The Influence Of Classroom Cell Phone Policies On Instructor Credibility, Nicholas Tatum Jan 2017

The Influence Of Classroom Cell Phone Policies On Instructor Credibility, Nicholas Tatum

Communication and Sociology

Considering the growth of cell phone usage in the classroom, instructors often attempt to regulate student behavior through specific technology policies in their syllabi. However, research offers little explanation regarding the influence of policies that try to restrict cell phone usage on perceptions of instructor credibility. Using the social influence (SI) model of technology use as a sensitizing lens, results from this study (N = 206) demonstrated that policies encouraging the use of cell phones for instructional purposes resulted in significantly greater student perceptions of instructor credibility than policies discouraging the use of cell phones for noninstructional (i.e. social) purposes.

GSCE Faculty Publications

The Brazilian Tropical Moist Forest Biome (BTMFB) spans almost 4 million km2 and is subject to extensive annual fires that have been categorized into deforestation, maintenance, and forest fire types. Information on fire types is important as they have different atmospheric emissions and ecological impacts. A supervised classification methodology is presented to classify the fire type of MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) active fire detections using training data defined by consideration of Brazilian government forest monitoring program annual land cover maps, and using predictor variables concerned with fuel flammability, fuel load, fire behavior, fire seasonality, fire annual frequency, proximity …

Speed Accuracy In Motor Performance And Risk-Taking Characteristics, Morgan Lee Gabbert Jan 2017

Speed Accuracy In Motor Performance And Risk-Taking Characteristics, Morgan Lee Gabbert

ETD Archive

Past research has led to the conclusion, through studies of the speed-accuracy trade-off, that there is a natural covariance between speed and accuracy within individuals on movement tasks (Adam, 1992). In this study, we investigated the relationship between the speed-accuracy continuum and risk-taking personality characteristics. In order to investigate the hypotheses, the study used a Fitts’ cyclical aiming task in which participants moved a mouse between two targets that were at various widths and amplitudes. The various widths and amplitudes included 15 unique combinations of movement measurements, which were compared to two measures of risk-taking. These were the Investment Risk …

Community Safety, Social Cohesion And Embedded Autonomy: A Case From South-West Dublin, Matt Bowden Jan 2017

Community Safety, Social Cohesion And Embedded Autonomy: A Case From South-West Dublin, Matt Bowden

Articles

The article provides a case of community safety based upon an evaluative study of an community safety intervention in the south-west Dublin suburb of Tallaght. Characteristic of the Irish context for crime prevention and community safety has been the ad hoc nature of policy formation and the underdeveloped structures for urban security. The case is based primarily upon qualitative data from interviews and focus groups with key stakeholders, together with some additional observations from a household survey. The key themes centre on the way safety manifests from issues related to social integration in the pilot communities; the impact, capacity and …

Recognising Birth Children As Social Actors In The Foster-Care Process: Retrospective Accounts From Biological Children Of Foster-Carers In Ireland, David Williams Jan 2017

Recognising Birth Children As Social Actors In The Foster-Care Process: Retrospective Accounts From Biological Children Of Foster-Carers In Ireland, David Williams

Articles

While a wealth of literature exists on the topic of fostering, limited research has been published on the experiences of the biological children of foster-carers (Younes and Harp, 2007; Sutton and Stack, 2013). Literature that exists identifies increased recognition of the importance of birth children’s contribution to successful foster-care placements and the prevention of placement breakdown (Kalland and Sinkonnen, 2001; Hojer et al., 2013). This paper reports findings from an interpretivist study that explored the retrospective experiences of fifteen adult birth children of foster-carers (aged between eighteen and twenty-eight years) in Ireland. Using semi-structured interviews, birth children’s experiences of fostering …

Social Class Tensions, Habitus And The Advertising Of Guinness, John Connolly, Paddy Dolan Jan 2017

Social Class Tensions, Habitus And The Advertising Of Guinness, John Connolly, Paddy Dolan

Articles

Drawing from an Eliasian perspective we examine how an ‘advertising subjectivity’ became more firmly embedded within the bourgeois habitus. We explain how and why advertising slowly developed and expanded within a commercial organization despite initial opposition, ambivalence and even hostility from some of its bourgeois senior management towards the practice – the very social class sometimes identified with advertising’s origins and advance. Our empirical case is based on Arthur Guinness & Sons Ltd, the Irish company which came to be renowned for the alcohol beverage which carried its name – Guinness stout. We explain how the development of advertising was …

Habitus, The Writings Of Irish Hunger Strikers And Elias's The Loneliness Of The Dying, John Connolly, Paddy Dolan

Articles

»Habitus, die Texte der irischen Hungerstreikenden und Elias', Die Einsamkeit der Sterbenden'«. Elias maintained that over the course of several centuries death has become associated with greater shame and embarrassment feelings due mainly to four interwoven processes. In this paper we consider how these specific processes or 'special conditions' Elias referred to, in conjunction with other processes, shaped the experience of dying and the image of death for twentieth century Irish hunger strikers.

Mentoring At-Risk Middle School Students To Reduce Communication Apprehension, Kevin Jones, Claire H. Procopio

Faculty Publications - Department of Communication and Cinematic Arts

Research has demonstrated the efficacy of mentoring at-risk students in a number of fields from physical education to math and science. While separate research has found that many atrisk students lack effective communication skills, little research has explored the potential of communication mentoring in improving at-risk students’ communication efficacy. In our study, we examined the effectiveness of communication majors in a senior capstone course mentoring at-risk middle school students. Mentors were assigned a protégé and were required to design a curriculum targeting specific communication apprehension concerns identified in each student and implement the curriculum over a 10-week period. Gesture Enhances Learning Of A Complex Statistical Concept, Linda Rueckert, Ruth Breckinridge Church, Andrea Avila, Theresa Trejo

Psychology & Gerontology Faculty Publications

Prior research has shown that gestures that co-occur with speech can improve understanding of abstract concepts by embodying the underlying meaning of those concepts, thereby making them more accessible to the listener. The present study examined the effect of gesture on undergraduate students’ learning of a complex statistical concept (analysis of variance; ANOVA). Students in three classes watched a brief video in which the speaker explained the conceptual background of ANOVA while using gesture and students in three other classes saw a similar video with the same speech, but no gesture. Students who saw the gesture learned significantly more, as …
