Unconventional Wisdom: Estimating The Economic Impact Of The Democratic And Republican National Political Conventions, Victor Matheson, Lauren R. Heller, E. Frank Stephenson
Unconventional Wisdom: Estimating The Economic Impact Of The Democratic And Republican National Political Conventions, Victor Matheson, Lauren R. Heller, E. Frank Stephenson
Economics Department Working Papers
We use daily hotel occupancy, price, and revenue data to analyze the economic impact of the 2008 and 2012 Democratic and Republican National Conventions. We find that political conventions generate approximately 29,000 room nights of lodging, though this figure is offset by lower hotel occupancy during the week before and, to a lesser extent, after conventions. Conventions increase hotel revenue by approximately $20 million on average, a figure which suggests that host cities’ claims of economic impacts of $150 million or more may be implausible.

Unconventional Lawfare: Operational Law In The War On Terror, L. P. Miller
Political Science Student Scholarship
This thesis examines the legal work required to establish a sufficient lawfare defense by focusing on the Department of Defense Judge Advocate Generals’ Corps (JAG Corps). The work will describe the JAG Corps as a well-trenched bureaucracy with a moral mission to uphold the military’s honor through laws, and how this was interpreted by the Bush and Obama administrations.
Consequences Of Information Asymmetry On Corporate Risk Management, Howard J. Merrill Iii
Consequences Of Information Asymmetry On Corporate Risk Management, Howard J. Merrill Iii
Applied Economics Theses
This paper will demonstrate the impact information asymmetry has on risk management. There is a noticeable impact within the context of consumer credit risk. If a firm is able to recognize this, they can make improved credit decisions that will reduce the consequences. The theoretical impact will be presented while depicting areas of risk management that are susceptible to information asymmetry. We find a direct impact on the development of scoring models, credit policies, and origination volume. These results hold for banks with portfolios consisting of consumer credit products and small business loans. Once known, banks can better tailor their …
The Impact Of Money Supply And Electronic Money: Empirical Evidence From Central Bank In China, Rui Qin
The Impact Of Money Supply And Electronic Money: Empirical Evidence From Central Bank In China, Rui Qin
Applied Economics Theses
The purpose of this paper is to study the electronic money's influence on the money supply as well as the power of the central bank. We show in an illustrative theoretical model that electronic money will impact on money supply, especially affect M0 and M1. Using data of central bank in China during 1990 to 2010 and applying ordinary least squares (OLS) regression models, we find robust evidence that electronic money has a negative impact on M0, but a positive impact on M1. In addition, the central bank's abilities to control money supply can be affected by the wide application …
Stock Market Wealth Impact On Consumption Expenditure, Ramberto Jr. Sosa Cueto
Stock Market Wealth Impact On Consumption Expenditure, Ramberto Jr. Sosa Cueto
Applied Economics Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to explain the role of the stock market in determining aggregate consumer behavior. Theoretically, the life-cycle hypothesis is the main link between consumption and wealth. Additionally, a household’s corporate equities holdings form part of that wealth (a small proportion). However, stock market fluctuations account for a significant part of the variation in household wealth, because of the stock prices’ volatility.
In regression models, the estimated relationship between consumption and wealth is commonly positive and statistically significant. The empirical evidence in this paper suggests that the relationship between consumption and wealth is positive and statistically …
Behavioral Economics And The Effects Of Psychology On The Stock Market, Justin L. Nagy
Behavioral Economics And The Effects Of Psychology On The Stock Market, Justin L. Nagy
Applied Economics Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to study the contributions behavioral economics and finance have had on the understanding on how the stock market works. The idea that psychology plays a role in influencing the stock market can be dated back to Adam Smith who wrote about individual’s behavior in his work Theory of Moral Sentiments. It wasn’t until the latter half of the 20th century that behavioral economics became accepted as a counter to Eugene Fama’s widely accepted theory of Efficient Market Hypothesis. This paper will analyze the development of behavioral economics, review the main contributors to the field …
Experiences Of Soviet Women Combatants During World War Ii, Michelle De Jesus Reyes
Experiences Of Soviet Women Combatants During World War Ii, Michelle De Jesus Reyes
History Theses
World War II was arguably the most heroic event in the history of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), so much that it was known as the “Great Patriotic War.” Tens of millions of Russians were killed during the large scale conflict against their “fascist foes.” Still, the large population of the USSR were moved to action primarily by mass propaganda distributed by the Communist Party leaders. Women played a large role during the war, not just in the factories on the home front or as partisans, but as combat nurses and snipers as well. Since the losses …
“We Were Not Prepared To Tell People Yet”: Confidentiality Breaches And Boundary Turbulence On Facebook, Jocelyn M. Degroot, Tennley A. Vik
“We Were Not Prepared To Tell People Yet”: Confidentiality Breaches And Boundary Turbulence On Facebook, Jocelyn M. Degroot, Tennley A. Vik
SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
Communication Privacy Management theory provides a framework for investigating confidentiality breaches that occur on Facebook. Open-ended online questionnaires served as mechanism for collecting data about privacy violations and the resulting boundary turbulence. Privacy violations validated three a priori categories (Petronio & Reierson, 2009) of confidentiality breaches (privacy ownership violations, discrepancy breaches of privacy, and pre-emptive privacy control). Findings indicated that the lack of established explicit privacy rules led to privacy violations and boundary turbulence. Results also provided insight regarding motivations of privacy violations, reactions to privacy violations, and the role of privacy rules in the violation.

