Customizations Of Web-Scale Discovery Tools In Alabama's Public & Independent College And University Libraries: A Longitudinal Study, Harry Nuttall, Hanrong Wang Feb 2017

Customizations Of Web-Scale Discovery Tools In Alabama's Public & Independent College And University Libraries: A Longitudinal Study, Harry Nuttall, Hanrong Wang

The Southeastern Librarian

As digital technology developed to a point that electronic searching for information became practical, librarians began a quest for the Holy Grail of a single-search option that had the potential to harvest search results from the entirety of a library’s holdings. Initially it was hoped that federated searching might be this option, but federated searching was found unequal to the task. Response time was slow and could skew relevance rankings (Thompson, 2013). Further, the first generation of federated search engines proved not nearly capable of searching the totality of a library’s holdings. Something more was needed. That something more was …

Utilizing Social Network Analysis To Study Communities Of Women In Conflict Zones, James R. Gatewood, Candice R. Price Feb 2017

Utilizing Social Network Analysis To Study Communities Of Women In Conflict Zones, James R. Gatewood, Candice R. Price

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

This article proposes to study the plight of women in conflict zones through the lens of social network analysis. We endorse the novel idea of building a social network within troubled regions to assist in understanding the structure of women's communities and identifying key individuals and groups that will help rebuild and empower the lives of women. Our main argument is that we can better understand the complexity of a society with quantitative measures using a network analysis approach. Given the foundation of this paper, one can develop a model that will represent the connections between women in these communities. …

Living With Others: Fostering Radical Cosmopolitanism Through Citizenship Politics In Berlin, Feyzi Baban, Kim Rygiel Feb 2017

Living With Others: Fostering Radical Cosmopolitanism Through Citizenship Politics In Berlin, Feyzi Baban, Kim Rygiel

Political Science Faculty Publications

A growing refugee and migration crisis has imploded on European shores, immobilizing E.U. countries and fuelling a rise in far-right parties. Against this backdrop, this paper investigates the question of how to foster pluralism and a cosmopolitan desire for living with others who are newcomers. It does so by investigating community-based, citizen-led initiatives that open communities to newcomers, such as refugees and migrants, and foster cultural pluralism in ways that transform understandings of who is a citizen and belongs to the community. This study focuses on initiatives which seek to build solidarity and social relations with newcomers, but in ways …

The Impact Of A Civic Service Program On Biopsychosocial Outcomes Of Post 9/11 U.S. Military Veterans, Monica M. Matthieu, Karen A. Lawrence, Emma Robertson-Blackmore Feb 2017

The Impact Of A Civic Service Program On Biopsychosocial Outcomes Of Post 9/11 U.S. Military Veterans, Monica M. Matthieu, Karen A. Lawrence, Emma Robertson-Blackmore

Social Work Faculty Publications

Volunteering as a health promotion intervention, improves physical health, mental health, and social outcomes particularly in older adults, yet limited research exists for veterans. We conducted a preliminary study to explore whether volunteering impacts a variety of biopsychosocial outcomes, including symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, among returning military veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. A survey enrolling a prospective cohort of United States (U.S.) veterans who served in the military after 11 September 2001 and who participated in a national civic service program was conducted. A total of 346 veterans completed standardized health, mental health, and psychosocial self-report …

Psychology, Counseling Psychology, And Professional Counseling: Shared Roots, Challenges, And Opportunities, Peggy Brady‐Amoon, Kathleen Keefe-Cooperman

Faculty of Counseling & Development Publications

Psychology, counseling psychology, and professional counseling are at a crossroad. The growing movement to establish professional counseling as a distinct profession, based on an increasingly narrow definition of professional identity, is particularly relevant to counseling psychologists and professional counselors and has implications for the broader field of psychology. A brief systematic historical analysis of these professional specialties in the U.S. provides the context to examine current challenges, including proposed restriction of master’s level training, licensure or other authorization to practice, and employment to graduates of programs accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). …

Why The Classroom Is A Sacred Place For Me And Why I’Ll Keep Venturing Out Into “No-Man’S Land”… Even During These Abortion Wars, Rose Holz

Women's and Gender Studies Program: Faculty Publications

The classroom, as I see it, is not a place where I impose my views. It is a place for the free exchange of ideas even—no, especially—if they differ from my own. Otherwise, how else are we going to learn? Otherwise, how else are we going to get to know each other—maybe even like each other—even if sometimes we hold radically different views? And of course again, I would be lying if I didn’t mention just how many times I’ve miserably failed in this regard. But I’m also happy to report how over the years I’ve managed to achieve a …

Immigrants, Cultural Distance, And Trade Costs, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse Feb 2017

Immigrants, Cultural Distance, And Trade Costs, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse

Economics

We examine the effects of immigrants and cross-societal cultural differences on bilateral trade costs using two alternative measures of cultural differences (i.e. cultural distance and genetic distance). We find that bilateral trade costs generally increase with a rise in the cultural distance between trading partners but fall with a rise in the stock of immigrants. This implies that immigrants counter bilateral trade costs that are associated with greater cultural differences. Our observation is relevant from both migration and trade policy perspectives as it provides further evidence that immigrants serve as conduits for bridging cultural differences, facilitate international transactions, and enhance …

Singapore Management University (SMU) Libraries embarked on its ‘Culture of Assessment’ journey in 2013, geared towards demonstrating fiscal accountability and driving a higher degree of stakeholder engagement. With more than 80% of library staff trained in the use of Lean Six Sigma for business process improvements, it was only natural that the library started putting in place procedures and systems to continuously assess and improve services. For effective decision making, the challenge lies in the normalization, consolidation and visualization of data from the varied library services into a single coherent platform that could be used for making decisions that are …

The Impact Of Grade Ceilings On Student Grades And Course Evaluations: Evidence From A Policy Change, Devon Haskell Gorry Feb 2017

The Impact Of Grade Ceilings On Student Grades And Course Evaluations: Evidence From A Policy Change, Devon Haskell Gorry

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes the effects of a grade ceiling policy on grade distributions and course evaluations. Results show that the effects vary based upon the level of the grade ceiling. A ceiling set at 2.8 decreased overall grade point average (GPA) by reducing the number of As and Bs and increasing the number of lower grades given. This low ceiling also increased the number of withdrawals and significantly lowered course evaluations. A ceiling set at 3.2 decreased overall GPA by reducing the number of As and increasing the number of Bs given, but the effects on course evaluations were smaller …

Rotational Vs. Glide Revisited, Andreas Maheras Feb 2017

Rotational Vs. Glide Revisited, Andreas Maheras

Track and Field Faculty Publications

Although the rotational style appeared almost sixty years ago, it started establishing itself as a legitimate way of putting the shot in the early 70's when national and world records were set employing this technique. The two most prominent proponents of the early era of the rotational style were Brian Oldfield of the U.S. and Alexandr Baryshnikov of what used to be the Soviet Union. It is currently the dominant style of throwing among American male shot-putters while it is rapidly gaining ground across both sexes in both domestic and international shot-putters. Albeit its increasing popularity, the rotational style of …
