This research aims to describe multi-layered oppressions experienced by Chinese-Indonesian women as some of them became the victims of mass rape in 1998 Tragedy in Jakarta. There are only few studies discussing violence against Chinese-Indonesian in 1998 Tragedy and amongst them, only few come up with the focus on violence against Chinese-Indonesian women issues (e.g. Purdey 2013; Siegel 1998; Tadié 2009). Several researchers such as Heryanto (2000) and Wichelen (2000) have tried to investigate the tragedy; however their studies only cover sole aspect of the issue which is state violence and gender. Using qualitative methods of document examinations and literature …

Perubahan Dan Kesinambungan Kebijakan-Kebijakan Ekonomi Makro: Kasus Indonesia Dan Malaysia Tahun 1997-1999, Syamsul Bahri

To respond the Asian financial crisis in 1997-1999, the governments of Indonesia and Malaysia took different measures to their macroeconomic policies. The government of Indonesia tightened their fiscal and monetary policies, discontinued their intervention in foreign exchange market, and liberalized various sectors of economics while the government of Malaysia adopted expansive monetary and fiscal policies, continued their intervention in foreign exchange market, and controlled capital flows. Why was the same crisis responded by different macroeconomic policies? Why did the crisis lead to liberalized macroeconomic policies change in Indonesia, but the same thing did not happen in Malaysia? Previous studies have …
Kekalahan Cambodia People’S Party Di Wilayah Urban Kamboja Pada Pemilu Tahun 2013, Farizan Fajari
Kekalahan Cambodia People’S Party Di Wilayah Urban Kamboja Pada Pemilu Tahun 2013, Farizan Fajari
Jurnal Politik
Cambodia is one of the countries that implements electoral authoritarianism system. This condition is misused by the ruling party, the Cambodia People’s Party or CPP, as the means to dominate the parliament until the 2008 election. However, the political party power distribution in Cambodia has undergone drastical change in the 2013 election. In this election, the CPP seats decreased significantly, which was the worst result for CPP since the 1998 election. The decrease was mainly caused by the failure of CPP to enchant the voters in four urban areas with high proportion of seats in parliament: Kampong Cham, Pnom Penh, …

Pengaruh Institusi Regional Terhadap Konvergensi Kebijakan Antarnegara: Studi Kasus Asean Open Skies, Dea Malinda Azalia
Jurnal Politik
This article analyzes the effect of regional economic integration on cross-national policy through the ASEAN Open Skies treaty, particularly in Indonesia, Philippines, and Singapore. This qualitative research applies the concepts of intergovernmentalist-supranationalist regional institution and causal-mechanism that lead to cross-national policy convergence. I argue that ASEAN regionalism as an intergovernmentalist institution affects the process of policymaking, the implementation of ASEAN Open Skies in the regional level, and the adoption of it in the domestic level. The process of international harmonization and transnational communication (transnational problem solving) during the arrangement of the air transport cooperation frameworks in ASEAN has made the …

This paper studies the effects of exempt treatment of financial services under a VATsystem. We develop a general equilibrium model with elastic labor supply, endogenous entry, anda banking sector. The banking sector provides loan services to producers and payment servicesto consumers. Our model display three key distortions under exempt treatment: (i) self-supplybias in the banking sector, (ii) consumption distortions, (iii) input distortions and tax cascading. Then, we calibrate our model to match the salient features of the tax system EU countries. Atax neutral policy regime switch from exempt treatment to full-taxation in loan services improveswelfare about 4%. Shutting down the entry …
The Challenge Of Protecting Transit And Passenger Rail: Understanding How Security Works Against Terrorism, Brian Michael Jenkins
The Challenge Of Protecting Transit And Passenger Rail: Understanding How Security Works Against Terrorism, Brian Michael Jenkins
Mineta Transportation Institute
Terrorists see transit and passenger rail as an attractive target. Designed for public convenience, trains and stations offer terrorists easy access to crowds of people in confined environments where there are minimal security risks and attacks can cause high casualties. This report examines the unique attributes of the terrorist threat, how security measures against terrorism have evolved over the years, and their overall effectiveness.
Does security work? Empirical evidence is hard to come by. Terrorist incidents are statistically rare and random, making it difficult to discern effects. The fact that terrorists focus most of their attacks on targets with little …

