El “Gran Experimento” Del Socialismo Cubano: Los Retos Durante La Transición Económica, Hannah Bottum
El “Gran Experimento” Del Socialismo Cubano: Los Retos Durante La Transición Económica, Hannah Bottum
CMC Senior Theses

Developing Online Communities For Librarian Researchers: A Case Study, Lili Luo, Marie Kennedy, Kristine Brancolini, Michael Stephens
Faculty Publications
This study examines the role of online communities in connecting and supporting librarian researchers, through the analysis of member activities in the online community for academic librarians that attended the 2014 Institute for Research Design in Librarianship (IRDL). The 2014 IRDL cohort members participated in the online community via Twitter and a Facebook group page. A content analysis of their posts and an online survey among them identified different patterns of engagement and four primary types of content—posts related to completing the IRDL research project required for each cohort member, announcements about research-related resources and opportunities, posts reminiscing about the …
Xenophobia, Populism, And The Rise Of The Far-Right In France And Germany, Veda Elizabeth Beltran
Xenophobia, Populism, And The Rise Of The Far-Right In France And Germany, Veda Elizabeth Beltran
CMC Senior Theses
The purpose of this study is to further examine the populist wave that has struck the West, with specific regards to France and Germany. The growing anti-immigrant sentiment, the discontent with “establishment” politics, and fear-mongering tactics has given rise to far-right political parties such as the National Front and the Alternative for Germany. These political parties prove threatening to the democratic institutions in place, for they wish to limit the liberties of those who seem too different. Through delving into the core values of these countries and specific events revolving around foreigners, I explain how xenophobic ideology has been allowed …
Protecting The "Worst Of The Worst": The Constitutional Rights Of Non-Citizen Enemies In World War Ii And The War On Terror, Lane Hannah Corrigan
Protecting The "Worst Of The Worst": The Constitutional Rights Of Non-Citizen Enemies In World War Ii And The War On Terror, Lane Hannah Corrigan
CMC Senior Theses
After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, President Bush authorized the detention of certain non-citizens suspected of terrorism at the naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Beginning in 2004, the Supreme Court considered whether these non-citizens were entitled to rights under the Constitution. In deciding that question, the Court compared the facts in the War on Terror cases with World War II cases that dealt with the rights of captured Nazis. Though the cases from World War II denied all protections to nonresident enemies, the Court in 2004 and 2008 determined that detentions in Guantanamo were unique. As such, …

Racial And Ethnic Differences In Smoking Changes After Chronic Disease Diagnosis Among Middle-Aged And Older Adults In The United States, Ana R. Quinones, Corey L. Nagel, Jason T. Newsom, Nathalie Huguet, Paige Sheridan, Stephen M. Thielke
Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background
Middle-aged and older Americans from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds are at risk for greater chronic disease morbidity than their white counterparts. Cigarette smoking increases the severity of chronic illness, worsens physical functioning, and impairs the successful management of symptoms. As a result, it is important to understand whether smoking behaviors change after the onset of a chronic condition. We assessed the racial/ethnic differences in smoking behavior change after onset of chronic diseases among middle-aged and older adults in the US.
Methods
We use longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS 1992–2010) to examine changes in smoking …

Florida Public Health Review
The purpose of this study was to assess the state of chronic, non-cancer pain management education in Florida medical schools and residency programs. Surveys were developed and distributed to Florida allopathic and osteopathic medical schools. One survey was specific to students and residents and one to faculty. Confidence in their general education, as well as in treating patients with chronic, non-cancer pain, was measured. A majority of medical students and residents (59.5%), in addition to a majority of faculty (58.1%), agreed or strongly agree that more clinical time needs to be dedicated to chronic, non-cancer pain management education. Students, residents, …

Documenting Support For Ongoing And Improved Efforts In Sexuality Education, Elissa M. Barr, Michele J. Moore, Kristina Wilson, Tiffany L. Parisi, Heather M. Mccann
Florida Public Health Review
As debate regarding sexuality education continues, STD, HIV, and teen pregnancy rates remain high. Garnering support is critical to ensure quality programs addressing these public health concerns. As part of a funded project to reduce adolescent sexual health issues in a large Florida county, this study assessed voter support for specific sexuality education topics. A survey was developed after reviewing existing instruments. The university’s Public Opinion Research Laboratory used random-digit-dialing to administer the survey (N=311). Most participants supported topics taught in middle school: dealing with pressure to have sex (85%), talking to parents about sex (90%), human anatomy/reproduction (91%), HIV/STDs …

A Community-University Partnership To Improve Access To Fresh Produce Among Homebound Seniors, Lauri Wright, Lina Bracht, Lauren M. Vance, Cindy Vann, James B. Epps
Florida Public Health Review
Accessing fresh produce is often difficult for homebound seniors, leading to under-consumption and increased risk of chronic disease. Current Meals on Wheels (MOW) programs do not include fresh produce delivery. A MOW agency collaborated with a large non-profit university to design and evaluate the impact of a monthly produce delivery program to homebound seniors. The produce delivery program was systematically designed based on the constructs of the Health Belief Model. Quantitative and qualitative data was collected. The results of the monthly delivery of fresh produce to homebound seniors demonstrated an increased produce intake and increased perceived health value of fruits …

A Tricky One: Barriers To Non-Opioid Pain Management In University Healthcare, Alexandra C.H. Nowakowski, Kaitlyn E. Barningham, Charlyn D. Buford, Martin Laguerre, J. E. Sumerau
Florida Public Health Review
We explored palliation practices and experiences among providers at university campus health centers to assess the availability and viability of non-opioid options for student patients. We interviewed 10 healthcare providers at the campus health center for a large research university in the southeastern United States. Data were collected via semi- structured interviews. Analyses of interview transcripts were performed via content analysis with open coding. We identified multiple barriers to non-opioid pain management. Non-opioid modalities were more likely to receive no insurance subsidy, and thus, to go unused even if clinically indicated. Providers also reported high levels of concern with potential …
Updating Gender In Electronic Medical Records – A Commentary, Ben Andert
Updating Gender In Electronic Medical Records – A Commentary, Ben Andert
Florida Public Health Review
It is argued in this commentary that many patient intake and permanent medical record forms make archaic assumptions about use of the word "gender." A further argument is made for change that accounts for the needs of persons who do not readily identify as "male" or "female." Several suggestions for making such accommodations available are offered.

Florida Public Health Review
Therapists’ perceptions of school-based mental health programs are considered to be an important factor in determining the effectiveness of a school based behavioral health model. This qualitative evaluation summarizes the perceptions of participant therapists on two different behavioral health models called Full Service Schools (FSS) and Full-Service Schools (FSS) Plus model that are currently being implemented in a large school district in Florida. FSS therapists provide therapy at a hub location whereas FSS Plus therapists work at one particular school. The study utilizes therapists’ views of their respective programs to compare and contrast the effectiveness of each of the behavioral …

Fifty percent of middle schools and 35% of high schools in Hillsborough County, Florida, serve students at high-risk for teen birth and sexually transmitted infections. This study assessed the desired type of sexual health education (SHE), content, and support for SHE from residents in the districts. Descriptive and bivariate statistics were used to analyze 314 survey phone interviews with adults, and thematic analysis was used to analyze eight focus groups with 104 youth living in the high-risk school districts. Survey results showed strong community support for comprehensive SHE with human anatomy and reproduction and HIV and sexually transmitted disease as …
