The Role Of Government In Cases Of Faith Based Child Medical Neglect, Megan Jacobson Feb 2017

The Role Of Government In Cases Of Faith Based Child Medical Neglect, Megan Jacobson

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

In the United States, parental rights have been defined by a strong liberal conception of individual rights, giving parents huge leeway in determining how their children are raised. In this paper, I examine one extreme example of parental rights gone wrong: faith based child medical neglect, a phenomenon that occurs when parents turn to faith healing for their children instead of standard medical care, resulting in the child’s death. First, I show how liberal theory has failed to address key questions regarding the limits of both parental and child rights as they apply to faith healing. Then I apply the …

Transforming Families: The Effects Of Familial Social Support And Belongingness On The Health Identity Development Of Trans Youth, Maggie Elinson Feb 2017

Transforming Families: The Effects Of Familial Social Support And Belongingness On The Health Identity Development Of Trans Youth, Maggie Elinson

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

"TRANSforming Families: The Effects of Familial Social Support and Belongingness on the Healthy Identity Development of Trans Youth" focuses on the dual transitioning process that both trans children and their families experience. This process is examined through the recognition of psychological processes that affect both the trans child and family's perception of themselves and others. This literature review also assesses the challenges and rewards in providing support to trans children, via the perspective of parents. Included are successful navigations of negative reactions towards the transitioning process, which aim to promote equitable and safe spaces for children to grow and thrive …

Intersections Between Gender And Disability In A Clinical Setting: The Need For Clinicians’ Awareness Of The Gendered Effects Of Disability, Maria Medlyn Feb 2017

Intersections Between Gender And Disability In A Clinical Setting: The Need For Clinicians’ Awareness Of The Gendered Effects Of Disability, Maria Medlyn

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

While gender is a large topic in psychological research, little research investigates the intersection between gender and disability. This research is vital in psychology as gender strongly impacts an individual’s experience with disability and people with disabilities are at an increased risk for numerous mental disorders. Despite this need for clinician’s awareness of the gendered effects of disability, disability has been historically ignored in psychological research.

This literature review investigates common perspectives used to study disability including the medical model, feminist model, social model, and disabilities studies. Psychological research on disability demonstrates that men with disabilities commonly experience conflict between …

Mental Health Disparities By Identity Among Gender And Sexual Minorities, Shelby Flanagan Feb 2017

Mental Health Disparities By Identity Among Gender And Sexual Minorities, Shelby Flanagan

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

One of the major obstacles faced by the queer and trans community is the poorer mental health outcomes this group tends to have. There is a disparity in mental health between people who are part of gender and sexual minority groups, and those who are not, meaning that gender and sexual minorities tend to have poorer mental health outcomes and higher incidences of mental health symptoms than people outside of that community. Due to the connection between mental health, marginalization, and stigma in society, this disparity may weigh more heavily on people whose identities are especially marginalized, such as bisexuals, …

Multimodal Interaction In Conneted Automated Vehicles, Myounghoon Jeon Feb 2017

Multimodal Interaction In Conneted Automated Vehicles, Myounghoon Jeon

TechTalks

Electric vehicles and automated vehicles are getting more pervasive in our everyday life. Ideally, fully automated vehicles that drivers can completely trust would be the best solution. However, due to technical limitations and human factors issues, fully automated vehicles are still under test, and no concrete evidence has yet shown their functionalities are superior to human cognition and operation. In the Mind Music Machine Lab, we are actively conducting research on connected and automated vehicles, mainly using driving simulators. This talk specifically focuses on multimodal interactions between a driver and a vehicle as well as the driver and nearby drivers. …

Being While Doing: An Inductive Model Of Mindfulness At Work, Christopher Lyddy, Darren J. Good Feb 2017

Being While Doing: An Inductive Model Of Mindfulness At Work, Christopher Lyddy, Darren J. Good

