An Analysis Of Science Instruction And Environmental Education In Virginia And Oklahoma, Megan Wing Apr 2017

An Analysis Of Science Instruction And Environmental Education In Virginia And Oklahoma, Megan Wing

Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects

In order to understand how science instruction, and specifically instruction targeting environmental and climate change science, in K-5 classrooms can help form students into responsible and conscientious global citizens, I looked specifically at science education in K-5 curriculum. I explored how the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) currently include environmental education and climate change education and how the SOLs provide the potential for future climate change education. For comparison, and to understand how states other than Virginia value environmental science education in the elementary grades, I considered the current Oklahoma Academic Standards (OASs) for K-5 students. In this paper, I …

Insights From Survivors And Latino Professional Counselors Providing Interventions To Latino Children Affected By Domestic Violence: Implications For Culturally Responsive Interventions And Professional Training, Estela Melgoza Apr 2017

Insights From Survivors And Latino Professional Counselors Providing Interventions To Latino Children Affected By Domestic Violence: Implications For Culturally Responsive Interventions And Professional Training, Estela Melgoza

Dissertations

There is a growing need for intervention models for Latino families experiencing psycho-social issues resulting from domestic violence, given the growth of this population and their experience with this issue. The model needs to be inclusive of culturally attuned interventions, culturally proficiency training for professional counselors, and organizational protocols that will ensure implementation. This investigation included Study I which examined the effectiveness of a culturally responsive therapeutic intervention on a sample of Latino children ages 5-12, “Caritas de Esperanza”. As was hypothesized, children in the experimental group increased their resiliency self-efficacy, self-esteem, and decreased conduct problems and negative emotional symptoms …

Community Corridors Bright Futures: Old Algiers Main Street, Department Of Planning And Urban Studies, University Of New Orleans, Department Of Planning And Urban Studies, University Of New Orleans

Planning and Urban Studies Reports and Presentations

Located just across the river from the French Quarter, Old Algiers is the second oldest neighborhood in New Orleans and is just fifteen minutes from downtown. Since the 1960s, the neighborhood has suffered from disinvestment and lost residents, jobs, and commercial activity, while the proportion of vacant and underutilized lots has grown. Because it did not flood during Hurricane Katrina, Old Algiers did not benefit from many of the public and private resources that helped rebuild and re-energize other parts of the city. Currently, its proximity to downtown, relatively affordable real estate, and rich cultural history make it a prime …

Protecting The Future By Preserving The Past: A Report To The St. John The Baptist Parish Historic Preservation Study Committee, Department Of Planning And Urban Studies, University Of New Orleans

Planning and Urban Studies Reports and Presentations

St. John the Baptist Parish is home to a considerable amount of historic landmarks and neighborhoods. Presently, sixteen properties throughout St. John and the national historic district of Garyville are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Although prestigious, this mostly honorary recognition provides limited legal protections for their preservation (Miller, 2008). As a result, St. John the Baptist Parish has lost a significant amount of historic property. A program to protect the parish’s significant historic and cultural landmarks can help preserve and revitalize areas of established historic value and capitalize on existing parish assets. In fall 2016, …

A Matter Of Health And Safety: Science And The State In Texas Abortion Legislation, Alexis Margaret Maclennan

Sociology ETDs

Objective. To analyze legislative use of the cultural and epistemic authority of science and medical expertise to regulate the practice of medicine in the area of abortion care. Methods. Using qualitative content analysis of 184 pieces of Texas legislative proposals between 1993 and 2015 this research examines how legislators to deploy medical expertise to justify abortion restrictions despite constraints from the courts. Results. Texas legislation co-opts symbols of science and medical expertise including technical language, references to empirical evidence, and a stance of objectivity. Constraints from the courts influence this focus on “medically necessary” measures and objective, scientifically supported regulations. …

Paese Di Accoglienza: Il Successo Di Un Modello Innovativo Di Accoglienza Dei Richiedenti Asilo In Italia, Isabela Arena Secanechia

Senior Capstone Theses

This work discusses Italy's migrant reception system including its flaws and their effects. Furthermore, this work explores an alternative, sustainable model of migrant reception created in Riace, Calabria, that has been successful in varying towns across Italy. Ultimately, this work argues that this system, which is beneficial to both Italians and incoming migrants — specifically asylum seekers — can and should be implemented nationally to counter the current flawed system.

