El Croquis: An Adaptive Response To Achieve Best Access, Kathy Edwards Mar 2017

El Croquis: An Adaptive Response To Achieve Best Access, Kathy Edwards

Presentations

El Croquis, GA Houses, AV Monografías: monographic serials or serial monographs? These titles represent some of the highest-quality sources for the plans, sections, elevations, and site plans students rely on in their study of architectural precedents, so we want students to be able to exploit them thoroughly. How our library catalogs display these resources–as periodicals with a basic serial record, or as monographs with individual titles, subject headings, and content notes –significantly affects how discoverable and, ultimately, how useful their best features are. This presentation examines how we at Clemson’s Gunnin Architecture Library went about rethinking and reconfiguring our treatment …

Does All The Excitement Really End At Marriage? An Assessment Of Same-Sex Marriage Legislation And Lgbt Activism, Kelsie Diaz

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the legalization of same-sex marriage, civil unions, and domestic partnerships with LGBT political participation and activism. There has long been a debate between several groups of LGBT activists on what the legalization of same-sex marriage will do to LGBT activism. Will achieving same-sex marriage ultimately hinder the movement or will it open new realms of possibility for change? This study aims to survey the arguments offered by a few prevalent sides of the same-sex marriage debate, then provide empirical information as support for one of those claims. This study …

Locus Of Control, Parents Involvement And College Disability Accommodations, Olivia Sara Aquino Mar 2017

Locus Of Control, Parents Involvement And College Disability Accommodations, Olivia Sara Aquino

Theses and Dissertations

An increasing number of students with learning disabilities are enrolled in college and seek support services under ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act). According to U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics (2015), Digest of Education Statistics, 2013 (2015-011), approximately 11% of students report having a disability. However, although more students attending post-secondary education are receiving accommodations and supports, the retention of these students remains a central concern. A student's ability to self-advocate seems to be one key to academic success. Self-determination and self-efficacy factors are frequently cited as essential to successful transition to college. The current study explored …

The future of Daily Fantasy Sports throughout the United States remains uncertain. Although there have been numerous attempts to double down on the spread of gambling, the growing attraction to gamble has not been suppressed. With the recent proposed legislation and litigation over the legality of Daily Fantasy Sports, a new debate has emerged that implicates America’s desire to protect its “public morals.” Part I of this Note will discuss the intricacies of Daily Fantasy Sports and the allegations against FanDuel and DraftKings as of February 2016. Part II will analyze the current legal framework surrounding global internet gambling and …

Starting From The End: What To Do When Restricted Data Is Released, Marta Teperek, Rhys Morgan, Michelle Ellefson, Danny Kingsley

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Repository managers can never be one hundred percent sure of the security of hosted research data. Even assuming that human errors and technical faults will never happen, repositories can be subject to hacking attacks. Therefore, repositories accepting personal/sensitive data (or other forms of restricted data) should have workflows in place with defined procedures to be followed should things go wrong and restricted data is inappropriately released. In this paper we will report on our considerations and procedures when restricted data from our institution was inappropriately released.

In Transition? The Struggle For Socio-Economic Justice In South Africa, Vinodh Jaichand Mar 2017

In Transition? The Struggle For Socio-Economic Justice In South Africa, Vinodh Jaichand

Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law

Does the post-transitional justice phase of twenty-two years after the advent of freedom in South Africa provide an appropriate time to reflect on the potential realized or lost? It is argued that the planned and sustained implementation of socioeconomic rights as part of transformation is essential. Even constitutional protections of such rights yield slow progress through legal precedents and therefore may result in an incomplete transition.