School of Business Faculty Publications

Mindfulness at work has drawn growing interest as empirical evidence increasingly supports its positive workplace impacts. Yet theory also suggests that mindfulness is a cognitive mode of “Being” that may be incompatible with the cognitive mode of “Doing” that undergirds workplace functioning. Therefore, mindfulness at work has been theorized as “being while doing,” but little is known regarding how people experience these two modes in combination, nor the influences or outcomes of this interaction. Drawing on a sample of 39 semi-structured interviews, this study explores how professionals experience being mindful at work. The relationship between Being and Doing modes demonstrated …

Webinar: Integrating Explicit And Implicit Methods In Travel Behavior Research: A Study Of Driver Attitudes And Bias, Tara Goddard Feb 2017

Webinar: Integrating Explicit And Implicit Methods In Travel Behavior Research: A Study Of Driver Attitudes And Bias, Tara Goddard

TREC Webinar Series

Car crashes are still a leading cause of death in the United States, with vulnerable road users like bicyclists and pedestrians being injured or killed at rates that outpace their mode share.

Planners, engineers, and advocates are increasingly adopting Vision Zero and Tactical Urbanism approaches and trying to better understand the underlying causes of dangerous roadway interactions. However, existing research into crash causation has focused on instrumental factors (e.g. intersection type, vehicle speed) while little research has probed the role of attitudes or socio-cognitive mechanisms in interactions between roadway users.

Social psychology suggests that attitudes and social cognitions can play …

Examining Different Reasons Why People Accept Or Reject Scientific Claims, Emilio J. C. Lobato Feb 2017

Examining Different Reasons Why People Accept Or Reject Scientific Claims, Emilio J. C. Lobato

Theses and Dissertations

The current project was designed to examine how cognitive style, cultural worldview, and conspiracy ideation correspond to various levels of agreement with scientific claims. Additionally, the kinds of justifications people provide for their position on scientific issues and the kinds of possible refutations of their scientific beliefs people are able to generate were qualitatively coded and analyzed. Participants were presented with a short survey asking about their level of agreement with scientific claims about biological evolution, anthropogenic climate change, pediatric vaccines, and genetically modified foods. Participants were asked two open-ended questions about each topic, one prompting participants to justify their …

International Reserves And Global Interest Rates, Gonçalo Pina Feb 2017

International Reserves And Global Interest Rates, Gonçalo Pina

Economics

In this paper we study the relationship between foreign currency international reserve holdings and global interest rates. To guide empirical work we solve a simple, small open-economy model with money, where the central bank manages international reserves to smooth inflation over time. This model shows that changes in interest rates are positively related to the target level of reserves. As a consequence interest rate hikes increase reserve transfers, defined as the change in international reserves net of the interest earned on reserves. Using quarterly data for 75 countries between 2000 and 2013, we document a positive relationship between interest-rate changes …

Application Of Coaching And Behavioral Skills Training During A Preschool Practicum With A College Student With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Summer Gunn, Tyra P. Sellers, Benjamin Lignugaris/Kraft

Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications

The current study looked at the effects of coaching using behavioral skills training (BST) outlined by Parsons, Rollyson, and Reid (2012). The participant was a young adult with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) enrolled in a preschool practicum course as part of the early childhood special education (ECSE) licensure program at the university that she attended. Impairment in social-pragmatics and executive functioning are associated with ASD, and are critical for engaging in an evaluative and analytic process necessary for success as an ECSE teacher. Coaching, using the BST model paired with observation and immediate feedback in the practicum environment, was used …

© 2017 Hermena, Sheen, AlJassmi, AlFalasi, AlMatroushi and Jordan. The effectiveness of tablet computers to supplement or replace paper-based text in everyday life has yet to be fully revealed. Previous investigations comparing reading performance using tablets and paper have, however, reported inconsistent results. Furthermore, the interpretability of some previous findings is limited by lack of experimental control over variables like text display conditions. In the current study, we investigated reading performance for text presented on tablet and paper. Crucially, the levels of luminance and contrast were matched precisely across tablet and paper. The study used Arabic text which differs substantially …