A Comparative Analysis Of High-Speed Rail Station Development Into Destination And Multi-Use Facilities: The Case Of San Jose Diridon, Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, Deike Peters, Paige Colton, Eric Eidlin
Mineta Transportation Institute
As a burgeoning literature on high-speed rail development indicates, good station-area planning is a very important prerequisite for the eventual successful operation of a high-speed rail station; it can also trigger opportunities for economic development in the station area and the station-city. At the same time, “on the ground” experiences from international examples of high-speed rail stations can provide valuable lessons for the California high-speed rail system in general, and the San Jose Diridon station in particular. This study identifies and draws lessons from European HSR stations that share similarities across several criteria with the San Jose area context. From …
Bike Route Choice Modeling Using Gps Data Without Choice Sets Of Paths, Maëlle Zimmermann, Tien Mai, Emma Frejinger
Bike Route Choice Modeling Using Gps Data Without Choice Sets Of Paths, Maëlle Zimmermann, Tien Mai, Emma Frejinger
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Concerned by the nuisances of motorized travel on urban life, policy makers are faced with the challenge of making cycling a more attractive alternative for everyday transportation. Route choice models can help achieve this objective by gaining insights into the trade-offs cyclists make when choosing their routes and by allowing the effect of infrastructure improvements to be analyzed. We estimate a link-based bike route choice model from a sample of GPS observations in the city of Eugene on a network comprising over 40,000 links. The so-called recursive logit (RL) model (Fosgerau et al., 2013) does not require to sample any …

Development Of A Synchronization Coefficient For Biosocial Interactions In Groups And Teams, Stephen J. Guastello, Anthony F. Peressini
Development Of A Synchronization Coefficient For Biosocial Interactions In Groups And Teams, Stephen J. Guastello, Anthony F. Peressini
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Body movements, autonomic arousal, and electroencephalograms (EEGs) of group members are often coordinated or synchronized with those of other group members. Linear and nonlinear measures of synchronization have been developed for pairs of individuals, but little work has been done on measures of synchronization for groups. We define a new synchronization coefficient, SE, for a group based on pairwise correlations in time series data and employing the notions of a group driver, who most drives the group’s responses, and empath, who is most driven by the group. SE is developed here in the context of …

Harnessing Twitter To Support Serendipitous Learning Of Developers, Abhabhisheksh Sharma, Yuan Tian, Agus Sulistya, David Lo, Aiko Yamashita
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Developers often rely on various online resources, such as blogs, to keep themselves up-to-date with the fast pace at which software technologies are evolving. Singer et al. found that developers tend to use channels such as Twitter to keep themselves updated and support learning, often in an undirected or serendipitous way, coming across things that they may not apply presently, but which should be helpful in supporting their developer activities in future. However, identifying relevant and useful articles among the millions of pieces of information shared on Twitter is a non-trivial task. In this work to support serendipitous discovery of …

The K-Sf-42: A New Short Form Of The Arizona Life History Battery, Aurelio José Figueredo, Rafael Antonio Garcia, J Michael Menke, Norman P. Li
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The purpose of the present article is to propose an alternative short form for the 199-item Arizona Life History Battery (ALHB), which we are calling the K-SF-42, as it contains 42 items as compared with the 20 items of the Mini-K, the short form that has been in greatest use for the past decade. These 42 items were selected from the ALHB, unlike those of the Mini-K, making direct comparisons of the relative psychometric performance of the two alternative short forms a valid and instructive exercise. A series of secondary data analyses were performed upon a recently completed five-nation cross- …

Labour Protection For The Vulnerable: An Evaluation Of The Salary And Injury Claims System For Migrant Workers In Singapore, Tamera Fillinger, Nicholas Harrigan, Stephanie Chok, Amirah Amirrudin, Patricia Meyer, Meera Rajah, Debbie Fordyce
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This research seeks to review and analyze the protections afforded to migrant workers in Singapore who bring salary and injury claims to the Ministry of Manpower for resolution. Our focus is male Work Permit holders from Bangladesh, China, and India who make up the majority of the workforce in Singapore’s construction and marine sectors. Work Permit holders are the lowest wage category of foreign workers and comprise nearly a third of the overall workforce. While these workers play an important role in building the nation, they face workplace issues that many would not associate with a modern economy.
Going Green In Thailand: Upgrading In Global Organic Value Chains, John A. Donaldson, Joel D. Moore
Going Green In Thailand: Upgrading In Global Organic Value Chains, John A. Donaldson, Joel D. Moore
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Under what conditions are small-scale farmers able to overcome significant barriers to shift into producing organic rice? In a global context, the answers are vital. Rice – as with other staple goods – in many areas of the developing world has become dependent on chemical fertilizers, causing rapid deterioration in the natural environment. Rice grown with chemical fertilizers is less safe to consume. While the global environmental imperative justifies conversion (or in most cases, reconversion) to the production of organic (or at least safer) rice, the local impact of the overuse of chemical fertilizers is just as crucial. Chemical fertilizers …

