Oregon's Medicaid Reform And Transition To Global Budgets Were Associated With Reductions In Expenditures, K. John Mcconnell, Stephanie Renfro, Neal T. Wallace, Deborah J. Cohen, Richard C. Lindrooth, Michael E. Chernew

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

In 2012 Oregon initiated an ambitious delivery system reform, moving the majority of its Medicaid enrollees into sixteen coordinated care organizations, a type of Medicaid accountable care organization. Using claims data, we assessed measures of access, appropriateness of care, utilization, and expenditures for five service areas (evaluation and management, imaging, procedures, tests, and inpatient facility care), comparing Oregon to the neighboring state of Washington. Overall, the transformation into coordinated care organizations was associated with a 7 percent relative reduction in expenditures across the sum of these services, attributable primarily to reductions in inpatient utilization. The change to coordinated care organizations …

Social Media Sites Use Intensity And Job Burnout Among The U.S. And Thai Employees, Peerayuth Charoensukmongkol, Murad Moqbel, Sandra Gutierrez-Wirsching Mar 2017

Social Media Sites Use Intensity And Job Burnout Among The U.S. And Thai Employees, Peerayuth Charoensukmongkol, Murad Moqbel, Sandra Gutierrez-Wirsching

Information Systems Faculty Publications

This research explored the effect of social network sites (SNS) use intensity in the workplace on three aspects of job burnout. The data were collected from non-teaching employees from universities in the U.S. (N = 174) and in Thailand (N = 182). Results from partial least squares regression revealed some evidence of the u-curve relationship between SNS use intensity and depersonalization in both countries. However, the u-curve relationship between SNS use and lack of personal accomplishment is only supported in U.S. samples. This suggests that while a moderate degree of SNS use at work tends to lower burnout, a high …

Assisted Self-Persuasion: Advertising With Consumer Adjustment To Choice, Matthew G. Nagler Mar 2017

Assisted Self-Persuasion: Advertising With Consumer Adjustment To Choice, Matthew G. Nagler

Publications and Research

I develop a new theory of persuasive advertising in which consumers rationally adjust to (i.e., improve their attitude toward) the products they choose and advertising facilitates adjustment. Advertising's price effects depend on whether marginal or inframarginal consumers are most heavily targeted, consistent with the literature. But they also depend on advertising's role as an overall adjustment intensifier, whence variation in the cost of adjustment with the strength of the consumers initial product preference determines the equilibrium price level. Whether too much or too little advertising is provided in equilibrium depends on the sign and size of advertising's price effect, the …

Investigating The Effects Of Rater's Second Language Learning Background And Familiarity With Test-Taker's First Language On Speaking Test Scores, Ksenia Zhao Mar 2017

Investigating The Effects Of Rater's Second Language Learning Background And Familiarity With Test-Taker's First Language On Speaking Test Scores, Ksenia Zhao

Theses and Dissertations

Prior studies suggest that raters' familiarity with test-takers' first language (L1) can be a potential source of bias in rating speaking tests. However, there is still no consensus between researchers on how and to what extent that familiarity affects the scores. This study investigates raters' performance and focuses on not only how raters' second language (L2) proficiency level interacts with examinees' L1, but also if raters' teaching experience has any effect on the scores. Speaking samples of 58 ESL learners with L1s of Spanish (n = 30) and three Asian languages (Korean, n = 12; Chinese, n = 8; and …

Quizlet Flashcards For The First 500 Words Of The Academic Vocabulary List, Emily R. Crandell Mar 2017

Quizlet Flashcards For The First 500 Words Of The Academic Vocabulary List, Emily R. Crandell

Theses and Dissertations

The Academic Vocabulary List (AVL) was produced by a rationale for word inclusion improved from the methodology used to generate Coxhead's AWL (Gardner & Davies, 2014). It offers a comprehensive view of high frequency academic vocabulary that could greatly benefit ELLs if implemented into ELL curricula (Gardner & Davies, 2014). However, because of the newness of the list, there are few learning resources currently utilizing the AVL. The major objective of this thesis project was to create digital flashcards for the first 500 words of the AVL to increase the list's accessibility to ELLs and teachers worldwide. These flashcards were …