The Rationale Of China’S Media Regulation Policy In The Process Of The Institutional Transformation, Wu Weiguang Mar 2017

The Rationale Of China’S Media Regulation Policy In The Process Of The Institutional Transformation, Wu Weiguang

Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law

Through its institutional transformation, China’s media policy has features of both power-regulated societies and rights-regulated societies. The development of human societies is based on three dominant variables: competition, technology, and institutions. Throughout civilized history, human societies can be categorized into two types, either power-regulated societies or rights-regulated societies. The standard of categorization is based on different forces that coerce the social order of the society. The coercing force of power-regulated societies is rooted in the regime of power, such as authoritarianism or totalitarianism. Ancient China and the former Soviet Union are typical examples of such power-regulated societies. The coercing force …

No More Starving Artists: Why The Art Market Needs A Universal Artist Resale Royalty Right, Allison Schten Mar 2017

No More Starving Artists: Why The Art Market Needs A Universal Artist Resale Royalty Right, Allison Schten

Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law

Artists often struggle to make a living because they see profits only from the first sales of their work. Unlike other creative arts, where the creator can earn a living via sales of books or music, an artist’s product is valuable for its singularity. Droit de suite, or the artist resale royalty right, allows artists to recover a percentage of profits from resales of their work. Implementing resale royalty schemes has been a subject of controversy worldwide due to fears that the art market will relocate to areas without such additional transaction costs—but broad-scale, international implementation of droit de …

Spectral Signatures Of Immature Lucilia Sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Jodie-A. Warren, T. D. Pulindu Ratnasekera, David A. Campbell, Gail S. Anderson

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Hyperspectral remote sensing is an innovative technology with applications in many sciences and is a non-destructive method that may offer more precise aging within development stages. Hyperspectral reflectance measurements from the anterior, midsection, and posterior of Lucilia sericata (Meigen) larvae and pupae were conducted daily from samples of the developing insects beginning at second instar. Only midsection measurements were conducted on second instar larvae due to their size, to ensure that the measurement was not of reflective surroundings. Once measured, all insects were washed with deionized water, blotted with filter paper, and re-measured. Daily age prediction during the post-feeding stage …

Refugees In Urban Environments: Social, Economic, And Infrastructure Impacts, Garrett L. Jameson Mar 2017

Refugees In Urban Environments: Social, Economic, And Infrastructure Impacts, Garrett L. Jameson

Theses and Dissertations

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has estimated that in 2015 there were 21.3 million refugees worldwide; it is estimated that 1.8 million of these persons were newly displaced during 2015. As refugees leave their country to seek the protection of another nation's government, they generally flow into urban areas. The impact of this flow on cities and on the refugees, themselves, is not fully understood. This study is focused on the impact of government policy decisions on the social, legal, and economic integration of refugees within an urban environment. Investigation into this topic resulted in the development of …

The Bakla And The Silver Screen : Queer Cinema In The Philippines, Michael Nuñez Inton Mar 2017

The Bakla And The Silver Screen : Queer Cinema In The Philippines, Michael Nuñez Inton

Lingnan Theses

This study looks at representations of the bakla in Philippine cinema from 1954 to 2015. I argue that the bakla, a local gender category that incorporates ideas of male homosexuality, effeminacy, cross-dressing, and transgenderism, has become a central figure in Philippine cinema. I examine the films of Dolphy, the actor who was the first to popularize bakla roles in mainstream cinema, and I outline several tropes that create the bakla image in movies: “classical” kabaklaan (being bakla), which involves crossdressing, effeminacy, and being woman-hearted; the conversion trope, where the bakla stubbornly resists being forcibly masculinized by the men that surround …

Leaders On Their Best Behavior: Leader Behaviors Resulting In Effective Virtual Teams, Sarah Elizabeth Frick Mar 2017

Leaders On Their Best Behavior: Leader Behaviors Resulting In Effective Virtual Teams, Sarah Elizabeth Frick

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A more globalized workforce, coupled with technological advances in electronic communication, have led organizations to turn to virtual work teams at a rapidly increasing rate (Gilson, Maynard, Young, Vartiainen, & Hakonen, 2015). Leadership has been shown to aid team performance across work domains (Morgeson, DeRue, & Karam, 2010), and there exist a host of functional leader behaviors that have been found to benefit face-to-face team performance (Burke, Stagl, Klein, Goodwin, Salas, & Halpin, 2006). Attention to leadership in this new era of work teams is necessary to identify those specific behaviors that enable effective virtual team functioning. Team performance, whether …

Latino Subgroups Political Participation In American Politics: The Other Latinos’ Electoral Behavior, Angelica Maria Leon Velez Mar 2017

