Economic Valuation Of The Water Quality In Sugar Creek, Chonghyun Christie Byun Mar 2017

Economic Valuation Of The Water Quality In Sugar Creek, Chonghyun Christie Byun

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

A contingent valuation survey was conducted to estimate the aggregate willingness to pay for reducing pollutants in a popular, highly visited creek in Indiana. The Little Sugar Creek Watershed is located in the southwestern portion of the state, runs through two state parks, and is frequently used for various recreational purposes including canoeing, fishing, hiking, and camping. As such, it has a direct value for recreational as well as non-recreational purposes that are directly related to the water quality of the creek. The survey was useful in gathering information to estimate a tobit regression model to determine the valuation of …

A Call For Building Credible Brackish-Water Open Macroeconomic Models, Krishna T. Kumar Mar 2017

A Call For Building Credible Brackish-Water Open Macroeconomic Models, Krishna T. Kumar

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

The recent experience of macroeconomists in their inability to foresee and avert the prolonged global recession called into question the credibility of their economic theories and models. This paper is an attempt at introspection. The paper reviews the developments in macroeconomic theory and models and offers suggestions on what could have gone wrong with the prevailing macroeconomic theories and models. It suggests that there are dangers in following the mainstream models if such models are not based on empirical credibility in respect of fitting the real-life data they are supposed to explain. It suggests the limitations of statistical methods used …

A Needs-Ictd Strategy Alignment Foundation For The Measurement Of Ictd Impact: Three Case Studies In South Africa, Gugulethu Q. Baduza, Caroline P. Khene Mar 2017

A Needs-Ictd Strategy Alignment Foundation For The Measurement Of Ictd Impact: Three Case Studies In South Africa, Gugulethu Q. Baduza, Caroline P. Khene

The African Journal of Information Systems

Access to ICTD projects has increased over the years; however, they have not significantly changed the lives of the targeted communities. This discrepancy relates to the gap that exists between the reality of the community, its needs and the ICTD strategy of the project. This research paper presents a Needs-ICTD strategy alignment framework to support the alignment of ICTD strategy, and the development and promotion of contextual needs of marginalized areas. The framework also contributes to the identification of preliminary impact indicators, which can support impact assessment. Through a multi-case study investigation of the Siyakhula Living Lab and the SAP …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: March 17, 2017, Eric Thompson Mar 2017

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: March 17, 2017, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) 1 rose by 2.08% during February of 2017. The indicator also rose rapidly in January. The two increases indicate that economic growth will be strong in Nebraska during the second half of 2017. Among the components of the indicator, business expectations were very strong during February. Further, initial claims for unemployment insurance declined during the month, a sign of a strengthening labor market. The value of the U.S. dollar also fell during February, which is a positive sign for Nebraska’s export-oriented businesses.

Perspectives On Evaluation In Financial Education: Landscape, Issues, And Studies, William B. Walstad, Carly Urban, Carlos J. Asarta, Elizabeth Breitbach, William Bosshardt, Julie Heath, Barbara O'Neill, Jamie Wagner, Jing Jian Xiao Mar 2017

Perspectives On Evaluation In Financial Education: Landscape, Issues, And Studies, William B. Walstad, Carly Urban, Carlos J. Asarta, Elizabeth Breitbach, William Bosshardt, Julie Heath, Barbara O'Neill, Jamie Wagner, Jing Jian Xiao

Economics Faculty Publications

This review discusses the heterogeneity in the effectiveness of financial education programs that occurs because of the unique conditions for programs and methods to evaluate them. The authors define six groups served by financial education: children, youth, college students and young adults, working adults, military personnel, and low-income consumers. They then discuss research and evaluation literature for each group with a critical eye on program purpose, content, and evaluation. They also present findings affecting multiple groups on four issues: student loans, homeownership, retirement planning, and financial advising. The accumulated evidence on the effectiveness of financial education is positive, although the …

As the human population continues to grow, questions arise concerning how to deal with problems that are human in origin: problems like pollution and environmental degradation, resource depletion, and global food shortages. The global population, which currently sits at over 7 billion, is expected to reach 10.9 billion by the end of the century.

Dynamic Assignment Models And Their Application In The Portland Metro Region, Peter G. Bosa Mar 2017

Dynamic Assignment Models And Their Application In The Portland Metro Region, Peter G. Bosa

PSU Transportation Seminars

Metro's Research and Modeling Services Program is responsible for the development, maintenance, and application of travel demand models for application in long-range planning efforts in the Portland metropolitan region.

