Empirical research has been limited with respect to homelessness among college undergraduates. Research on educational outcomes has been limited to K-12th grade, but what is known points to worse outcomes for people who are homeless. The National Coalition for the Homeless (2014) reported that 75% of homeless or runaway teenagers drop out of school. Furthermore, while federal funding though the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act has been able to help younger students, funding for homeless youth considering or attending college is minimal. Recently, some more attention has been given to this issue through the College Cost Reduction Access Act (CCRAA) which …

The Influence Of The Physical Workspace On Creative Performance: Alternative Mediation Models, Reed James Bramble Jan 2017

The Influence Of The Physical Workspace On Creative Performance: Alternative Mediation Models, Reed James Bramble

Wayne State University Theses

The present study assessed how individuals respond to stimuli in their immediate work environment. Specifically, I conducted a laboratory experiment with a student sample to test the influence of natural stimuli in the workspace on individuals’ creative performance. Additionally, I tested a series of potential mediating variables that could have driven the effect: state positive affect, state openness to experience, and self-regulation of effort. While the results indicated that the hypotheses were broadly unsupported, supplemental analyses revealed that the intervention significantly predicted effort regulation in a high-performing subgroup. Study limitations and recommendations for future directions are discussed.

The Relationship Of Assimilation On The Health Behaviors, Health Beliefs, And Use Of Health Care Services Of The Samoan Immigrants In The United States, Miliama Bracken Jan 2017

The Relationship Of Assimilation On The Health Behaviors, Health Beliefs, And Use Of Health Care Services Of The Samoan Immigrants In The United States, Miliama Bracken

Wayne State University Theses

This study accepts the null hypothesis that there is no relationship between assimilation and the health behaviors, health beliefs, and use of health care services of the Samoan immigrants in the United States. The target population included Samoans who immigrated from Samoa or American Samoa and were 18 or more years of age. A total of 150 questionnaires were distributed and 126 respondents were included in the study. The respondents were asked how often they visited the doctor during the year. Would they seek the help of a medical doctor if they were sick, or a Samoan healer? They were …

The Implementation Of Body Worn Cameras: Lessons Learned The Case Of Detroit Police Department, Toycia Collins Jan 2017

The Implementation Of Body Worn Cameras: Lessons Learned The Case Of Detroit Police Department, Toycia Collins

Wayne State University Theses

The level of mistrust between citizens and the police continues to have serious implications for police legitimacy. Police legitimacy is an important phenomenon that must be preserved, since it forms the very foundation of police authority. The intricates surrounding police/citizen mistrust is further compounded in this era of citizen journalism, where the increasing availability of cellphones and varying social media platforms, have given rise to the ability to share the captured footages with a wider audience. In 2014, then president, Barack Obama proposed a compromise to bridge the gap between citizens and the police. This compromise came in the form …

Trends In The Community Supervision Population Of The United States: An Analysis Of Race, Gender, And Region's Effect On Probation And Parole, Patricia Bynum Jan 2017

Trends In The Community Supervision Population Of The United States: An Analysis Of Race, Gender, And Region's Effect On Probation And Parole, Patricia Bynum

Wayne State University Theses

Past research noted that the community supervision population of the United States has grown at a rate comparable to the incarcerated population. The two-fold purpose of this study was to describe the trend of growth for the community supervision population of the United States at the state- and national-level from 1990-2010, and to quantitatively examine whether race, gender, or region influenced the ratio of individuals under community supervision over incarceration by state. Data were collected from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) database from four different publications for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Data were prepared in …

Advisor: Dr. Matthew Larson

Major: Criminal Justice

Degree: Master of Science

In recent years, sexting has become a controversial topic among legal scholars and behavioral scientists. Research has displayed varying accounts of the prevalence of sexting among young adults and has yet to answer the question of why. This study seeks to understand the characteristics and motivations of young adults who are involved in sexting. A survey of sexting behaviors was administered online at a large urban university. Identifying the factors and influences for a …

Mental Health Service Utilization Among At-Risk Urban Adolescents: The Relative Contributions Of Perceived Need, Attitude, And Spirituality/Religiosity, Yi Tak Tsang Jan 2017

Mental Health Service Utilization Among At-Risk Urban Adolescents: The Relative Contributions Of Perceived Need, Attitude, And Spirituality/Religiosity, Yi Tak Tsang

Wayne State University Theses

Adolescence has been described as “a time of storm and stress” (Arnett, 1999; Hall, 1904). In fact, a national survey in the United States estimated that adolescents were twice as likely than adults to report at least one major depressive episode in the past 12 months (Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality, 2016). In particular, adolescents who are poor, who belong to ethnic minority groups, and who live in urban neighborhoods are more vulnerable to mood and behavioral symptoms than their White/Caucasian counterparts who grow up in relatively affluent suburban and rural areas (Beyers, Bates, Pettit, & Dodge, 2003; …

An Empirical Demonstration Of The Need For Exact Tests, Vance W. Berger Jan 2017

An Empirical Demonstration Of The Need For Exact Tests, Vance W. Berger

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The robustness of parametric analyses is rarely questioned or qualified. Robustness, generally understood, means the exact and approximate p-values will lie on the same side of alpha for any reasonable data set; and 1) any data set would qualify as reasonable and 2) robustness holds universally, for all alpha levels and approximations. For this to be true, the approximation would need to be perfect all of the time. Any discrepancy between the approximation and the exact p-value, for any combination of alpha level and data set, would constitute a violation. Clearly, this is not true, and when confronted with this …

Use Of The Research Readiness Self-Assessment (Rrsa) To Evaluate Medical Students’ Competencies In Finding And Evaluating Online Health Information (Poster Presented At Mhsla Annual Conference), Katherine G. Akers, Laventra E. Danquah, Ella Hu, Sandra Martin, Wendy Wu, Patricia Vinson Jan 2017

