Mothers As Career Leaders: Do Maternity Leave Laws Make A Difference?, Briar Rose Smith
Mothers As Career Leaders: Do Maternity Leave Laws Make A Difference?, Briar Rose Smith
Honors Theses
On a national level, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993 is the only law that provides certain qualifying individuals with 12 weeks of unpaid, job protected maternity leave, although some states and private firms have implemented forms of paid maternity leave. Previous research indicates that female employees, regardless of their parental status, receive fewer promotions due to information asymmetry after the FMLA (Thomas 2015). In addition, some research finds that particular industries are more family friendly due to access to flexible work schedules for mothers (Goldin 2014). This thesis expands on both findings using data from the …
The Promise Of Justice: Are Public And Private Defense Equal?, Alicia Linzmeier
The Promise Of Justice: Are Public And Private Defense Equal?, Alicia Linzmeier
Honors Theses
This thesis attempts to uncover whether or not differences in unclassified felony and first-degree felony case outcomes arise as a result of the type of counsel representing the defendant. The types of defense counsel addressed in this project include public defenders, appointed counsel, and private counsel. This research project specifically focuses on Butler, Greene, and Montgomery Counties in Ohio, in order to cultivate large enough samples for statistical testing. The felony cases that were examined include aggravated murder, murder, rape, voluntary manslaughter, and kidnapping. Existing research (Cohen, 2014; Levine, 1975; Hartley, Miller, and Spohn, 2010; and Williams, 2002) largely shows …
Dictation And Delegation In Securities Regulation, Usha Rodrigues
Dictation And Delegation In Securities Regulation, Usha Rodrigues
Indiana Law Journal
When Congress undertakes major financial reform, either it dictates the precise con-tours of the law itself or it delegates the bulk of the rule making to an administrative agency. This choice has critical consequences. Making the law self-executing in federal legislation is swift, not subject to administrative tinkering, and less vulnerable than rule making to judicial second-guessing. Agency action is, in contrast, deliberate, subject to ongoing bureaucratic fiddling, and more vulnerable than statutes to judicial challenge.
This Article offers the first empirical analysis of the extent of congressional delegation in securities law from 1970 to the present day, examining nine …
Post-Racialism And The End Of Strict Scrutiny, David Schraub
Post-Racialism And The End Of Strict Scrutiny, David Schraub
Indiana Law Journal
In recent years, a growing social consensus has emerged around the aspiration of a “post-racial” America: one where race is no longer a fault line for social strife or, perhaps, a morally significant trait whatsoever. This ambition, however, lies in tension with the most basic constitutional principle governing our treatment of race in the public sphere: that of “strict scrutiny.” Post-racialism seeks to diminish the salience of race to near negligibility. The strict scrutiny of racial classifications, by contrast, significantly enhances the salience of race by treating it differently from virtually every other personal attribute or characteristic—including hair or eye …
Eliminating Circuit-Split Disparities In Federal Sentencing Under The Post-Booker Guidelines, Elliot Edwards
Eliminating Circuit-Split Disparities In Federal Sentencing Under The Post-Booker Guidelines, Elliot Edwards
Indiana Law Journal
This Note will explore the rarely discussed consequences that result when courts of appeals freely interpret the Sentencing Guidelines. This Note will not address appellate review of sentences in general, nor will it discuss disparities caused by trial courts. Instead, the discussion below will address a very specific situation, namely when a court of appeals vacates a sentence because, in its estimation, the trial court misapplied the Guidelines. Part I will relate the history of the recent sentencing re-form movement in America, noting particularly which bodies have the authority to decide sentencing policy. Part II will then analyze the interpretive …

What Happens When Social Pressures Collide? The Role Of Environmental Pressures Throughout Life, Jeffrey Lyons
What Happens When Social Pressures Collide? The Role Of Environmental Pressures Throughout Life, Jeffrey Lyons
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
How do competing social influences shape individual partisanship over the course of the life cycle? People enter and exit a host of environments over the course of the lifespan, and these environments provide social pressures that can conflict or reinforce early socialized attitudes. Socialization could be an agent for either opinion change, or opinion stability. Using the Youth-Parent Socialization Study and constructing partisan environmental measures at the county-level, I explore this question. The findings demonstrate that environments exert significant socializing influence over the lifespan, moderating the persistence of early forces. This helps to reconcile two competing perspectives on the enduring …

Physical Activity And Coping Tactics In Undergraduate Students, Talegria Brown
McNair Scholars Research Journal
8 Physical Activity and Coping Tactics in Undergraduate Students Talegria Brown: McNair Scholar Dr. Mary Pritchard: Mentor Psychology Abstract College can be stressful, making it important for students to have effective coping mechanisms in place. While some research has examined how college students deal with stress, very little has examined the effectiveness of physical activity as a coping mechanism for college students. The present study did just that. College students enrolled in Introductory Psychology completed A Quantitative Assessment of Stress Tolerance (Bland, Melton, Bigham, & Welle, 2014). This survey assessed college student stress levels and coping tactics. We also assessed …

