Flourishing In Emerging Adulthood: An Understudied Approach To The Third Decade Of Life, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Larry J. Nelson
Flourishing In Emerging Adulthood: An Understudied Approach To The Third Decade Of Life, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Larry J. Nelson
Faculty Publications
There is a growing body of literature that suggests that the third decade of life is anything but a time to foster positive development. Indeed, emerging adulthood has been referred to as a time of arrested development during which young people avoid responsibilities that are thought to be typical of adulthood (Cote, 2000), and instead engage in behaviors they feel they will not be able to enjoy once they become adults (e.g., travel, exploration of substance use and sexual experience, living a carefree life-style; Ravert, 2009). Emerging adults have been referred to as "Generation Me" and are increasingly typified as …
Documenting Documentaries: Flotsam Of Prejudice, Rebecca Schiff
Documenting Documentaries: Flotsam Of Prejudice, Rebecca Schiff
Publications and Research
As an academic librarian working on a research paper dealing with the collection development of documentary films about the Romani people and whether such films can dispel or deconstruct many of the cultural, historical, sometimes fanciful distortions and stereotypes confronting them today, I was nonetheless still surprised at the misconceptions I came across floating around in the popular imagination. The encounters I had with students, faculty, and librarians further alerted me as to how pervasive the misunderstandings of the dominant culture and its projected fantasies onto the Roma continue to be. The incidents span from the student who, after a …
A Study Of The Effectiveness Of The Crisis Care & Counseling Course Within The Special Operations Forces At The Joint Special Operations University, Mary Ann Quartetti
A Study Of The Effectiveness Of The Crisis Care & Counseling Course Within The Special Operations Forces At The Joint Special Operations University, Mary Ann Quartetti
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
The Special Operations Forces have experienced a surge in PTSD and suicides in the past several years, now surpassing conventional military branches. Due to the attached stigma for seeking help from mental health professions and potential negative career effects, military personnel are more likely to seek counseling from their unit chaplain. The U.S. military does not require chaplains to have a counseling degree or certification in counseling as a prerequisite to performing duties as a chaplain, although most Masters of Divinity programs do include some counseling courses. The military does provide limited training to its chaplains in counseling. Special Operations …
The Influence Of Perceptions On Entrepreneurial Success, Josiah P. Peterson
The Influence Of Perceptions On Entrepreneurial Success, Josiah P. Peterson
Selected Honors Theses
The purpose of this work is to investigate and identify the influence of perceptions on entrepreneurial success. Entrepreneurs have been identified as instrumental to the economic survival of society and have therefore become the focus of an increasingly large number of studies. This thesis will expound upon those studies by focusing on aspects of the studies that pertain to entrepreneurial perceptions and success. This work will focus on three types of perceptions and how they influence success. It will focus on the perceptions the entrepreneurs have of themselves, the perceptions they have of their environments and the perceptions others have …

Transport Planning In Delft, Netherlands, Jan Nederveen
Transport Planning In Delft, Netherlands, Jan Nederveen
PSU Transportation Seminars
While the Netherlands is known today for the highest bicycling rates in the world, this movement only began in the 1970s. Transportation policy has been one of the critical keys to reducing automobile trips in the Netherlands.
Visiting scholar Jan Nederveen will present on transportation planning in the compact, densely populated city of Delft. Delft has been a city since 1246, and the historic street pattern is still visible today. The city has grown to 100,000 residents and covers an area of 5 square kilometers. Twenty years ago, the council decided to change the transportation philosophy from a car-oriented system …
"I Think, Therefore I Do": Cognitions Related To Flourishing In Emerging Adulthood, Larry J. Nelson, Nathan A. Jorgensen, Adam A. Rogers
"I Think, Therefore I Do": Cognitions Related To Flourishing In Emerging Adulthood, Larry J. Nelson, Nathan A. Jorgensen, Adam A. Rogers
Faculty Publications
The focus of this volume is to bring greater attention to the ways in which many young people flourish during the third decade of life. In doing so, the majority of the chapters have focused on the things that emerging adults do that reflect positive development (e.g., volunteerism, service, political activism, education, preparation for careers). It may be, however, that the very way in which young cognitively approach the third decade might influence whether they flourish or flounder. Also, it may be that how they view adulthood (i.e., the fourth decade of life and beyond) might have bearing on what …
Positive Relationships As An Indicator Of Flourishing During Emerging Adulthood, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Madison K. Memmott-Elison, Larry J. Nelson
Positive Relationships As An Indicator Of Flourishing During Emerging Adulthood, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Madison K. Memmott-Elison, Larry J. Nelson
Faculty Publications
In any discussion about flourishing in emerging adulthood, it would be easy to simply think about the positive things that young people do (e.g., pursue education, volunteer, serve, engage in political activism). However, few emerging adults walk the path toward adulthood alone. They embark on and make their way through the third decade of life within a myriad of complex relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners. However, the changing nature of these relationships is arguably more complex than at any other point in their lives to date. Graduation (for most) from high school brings the dissolution of many peer …