Humor In Medicine: A Literature Review Of Humor’S Potential Therapeutic Value In Health Care, Weston Michael Grant
Humor In Medicine: A Literature Review Of Humor’S Potential Therapeutic Value In Health Care, Weston Michael Grant
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Using humor and laughter within the health care field has the potential to be relevant to patients during treatment, to the patient-caregiver relationship, to the subjective well-being of health care providers, and to the environments’ (e.g., work settings) impact on group relationships (e.g., colleagues). A review of the literature examines how the psychological and physiological effects of laughter and humor within the human body impact health and well-being, how humor and laughter improve the patient-practitioner relationship, and if humor and laughter can potentially impact physician burnout. Several possible implications for these findings are discussed, such as professional medical comedians, improvements …
Genes, Education, And Labor Market Outcomes: Evidence From The Health And Retirement Study, Nicholas W. Papageorge, Kevin Thom
Genes, Education, And Labor Market Outcomes: Evidence From The Health And Retirement Study, Nicholas W. Papageorge, Kevin Thom
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
Recent advances have led to the discovery of specific genetic variants that predict educational attainment. We study how these variants, summarized as a genetic score variable, are associated with human capital accumulation and labor market outcomes in the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). We demonstrate that the same genetic score that predicts education is also associated with higher wages, but only among individuals with a college education. Moreover, the genetic gradient in wages has grown in more recent birth cohorts, consistent with interactions between technological change and labor market ability. We also show that individuals who grew up in economically …
Beyond Coattails: Explaining John Paul Hammerschmidt's Victory In 1966, Jesse Ray Sims
Beyond Coattails: Explaining John Paul Hammerschmidt's Victory In 1966, Jesse Ray Sims
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the campaign issues, demographic factors, and voting trends that helped Republican John Paul Hammerschmidt defeat incumbent Democratic congressman James W. Trimble in Arkansas’s third congressional district in 1966. Much of the historiography addressing this election largely neglects the historic significance of Hammerschmidt’s successful campaign and the factors contributing to his victory. Instead, historians primarily write about the election of Republican Winthrop Rockefeller to the governor’s office that year.
This thesis pieces together several theories on how Hammerschmidt defeated Trimble, including the effect of Winthrop Rockefeller’s coattails, the demographic changes taking place in the Ozarks beginning in the …
Climbar - An Arkansas Rock Climbing Documentary, Daniel Alan Henkel
Climbar - An Arkansas Rock Climbing Documentary, Daniel Alan Henkel
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this thesis project, ‘ClimbAR’ - a rock climbing documentary - is to tell the story of a fringe sport/outdoor activity in the state of Arkansas. The history of the sport has been passed down primarily by word of mouth and contained within a small, tight knit group of Arkansas rock climbers since its humble beginnings in the 1980s. Though many of the original climbers in the state have since moved on, a new generation of adventurers have taken the reins. This film focuses on the newest generation of Arkansas rock climbers.
Like many climbers in the state, …
Does A Better Running Back Mean More Rushing? Game Theory And The Nfl, Eric Lofquist
Does A Better Running Back Mean More Rushing? Game Theory And The Nfl, Eric Lofquist
Honors Scholar Theses
In this paper I attempt to answer the question of whether or not teams in the National Football League (NFL) rush less with a better running back. This seems counterintuitive, but game theory supposes that this is true. Defenses facing a better running back will generally expect the offense to rush more and therefore defend the run more often. The offense, foreseeing the defense’s actions, will choose to pass more to counteract the run defense. This is the basis of the difference between the strategic effect and the direct effect in mixed strategies. The direct effect is when a player …
Public Ritual Sacrifice As A Controlling Mechanism For The Aztec, Madeline Nicholson
Public Ritual Sacrifice As A Controlling Mechanism For The Aztec, Madeline Nicholson
Honors Scholar Theses
For decades, archaeologists have researched the fascinating finds of Aztec sacrifice. Evidence of their sacrifices are seen on temple walls, stone carvings, bones, and in Spanish chronicler drawings. Although public ritual sacrifice was practiced before the Aztecs, with evidence from the Olmec civilization (1200-1300 BCE) and Maya (200-900 BCE), Aztec sacrifices are among the most extensively documented. How does such a practice survive in different civilizations through different rulers? This thesis will analyze the phases of Aztec public ritual sacrifice (specifically the location, length, and number of sacrifices) and the close relationship to their origin myths, or founding stories. It …