Use Of The Research Readiness Self-Assessment (Rrsa) To Evaluate Medical Students’ Competencies In Finding And Evaluating Online Health Information (Poster Presented At Mhsla Annual Conference), Katherine G. Akers, Laventra E. Danquah, Ella Hu, Sandra Martin, Wendy Wu, Patricia Vinson

Library Scholarly Publications

To maintain awareness of current medical evidence and clinical practice guidelines in order to provide the best possible patient care, physicians must be able to locate, critically evaluate, synthesize, and make clinical decisions based on health information from multiple digital sources. Concerningly, however, medical students and junior doctors have been found to exhibit poor information literacy skills, including an inability to conduct efficient literature searches, find randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews, or evaluate study quality. Here, we describe our medical library’s experience in administering the Health version of the Research Readiness Self-Assessment (RRSA) tool to two cohorts of first-year …

Quality Evaluation Of Data Management Plans At A Research University, James E. Van Loon, Katherine G. Akers, Cole Hudson, Alexandra Sarkozy Jan 2017

Quality Evaluation Of Data Management Plans At A Research University, James E. Van Loon, Katherine G. Akers, Cole Hudson, Alexandra Sarkozy

Library Scholarly Publications

With the emergence of the National Science Foundation (NSF) requirement for data management plans (DMPs), academic librarians have increasingly aided researchers in developing DMPs and disseminating research data. To determine the overall quality of DMPs at Wayne State University, the Library System’s Research Data Services (RDS) team evaluated the content of 119 DMPs from NSF grant proposals submitted between 2012 and 2014. The results of our content analysis indicate that, while most researchers understand the need to share data, many DMPs fail to adequately describe the data generated by the project, how data will be managed during the project, or …

Phylogeny, Psychology, And The Vicissitudes Of Human Development: The Anxiety Of Atavism, Frank Pittenger Jan 2017

Phylogeny, Psychology, And The Vicissitudes Of Human Development: The Anxiety Of Atavism, Frank Pittenger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This cross-disciplinary dissertation provides a missing intellectual history of an ostensibly dead idea. Once widely held and no less elegant for its obsolescence, the principle of biogenetic recapitulation is best remembered by its defining mantra, “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny.” Among psychologists and sociologists as well as embryologists, the notion that the development of any individual organism repeats in compressed, miniaturized form the entire history of its species enjoyed broad (if not uncontested) acceptance through the early twentieth century. The author reexamines the origins of this theory in the work of Charles Darwin and Ernst Haeckel, and traces its influence in psychology …

Dialogic Praxes In Gabriel Marcel’S Philosophy: Hope For Being In A Technological World, Margaret M. Mullan Jan 2017

Dialogic Praxes In Gabriel Marcel’S Philosophy: Hope For Being In A Technological World, Margaret M. Mullan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In a technological age, communicators report conflicting experiences of presence and absence, connection and isolation. Dislocation, distraction, and disconnection present challenges for dialogue and reveal a world broken by technology. A world broken by technology invites a response. Philosopher Gabriel Marcel (1889-1973) offers insightful reflections on ways of being in a broken world. Marcel’s philosophical reflections on body, reflection, intersubjectivity, and technology form the primary content for this dissertation.

In Chapter One, Gabriel Marcel, philosopher, playwright, and international speaker, is introduced as participant in twentieth-century Paris, France. Marcel’s philosophy emerged in response to his societal, technological, and cultural contexts. Chapter …

Examining The Role Of Ethnic Identity In The Relationship Between Characteristics Of Autism Spectrum Disorders And Eating Disorders, Ashley Bojorquez Jan 2017

Examining The Role Of Ethnic Identity In The Relationship Between Characteristics Of Autism Spectrum Disorders And Eating Disorders, Ashley Bojorquez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present work provides a synthetic literature review investigating the potential role of ethnic identity in the relationship between Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and eating disorders (EDs). To date, there is no literature that directly examines the role that ethnic identity may play in the relationship between these two disorders. However, there is reason to believe it may; previous literature has shown that race/ethnicity plays a role in both of these disorders, and the role of ethnic identity has been more fully explored in the ED population. Notably, there is little research that examines the role of ethnic identity on …

Exploring The Concept Of Self-Creativity Through The Validation Of A New Survey Measure, Alexandra Danae Varela Jan 2017

Exploring The Concept Of Self-Creativity Through The Validation Of A New Survey Measure, Alexandra Danae Varela

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to validate a newly constructed instrument, the Creativity Assessment for the Malleability of Possible Selves (CAMPS) and, through that process, operationally define the newly developed construct of self-creativity. This dissertation utilizes three separate studies to validate the CAMPS and operationally define self-creativity, including samples intended to represent the general population (n = 199), professional counselors (n = 133), and exemplars of self-creativity (n = 13). Study 1 utilized an exploratory factor analysis for the initial item reduction and factor structure exploration, followed by testing convergent and discriminant validity utilizing established assessments …

The Role Of Sibling Configuration In Identity And Career Development, Alyssa Sullinger Jan 2017

The Role Of Sibling Configuration In Identity And Career Development, Alyssa Sullinger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This synthetic literature review examines the characteristics of sibling configurations— which refer to the ordinal position of siblings, age spacing, and sex composition—in a traditional family setting. A general review of the literature on sibling configurations and relationships is presented, and their potential roles in the development of personality traits, self-concept and identity, and career choices are explored. This synthesis describes how sibling birth rank is affiliated with generalized personality traits and likelihood of siblings with these traits identifying with corresponding career interest-types associated with Holland’s vocational theory. Suggestions for future research include empirical studies investigating these connections, such the …
