Thresholds Of Atrocity: Liberal Violence And The Politics Of Moral Vision, Kristofer J. Petersen-Overton
Thresholds Of Atrocity: Liberal Violence And The Politics Of Moral Vision, Kristofer J. Petersen-Overton
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
All political communities set normative limits to the acceptable use of force. A threshold of atrocity indicates the point at which acceptable violence meets the boundaries of the unacceptable. In liberal democratic states such norms are ostensibly set higher. Hence, there is a theoretical threshold to the modern state’s ability to act in ways that violate norms it claims to uphold. Paradoxically, thresholds of atrocity are almost never breached and unconscionable violence occurs regularly. This study seeks to explain the persistence of extreme violence by developing a theory of atrocity grounded in moral vision. Liberal democratic nation-states are able to …

Applying Motivational Interviewing To Parenting Act Mediation: The Promise Of The Process., Kristen M. Blankley, Lisa M. Pytlikzillig, Kathryn Speck
Applying Motivational Interviewing To Parenting Act Mediation: The Promise Of The Process., Kristen M. Blankley, Lisa M. Pytlikzillig, Kathryn Speck

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a research-based method of helping people engage in behavior change. MI tools and strategies have been used successfully to help people tackle drug and alcohol addiction, weight loss, and other unhealthy behaviors. MI methods aim to uncover and support a person's desire to change while simultaneously respecting an individual's autonomy. Historically, Ml has been employed in support settings, such as counselors working with clients. In Nebraska, probation officers now employ MI practices to help encourage positive changes while still maintaining accountability if people choose not to follow the terms of their probation.

Beyond Inclusion: Critical Race Theory And Participatory Budgeting, Celina Su
Beyond Inclusion: Critical Race Theory And Participatory Budgeting, Celina Su
Publications and Research
Critical Race Theory (CRT) researchers maintain that mainstream liberal discourses of neutrality and colorblindness inherently reify existing patterns of inequality, and that privileging the voices of people of color and the marginalized is essential to addressing issues of equity and equality. Participatory budgeting (PB) aims, too, to include the voices of the marginalized in substantive policy-making. Through a CRT lens, I examine the ways in which the New York City PB process has thus far worked to simultaneously disrupt and maintain racial hierarchies. I pay particular attention to how social constructions of the “good project” shape the discourses around community …

Psychology Faculty Research
Negative biases in cognition have been documented consistently in major depressive disorder (MDD), including difficulties in the ability to control the processing of negative material. Although negative information-processing biases have been studied using both behavioral and neuroimaging paradigms, relatively little research has been conducted examining the difficulties of depressed persons with inhibiting the retrieval of negative information from long-term memory. In this study, we used the think/no-think paradigm and functional magnetic resonance imaging to assess the cognitive and neural consequences of memory suppression in individuals diagnosed with depression and in healthy controls. The participants showed typical behavioral forgetting effects, but …

Discovering Burst Patterns Of Burst Topic In Twitter, Guozhong Dong, Wu Yang, Feida Zhu, Wei Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Twitter has become one of largest social networks for users to broadcast burst topics. There have been many studies on how to detect burst topics. However, mining burst patterns in burst topics has not been solved by the existing works. In this paper, we investigate the problem of mining burst patterns of burst topic in Twitter. A burst topic user graph model is proposed, which can represent the topology structure of burst topic propagation across a large number of Twitter users. Based on the model, hierarchical clustering is applied to cluster burst topics and reveal burst patterns from the macro …
Dynamic Repositioning To Reduce Lost Demand In Bike Sharing Systems, Supriyo Ghosh, Pradeep Varakantham, Yossiri Adulyasak, Patrick Jaillet
Dynamic Repositioning To Reduce Lost Demand In Bike Sharing Systems, Supriyo Ghosh, Pradeep Varakantham, Yossiri Adulyasak, Patrick Jaillet
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Bike Sharing Systems (BSSs) are widely adopted in major cities of the world due to concerns associated with extensive private vehicle usage, namely, increased carbon emissions, traffic congestion and usage of nonrenewable resources. In a BSS, base stations are strategically placed throughout a city and each station is stocked with a pre-determined number of bikes at the beginning of the day. Customers hire the bikes from one station and return them at another station. Due to unpredictable movements of customers hiring bikes, there is either congestion (more than required) or starvation (fewer than required) of bikes at base stations. Existing …
An Examination Of The 16pf Demographic Variables As Predictors Of The Scale For Accurate Personality Prediction (Sapp), Jack Dorian Bartel
An Examination Of The 16pf Demographic Variables As Predictors Of The Scale For Accurate Personality Prediction (Sapp), Jack Dorian Bartel
Theses and Dissertations
The Scale of Accurate Personality Prediction (SAPP) was first developed in 2000 by Miller. Its principal purpose is to serve as a measure of one’s ability to accurately predict his or her personality traits, and as such, potentially reflect the level of one’s self-knowledge. The measure is derived from the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF). The purpose of the current study was to follow up on a recent attempt to identify the best predictors of the SAPP using the 16 primary factors of the 16PF (Mazur, 2013). This study focuses on certain demographics to determine their potential ability to predict …
Approaching Cyber Warfare: Geopolitics, Deterrence, And International Law, Emily Bordelon
Approaching Cyber Warfare: Geopolitics, Deterrence, And International Law, Emily Bordelon
Senior Honors Theses
The increased use of cyber warfare, accomplished by both state and non-state actors, raises questions about traditional approaches to security and what can be done to stop threats in a technology-driven society. This thesis analyzes how cyber actions interact with geopolitics and how that relationship can provide a foundation for states to approach creating a cyber security strategy. Specifically, there should be a strategy of deterrence and then an international system of norms and laws. The first part of this thesis will address the connections between cyberspace and geography. It will then lay out the strategy of deterrence and how …
