Institute of Societal Leadership Research Collection

In this research paper, we examine 183 undergraduates’ perspectives of societal leaders and societal leadership. Participants were asked to respond to the following prompts: name an individual whom you think is a societal leader and explain why do you think he/she is worthy of the title of a societal leader. Responses to these prompts allowed us to compile the attributes that these applicants perceived societal leaders to possess. The six categories of key leader attributes that have been introduced by Bass and Stogdill were used to inform the coding categories. Besides these six categories, one other category, namely moral values, …

Some operated for as many as six decades until, by the 1970s, most had closed or were integrated into the library systems of their larger …

Responsible Leadership: A Behavioural Perspective, Joseph Flocy Mar 2017

Responsible Leadership: A Behavioural Perspective, Joseph Flocy

Dissertations and Theses Collection

A review of the existing theories on various leadership styles clearly point to the lack of two critical aspects - 'responsibility' and 'accountability' in their characterisation. It is imperative in this era to focus on those breed of leaders who can respond collectively with credible actions for their businesses while accepting the full responsibility of their actions. This has given rise to `Responsible Leadership (RL)' as a new leadership construct for leaders in the twenty first century. Still in its infant stages of discussion, literature on RL lack a clear definition and the kind of behaviours that are manifested in …

Given that Singapore exhibits a hybrid of cultures, it purposes to comprehend how multiculturalism is operationalized and to uncover if the values that have a greater influence on organizational communication resemble those in individualistic or collectivistic societies. Using Gudykunst's (1998) seven dimensions that influence individualism-collectivism on communication as a guide, this study interviewed 20 public relations practitioners in Singapore. Our findings showed that although the patterns expressed is slightly more consistent with those found in collectivistic cultures, it does not resemble collectivism in …

Students participating in sustained community service at an urban Catholic and Marianist university were volunteer informants in this qualitative exploration of the meaning they make of their service experiences. A PhD student research team (nine members) interviewed fourteen undergraduate students (eleven of whom were seniors). Findings were organized as themes constructed within three domains: background, experience, and meaning. Within “background,” students who had prior work in faith-based service before college deepened their meaning of service. Within “experience,” there were social and cultural dynamics of navigating on and off campus life, including the roles students played as well as the challenge …

Role Of Reward Structure In Creativity And Idea Fixation, Jia Hao Goh Mar 2017

Role Of Reward Structure In Creativity And Idea Fixation, Jia Hao Goh

Dissertations and Theses Collection

This study seeks to investigate the role of team reward structures, namely the equity and equality of rewards on team idea fixation, as well as its eventual effects on team idea creativity. Through a manipulation of reward structures, distributions of rewards differ across various teams, and this is expected to result in changes in individual motivation to share ideas within teams. Furthermore, due to the role of motivation in team processes, it is expected that team learning and performance goal orientation would moderate the relationship between team rewards structure and team idea fixation. Results shows that teams in the equality …

Mothers in the U.S. returning to work after maternity leave report difficulty with the need to take frequent breaks to pump breastmilk so many stop breastfeeding. Factors discouraging pumping breastmilk in the workplace motivated a content analysis of public comments posted in response to a legal deposition that occurred in January of 2011 in which an attorney who was a new mother was challenged about taking a break to pump breastmilk. A total of 899 public comments posted on Yahoo in 2015-2016 in …

Do We Need A New Approach To Christian Leadership Development?, Erich Baumgartner Mar 2017

Do We Need A New Approach To Christian Leadership Development?, Erich Baumgartner

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

"Going back to christian leadership, there are christian leaders needed today that have the courage to reexamine the mission of God here on earth for christian organizations and churches. Such leaders often realize there is something new that is needed. the outcome, however, is not always clear, and it takes dedication of the whole team before the desired outcome appears. that is, in my opinion, one of the most important leadership qualities to which to aspire. It demands a different kind of leadership development process that is not only based on classes and books, but that is based on processes …

Birth Plan Non-Adherence: Impact On Birth Satisfaction, Interventions And Perceived Birth Trauma, Mollie Berger

Student Research Conference Select Presentations

Birth plans help to empower women in their birth decisions and create a means to communicate with the healthcare providers prior to going into labor. Birth plans play a distinct role in overall birth satisfaction, which in turn has an impact of maternal well-being and bonding with the infant. When changes are made to birth plans, especially without the mother’s consent, overall birth satisfaction may decrease and the risk of developing post- birth traumatic symptoms may increase. An online survey of childbirth experiences was administered to more than 2000 women. Birth satisfaction and post-birth traumatic symptoms were compared between women …
