Re-Thinking Anxiety: Using Inoculation Messages To Reduce And Reinterpret Public Speaking Fears, Ben Jackson, Josh Compton, Ashleigh L. Thornton, James A. Dimmock
Dartmouth Scholarship
Inoculation theory offers a framework for protecting individuals against challenges to an existing attitude, belief, or state. Despite the prevalence and damaging effects of public speaking anxiety, inoculation strategies have yet to be used to help individuals remain calm before and during public speaking. We aimed to test the effectiveness of an inoculation message for reducing the onset of public speaking anxiety, and helping presenters interpret their speech-related anxiety more positively. Participants (Mage = 20.14, SD = 2.72) received either an inoculation (n = 102) or control (n = 128) message prior to engaging a public …

Webinar: Improving Walkability At Signalized Intersections With Signal Control Strategies, Edward J. Smaglik, Sirisha Murthy Kothuri
TREC Webinar Series
The goal of signal timing at an intersection should be to maximize efficiency for all users. In many jurisdictions, however, traffic signals are timed mostly with the goal of reducing vehicular delay.
Other road users, such as pedestrians, deserve similar focus. In legacy transportation systems, pedestrians experience delays much in excess of those that would be deemed acceptable for a motor vehicle at the same location.
Excessive delay can lead to pedestrian frustration, non-compliance and ultimately decreased safety.
In the North American context, implementation of strategies to address pedestrian service varies greatly across jurisdictions, and there has been limited research …

The Role Of Maritime Transport Sector From The Perspective Of Energy And Gender: The Case Of South Pacific, Momoko Kitada Prof., Ore O. Toua
MARENER 2017
This paper discusses sustainable use of energy from a feminist perspective and focuses on the role of maritime transport sector in terms of energy access for rural women as users of maritime transport. In many parts of the world, the priorities of energy use tend to be gendered. Women are often excluded from decision-making process of energy choice and access. In the South Pacific where adequate recycling facilities and markets are not easily accessible, wastes are a big concern for their environments. An emerging concept of 'circular economy' to closing the loop of product life-cycles poses a challenge but also …
The Influence Of Emotions On Our Shopping Habits, Kesha Lewis
The Influence Of Emotions On Our Shopping Habits, Kesha Lewis
Siegel Institute Ethics Research Scholars
Different emotions affect people in various ways, and along with that come multiple coping methods. A common coping method is often referred to as retail therapy. This research study aims to discover how emotions impact our shopping habits. Do more people shop when exhibiting a negative emotion, such as stress or sadness, or a positive emotion, like happy and excited? Is there a difference in attitude about shopping and the use of retail therapy among males and females? To answer these questions, participants are asked to complete a survey detailing their most recent purchases, and the emotions they were experiencing …

The Anchor, Volume 130.14: January 25, 2017, Hope College
The Anchor: 2017
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