“The Golden Rule”: A Portable Escape Room Designed To Promote Empathy And Playfulness In Challenging Social Contexts, Isabella Gomati
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
The development of a Portable Escape Room (PER) board game aims to promote empathy as one of the key skills that, for a society in constant change, is necessary to face and solve complex social challenges. The development of a PER is a way of addressing the need for both innovative and accessible tools that can be used in different sectors of the economy. The PER not only encourages creative collaboration, but it also introduces the possibility of playfulness as a bridge for learning and problem-solving in a variety of scenarios. The product itself encompasses an excellent example of a …

Odd Symptom Network During Preschool, Tess E. Smith, Christine A. Lee, Michelle M. Martel, Marni E. Axelrad
Psychology Faculty Publications
Several different conceptualizations of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) symptoms have been proposed, including one undivided set of symptoms (DSM-IV-TR; APA 2000); two domains of symptoms subdivided into affective and behavioral; and three domains of symptoms subdivided as angry/irritable, argumentative/defiant, and spiteful. The current study utilizes a novel approach to examining the division of ODD symptoms through use of network analysis. Participants were 109 preschoolers (64 male) between the ages of three and six (M = 4.34 years, SD = 1.08) and their parents and teachers/caregivers, who provided ratings of ODD symptoms. Results are consistent with one-, two-, and three- …