Representation of traffic—both vehicular and transit—plays an integral role in the travel demand modeling process. Complex software is required to assign vehicles and transit users to transportation networks to determine viable options available to travelers, costs associated with those options, and sets of routes by which travelers might navigate their trips.

Metro's current static assignment model has traditionally sufficed for use with Metro's four-step travel demand model. However, static assignments have …

A Longitudinal Study Of Parental Anti-Substance-Use Socialization For Early Adolescents’ Substance Use Behaviors, Youngju Shin, Michelle Miller-Day Mar 2017

A Longitudinal Study Of Parental Anti-Substance-Use Socialization For Early Adolescents’ Substance Use Behaviors, Youngju Shin, Michelle Miller-Day

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

The present study examines the role of communication in shaping norms and behaviors with significant personal and societal consequences. Based on primary socialization theory and the general theory of family communication, parental anti-substance-use socialization processes were hypothesized to influence early adolescents’ substance use norms and behaviors. Using longitudinal data (N =1,059), the results revealed that parent-adolescent prevention communication about substance use in the media and parental anti-substance-use injunctive norms were positively associated with early adolescents’ personal anti-substance-use norms, which, in turn, led to decreases in recent alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use. It was also found that family expressiveness and structural …

Empirical evidence demonstrates myriad benefits of breastfeeding for mother and child, along with benefits to businesses that support breastfeeding. Federal and state legislation requires workplace support for pumping and provides protections for public breastfeeding. Yet, many are unaware of these laws, and thus, support systems remain underdeveloped. We used a community-based approach to spread awareness about the evidence-based benefits of breastfeeding and breastfeeding support. We worked to improve breastfeeding support at the local hospital, among local employers, and throughout the broader community. Our coalition representing the hospital, the chamber of commerce, the university, and local lactation consultants used a public …

Draining The Swamp: A Guide For Outsiders And Career Politicians, Carl Abbott Mar 2017

Draining The Swamp: A Guide For Outsiders And Career Politicians, Carl Abbott

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

What do Ron Paul, Nancy Pelosi and President Donald Trump have in common? They’ve all promised to “drain the swamp” of Washington politics.

These ambitious “hydraulic engineers” rely on a phrase that is deeply mired in our political discourse. The metaphor gets its clout from the notion that Washington was built in an actual physical swamp, whose foul landscape has somehow nourished rotten politics.

The assumption is just plain wrong: Washington was never a swamp, as I’ve discovered in exploring its first two centuries.

Medicaid Managed Care And The Health Care Utilization Of Foster Children, Makayla Palmer, James Marton, Aaron Yelowitz, Jeffery Talbert Mar 2017

Medicaid Managed Care And The Health Care Utilization Of Foster Children, Makayla Palmer, James Marton, Aaron Yelowitz, Jeffery Talbert

Molasky Family Department of Economics and Real Estate Faculty Research

A recent trend in state Medicaid programs is the transition of vulnerable populations into Medicaid managed care (MMC) who were initially carved out of such coverage, such as foster children or those with disabilities. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the impact of the transition of foster children from fee-for-service Medicaid coverage to MMC coverage on outpatient health care utilization. There is very little empirical evidence on the impact of managed care on the health care utilization of foster children because of the recent timing of these transitions as well as challenges associated with finding data sets large …

The Irb As Gatekeeper: Effects On Research With Children And Youth, Brent D. Harger, Melissa Quintela Mar 2017

The Irb As Gatekeeper: Effects On Research With Children And Youth, Brent D. Harger, Melissa Quintela

Sociology Faculty Publications

Gatekeepers play an important role in research conducted with children and youth. Although qualitative researchers frequently discuss institutional and individual gatekeepers, such as schools and parents, little attention has been paid to the role that Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) play in determining who is allowed to research particular populations and the ramifications of these decisions for findings involving children and youth. In order to examine this role, we compare negotiations of two researchers working on separate projects with similar populations with the IRB of a large Midwestern university. In both cases, it is likely that board members used their own …

The Continued Importance Of Research With Children And Youth: The “New” Sociology Of Childhood 40 Years Later, Melissa Swauger, Ingrid E. Castro, Brent D. Harger

Sociology Faculty Publications

This chapter presents the broad themes of this special issue by introducing the contributions and connections among the chapters in the volume. Recent theoretical constructions of childhood have positioned children as social actors resulting in a growth of child- and youth-centered empirical research. Yet, there is a continued importance for researchers to discuss ethical issues that arise in research with youth, contend with the competing constructions of children as social agents and in need of protection, and explore innovative methodological strategies used in research with youth.

