Factors Affecting Student Graduation Rates, Kaleb Luse
Factors Affecting Student Graduation Rates, Kaleb Luse
Research in the Capitol
Over the past few years, colleges and the United States government have become increasingly interested in raising graduation rates. This paper uses data from a survey given to students during their freshman year to analyze factors specific to an individual student that makes them more or less likely to graduate. Previous research shows that high school GPA and SAT scores are the two most statistically significant factors. In my study, I use a logit regression model to determine which factors are significant to a student’s likelihood of graduating. As with previous research I found high school GPA to be the …
The Effect Of Childhood Siblings On Adult Income, Heather Bavido
The Effect Of Childhood Siblings On Adult Income, Heather Bavido
Research in the Capitol
As evidenced by the decreased US fertility rate, families are having fewer children. As productivity has risen, the opportunity cost of having children has risen; and as wealth has increased the need to have children to provide income in old age has fallen. Research shows that with family income held constant, parents face a tradeoff between how many children they have and the perceived quality of the children. My research explores the relationship between the number of siblings an individual grows up with and adult wages. Using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979, my results show individuals with seven …

The Relationship Between Online Students' Use Of Services And Their Feelings Of Mattering, Tracy L. Hart
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
The purpose of this single case study was to examine the relationship between online students’ use of support services and their feelings of mattering using a convergent parallel research design to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Students enrolled exclusively in online classes during the academic year 2015-2016 at the University of New Mexico (UNM) were invited to participate. The survey was based on the theoretical and conceptual frameworks for comprehensive services and mattering theory. Responses provided descriptive statistics and correlation analysis with stories that added to the description of students’ service experiences.
Service-to-service correlations showed correlation strength of moderate, strong, …

Illiad, Rapid, And An Unmediated Solution To The Interlibrary Loan Textbook Dilemma, Erika Mcneil
Published Works
As the cost of textbooks rises and discoverability of resources improves, students are turning more and more to interlibrary loan to meet their textbook needs. This paper describes how systems can be utilized to streamline processes and allow for the cancelling of textbook requests consistently and appropriately by taking full advantage of the capabilities of ILLiad and Rapid, saving both staff time and money. This paper looks at how a large research university made the decision to implement a textbook policy, and how it navigated the troubled waters to come to a simple, unmediated solution.

Management and Organizational Studies Publications
Detecting the incidence and impact of illegal insider trading is a difficult process since access to the actual trading records of insiders that overlap precisely with fraudulent events is difficult. This paper provides a case study of a specific IT stock in Canada that was successfully prosecuted in the Canadian court system for market manipulation and illegal insider trading violations. The study provides a quantification of the impact of insider trading activities by the President directly through his own account or through accounts under his control, and illustrates the impact of some off-exchange transactions by the impugned parties. Overall, the …

The Summit was inspired by CLDI’s investment in developing and sustaining a cooperative plan for Canadian linked data development for libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural institutions across the country. CLDI, comprising of Canada’s five top research libraries, the University of Toronto, McGill University, Université de Montréal, University of Alberta, and the University of British Columbia, and partners at Library and Archives Canada, Bibliothèque …

Collaborative Library Outreach: A Key Retention Strategy At Open Access Institutions, Katy Mathuews, Zachary Lewis
Collaborative Librarianship
Serving large populations of at-risk, first-generation, and low-income students, open access institutions face unique challenges regarding student retention. Academic libraries with intentional outreach programs are a valuable element of a comprehensive institutional retention plan targeted to the unique student population of open access institutions. Using the Clark Memorial Library at Shawnee State University in Appalachian Ohio as a case study, this article explores the elements of an intentional library outreach program targeted to support the retention of first-year students, many of whom are classified as first-generation, academically underprepared, or otherwise at-risk. The outreach librarian facilitates collaborative and intentional engagement opportunities …
Pressing Forward In Scholarly Communities: Synthesizing Communication Technologies With The Researchers Who Utilize Them, Eric Olson
Collaborative Librarianship
Digital communication technologies have dramatically changed the ways in which scholarship is accessed, discussed, and shared. Joining the traditional journals and manuscripts are new ways to distribute and consume research, including blogs, podcasts, white papers, and more. There is more information available and more ways to access it than ever before, which presents new sets of challenges and opportunities. PressForward is free, open-source software that responds to these needs by combining the features of content aggregation, discussion, and publication into a single, user-friendly dashboard. Acknowledging that collaboration and networking is increasingly important in research development and funding, PressForward has built-in, …
American Prosperity Faces The Music, Douglas E. Archibald
American Prosperity Faces The Music, Douglas E. Archibald
FHSS Mentored Research Conference
If music influences people, what influences music? Intuitively, it is inspired by cultural traditions, changes in technology, and the zeitgeist of nations. On an even deeper level, it is inspired by demand. People will not buy music that does not give them utility. Now, how can someone know what type of music is in demand, or will be in demand? What factors influence music demand, and by studying these can future music trends be predicted? The purpose of this study is to discover how the economic well-being of a nation influences the demand for certain types of music, and if …

Involuntary Part-Time Employment: A Slow And Uneven Economic Recovery, Rebecca K. Glauber
Carsey Publications
In this brief, author Rebecca Glauber reports that, although unemployment overall has returned to its pre-recession level, involuntary part-time employment is still much higher than it was before the Great Recession began--a trend that raises questions about the continuing ability of the economy to deliver employment security to people willing and able to work. Involuntary part-time employment is down 34 percent since the Great Recession but is still above its pre-recession level. If the involuntary part-time employment rate continues this pace of decline, it will not return to its pre-recession level until 2018, a full nine years after the official …

Freeing Knowledge: Approaches To Foster Collaboration Between Academic Libraries And The Wikipedia Community, Laura Soito
Collaborative Librarianship
Wikipedia has become a ubiquitous source for information, as well as a global community of people dedicated to the free exchange of knowledge. While its convenience may seem at first glance to be a threat to the traditional role of libraries, an overlap of purpose fosters unique opportunities for working together to advance free access to high-quality information and empower learning. This article will address these opportunities by providing specific examples of ways in which libraries can collaborate with Wikipedia to achieve the common goal of making information more accessible, while increasing their utility beyond their local community. An overview …

Processes And Strategies For Collaboratively Purchasing Electronic Resources, Sunshine Carter, Danielle Ostendorf
Collaborative Librarianship
Academic libraries collaborate to enhance and expand library services. However, libraries may not pursue collaborative electronic resource acquisitions due to complexity and the lengthy negotiation process. Two University of Minnesota campus libraries conducted a year-long pilot project to investigate intentional and proactive cooperative e-resource acquisitions. This article discusses the key strategies, processes, and lessons learned for collaboratively purchasing content, along with recommended best practices.
