Walk The Future Like A Landscape: Theorizing An Interdisciplinary Approach, Jeremy Mcginniss Jan 2017

Walk The Future Like A Landscape: Theorizing An Interdisciplinary Approach, Jeremy Mcginniss

Urban Library Journal

Locating the place of the academic library in the current socio-political, economic environment is a fraught task. Being able to visualize library function in the future is even more difficult. The three concepts of maintaining perspective, creating context and building connections serve to anchor this presentation. Informed by the writings of John Stilgoe, Keller Easterling, James Scott, and related library literature, this presentation locates these three concepts in two different metaphors. The first is that of a giant; the second that of the ant. These metaphorical views provide and are dependent upon perspective, context, and connection. Employing the giant and …

Rabbit Exploitation In The Middle Paleolithic At Gruta Nova Da Columbeira, Portugal, Milena M. Carvalho Jan 2017

Rabbit Exploitation In The Middle Paleolithic At Gruta Nova Da Columbeira, Portugal, Milena M. Carvalho

Anthropology Graduate Student Publications

Differences in subsistence between Neanderthals and anatomically modern humans may suggest key behavioral changes during the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition. In this paper, I present archeozoological and stable isotopic analyses of Oryctolagus cuniculus (European wild rabbit) remains from levels 6, 7, 8 and 9 of Gruta Nova da Columbeira, a Mousterian cave site located in central Portugal. I use these data to explore two alternative hypotheses: 1. Anatomically modern humans gained a competitive advantage over Neanderthals by exploiting a broader-spectrum diet including small prey items such as the rabbit and 2. Neanderthals already on occasion practiced a broad-spectrum diet …

First-line supervisors in U.S. retail organizations are unable to resolve nearly 34% of typical daily customer problems for their organizations. The purpose of this single-case study was to explore the strategies retail supermarket managers have used to improve first-line supervisor problem solving abilities within a retail supermarket company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with four retail store manager participants with a successful record of improving first-line supervisor problem solving abilities. Based on inductive data analysis and methodological triangulation of the data collected, four themes emerged after the data analysis: (a) the importance of communicating expectations …

They focused on the selection, integration and citation of scholarly articles in formal laboratory reports. The science librarian became embedded in the course, delivering information literacy instruction sessions, grading and providing feedback on the use of information sources in the lab reports. Overall the …

Student Research Posters

Food insecurity is defined as the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods. It can also be defined as the limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways. Previous research has observed that food insecurity can disrupt optimal development throughout the life cycle. A growing body of literature has documented the effects of food insecurity on cognitive, academic, and psychosocial development among college students. These studies consistently observed that food insecurity is associated with lower academic performance, poor health, and decreased psychosocial function. Among college students, financial hardship can translate into budget demands, …

Bohms Away! Lessons From A Collection Survey, Jessica E. Johnson, Margaret T. Kidd

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

VCU James Branch Cabell Library underwent a major renovation and expansion from 2014 to 2016, necessitating a move of all special collections and archives materials. After the move we surveyed our collections to help us regain intellectual and physical control. In addition, the survey allowed us to assess whether collections were in need of additional processing or reprocessing to make them more accessible physically and intellectually, identify special formats, and address conservation issues.

To conduct the survey, we created a form and used this in conjunction with the assessment tool in Archivists’ Toolkit. The form included checklists to note information …

Policymakers' Perceptions Of Oral Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Introduction In Tanzania: Findings From Implementation Science Research, Population Council

HIV and AIDS

There is limited evidence from Tanzania to inform decisionmaking on whether and how to introduce oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). To help fill this evidence gap, the Population Council in collaboration with the National AIDS Control Program and CSK Research Solutions Limited conducted implementation science research in one urban district (Dar es Salaam) and one rural district (Mbeya) in Tanzania to explore policymakers’ and key stakeholders’ perceptions and attitudes toward the introduction of PrEP to different groups, including AGYW, as well as to identify key issues that must be considered prior to its introduction. …

Servant-Leadership In Crisis: A Case Study Of The 2002 Evacuation Of The International Christian Academy In Cote D’Ivoire, Michael F. James

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Imagine, if you will, that you are at dinner with your family. After dinner, you sit at the table discussing the day s events with your wife and the sounds of gunshots ring out. You realize with a sinking feeling that the kids, as they often are after dinner, are outside playing. You run to the yard only to find it empty but alight with hundreds of tracers streaming overhead. Imagine your relief when, after a frantic search, you find your children huddled in the backyard or safe in a neighbor s home. You gather your family to wait out …