Planning For A Medical Surge Incident: Is Rehabilitation The Missing Link?, Mary Kay Vonderschmidt Apr 2017

Planning For A Medical Surge Incident: Is Rehabilitation The Missing Link?, Mary Kay Vonderschmidt

Dissertations

This study explores planning considerations for patients needing rehabilitative care in the event of mass casualty incidents, in particular, patient surge. While planning for a patient surge usually considers prehospital and hospital care, the final step for many disaster patients, rehabilitation is often overlooked. Rehabilitative care begins in the hospital, before discharge, with the consultation of a physician specialist. By including early physiatrist care there are documented decreases in hospital length of stay, fewer medical complications and better functional outcomes.

Based on past disaster studies, the variables of Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment (START), Injury Severity Score (ISS), and hospital …

Implicit Regulation Of Emotion: Priming Non-Conscious Reappraisal And Suppression During Stress, Sydney Clare Timmer-Murillo Apr 2017

Implicit Regulation Of Emotion: Priming Non-Conscious Reappraisal And Suppression During Stress, Sydney Clare Timmer-Murillo

Master's Theses (2009 -)

As individuals experience the world, they must also appropriately modulate their responses to fit their environment. The manner in which one regulates their emotion can vary greatly and influence a number of factors, including self-reported affect and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA). The majority of research on emotion regulation examines the deliberate, or explicit, regulation of emotion. However, the automatic or implicit regulation of emotion is an important cognitive process that yields several benefits. Recent research demonstrates benefits of using implicit reappraisal; however, no work has been done to examine other implicit strategies. The current study primed implicit reappraisal and suppression …

An Investigation Into The Teaching Of International Public Relations To Undergraduates, Matthew Wisla Apr 2017

An Investigation Into The Teaching Of International Public Relations To Undergraduates, Matthew Wisla

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Currently, most U.S. multinational companies increasingly rely on international markets for revenue and growth. Public relations professionals, whether they are on assignment in a foreign land or based in the U.S. as part of an international team, must possess the skills to communicate effectively with target audiences from other cultures. The purpose of this study is to better understand the international qualifications and background of instructors teaching international public relations to U.S. undergraduates. This study is based on data collected through telephone interviews with select academic thought leaders in the field of teaching international public relations, and a broad email …

Impact Of Cybvervetting On Job Seekers' Social Media Use And Identity Creation, Courtney Powers Apr 2017

Impact Of Cybvervetting On Job Seekers' Social Media Use And Identity Creation, Courtney Powers

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Social media has become an integral part of connecting with others and sharing personal information. As more individuals use social media to express themselves, organizations have begun using these same sites to make hiring decisions in a process called cybervetting. Although some researchers suggest that cybervetting has consequences for self-expression, currently little research has explored how cybervetting impacts job seekers’ social media use and identity creation. Accordingly, this study uses quantitative and qualitative methods to explore how cybervetting impacts job seekers’ social media use and online identity creation. By surveying job-seeking social media users, this study measures the relationships between …

Sex Acculturation And Risk Perceptions: Information Seeking And Processing Among Chinese Students In The U.S., Jieyu Ding Apr 2017

Sex Acculturation And Risk Perceptions: Information Seeking And Processing Among Chinese Students In The U.S., Jieyu Ding

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The number of Chinese students studying in the United States is increasing each year and studying in the U.S. provides them with more access to risk information of sexual activities than that of their counterparts in China. Chinese students in the U.S. have shown higher knowledge level about HIV/STI than Chinese students in China. However, their risk perceptions about HIV/STI are relatively low compared to American students due to a lack of formal sex education and a sex-conservative society. Method: this study collected 385 online surveys via Survey Monkey from Chinese students studying in the U.S. The questionnaire was designed …

A Longitudinal Analysis Of Antiretroviral Adherence Among Young Black Men Who Have Sex With Men, Dexter R. Voisin Apr 2017

A Longitudinal Analysis Of Antiretroviral Adherence Among Young Black Men Who Have Sex With Men, Dexter R. Voisin

Faculty Scholarship

Purpose: Young black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) experience poorer antiretroviral therapy (ART) medication adherence relative to their white counterparts. However, few studies have longitudinally examined factors that may correlate with various classifications of ART adherence among this population, which was the primary aim of this study. Methods: Project nGage was a randomized controlled trial conducted across five Chicago clinics from 2012 to 2015. Survey and medical records data were collected at baseline and 3- and 12-month periods to assess whether psychological distress, HIV stigma, substance use, family acceptance, social support, and self-efficacy predicted ART medication adherence among …

Can The Hopelessness Model Of Depression And The Response Style Theory Be Integrated?, Patrick Pössel, Stephanie Winkeljohn Black Apr 2017

Can The Hopelessness Model Of Depression And The Response Style Theory Be Integrated?, Patrick Pössel, Stephanie Winkeljohn Black

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The hopelessness model (Abramson et al., 1989) and response style theory (Nolen-Hoeksema et al., 1992) have been integrated in various ways, but these integrations have not been compared. German college students (N = 311; mean age = 23.27 years, SD = 6.57 years, 80% female) rated their depressive symptoms, negative inferences, and rumination three times. Findings supported an integrated model where individual inferences predict and interact with the rumination subtype brooding to affect depressive symptoms.

