Big Data's Impact On Privacy For Librarians And Information Professionals, Lindsey M. Harper, Shannon M. Oltmann
Big Data's Impact On Privacy For Librarians And Information Professionals, Lindsey M. Harper, Shannon M. Oltmann
Librarian Research
In a digital age, it is very difficult to maintain complete privacy when posting on social media or making purchases. Individual activity on the internet is increasingly collected by corporations, even with the user’s knowledge, and can be used to predict future behavior, purchasing choices or other sensitive subjects. This data analysis is often done without a user’s consent and in many cases presents unethical behavior and breaches of privacy. Big data can be beneficial to libraries in many ways, and if pointed at library systems, rather than the habits of patrons, can also keep privacy intact.

Strategic Pr Meets Digital Scholarship, Ady Dewey
Strategic Public Relations Projects
The 2017 strategic public relations (COMM 347) created a campaign to increase faculty’s awareness of the pedagogical benefits of digital scholarship and the work being done by faculty. While there are various definitions of the term “digital scholarship,” the class approached it as an opportunity to rethink traditional assessment tools by using different technologies to aid students in creating digital projects for a public audience. Digital scholarship is a critical direction for higher education to ensure students graduate with knowledge of digital tools regardless of their field of study. The requesting clients for the project were the College’s instructional designer …

Moving Forward By Looking Back Hunting/Gathering Societies And Models For The Future, Irene J. Dabrowski, Anthony L. Haynor
Moving Forward By Looking Back Hunting/Gathering Societies And Models For The Future, Irene J. Dabrowski, Anthony L. Haynor
Praxis Presentations
This paper reviews and assesses recent scholarship that focuses on the lessons that contemporary societies can learn from our hunting/gathering ancestors. The paper examines social organization for 99% of human history, with particular attention given to dominant “relational structures”: and modes of adaptation (cognitive, appreciative, moral, and technical) to the “physico-chemical, “organic,” and “telic” environments, on the institutional, symbolic, and self-identity levels. The paper then goes on to sketch fundamental relational and adaptive shifts as a result of the agricultural, industrial, digital revolutions, as well as scenarios for the emerging transhumanist age (involving the increasing merger of human and machine).

Canceling Serials Based On Their Availability In Aggregated Full-Text Databases, Anthony Raymond
Canceling Serials Based On Their Availability In Aggregated Full-Text Databases, Anthony Raymond
Staff publications, research, and presentations
Canceling an individual serial subscription when the journal is available in a third-party aggregated full-text database (AFTD) has been an option for academic libraries since these databases came into wide use in the late 1990s, yet little discussion of this option has taken place in the literature. Third-party aggregated full-text databases refer to products sold by companies that do not themselves publish journals but only distribute journal content - for example, various well known products sold by EBSCO and ProQuest and some open access databases such as Project Muse. This article looks at several case studies that discuss this option …
The Role Of Catholic Schools In Reducing Educational And Economic Inequality, Laura Nichols
The Role Of Catholic Schools In Reducing Educational And Economic Inequality, Laura Nichols
Sociology
In this paper, I look specifically at Catholic colleges in the United States and compare their student enrollment and graduation rates to other types of colleges, and ask if Catholic colleges continue to play a role as levers of economic mobility for students, or if they are reproducing the social class status of their families. Combining institutional data from the College Scorecard and the Equality of Opportunity Project, my analysis shows that Catholic colleges in the U.S. have higher graduation rates than public and other private schools, but they enroll a lower proportion of students who are low income. Catholic …
Decreasing Social Isolation Through An Intergenerational Social Engagement Program, Jacqueline Kendona
Decreasing Social Isolation Through An Intergenerational Social Engagement Program, Jacqueline Kendona
Doctor of Occupational Therapy Capstone Projects
Social isolation is the absence of meaningful contact with others. Older adults who perceived themselves as socially isolated are at risk of negative health outcomes. A person’s psychological wellbeing can be improved through engaging in meaningful leisure activities.
The Intergenerational Social Engagement Program, or the ISEP, was developed to connect older adults and high school students to help decrease social isolation in older adults. The ISEP incorporates concepts from the Canadian Model of Occupational Performance and is intended for implementation in senior living communities. The program is to be led by an occupational therapist. Occupational therapy practitioners have an understanding …

Maternal Autonomy And Child Health Care Utilization: Evidence From Bangladesh, Ashiqul Alam
Maternal Autonomy And Child Health Care Utilization: Evidence From Bangladesh, Ashiqul Alam
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2017
My research looked into the relationship between maternal autonomy and how child health care is utilized in third world countries. I worked with my professor, Dr. Bibhudutta Panda, to specifically look at Bangladesh as our country of interest. The country itself is smaller than Florida but is ranked number 8 for the most populated country. In Bangladesh the infant mortality rate is 6 times more than the US, at 30.7 per 1000 live births and government expenditure is also low. The main reason behind to pick Bangladesh is also that it is a third world country and also a patriarchal …