The Relationship Between Self-Perceived Gender Typicality, Self-Esteem And Psychological Distress In College Students, Godswill O. Chuku
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The role of gender identity in the gender differences observed in psychological distress has been established in research with researchers acknowledging the importance of a multidimensional conceptualization of gender identity. Gender typicality is one aspect of gender identity that has been identified to be related to psychosocial adjustment such as self-esteem in adolescents. Self-perceived gender typicality describes how typical people feel they are in relation to their own gender group. By asking college students to fill out an online survey on gender typicality, self-esteem and psychological distress, the present study explored the relationship between self-perceived gender typicality and psychological distress …
Bank Specific Determinants Of Profitability In Turkish Banks, Ahmet Karakuza
Bank Specific Determinants Of Profitability In Turkish Banks, Ahmet Karakuza
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
This paper examines the profitability of Turkish commercial banks during the period 2005 – 2014. We use bank – specific determinants to predict the following years’ profitability measured by return on assets (ROA). Among the performance measures, the amount of net interest income as a proportion of total operating income is positive related to profitability. It remains important for banks to loan money out at a rate higher than their cost of capital. Non-interest income as a proportion of total assets is strongly positively related to profitability. Consumer loans as a proportion of total loans is negatively related to profitability. …
An Evolutionary Based Examination Of Sexting Behavior Among College Students, Scott Ploharz
An Evolutionary Based Examination Of Sexting Behavior Among College Students, Scott Ploharz
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Previous research has viewed the sending and receiving of sexually natured text and picture messages as risky and dangerous behavior. It is through this lens that previous research has examined the reason individuals choose to engage in sexting, and the possible effects of the behavior. The current study is the first to examine the possible adaptive reasons that individuals may choose to engage in sexting. A total of 218 participants from Fort Hays State University completed measures of their sexting behaviors, attitudes towards sexual activity, and risk tolerance. It was hypothesized that an individual participants’ endorsement of a sex consistent …
The Moderating Effects Of Stress On The Relationship Between Self-Control, And Desire For Control, On Impulsive Purchasing, Katelynn Reed
The Moderating Effects Of Stress On The Relationship Between Self-Control, And Desire For Control, On Impulsive Purchasing, Katelynn Reed
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The current study examined the effect of self-control and desire for control on impulsive purchasing with stress as a moderator. Self-control has been found to be lower in individuals who engage in impulsive purchasing (Baumeister, 2002b), whereas little to no research on the effect of desire for control on impulsive purchasing has been completed. Stress has been found to relate with self-control and desire for control (Galla & Wood 2015; Leotti, Iyengar, & Ochsner, 2003). This study hopes to fill the research gap by exploring if stress moderates self-control and desire for control’s effect on impulsive purchasing. Participants were recruited …

Climate Change And Conflict: The Relationship Between Government Response To Climate Change And Civil Unrest In The Middle East And North Africa, Lydia Grossman
Climate Change And Conflict: The Relationship Between Government Response To Climate Change And Civil Unrest In The Middle East And North Africa, Lydia Grossman
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
In the past few decades, the Middle East and North Africa has experienced two seemingly disparate phenomena: the effects of anthropogenic climate change and a high degree of civil unrest. Though on the surface these two phenomena may seem completely separate, there is evidence that government response to climate change affects the level of civil unrest among populations in this region. This paper hypothesizes that there is a relationship between these two phenomena. The hypothesis is tested using the case studies of Syria, Jordan, Tunisia, and Sudan in a controlled comparison. This paper finds that effective government response to climate …
The Lose-Lose Situation : Identity Prioritization And Gendered Communication In Co-Recreational Intramural Basketball., Megan Robinson
The Lose-Lose Situation : Identity Prioritization And Gendered Communication In Co-Recreational Intramural Basketball., Megan Robinson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Co-recreational sports deserve to be studied due to their relationship between the environment, identity prioritization, and gendered communication for individuals. In spite of the environment’s importance in collegiate student development, few have asked the questions of: how do co-recreational intramural basketball players manage their multiple identities and statuses when playing with or against members of the same or opposite sex; and how do players of both sexes use gendered communication strategies to negotiate predominantly masculine leisure environments, like intramural basketball leagues? Using in-depth interviews from co-recreational intramural basketball players at the University of Louisville triangulated with observations of co-recreational intramural …

This dissertation is an examination of the influence of sport participation on binge drinking among African-American youth. The dissertation is divided into five chapters, covering introduction, literature review, methodology, results, and conclusion. Chapter one describes the problem of binge drinking among African-American youth, focusing on the many deleterious consequences and rates of use. It also examines the problem theoretically through the criminological theories of social bond theory and social learning theory to argue for an understanding of binge drinking by African-American youth. Chapter two examines similar work by previous authors and further details our theoretical premises and their relation to …
Stigma Of Mental Illness And Multicultural Counseling Self-Efficacy : Investigating The Implications Of The Multicultural Training Environment, Mental Health Literacy, And Empathy., Sarah E. Tucker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research has shown that the stigma of mental illness is a pervasive social issue, in the United States and globally (Arboleda-Florez, 2008), one that has been considered by the surgeon general to be one of the single greatest barriers to addressing mental health care in the United States (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1999). Furthermore, research has indicated that mental health care providers hold stigmatizing views toward people with mental illnesses at rates equal to or higher than the general public (Nordt, Rössler, & Lauber, 2006). This experience of being stigmatized because of a mental illness diagnosis by …