Latino Subgroups Political Participation In American Politics: The Other Latinos’ Electoral Behavior, Angelica Maria Leon Velez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the impact of Latinidad in Latino political participation, especially in regard to voting behavior. Although Latinos often have been portrayed as a decisive electoral group, the reality is they have not fulfilled the expectations imposed upon them. Therefore, I argue Latinos with different levels of group consciousness will engage differently in politics, which affects the voting statistics of the ethnicity in Censuses, reports and surveys. The use of pan-ethnic terms and the constant stereotypes of Latinos all being “the same,” has caused separation rather than cohesiveness within the minority group, which has resulted in low political engagement. …

Daniel Bryan & The Negotiation Of Kayfabe In Professional Wrestling, Brooks Oglesby Mar 2017

Daniel Bryan & The Negotiation Of Kayfabe In Professional Wrestling, Brooks Oglesby

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will examine the negotiation of kayfabe within the context of professional wrestling using a 2014 WWE storyline that arose from fan backlash as a primary text. The perceived marginalization of wrestler Daniel Bryan by the fans led to a disconnect between the narratives that were performed in-ring and the counter-narratives produced by the fans, which in turn led to an overtly co-authored narrative between in-ring performers and fans. In addition to studying the television narratives that characterize the “Yes Movement,” in WWE, I will analyze archived social media responses within fan communities on Twitter and Reddit to make …

Can Selection Tests Administered Via Video Games Reduce Faking?, Philip Scott Ramsay Mar 2017

Can Selection Tests Administered Via Video Games Reduce Faking?, Philip Scott Ramsay

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

One of the fundamental underlying assumptions of selection procedures is that the information gathered from applicants is accurate, and thus, will predict performance on the job (Donovan, Dwight, & Schneider, 2014; Schmitt & Sinha, 2011). As self-report instruments such as paper-and-pencil tests and unsupervised online surveys become more prevalent in organizational selection contexts (Truxillo & Bauer, 2011) due to ease of use and cost efficiency, the concern of applicants faking responses to inaccurately portray themselves as more highly desirable is increasingly critical (Hough, Oswald, & Ployhart, 2001). Depending on the exact magnitude of the particular selection event, this compromise of …

Putting The Heart Back In The Heartland: Regional Land Bank Initiatives For Sustainable Rural Economies, Ron Johnson Mar 2017

Putting The Heart Back In The Heartland: Regional Land Bank Initiatives For Sustainable Rural Economies, Ron Johnson

Arkansas Law Review

Almost half of the population of the world lives in rural regions and mostly in a state of poverty. Such inequalities in human development have been one of the primary reasons for unrest and, in some parts of the world, even violence. To ensure that we have a world that is happy, prosperous and peaceful, it is important for us to collectively evolve and implement methods that can empower and enhance the living standard and raise the income level of the world’s deprived population in a sustainable manner.

Changing The Focus Of Urban Transport From Congestion To Access, Jeffrey Gutman Mar 2017

Changing The Focus Of Urban Transport From Congestion To Access, Jeffrey Gutman

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

The traditional approach of urban transport planners has been to focus on the reduction of traffic congestion. More recently, with the growth of cities worldwide and the ever-present challenge of congestion, transport and urban planners have started to focus on the concept of access as the ultimate goal. How can we ensure and enhance access to jobs, education, commerce, and other services by all segments of the population? This requires a more complementary effort by transport planners and urban planners as well as finance and fiscal experts. The lecture will follow this shift in emphasis, the opportunities it poses, and …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Goal Setting And Textual Feedback Using A Wearable Technology For Increasing Running Distance, Michael Zarate

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Obesity is a growing problem that has life-threatening health consequences. One way to combat obesity is by increasing physical activity levels, which has been a focus of recent applied behavioral research. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of goal setting and textual feedback without social support to increase physical activity, specifically weekly running distance. A multiple-baseline across participants design was employed with four participants using a Fitbit Flex accelerometer to collect two physical activity measures, intense steps and distance. Results showed a significant increase in weekly running distance for two out of four participants following the …