Expanding Support For Graduate Students: Library Workshops On Research Funding Opportunities, Carrie L. Forbes, Gina Schlesselman-Tarango, Peggy Keeran Mar 2017

Expanding Support For Graduate Students: Library Workshops On Research Funding Opportunities, Carrie L. Forbes, Gina Schlesselman-Tarango, Peggy Keeran

University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship

This case study describes the development, implementation, and assessment of a series of grants research workshops for graduate students, which were implemented to fill a gap in graduate student support. We assessed the workshops through a series of focus groups, and findings show overall satisfaction with the grants tools and workshop. However, participants noted areas of improvement around outreach and promotion and general communication with graduate students. Additional themes emerged related to graduate student socialization and research behaviors, which suggests that librarians have an important role to serve in these areas.

The Influence Of Self-Efficacy In The Relationship Between Variants Of Self-Blame And Psychological Distress, Andrea Barrera Mar 2017

The Influence Of Self-Efficacy In The Relationship Between Variants Of Self-Blame And Psychological Distress, Andrea Barrera

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Sexual assault has consistently been found to be associated with depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology. Research shows that self-blaming attributions are directly linked to distress (Walsh, & Foshee, 1998; Walsh & Bruce, 2011). More specifically, the type of self-blame (i.e., behavioral and characterological) an individual associates with their experienced sexual assault, may influence their perceptions of avoidability of future assault and post-assault recovery. However, the role of self-efficacy in the relationship between behavioral and characterological self-blame in PTSD sexual assault survivors has been unexamined. The purpose of the proposed study is to assess the influence of self-efficacy in …

The Toxic Screen: Visions Of Petrochemical America In Hbo’S True Detective (2014), Casey Ryan Kelly Mar 2017

The Toxic Screen: Visions Of Petrochemical America In Hbo’S True Detective (2014), Casey Ryan Kelly

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This article argues that the use of toxic visual and narrative tropes in contemporary dramatic television can expand our capacity to envision and critique the deadly effects of industrial pollution. The HBO series True Detective is an exemplary case study in how evocative toxic images can be integrated into familiar television narratives to animate society’s deadly relationship with toxic chemicals. The petrochemical mise-en-scène of True Detective enlivens the toxic image with inferential power, or visual enthymemes, that invite audiences to draw connections between traumas that unfold through narrative action and omnipresence of toxic iconography. Developing a concept of the toxic …

Tier 1 Intervention: Examples Of Behavior Screeners, Natalie Hoff, Jenna Strawhun, Reece L. Peterson

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Conclusion

Regardless of which screening tool they choose, schools and school systems are urged to implement behavior screening procedures. While the task of universal screening can appear daunting, it is clear that research supports the use of employing behavior screening in schools and the positive outcomes it can produce assisting students, saving resources, and better learning outcomes. School personnel are urged to examine the research and practical considerations for administering behavioral and emotional screeners since they vary in cost, administration time, and psychometric data. Careful selection an appropriate screener that suits the needs of key stakeholders (e.g., administrators, parents, and …

Trafficking In Persons Along Mexico’S Eastern Migration Routes: The Role Of Transnational Criminal Organizations, Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera

Public Affairs and Security Studies Faculty Publications

The aim of this research is to understand the role of transnational organized crime in human trafficking along Mexico’s eastern migration routes, from Central America to Mexico’s northeastern border.1 In this region, drug traffickers are smuggling and trafficking unauthorized migrants in order to diversify their revenue streams. This project analyzes the new role of Central American gangs and Mexican-origin drug trafficking organizations—now known as transnational criminal organizations (TCOs)2—in the trafficking of persons from Central America to Mexico’s northeastern border.

