All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
This report presents an analysis of the local economic impact of the MetroHealth System’s campus transformation. The MetroHealth System (“MHS”) Board of Trustees endorsed a campus transformation plan for an $855 million capital project, which includes cost projections for various aspects of the project, including design, construction, and equipment. The transformation plan covers a period of nine years spanning 2015 to 2023. The project involves several new buildings, including a 12-story hospital, a large parking garage, and a central utility plant. The transformation also calls for demolishing outdated buildings to increase the hospital campus’ greenspace and improve its network of …

The summer of 2014 was an exciting time full of announcements and transitions for the City of Cleveland, marking the return of LeBron James to the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Republican National Committee selecting Cleveland to host the 2016 RNC Convention. Two years later, 2016 saw the Cavaliers win the city’s first major sports championship in 52 years; just four weeks later, July 18-21, the City hosted its first Republican National Convention in 80 years.
The old saying, “As Ohio goes, so goes the nation” reflects the importance of the state in national politics; the only two candidates who have …

Volunteer Engagement And Retention: Their Relationship To Community Service Self-Efficacy, Elizabeth Harp, Lisa L. Scherer, Joseph A. Allen
Psychology Faculty Publications
The declining number of U.S. volunteers is troubling, necessitating improved understanding of drivers of volunteer retention such as volunteer engagement. We utilized the job demands-resources model to investigate the moderating role of community service self-efficacy (CSSE) on the relationships between two demands (organizational constraints and role ambiguity) and volunteer engagement. Volunteers (N = 235) from three U.S. nonprofit organizations participated in a survey as part of a volunteer program assessment. Volunteers who encountered greater organizational constraints and role ambiguity were less engaged. In addition, CSSE attenuated the negative relationship between organizational constraints and engagement, but not the negative association …

Impacts Of Migration On Mosuo Cultural Identity: A Case Study Of The Mosuo People In Lijiang, Isabel Ullmann
Impacts Of Migration On Mosuo Cultural Identity: A Case Study Of The Mosuo People In Lijiang, Isabel Ullmann
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
China is currently in the midst of the largest labor migration in human history and yet we know very little about the cultural impact on the migrants themselves. For many ethnic minorities, like the Mosuo, who have been isolated from urban, if not Han, influence for much of their history, this migration is sure to result in some cultural disruption. As a matrilineal culture defined by large extended families traced by the matriline, a distinct, non-exclusive sexual-reproductive system, a housing layout that reflects religious beliefs and social structure, and a fluid interplay of the local ddaba religion and Tibetan Buddhism, …

Regulating The Reguliers: How The Normalization Of Gays And Lesbians In Dutch Society Impacts Lgbtq Nightlife, Laura Jacobs
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This Independent Study Project explores how LGBTQ nightlife is impacted by the changing position of gays and lesbians in Dutch society. Specifically, this project seeks to explore how the normalization and popularization of certain subcommunities of LGBTQ individuals in Amsterdam, lauded as one of the most progressive and gay-friendly cities in the world, influences how people navigate LGBTQ bars, clubs, and parties. Data was obtained by conducting 10 in-depth, semi-structured interviews. This data was then analyzed using Judith Butler’s theory of normalization, recognition, and regulation and Gert Hekma’s theory of homonormativity. The research revealed that despite apparent advancements in LGBTQ …

"Ewondo In The Classes, French For The Masses." Mother-Tongue Education In Yaoundé, Cameroon., Parker Henry
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Cameroon is home to over two hundred eighty native languages coming from three language families, making it one of the most linguistically diverse countries on Earth. Despite this, native languages hold very few domains in Cameroonian society. In recent years, several experimental programs have begun to implement native languages in schools citing that children learn best in their mother tongue. Among these include ELAN-Afrique, an initiative put forth by La Francophonie with the main aim of helping students better learn French by way of their mother tongue. This paper seeks to differentiate the benefits prescribed or expected by overhead actors …

In recent scholarly literature, refugees have proliferated: they are the “political figures par excellence” and “border concepts”; they are understood through their infrastructures, both camps and laws; and they are approached as suffering subjects. But Fassin, Wilhelm-Solomon, and Segatti have a different approach: they understand asylum—or as’lem, the term used by asylum seekers in South Africa—as a form of life.

Why Congress Does Not Challenge Judicial Supremacy, Neal Devins
Why Congress Does Not Challenge Judicial Supremacy, Neal Devins
William & Mary Law Review
Members of Congress largely acquiesce to judicial supremacy both on constitutional and statutory interpretation questions. Lawmakers, however, do not formally embrace judicial supremacy; they rarely think about the courts when enacting legislation. This Article explains why this is so, focusing on why lawmakers have both strong incentive to acquiesce to judicial power and little incentive to advance a coherent view of congressional power. In particular, lawmakers are interested in advancing favored policies, winning reelection, and gaining personal power within Congress. Abstract questions of institutional power do not interest lawmakers and judicial defeats are seen as opportunities to find some other …
Analyzing The Characteristics Of Plants Choosing To Opt-Out Of The Large Combustion Plant Directive, Andrew G. Meyer, Grzegorz Pac
Analyzing The Characteristics Of Plants Choosing To Opt-Out Of The Large Combustion Plant Directive, Andrew G. Meyer, Grzegorz Pac
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
The EU Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD) is a major but largely unstudied environmental regulation. Most of the 1585 large combustion plants in this analysis are electricity supply plants or combined heat and power plants. We find that, controlling for country characteristics and plant size, plants in the electricity supply, combined heat and power, district heating, and paper industries have a higher probability of being opted-out of the emission limit values (ELVs), which necessitates eventual plant closure. Controlling for plant size and industry, increasing the amount of solid fuel or natural gas utilized at a plant is associated with a …

