The Unconscious Victim Of Quiescence, Ally Daskalopoulos Apr 2017

The Unconscious Victim Of Quiescence, Ally Daskalopoulos

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

John Gaventa describes his investigation into the lives of Appalachian coal miners as an “account of the local injustices,” (Gaventa 1980 v.). The same can be said for this investigation into the Vanderbilt Rape Trial. Similar to the accounts of Central Appalachia, an act of “local injustice” occurred on the campus of Vanderbilt University in the summer of 2013. The realities of the high profile Vanderbilt Rape case are compared and applied to the framework of power Gaventa specifies in Power and Powerlessness. The parallels between both cases are undeniable and ultimately serve one purpose for their comparison. Like Gaventa, …

Jefferson’S West Point - A Durable Political Change, Preslav Mantchev Apr 2017

Jefferson’S West Point - A Durable Political Change, Preslav Mantchev

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

This essay evaluates a variety of national security visions put forth between the Revolution and War of 1812. It uncovers how a professional army became the prevailing national security apparatus during America’s nascent years. Additionally, special attention is given to Thomas Jefferson’s role in the process, which culminated in the establishment of a military academy at West Point. The essay argues that the academy’s creation advanced a professional army with characteristics particular for its time: a diverse and egalitarian force, bound to the ideals of republicanism.

The Madisonian Standard For Conceptualizing American Citizenship, Maddie E. Browning-Perry Apr 2017

The Madisonian Standard For Conceptualizing American Citizenship, Maddie E. Browning-Perry

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

American political development was fashioned by a social contract. More specifically, the American republic evolved through the Madisonian social contract, an agreement premised on James Madison’s intention that deliberative citizenship would collaborate with decentralized government in order to advance the public good. This paper identifies the problem with the Madisonian contract today, that the relationship between citizens and government, or rather, Congress, is one that is infused with antagonism and a record high level of distrust. This present-day characterization of the broken relationship between citizens and Congress is symptomatic of a deteriorated Madisonian contract. Public opinion polls cast the illusion …

The Payoff Of A Healthy Lifestyle While In College, Richard D. Angeletti Iii

Undergraduate Economic Review

This study analyzes the effect that an individual’s body mass index (BMI) has on their hourly compensation in their next job directly following attainment of their bachelor degree. This study uses the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth that started in 1997. This study aligned all the survey participants’ timeline of life events to be coordinated in such a way that bachelor degree attainment, regardless of year, is the common reference point. Sufficient observation of bachelor degree receipts was found in the year 2001 through 2007 resulting in a pooled data set across seven years. This study hypothesizes that individuals with …

Retention, Mentorship, And Servant Leadership: An Analysis For Retaining 2050’S Generals In Today’S Army, Owen J. Ryckman

M.A. in Leadership Studies: Capstone Project Papers

This paper seeks to explore existing research involving why junior officers are choosing to leave the Army, the benefits of mentorship, and the use of servant leadership. The intent is to show that if the Army were attempt to use a servant leadership lens to develop junior officers through mentorship, more junior officers would be willing to make the Army a career. It is important to note that the mentorship cannot be mandatory, it must happen organically for it to be successful. For the mentorship to happen organically, senior leaders must be more willing to identify junior leaders they would …

Repeat After Me: Dance Program Evaluation For The Friendship Circle, Michelle Sire Apr 2017

Repeat After Me: Dance Program Evaluation For The Friendship Circle, Michelle Sire

Honors Projects

Approximately 1 in 6 children in the United States are diagnosed with one or more developmental disabilities or delays (Boyle et al., 2011). Although the number of therapeutic approaches for children with developmental disabilities has increased, no single treatment or combination of treatments is effective in relieving symptoms for all individuals (Scharoun, Reinders, Bryden & Fletcher, 2014). Therefore, there is a need to continue to explore alternative therapeutic methods. Research over the past twenty years has found dance/movement therapy (DMT) to be an effective form of treatment for children with special needs, specifically in terms of functioning and well-being. However, …

Smile, Dictator, You’Re On Camera, Joy A. Buchanan, Matthew K. Mcmahon, Matthew Simpson, Bart J. Wilson

ESI Publications

We investigate the degree to which people in a shopping mall express other-regarding behavior in the dictator game. Whereas many studies have attempted to increase the social distance between the dictator and experimenter and between the dictator and dictatee, we attempt to minimize that social distance between random strangers by video recording the decisions with the permission of the dictators to display their image on the Internet. Offers made by dictators are high relative to other experiments and a nontrivial number give the entire experimental windfall away, however a nontrivial number of people keep everything as well.