An Examination Of The 16pf Global Factors As Predictors Of The Scale Of Accurate Personality Prediction (Sapp), Maria Christina Mandina Mar 2017

An Examination Of The 16pf Global Factors As Predictors Of The Scale Of Accurate Personality Prediction (Sapp), Maria Christina Mandina

Theses and Dissertations

The Scale of Accurate Personality Prediction (SAPP), first developed by Miller (2000), was designed to measure one’s self-knowledge regarding their personality traits. The SAPP was derived from the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) by means of comparing the differences between a respondent’s predicted and obtained scores on the 16PF. Numerous studies to date have examined both the reliability and validity of the SAPP. A recent study looked at the predictability of the SAPP score utilizing the 16 obtained primary scales of the 16PF (Mazur, 2015) so as to be able to derive a SAPP score directly from the obtained 16PF …

Leading From The Library Loo: An Illustrated, Documented Guide To New York City Academic Library Bathrooms, Stephanie M. Margolin, Jennifer Poggiali

Publications and Research

What students need from academic libraries has changed dramatically in recent years. We are reminded of this by each new article on library space design, which may emphasize movable furniture, Wi-Fi connectivity, class-room technology, and group study spaces. What is less frequently noted is that in all these years of change and adaptation, at least one need has remained the same: the need for a working bathroom.

Bathrooms are fundamentally important; nevertheless, we are often uncomfortable talking about these spaces (and the activities that take place within them) in public contexts.

In this conference proceeding, the authors build on their …

JETstream: Library Newsletter

The JET Library kicked off 2017 with an always well-received event, our annual “Beat the Blahs” Party, sponsored by the Office of the President. This year, we featured a dessert table where members of the Molloy Community brought in their favorite desserts to share with everyone. We also held our first JET Bake-off, with Karen Cusumano, Executive Assistant in the President’s Office, being awarded a “Certificate in Excellence in Baking” with her “Classic Sour Cream Cheese Cake.” Requests have been received by the library asking if she will share her recipe! Although we definitely did enjoy a delicious feast, I …

Action-Packed Action Research: How Comic Books, Questions, And Reflection Can Transform Information Literacy Instruction, Sarah Laleman Ward, Stephanie M. Margolin, Mason Brown

Publications and Research

How many questions can you generate when looking at a single comic panel? Which are researchable, and why? These are questions that we’ve asked our students and our library colleagues. We invite you to ask these questions and more, and consider the broader significance of question-asking and reflective teaching to information literacy and ask if there is a place for comics -- or image-laden materials -- in your classroom.

The Varying Views Of Sexual Assault From Cal Poly's Campus Community, Kristen A. Tabone Mar 2017

The Varying Views Of Sexual Assault From Cal Poly's Campus Community, Kristen A. Tabone

Social Sciences

This paper examines the various opinions of members of Cal Poly’s community about sexual assault. Sexual assault has increasingly become a topic of discussion not only in the media, but on Cal Poly’s campus. This project shall focus on the views of students in varying grade levels and those associated with Greek Life, along with various members of the administration, including campus resource providers. A review of the literature suggests that while previous studies have gathered an abundance of data, more research studies need to be conducted to become fully aware of the scope of problems concerning sexual assaults. Through …

The Benefits Of Prison Art: Providing Rehabilitation And Positive Implications, Eliese Maxwell Mar 2017

The Benefits Of Prison Art: Providing Rehabilitation And Positive Implications, Eliese Maxwell

Social Sciences

This research paper aims to examine how artists in prison have been impacted from creating art while incarcerated. Previous research has shown that participating in the arts while incarcerated can help the individual create a new identity for themselves. The formation of this new identity can help the individual with rehabilitation because they find a new purpose for their actions and future, and they change their behavior to be accepted to the artist subgroup. Art also provides other benefits that help with improving their personal skills, interpersonal skills, and character improvement. To demonstrate how the arts help incarcerated individuals cope …