Best Practices For Online Tutorials In Academic Libraries, Kari Haynes
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2017
In a world that is increasingly dependent on technology, libraries must find ways to harness this tool to stay relevant to the communities they serve. For example, Briggs Library offers onsite training as well as online tutorials to reach all types of users. The purpose of my literature review and research was to identify the best practices for online. This was achieved by locating academic sources that described how other university libraries created effective online tutorials. I came to the conclusion that effective online tutorials meet diverse student learning needs by using similar teaching strategies. Furthermore, the various universities made …
Surgical Skill And Video Games: A Meta-Analytic Review, Tyler Anthony Menzies
Surgical Skill And Video Games: A Meta-Analytic Review, Tyler Anthony Menzies
CUP Undergraduate Research
As the popularity of video games has grown over the past decade, so has interest in their capacity to serve as tools for education. The technology behind modern laparoscopic surgery draws strong parallels to modern video games, and as such has inspired initial research into the potential relationship between video game play and surgical performance. To date, a number of researchers have conducted studies on this relationship; however, no structured, statistical review of accessible data has taken place. Thus, the goal of this analysis was to examine the available literature and report the significance of the cumulative findings. Through my …
Enhanced Response Plan For Woodland Primary School, Brian Harper
Enhanced Response Plan For Woodland Primary School, Brian Harper
CUP Undergraduate Research
The city of Woodland, Washington sits along the very busy north and south railroad line that connects Portland and Vancouver with the Tacoma and Seattle areas and beyond. Each day over a dozen trains carrying a vast assortment of cargo goes rumbling by, some of it is mundane and some are volatile. What is very worrisome is that the Woodland Primary School is only a hundred meters from the tracks. Although remote, there is always the possibility of a train derailment close to the school. The local emergency services have plans for a train derailment, they fall under their standard …

Practicum Methods And Research: East County Fire & Rescue Eop Scope, Kyle Henderson
CUP Undergraduate Research
East County Fire & Rescue (ECFR) operates in and around the city of Camas, Washington. This small fire and rescue entity is tasked with a plethora of daily responsibility ranging from medical emergencies to forested emergency issues. Because ECFR is tucked in with Vancouver Fire & Rescue as well as the Camas Fire Department, they are reliant upon each other in emergency situations to carry out mitigation, response, reaction and recovery strategies. Having a detailed Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) that includes hazards analysis, capabilities assessments and other concepts of operations is essential to having every operating entity on the same …
Experience Of Adults With Special Needs In Sexual Education Programs, Kate C. Hallissey
Experience Of Adults With Special Needs In Sexual Education Programs, Kate C. Hallissey
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
Adults with special needs are discouraged from exploring their sexuality, expressing it, accessing sexual health care, and learning about their sexual rights. As a result, this population experiences higher rates of sexually transmitted diseases and sexual abuse than the general population (Saxe & Flanagan, 2014). Adults with special needs deserve to receive sexual education programming that provides them with the information they need to make informed choices about sexuality and relationships. Understanding their experiences in sexual education programs can better inform future programming for this population.

Sexual assault often results in survivors experiencing Post traumatic stress disorder or depression. The phenomena of treating survivors in therapy after a sexual assault, has been researched thoroughly from the view of clients. Qualitative research done from therapists experiences is not as abundant in the literature. Therapists experiences treating female survivors of sexual abuse was explored, using a phenomenological research method. Examining therapist's perspective on providing therapy with survivors, can support other therapists working with women who have survived a sexual assault

Veterans Experience Using Acupuncture As An Alternative Treatment, Stacy Leet
Veterans Experience Using Acupuncture As An Alternative Treatment, Stacy Leet
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
There is growing dissatisfaction within the veteran community with their conventional health care options. This dissatisfaction has led to an increase in seeking complementary and alternative treatments, like acupuncture. There is increased need to understand the experience of veterans who use acupuncture as an alternative treatment for their physical or mental health care needs. This phenomenological study interviewed veterans (n=6) to gain a deeper understanding of their experiences using acupuncture as alternative treatment. The outcomes of this study will add to the knowledge base and provide social workers and health providers a wider range of care options that will continue …
The Student Experience Of Sexual Education In Maine Public Schools, Grace Nevins, Michael Johnston
The Student Experience Of Sexual Education In Maine Public Schools, Grace Nevins, Michael Johnston
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
The modern sexual climate of the Unites States often contradicts the moral values taught to young people in sexual education classes in the public school system. Studies have shown that the traditional “abstinence only” method, which was made popular during the 1990’s, was ineffective in the prevention of young pregnancy and the reduction in sexually transmitted diseases (Schwarz, 2007). Teenagers are increasingly exposed to more sexualized content through a variety of media; however, this often contradicts the messages they receive in schools, particularly the “abstinence only” educational model.

Weather Variability And The Tourism Industry: A Panel Data Analysis, Carmela Coppola
Weather Variability And The Tourism Industry: A Panel Data Analysis, Carmela Coppola
Honors Projects in Economics
Increasing weather variability around the world has led to many researchers examining the impacts of weather variability on vulnerable industries. For example, the tourism industry can make up a large portion of an economy’s growth, with some of the most dependent countries relying on tourism for over 40% of GDP (World Travel & Tourism Council 2014). In an attempt to better understand the relationship between weather variability and the tourism industry at the country level, this study employs a series of fixed effects panel regression models to analyze the impact of rainfall and temperature on tourism levels and growth rates …

Around the world, governments are coping with spiraling health care spending. This spurs the need for further insight in the determinants of such expenditures. This study investigates the determinants of health care expenditures for a sample of thirty five countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) from 2000 to 2013 in order to understand the impact of different factors on health care spending growth. Besides Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the study accounts for many different driving forces such as demographics, medical progress, health system characteristics, public financing, and other non-medical determinants of health spending such as alcohol …
The Impact Of Logistics Performance On The Success Of Trade Agreements, Kevin Arbeiter
The Impact Of Logistics Performance On The Success Of Trade Agreements, Kevin Arbeiter
Honors Projects in Management
The purpose of this capstone project is to determine whether or not it is possible to predict the success and effectiveness of new trade agreements by looking at fundamental factors associated with efficient supply chain management. Typically, free trade agreements are analyzed using economic factors such as Gross Domestic Product or labor gains and losses. When this is done to determine whether or not a trade agreement is successful, it is usually backwards looking and too late for a country to opt out without economic repercussions. The aim of this study is to determine whether it is possible to predict …