Using the data collected from 212 participants, this study examined the perceptions that

Kenyans have toward television news with cancer messages and how the audiences use the messages. Using both close-ended and open-ended survey questions, this study investigated the motives that Kenyans have prior to watching news, how these motives affect their frequency of watching such news, how engaged they are with the news, their views of such news, how television news contribute to their knowledge about cancer, and their personal experiences with cancer.

Some of the results suggest that the motives that Kenyans have are to gain knowledge on …

Teaching Citation Rhetorically: Reading, Not Just Writing, Nancy M. Foasberg

Locking Up Families Is Inhumane—And Unconstitutional, Lynnette Arnold, Miranda Cady Hallett

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

From the fear of asylum-seekers in Western Europe to the panic around “illegals” in the United States, there is a global backlash against immigrants. These sentiments are increasingly accompanied by a crackdown in enforcement. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed 352,882 people in detention facilities during fiscal year 2016, a sharp increase from the 193,951 detained in 2015.

U.S. President Donald Trump promises to lock up exponentially more, having made the fight against “illegal immigration” a central plank of his campaign platform. But who are the people incarcerated in these immigration prisons? What are they …

Educational Inequality In Indiana: The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status And Race On Istep+ Exam Performance, Jennifer S. Clark Mar 2017

Educational Inequality In Indiana: The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status And Race On Istep+ Exam Performance, Jennifer S. Clark

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

A gap in education outcomes exists in Indiana for female and male students. The gap in educational outcomes can be seen in the standardized tests that are a requirement for students to take as a part of their education. In Indiana, students in K–12 education are required to take the ISTEP+ exam in grades 3–8, and in grade 10 as a graduation requirement. Indiana had 292 school districts or corporations, which were used in this analysis to determine the gap in educational outcomes. The 2011 and 2012 ISTEP+ exam scores were analyzed to determine how SES and race affect male …

Service Learning In A Regional Urban Midwest University: An Overview Of Five Projects, Monica Solinas-Saunders, Lori Anderson, Jackie Huey, Atta Ceesay, Joseph Ferrandino, Danny Tsataros, John Tsolakos

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

The use of service-learning courses has evolved in the United States in the past three decades. While the most traditional approach to service learning focuses on what universities and colleges can do for the community (Speck and Hoppe 2004), a more contemporary approach has transformed service learning into a holistic experience that engages educators, students, and community partners in a dynamic process of mutual exchange. Drawing upon the examples of other universities (Chupp and Joseph 2010; Freire 2004; Pompa 2002), our department has recently created five new opportunities for service learning in which service learning is viewed as a system …

Developing An Understanding Of Positive And Negative Organizational Ethics By Watching Scenes From The Greatest Hollywood Business Movies, Steve Dunphy Mar 2017

Developing An Understanding Of Positive And Negative Organizational Ethics By Watching Scenes From The Greatest Hollywood Business Movies, Steve Dunphy

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

It is proposed to use scenes from Hollywood’s greatest movies about business for the purpose of developing an understanding of positive and negative organizational ethics. Five lists of “greatest business movies” are enumerated, and the overlapping movies are specified in the final list. An evaluation form is developed, and the movies are singled out for their ethical dilemmas and resolutions. The conclusion notes that studying carefully selected positive and negative role models as depicted by Hollywood films can create an improved organizational climate for all.

Patterns Of Ofdi: Comparing Japan’S And China’S Emergence On The Global Scene, Yaoning Wu, Kevin Christ Mar 2017

Patterns Of Ofdi: Comparing Japan’S And China’S Emergence On The Global Scene, Yaoning Wu, Kevin Christ

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

This paper compares patterns of outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) for Japan and China over similar periods of their integration into the global economy. From a statistical perspective, China’s recent pattern of OFDI flows (2004–2010) differs from Japan’s OFDI flows during a similar period of growth and emergence onto the world scene (1976– 1982). While acknowledging that the world economy is a much different place today than it was in 1982, we nevertheless argue that these differences in OFDI flows constitute an important component in any understanding of the nature of development followed by these two important Asian economies.