Ethnographies of Parkland Student Life
This poster is the result of an ethnography assignment for Anthropology 103.
The aim of this research project was to answer two questions: How does the use of personal technology impact interactions between students and non-academic college employees, such as receptionists, cashiers and advisors? How does the use of personal technology impact how the student interacts with the professor, inside the classroom and out? The primary focus of the study was not to gather empirical data, but to observe and record the perceptions and reactions of participants.
Marketing To Parkland College Students: The Shadowed Market, Willie Morris
Marketing To Parkland College Students: The Shadowed Market, Willie Morris
Ethnographies of Parkland Student Life
This poster is the result of an ethnography assignment for Anthropology 103. For this research project the student interviewed the managers of several local businesses in Champaign, Illinois, to find out how they market to Parkland College students. He found that almost none of the businesses specifically market to Parkland students and only 1 in 5 businesses had associations with the college. He also concluded that Parkland College students are a hidden market overshadowed by a much larger university. This is likely due to the international prestige and worldwide popularity of the University of Illinois, as well as the university’s …

Pathway To Pathways: Examining Influences For Choosing Parkland Pathways, Tabitha Hanson
Ethnographies of Parkland Student Life
This poster is the result of an ethnography assignment for Anthropology 103. The Student conducted a research project that examines why students choose to enroll in the Pathways program at Parkland as opposed to: 1) becoming a non-Pathways Parkland student who will transfer to the University of Illinois; or 2) Beginning their college career at the University of Illinois. Her research shows that most local students who know about Parkland and have a strong interest in attending the University of Illinois consider the Parkland Pathways program as the best option.
To What Degree Do Retail Electricity Prices Inform Residential Solar Energy Investment Decisions?, Megan M. Davitt
To What Degree Do Retail Electricity Prices Inform Residential Solar Energy Investment Decisions?, Megan M. Davitt
Economics Honors Projects
The relationship between electricity price and household solar photovoltaic (PV) adoption has not been thoroughly studied. How much would a carbon tax, and increase in electricity price, spur growth in residential solar? This paper adds to the literature with a utility-level panel analysis. Consumer choice theory provides the framework for the empirical models. I use electricity price and net metered solar PV capacity data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA). Through a variety of specifications, I control for both utility and state-year effects. My findings suggest that electricity price is significantly positively correlated with solar adoption, with an estimated price …

Lump Sum Vs Annuity Payments: Which Is Right For Me?, Pension Action Center, Gerontology Institute, University Of Massachusetts Boston
Pension Action Center Publications
As employers are looking to reduce pension plan liabilities, more and more participants are being given the option to receive a one-time lump sum payment from their pension plan in lieu of receiving monthly annuity payments for life. Deciding on which form of pension benefit to take is a very important decision that requires careful consideration. Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. While a lump sum may make sense for one person, it may be a serious mistake for another. And it is a decision that you will have to live with for the rest of your life. Anyone who …

Timelines And Trade Chat: Comparing Contextual Self-Disclosure And Perceived Social Capital On Social Networking Sites And Massively Multiplayer Online Games, Ryan P. Castillo
Masters Theses
This study examines the associations between usage intensity, user motivations, and contextual self-disclosure, and social capital on two popular online mediums, Facebook and World of Warcraft. Contributing to the efforts of previous research, which has found both online gaming communities and social networking sites to positively affect access to informational and social support, this analysis shows that intimate self-disclosure in each online medium differs not only in context, but in its impact on dimensions of social capital, and that the various effects of self-disclosure on social capital can be attributed to differences in communicative affordances and community held standards of …

Compounded Inequities: Assessing School Finance Equity For Low-Income English Language Learners, David S. Knight, Jesus E. Mendoza
Working Papers
School districts face different costs to produce the same level of educational opportunity because of differences in student population, geographical costs of living, and district size. However, in many states, the school finance system fails to take these factors into account when distributing funds to school districts. Most prior analyses of state school finance systems focus on the relationship between district funding and the percent of low-income students in that district or the percent of emergent bilinguals, who are typically classified as English language learners (ELLs).
We present the first longitudinal descriptive evidence of the extent to which state school …
The Trump Effect On Federal Education Policy: How Federal Actions On The Every Student Succeeds Act Affect Schools Nationally, In Texas, And In The El Paso Region, David S. Knight
Policy Briefs
This policy brief provides background on recent changes to federal education policy under the Trump Administration and reports the findings from a new study from the Center for Education Research and Policy Studies (CERPS). Following the passing of the Every Student Succeed Act (ESSA), the Education Department developed regulations that would govern the law’s implementation through a procedure known as the Rulemaking Process. One of the key provisions required school districts with large achievement gaps to equalize funding across schools. However, in March 2017, Congress moved to block all previously established regulations for implementing ESSA. Under Secretary DeVos, the Education …