This exhibition highlights the broad development patterns of the great City of Mexico, from its origins as the island capital of the Aztec Empire to its sprawling contemporary contours. Featured elements include significant architectural additions and other urban structures such as plazas and avenues that help to shift the orientation of the city and its life over time. This Neatline map shows how the traditionally West-facing city which was once contained to the original island in the middle of Lake Texococo grows in all directions over time, especially towards the end of the 19th century with the addition of the …
Perception And Articulation Of Own Cultural Otherness In Elite Interview Situations: Challenge Or Repertoire?, Sarah Anne Ganter Sag
Perception And Articulation Of Own Cultural Otherness In Elite Interview Situations: Challenge Or Repertoire?, Sarah Anne Ganter Sag
The Qualitative Report
Increasingly, researchers are conducting studies within a diversity of cultural contexts This paper discusses whether and how the researcher’s own cultural otherness plays a role in academic interview situations. The argument is based on Goffman’s theory of interaction under conditions of otherness and the empirical data from 118 interviews and notes during the years 2007 and 2010 and between 2013 and 2014. The empirical data presented in this paper illustrate how a lack of education, socialisation, and cultivation within the fieldwork context—one’s own cultural otherness—assumes ceremonial and substantial meaning in academic interview situations and merits being the subject of methodological …

Does Variability Across Events Affect Verb Learning In English, Mandarin, And Korean?, Jane B. Childers, Jae H. Paik, Melissa Flores, G. Lai, Megan Dolan
Psychology Faculty Research
Extending new verbs is important in becoming a productive speaker of a language. Prior results show children have difficulty extending verbs when they have seen events with varied agents. This study further examines the impact of variability on verb learning and asks whether variability interacts with event complexity or differs by language. Children (aged 2 1⁄2 to 3 years) in the United States, China, Korea, and Singapore learned verbs linked to simple and complex events. Sets of events included one or three agents, and children were asked to extend the verb at test. Children learning verbs linked to simple movements …

Inferential Style, School Teachers, And Depressive Symptoms In College Students., Caroline M. Pittard, Patrick Pössel, Timothy Lau
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Depressive symptoms affect around half of students at some point during college. According to the hopelessness theory of depression, making negative inferences about stressful events is a vulnerability for developing depression. Negative and socio-emotional teaching behavior can be stressors that are associated with depression in school students. First-time college freshmen completed the Cognitive Style Questionnaire (CSQ), Teaching Behavior Questionnaire (TBQ), and Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). While completing the TBQ, participants reported on a teacher from prior education to college. Multiple regression analysis found significant effects of the independent variables (four teaching behavior types, inferential style, and interactions …
Determinants Of Ipo Underpricing: Tech Vs Non-Tech Industries, Jordan Beck
Determinants Of Ipo Underpricing: Tech Vs Non-Tech Industries, Jordan Beck
Major Themes in Economics
Do firms in the tech industry experience higher levels of underpricing when going public as opposed to firms not in the tech industry? This research uses a linear regression model to analyze the determinants of underpricing in the initial public offering market. The model indicates that underpricing is influenced by the offer price, underwriter quality, and the size of the firm as a measure of risk. This analysis does not find evidence of higher levels of underpricing in the tech industry. Further research could analyze the levels of underpricing over time as an industry matures.
The Gender Pay Gap In College Basketball: Is Discrimination The Driving Factor?, Melissa Ament
The Gender Pay Gap In College Basketball: Is Discrimination The Driving Factor?, Melissa Ament
Major Themes in Economics
A survey of the current literature reveals two main schools of thought regarding the pay gap between coaches in men’s versus women’s NCAA Division I college basketball. The academic literature argues gender discrimination is not the source of the pay gap, while the popular press argues the pay gap is due in part to gender discrimination. A review and analysis of the existing literature finds discrimination is not the source of the pay gap between men’s and women’s college basketball coaches.
The 2008 Financial Recession And Fair Value Accounting, Anthony Hurlburt
The 2008 Financial Recession And Fair Value Accounting, Anthony Hurlburt
Major Themes in Economics
The recent U.S. housing bubble was correlated with lax underwriting standards, flawed housing polices, and Wall Street innovation. At the peak of the housing bubble, the Financial Accounting Standards Board issued standard 157, which provided guidance on fair value accounting. Once the housing market deflated, the standard led many to believe that it was the sole reason asset values collapsed, creating a liquidity crunch and prolonging the financial recession. This paper investigates the causes of the housing bubble and Financial Accounting Standard’s relevance in the aftermath. It finds that fair value accounting simply exposed the poor underwriting standards, bad public …

The Return Of The Machinery Question: Is It Different This Time?, Kaleb Luse
Major Themes in Economics
Recent advances in artificial intelligence have the potential to seriously affect labor markets. Some believe that artificial intelligence will be the end of work for humans. Others believe that artificial intelligence is like any other technological innovation from the past and will create just as many jobs as it destroys. I conclude that while artificial intelligence can bring about many of the benefits of technological change seen in history, it drastically differs from innovations in the past and will result in massive unemployment. To ensure that everyone benefits from this huge step forward, policies need to be developed to accommodate …
