Equine Assisted Learning With Special Populations, Hanna R. Baus
Equine Assisted Learning With Special Populations, Hanna R. Baus
Projects
This paper explores the use of equine-assisted learning (EAL) activities with special populations and includes a program evaluation for two equine-assisted learning programs developed and conducted by HeartStrides, a non-profit organization in the Pacific Northwest. The study included two populations (N=18); the at-risk youth program included seven participants and the veterans’ clinic included eleven participants. For the purpose of this study, the participating youth are considered “at-risk” due to their risk factors that include socioeconomic status, exposure to stressful and traumatic events (physical, sexual, and/or psychological abuse), neglect, dysfunctional parenting, substance abuse in the home, self-harming tendencies and/or suicidal thoughts …
Reintegration In A Rural Community: Strengths, Barriers, And Recommendations For Reentry In Humboldt County, Vanessa E. Vrtiak
Reintegration In A Rural Community: Strengths, Barriers, And Recommendations For Reentry In Humboldt County, Vanessa E. Vrtiak
Projects
There is a current lack of reintegration services in rural Humboldt County, California. In an effort to understand the services available, and develop recommendations for future reentry services, I conducted focus groups and interviews with the currently incarcerated, service providers, and the formerly incarcerated. Some of the formerly incarcerated participants live in Humboldt County currently, and some have moved to other communities in the state of California. This research was conducted using a convenience sample, and snow ball sampling methods. The initial goal of this research was to promote communication between both community based service providers and those involved in …

Can Understanding Phenomenology And Human Capabilities Help Us Address Acid Violence?, Bipasha Baruah
Data and Test Instruments
We draw on scholarly literature on the phenomenology of power and disability to understand both the impact of acid violence upon survivors’ lives and the motivations of perpetrators. We employ a human capabilities approach, espoused by prominent development theorists such as Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum, to propose policy responses and support systems based not solely on the provision of financial and material resources, but also on improving the social position of acid violence survivors. We show how engaging simultaneously with these frameworks will help move the political and philosophical discourse on acid violence forward and also enable us to …
Women’S Ngos As Intermediaries In Development Cooperation: Findings From Research In Tanzania, Bipasha Baruah
Women’S Ngos As Intermediaries In Development Cooperation: Findings From Research In Tanzania, Bipasha Baruah
Data and Test Instruments
This article employs research conducted with the Kivulini Women’s Rights Organization in Tanzania to discuss opportunities, constraints, and broader lessons about the role of women’s NGOs as intermediaries in development projects. Findings reveal that women’s NGOs often have insecure positions in development projects and are undervalued by executing agencies because advocating for gender equality is perceived as a “natural” extension of women’s roles in patriarchal societies. Women’s NGOs are “feminised” and consequently trivialised in their role as intermediaries, putting gender equality objectives at risk of attrition or abandonment. Under certain circumstances, women’s NGOs can be pushed out of partnership projects …

Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Projects
This Capstone Project sought to investigate and measure the process of social change in the community setting of a Christian church. A committee of stakeholders came together with a common passion to engage and integrate individuals of varying disabilities at all levels of church participation. As a new committee, stakeholders agreed to use the cyclical process of Participatory Action Research (PAR) to guide them in creating an action plan for promoting this congregational change. The occupational therapist served on the committee as both a co-facilitator and researcher.
While the primary purpose of the project was to objectively measure the degree …

Prescription Opioids: A Band-Aid For Chronic Low Back Pain, Rebekah Dunn
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
Pain is one of the most common reasons patients seek medical care in the outpatient clinic and emergency department setting.
• In the last decade, per the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), prescription drug abuse and overdose, specifically opioids, has become the leading cause of injury and deaths in the United States.
• “Opioids—primarily prescription pain relievers and heroin—are the main driver of overdose deaths and were involved in 28,647 deaths in 2014…opioid overdoses have quadrupled (an increase of 200%) since 2000” (Rudd et al. 2016).
• In 2016 the CDC established guidelines of clinical practice regarding management of …

We Are All Teachers: A Collaborative Approach To Digital Collection Development, Melanie Shell-Weiss, Annie Benefiel, Kimberly Mckee
Scholarship and Professional Work
In libraries and archives, efforts to document underrepresented communities and diversify collections can be fraught with political tension. We explore an interdepartmental collaboration to create and preserve a digital collection documenting the Urban Native Relocation Program of the mid- to late-twentieth century in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Involving the Grand Valley State University Libraries, the Kutsche Office of Local History, and the university’s Native American Advisory Board, the project serves as a model not just for collaborative collection development but also for community engagement and outreach. We find that process is as important as product in developing collaborative digital collections.
Understanding The Jobs-Affordable Housing Balance In The Richmond Region, Thomas Jacobson, I-Shian Suen, Mike Mackenzie, Fabrizio Fasulo
Understanding The Jobs-Affordable Housing Balance In The Richmond Region, Thomas Jacobson, I-Shian Suen, Mike Mackenzie, Fabrizio Fasulo
L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications
The mismatch between location of jobs and housing has a significant impact on the efficiency and quality of life within metropolitan areas. A well-planned region strives to be a “community of short distances.” A wide range of housing choices located close to employment centers could shorten commuting distances and substantially reduce government outlays for transportation facilities, reduce household transportation expenses, and increase feasibility of pedestrian movement. These needs are particularly important to families earning modest wages.
CURA, with support from The Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia and the Richmond Association of Realtors, has analyzed the spatial pattern of …