Culturally And Linguistically Humble: A Preparation For Living Abroad, Diana Gonzalez
Northwestern Review
Presented in 2016 at Baekseok University in Cheonan City, South Korea at the 8th international conference of the International Association for the Promotion of Christian Higher Education (IAPCHE), this paper lays out the rationale for the approach taken in Northwestern College’s required preparations for students studying abroad. Elements in the preparation include getting students to identify influences on them of their home culture; to talk about their motivations and goals for studying abroad; to engage with Duane Elmer’s Cross-Cultural Connections and David Smith’s Learning from the Stranger; and perhaps most importantly, to engage with E. Hockett, L. Samek, …
Power, Liberalism, And Political Science: Some Christian Reflections, Daniel E. Young
Power, Liberalism, And Political Science: Some Christian Reflections, Daniel E. Young
Northwestern Review
How should a Christian political scientist think about power, liberalism, and political science? In answering this question, this article first defines power. Considered primarily in relation to the state, power is exercised in conflicts of interests: by officials, parties, or groups or elites getting others to do something the others would not otherwise do, or keeping one or more alternative from even being discussed, and perhaps obscuring what the real interests of others are. Then the argument turns to establishing that how one thinks about power is closely related to one’s larger political theory, e.g., what counts as the “real …

Design And Facilitation Of Problem-Based Learning In Graduate Teacher Education: An Ma Tesol Case, Cynthia Ann Caswell
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
This exploratory, evaluative case study introduces a new context for problem-based learning (PBL) involving an iterative, modular approach to curriculum-wide delivery of PBL in an MA TESOL program. The introduction to the curriculum context provides an overview of the design and delivery features particular to the situation. The delivery approach has established multiple roles that contribute to the design and facilitation of the learning environment: lead instructors, collaborating instructors, and students as peer teachers. These roles also identify milestones on a collaborative instructional skills trajectory for professional development. In this mixed methods study, qualitative data were collected from collaborating instructors …

Can My Wife Be Virtual-Adulterous? An Experiential Study On Facebook, Emotional Infidelity And Self-Disclosure, Okorie Nelson, Abiodun Salawu
Journal of International Women's Studies
Emotional infidelity is a perennial concern and negatively affects marriages in many modern societies. The advent of social media networks has heightened the alarming rate of emotional infidelity across the globe. This study examines the influence of Facebook on emotional infidelity and self-disclosure among married women. The study uses the media dependency theory, which stipulates that social media platforms, such as Facebook, serve as a potent channel for self-disclosure and emotional infidelity among individuals. The survey method was adopted in the study and a questionnaire used as an instrument to collect data. Two null hypotheses were tested with Pearson product …
Globalization As A Racial Project: Implications For Human Trafficking, Sarah Hupp Williamson
Globalization As A Racial Project: Implications For Human Trafficking, Sarah Hupp Williamson
Journal of International Women's Studies
This essay considers the potential impact of viewing globalization as a racial project in relation to human trafficking. Through an examination of a wide variety of scholarly sources and the work of Omi and Winant (2015), this essay presents the argument that globalization itself is a racial project by tracing how race is interwoven with the processes of globalization. It then asserts the implications this conceptualization of globalization has for human trafficking, and particularly anti-trafficking efforts. Finally, it argues for the power of using such a conceptual framework and suggests the incorporation of a critical globalization perspective for future studies …

Examining Equity In Tenure Processes At Higher Education Music Programs: An Institutional Ethnography, Deborah Bradley, Deanna Yerichuk, Lori-Anne Dolloff, Kiera Galway, Kathy M. Robinson, Jody Stark, Elizabeth Gould
Music Faculty Publications
As part of a larger mixed-methods study, this article presents findings from research on processes of tenure in Canadian higher education music faculties. The Principle Investigator and three teams of two researchers analyzed the process of tenure at three Canadian institutions to gain insight into how tenure decisions are made in relation to gender and race/ethnicity. The researchers used institutional ethnography, developed by sociologist Dorothy Smith, to examine institutional documents that organize tenure, as well as how documents organize people’s actions, studied through interviews with key stakeholders, such as directors, tenure applicants, and union representatives. The findings from the three …