The Mediating Role Of Relational Aggression Between Neuroticism And Couple Attachment And Relationship Quality In Long-Term Committed Relationships, Sarah Annis Eliason Apr 2017

The Mediating Role Of Relational Aggression Between Neuroticism And Couple Attachment And Relationship Quality In Long-Term Committed Relationships, Sarah Annis Eliason

Theses and Dissertations

Much of the literature regarding relational aggression in romantic relationships has focused on the behaviors and outcomes of the actor and victim independently. Additionally, the relationships studied usually cover emerging adult samples, and rarely expand to long-term committed relationships, such as cohabiting or married couples. In this paper I sought to determine if relationally aggressive behaviors in long-term committed relationships over time resulted as a function of individual predictors (e.g. neuroticism), or as a process of couple interactions (e.g. couple attachment); and how these traits directly and indirectly (through relational aggression) influenced relationship quality. An Actor Partner Independence Model (APIM) …

The Effects Of Fluency Training On The Acquisition And Retention Of Secondary Students' Fraction Skills, Jani Dawn Ashbaker Apr 2017

The Effects Of Fluency Training On The Acquisition And Retention Of Secondary Students' Fraction Skills, Jani Dawn Ashbaker

Theses and Dissertations

Secondary students, especially those with learning disabilities, often lack an understanding of computations involving fractions. Much of the secondary math core, especially algebra, requires an understanding of fractions to be able to successfully complete core classes. Instruction on fraction concepts in not part of the secondary core standards. These students are expected to already have this knowledge. There is a need for students with learning disabilities who struggle with fraction computations to receive instruction on fraction concepts in addition to their core instruction. This study used direct instruction and fluency practice as an intervention to teach basic fraction skills to …

Burial Plots: Finding Theatre In The Thanatology Of Colonial North Coast Peru, Connie Ericksen Apr 2017

Burial Plots: Finding Theatre In The Thanatology Of Colonial North Coast Peru, Connie Ericksen

Theses and Dissertations

Spain's invasion of the Andes initiated a social drama unprecedented in the experience of the Andean natives. Spanish and Spanish-conscripted native chroniclers wrote extensively about Inca pageantry, spectacle, and ritual, and hastily attributed pagan belief to performances they witnessed or heard about. With equal haste, the Spanish appropriated performance as means of introducing and enforcing Christianity. In this thesis, I treat performance as the central feature of Andean Colonial transition. Performance may be viewed as an ephemeral feature of the Andean transition but fortunately, in mortuary performances (dealing with death and treatment of the body); there are many theatrical elements …

Validation Of The Transformative Work In Society Index: Christianity, Work, And Economics Integration, John R. Terrill

Industrial-Organizational Psychology Dissertations

In recent years, concern for faith-work integration has evolved from a special interest to a sustained movement within workplace and ecclesiastical communities. This study’s purpose is to validate the Transformative Work in Society Index (TWSI) exploring Christian faith, work, and economics integration within the larger nomological net of workplace spirituality, organizational outcomes, and faith maturity measures. The TWSI incorporates the full affective, behavioral, and cognitive dimensions of what it means to be agentic human beings at work. A total of 405 participants who self-identified as Christians took part in this study (40.2% female; mean age = 46 years; mean as …

Effects Of New Grocery Store Development On Inner-City Neighborhood Residential Prices, Belkis Cerrato Caceres, Jacqueline Geoghegan Apr 2017

Effects Of New Grocery Store Development On Inner-City Neighborhood Residential Prices, Belkis Cerrato Caceres, Jacqueline Geoghegan

Economics

A difference-in-differences approach is used to measure the impact of new inner-city grocery store developments on residential housing values in Worcester, Massachusetts. Using geocoded housing sales from 1988-2011, we develop a hedonic model, exploiting temporal and spatial discontinuities, to identify the effect of 12 new grocery stores on neighborhood housing prices. Results suggest these new stores were associated with an increase in sale prices of nearby homes, and these results could help inform current policies related to urban food deserts, in that new grocery stores have the potential to improve neighborhood wealth as well as health.