The Rise Of Stalin And Mussolini: The Importance Of Historical Context In The Study Of Leader Emergence, Patrick Hughes

Jepson School of Leadership Studies Research Symposium

This study uses historical comparisons of Joseph Stalin and Benito Mussolini to better understand the factors that contribute to leader emergence. Leader effectiveness is not evaluated in this study. The focus of these historical inquires is early ascensions to power during the early to mid-1920s. The factors that contribute to leader emergence can be divided into the categories of 1. individual traits and skills and 2. social, cultural, and political contexts of the follower base. The conclusion of these historical analyses is that leader emergence is facilitated as an interaction between historical contexts and the traits and skills of the …

The Effect Of Routine Adult Phq-2 Depression Screen And Scheduled Follow-Up Protocol In The Primary Care Setting, Alex F. Bikowski Apr 2017

The Effect Of Routine Adult Phq-2 Depression Screen And Scheduled Follow-Up Protocol In The Primary Care Setting, Alex F. Bikowski

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Healthy People has projected depression to be the primary cause of disability by 2020; therefore routine depression screening has been prioritized as a national healthcare initiative. The purpose of this Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) project is to demonstrate that routine implementation of the 2-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) depression screener, along with a scheduled follow-up protocol for adults in the primary care setting, can improve current mental health practices regarding the identification of depression by clinicians. The evidence supports use of the PHQ-2 for routine adult depression screening, as long as a scheduled follow-up protocol is available for positive screens. This …

The Benefits Of Swir Imagery For Archaeological Landscape Analysis: A Case Study From Easter Island (Rapa Nui), Chile, Dylan Davis, Carl Lipo Apr 2017

The Benefits Of Swir Imagery For Archaeological Landscape Analysis: A Case Study From Easter Island (Rapa Nui), Chile, Dylan Davis, Carl Lipo

Research Days Posters 2016-2019

"The use of multispectral imagery is particularly effective for mapping the archaeological record of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) due to the island’s lack of vegetation and exposed surficial lithic features. In 2010, Flaws demonstrated that near-infrared (NIR) imagery can be used to identify “lithic mulch” gardens, areas of cultivation that are enhanced through the prehistoric addition of broken bedrock. Here, we evaluate newly available, high-resolution short-wave infrared (SWIR) imagery for its potential to provide additional resolution and discrimination in mapping “lithic mulch” features."

Resource Scarcity And Monumental Architecture: Cost Signaling On Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Chile, Dylan Davis, Carl P. Lipo

Research Days Posters 2016-2019

Costly signaling theory (CST) explains a variety of elaborate behavioral displays as a consequence of competition over resources when the risk of direct conflict is high. Within an archaeological context, monumental architecture is potentially explained as a facet of costly signaling between individuals and groups. On Rapa Nui, CST offers an explanation for the construction of labor-intensive monuments including massive statues (moai) and ceremonial platforms (ahu). Using hypotheses derived from CST and spatial data about the distribution of archaeological features, the degree to which CST accounts for the investment in prehistoric monumental architecture on Rapu Nui is evaluated.

The Friend Zone: An In/Inite Place Where Nothing Good Happens: A Comprehensive Study Of Friend Zoning Across Varying Genders And Sexual Orientations, Lillian Harrington, Allison Butler, Mariel Boyle, Taylor Goodman, Shai Katz, Morgan Cinnamo, Ann M. Merriwether, Sean Massey

Research Days Posters 2016-2019

"“Friend zone” is a popular culture term used to describe a friendship where one member in a friend dyad desires a romantic or sexual relationship and the other member does not. Sexual Script Theory (Simon & Gagnon, 2003) and Sexual Strategies Theory (Buss & Schmidt, 1993) suggest that individuals will typically view the friend zone as a Qield dominated by female-to-male interactions, given sexual scripts on women as gatekeepers and men as being more active in initiating relationships. It may be expected then that men and women and individuals who are not exclusively heterosexual may then follow different scripts for …

On, March 4th, 2017, Donald Trump claimed, without evidence, that Barack Obama wiretapped the phones at Trump Tower during the presidential election. This is not the first baseless claim that Trump has made about the former president. As the American population is well aware, Trump was one of the most vocal participants in the birther movement. Even after Obama made his birth certificate public, proving that he was born in Hawaii in 1961, Trump said, in an interview with ABC News, ”Was it a birth certificate? You tell me. Some people say that was not his birth certificate. Maybe it …

The Question Queue: The Federal Government Wants To Know So Much More About A Proposed Nuclear Waste Site Near Lake Huron, It Seems It Will Never Get The Ok, Erika Simpson

Political Science Publications

Ontario Power Generation’s proposal for a deep geologic repository (DGR) to store nuclear waste near Lake Huron faces significant scrutiny from the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency. The agency has demanded detailed responses from OPG regarding alternative sites, potential environmental impacts, and construction effects. Questions include concerns about emissions, seismic regulations, and the impact on indigenous communities and local ecosystems. The agency also requires more comprehensive risk assessments for various scenarios, including accidents and environmental degradation. The approval process is complicated by these extensive requirements, potentially delaying the project beyond upcoming federal and provincial elections.