The violence and insecurity that Mexico suffered during formerPresident Calderon’s war on the Mexican drug cartels havecome at a grave economic cost to many cities. The criminalviolence had an impact on interdependent borderlands, whichare geographic areas that have a symbiotic link between citiesand communities of adjoining territories. Mexican businesspeople and consumers that live in cities along the sharedborder with the United States have the ability to shift theireconomic transactions away from their insecure environmentsand to US border communities. In addition, US residents thatwould normally travel south for economic transactions woulddecide to avoid violent areas and therefore conduct businesson the northern …

The Social Causes And Political Consequences Of Group Empathy, Cigdem Sirin, Nicholas Valentino, José Villalobos
Selected Works Temporary Series
Recent scholarship has discovered significant racial/ethnic group variation in response to political threats suchas immigration and terrorism. Surprisingly, minority groups often simultaneously perceive themselves to be atgreater risk from such threats and yet still prefer more open immigration policies and civil libertiesprotections. We suggest a group-level empathy process may explain this puzzle: Due to their higher levels ofempathy for other disadvantaged groups, many minority group members support protections for others evenwhen their own interests are threatened. Little is known, however, about the unique properties of groupempathy or its role in policy opinion formation. In this study, we examine the reliability …

Career Plateauing Among Senior Librarians., Tina M. Neville, Deborah B. Henry
USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications
Using an online survey and semi-structured interviews, senior academic librarians were asked to reflect on the factors that keep them personally fulfilled and on how they remain motivated to make positive contributions to their organization. Motivations include esteem of colleagues and supervisors, variety in their work, salary, opportunities to learn new skills, increasing responsibility, and working with students and faculty. 59% percent of the survey respondents ranked their job satisfaction at 8 (on a scale of 1—10, with 10 the most satisfied). Using Bardwick’s definitions of plateauing, 60% of the 20 librarians interviewed did not feel that they were content-plateaued.

Leonard was forced to join the military at the age of 17 in his home country of the Congo. A Catholic priest smuggled me out of the country and I lived in refugee camps in several different countries until 2004 when he came to the United States.
In 2005, a couple came to Leonard when he was homeless in the Provo library. They found out that he needed help and offered to let me live with them. They ended up paying my tuition for my education and I went to college for five years.

Interface Design For The Supervisory Control Of Multiple Heterogeneous Unmanned Vehicles, Kyle Joseph Behymer
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
In order to meet the demand for enabling one operator to control multiple heterogeneous unmanned vehicles numerous automated support systems are being developed. These systems are too often focused on replacing, rather than supporting, the human decision maker. In contrast, the Intelligent Multi-UxV Planner with Adaptive Collaborative/Control Technologies (IMPACT) system was designed from a collaborative systems approach that allowed human operators to work with autonomous systems to accomplish mission tasks. Multiple cognitive task analyses were conducted with base defense experts as well as unmanned vehicles (UV) operators to inform the development of human-autonomy interfaces (HAI) that were designed to support …

When Depression Is In The Job Description #Realacademicbios, Bernadette Marie Calafell
Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Faculty Scholarship
Inspired by H. L. Goodall Jr.'s and Barabara J. Jago's respective essays on academic culture and depression, this piece utilizes performative writing to flesh out the popular hashtag #realacademicbios. Drawing on my experiences as a queer faculty of color in the neoliberal academy going through racial battle fatigue, microaggressions, anti-feminist/anti-intersectional critiques, and imposter syndrome, I seek to affectively create a state of depression on the page.

A Study Of The Influence Of Branded Messages On Non-Branded Food Items When Presented To 10 To 14-Year-Old Children, Cassandra J. Chinn
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Children are more likely to create bonds with foods based on the environmental, socioeconomic and familial influences in their lives during early development stages. They gravitate to foods that are familiar to them and that are positioned with familiarity, creating an opportunity for branded food items to create more of a space in their psyche as part of their identity. Current research looks to reposition those energy-dense foods (commodity vegetables) that can often times be left unbranded, to see if immediate interest in the food items changes. Results found no significance to confirm nor deny a positive correlation in interest …