Electrophysiological Endophenotypes And The Error-Related Negativity (Ern) In Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Family Study, Scott A. Baldwin, Ann Clawson, Mikle South, Michael J. Larson Feb 2017

Electrophysiological Endophenotypes And The Error-Related Negativity (Ern) In Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Family Study, Scott A. Baldwin, Ann Clawson, Mikle South, Michael J. Larson

Faculty Publications

We examined the error-related negativity (ERN) as an endophenotype of ASD by comparing the ERN in families of ASD probands to control families. We hypothesized that ASD probands and families would display reduced-amplitude ERN relative to controls. Participants included 148 individuals within 39 families consisting of a mother, father, sibling, and proband. Robust ANOVAs revealed non-significant differences in ERN amplitude and behavioral performance among ASD probands relative to control youth. In subsequent multiple regression analyses group and kinship (proband, sibling, mother, father) did not significantly predict ΔERN (error minus correct ERN) or behavioral performance. Results do not provide evidence for …

Monitoring And Employee Shirking: Evidence From Mlb Umpires, John Charles Bradbury Feb 2017

Monitoring And Employee Shirking: Evidence From Mlb Umpires, John Charles Bradbury

Faculty Articles

Standard neoclassical principal-agent theory predicts that stricter monitoring should reduce employee shirking from principal desires; however, recent analyses indicate that social aspects of principal-agent relationships may result in monitoring “crowding out” disciplinary effects. From 2001 to 2008 Major League Baseball (MLB) instituted an automated pitch-tracking system (QuesTec) to assist in monitoring its umpires. The asymmetric implementation of this new monitoring technology allows for the comparison of monitored and unmonitored umpires to identify shirking to placate on-field lobbying pressure. Estimates identify deviations in calls associated with monitoring; however, overall, umpires appeared to be quite sensitive to league directives for changes in …

Beyond Personal Transformation: Engaging Students As Agents For Social Change., James A. Gambrell Feb 2017

Beyond Personal Transformation: Engaging Students As Agents For Social Change., James A. Gambrell

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

Although Transformative Learning Theory (TLT) has been around for more than 40 years, few studies empirically engage critical theoretical frameworks to move beyond personal learning to identify the impacts of transformation on society. The purpose of this article is to discuss academic literature that expands TLT in the direction of societal transformation rather than merely personal change. Moreover, this article appeals for empirical studies that inform TLT through various socially constructed variables of race, class, (trans)gender, (a)sexuality, (dis)ability, and culture. The author titles this post-modern, intersectional approach critical social transformative learning theory.

Maybe It's Time To Put Betsy Devos In 'Receive Mode', Dave Powell Feb 2017

Maybe It's Time To Put Betsy Devos In 'Receive Mode', Dave Powell

Education Faculty Publications

By now you have probably heard about Betsy DeVos' big day out recently. She tried to visit a middle school in Washington but found the front door blocked when she showed up. This led, of course, to the publication of an already-infamous cartoon suggesting that DeVos is actually a modern-day Civil Rights warrior, and to the suggestion that protesters blocking DeVos at the schoolhouse door was the functional (if not moral) equivalent of preventing black children from attending segregated schools in the 1950s and '60s. It's an argument that is morally wrong, historically stupid, and patently offensive. [excerpt]

For many years, the Temple Terrace Public Library maintained copies of the Temple Terrace Beacon. This local publication, first published in 1931, focused on news and events in the City of Temple Terrace as well as the surrounding University community. Kelsey Peduzzi, a librarian at the Temple Terrace Public Library, embarked on a project to scan and digitize issues of the newspaper in the library’s possession. After this successful project led to the creation of a digital archive of more than 800 issues of the newspaper on the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative’s digital collections webpage, the library decided that …
