Is Everything All Right At Night? Measuring User Response To Overnight Library Services, Jennifer Nutefall, Tina Chrzastowski

Staff publications, research, and presentations

A multiple-methods study was conducted in FY15 at Santa Clara University Library to assess 24/5 hours, focusing specifically on impact and value. The purpose was to assess not only the overnight use of the library, but the perceptions of late-night users on the value of 24-hour library accessibility. This three-component study included a survey (conducted over three quarters in FY15, with 616 respondents), hourly patron headcounts, and more detailed headcounts by hour of day and user activity. A fourth component is also now underway (results available by conference time); hourly patron counts are currently being conducted that focus on user …

"...And A Box": Working With Unstructured Comment Data, Megan E. Smith, Topher Lawton

Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations

Old Dominion University Libraries recently conducted the LibQUAL+ survey, and received over 300 comments from respondents. This comment data presented a challenge for the volunteer group of librarians and staff tasked with designing, administering, and analyzing the survey. However, the richness and value that qualitative data adds to quantitative measures cannot be overlooked. Furthermore, qualitative data needs to be treated with the same rigor as quantitative data. So, how did we take seemingly disparate comments and use them to add depth and meaning to quantitative data? This poster depicts how the ODU Libraries answered that question. It highlights the methods …

Exploring The Community Impact Of Service-Learning Project Teams, Brent J. Goertzen Ph.D., Justin Greenleaf Ph.D., Danielle Dougherty

Leadership Faculty Publications

The purpose of this project was to study community partners' perceptions of the impact of service-learning projects, by studying the ways in which “service-learning project teams” (SLPT) impacted the communities and organizations where they worked. Researchers purposefully selected 16 community partners (CP) who had direct experience working with and supervising service-learning project teams to take part in semi-structured interviews regarding their experiences. Analysis of the transcribed interviews resulted in 15 themes that were divided into two categories. These findings are intended to be a starting point for further research regarding the community impact of service-learning.

Utilizing Film To Teach Leadership: An Analysis Of Miracle, Rocky Iv, And Lincoln, Alyssa C. Hilby, Carrie A. Stephens, Christopher T. Stripling

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Presenting verbal and visual material can be an effective teaching tool for learners who are being introduced to new leadership material. Film was selected as the multimedia outlet to engage an individual’s critical thinking skills while demonstrating different leadership components. This study analyzed three films with the intent of assisting a leadership educator in the process of teaching (a) leading teams, (b) leading change, and (c) transformational leadership. It was concluded that Miracle (O’Connor & Ciardi, 2004) was ideal for teaching about leading teams because it exposed the nuances of team dynamics. Additionally, Rocky IV (Stallone, 1985) was ideal for …

Going Beyond Dda’S “They Clicked It → We Bought It → Done” Assessing Ebook Use Pre- And Post-Purchase, Nicole Branch, Tina Chrzastowski, Jessica Harris Oct 2016

Going Beyond Dda’S “They Clicked It → We Bought It → Done” Assessing Ebook Use Pre- And Post-Purchase, Nicole Branch, Tina Chrzastowski, Jessica Harris

Staff publications, research, and presentations

Ebook DDA (demand-driven acquisitions) programs have become common in academic libraries of all sizes. To establish a DDA program, a library creates potential subject collections by establishing profiles and downloading e-records that match them into their online catalog; when books are “used” (in an amazingly wide array of options), the library buys the book, often after a certain threshold is met. This is a fairly seamless process that users are often unaware is happening. DDA assessment by libraries, however, is often limited to the obvious demarcation between those ebooks that are purchased (after meeting library thresholds), and those that remain …

Evaluation Champions: What They Do, Why They Do It, And Why It Matters To Organizations, Benjamin Silliman, Pennie Crinion, Thomas Archibald Oct 2016

Evaluation Champions: What They Do, Why They Do It, And Why It Matters To Organizations, Benjamin Silliman, Pennie Crinion, Thomas Archibald

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Evaluation champions are individuals who serve as catalysts for building evaluation capacity within an organization. They advocate for the importance of program evaluation, model good evaluation behaviors, and mentor their peers in program evaluation skills and competencies. Interviews with 40 peer-nominated champions in four purposively-sampled Extension organizations identified the roles, contexts, and motivations of staff who act as evaluation champions. Findings underline the importance—and the limits—of mentors and project teams in building evaluation capacity in complex organizations. Implications for practice, research, and policy are discussed.

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Identifying what Extension professionals believe are the critical elements of a communication strategy that is most likely to encourage agricultural producers to participate in discussions of climate variability and climate change is pivotal to providing timely solutions to issues facing farmers. The current study involved interviews with 50 Extension professionals from four southeastern states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina) who were engaged in ongoing work related to climate and agriculture. Respondents were asked to assess how best to engage farmers in conversations related to climate variability and climate change. Qualitative analysis showed that Extension professionals recommended avoiding content related …

Evaluation Champions: What They Need And Where They Fit In Organizational Learning, Benjamin Silliman, Pennie Crinion, Thomas Archibald Oct 2016

Evaluation Champions: What They Need And Where They Fit In Organizational Learning, Benjamin Silliman, Pennie Crinion, Thomas Archibald

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Evaluation champions in four state Extension systems described needs for training and support and perspectives on building evaluation capacity in their organization as part of a larger interview study exploring their roles, growth, and motivations. These 40 evaluation leaders identified needs for basic and advanced evaluation skills training, technical assistance, and practical learning via mentoring and project teams. Recommendations for organizational change in evaluation capacity included “top-down” investments in communication, training, and practical support, as well as increased “bottom-up” efforts by champions like themselves to advocate, model best practice, and contribute to training and mentoring peers. Implications for professional development …

Surviving The Recession: Implications For Practitioners To Better Support Pre-Retiree Housing Counseling Clientele, Erica Tobe, Barbra D. Ames, Marsha Carolan, Esther Onaga

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

The Great Recession resulted in significant job loss, producing a decrease in income for many families. Others struggled with unaffordable loans and underwater home mortgages. As a result of the multiple challenges after the recession, housing instability was prevalent. To offer support, local agencies provided education and assistance. Existing research provides an understanding of the economic influence of foreclosure and counseling services on communities, yet little is known about the experience of families during and after crisis. Using Seidman’s (2012) three-stage interview process, a series of phenomenological, semistructured qualitative interviews were completed to give voice to a sample of participants, …

Sleep As An Evolved Behavior: Ecological Opportunity Costs And Sleep Optimization, Gandhi Yetish Oct 2016

Sleep As An Evolved Behavior: Ecological Opportunity Costs And Sleep Optimization, Gandhi Yetish

Anthropology ETDs

Sleep problems afflict millions world-over. Treating this has been difficult because there is no consensus definition for “normal” sleep. People can vary in their personal sleep need, but the determinants of variation in sleep duration are largely unknown, as is the criteria to determine how much variation is normal. Given that most diurnal mammals (including primates) appear to sleep from sunset to sunrise, the leading explanation for sleep pathology in the post-industrial world has been that electronics, especially light illuminating devices, substantially reduce sleep duration. This assertion has heretofore only been tested experimentally. This research aims to resolve this issue …

Public Opinions Of Farmer-Oriented Environmentally Friendly Extension Programs: A Case Of Best Management Practices, Pei-Wen Huang, Alexa J. Lamm, Joy N. Rumble

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Public concern about environmental protection has been developing for decades. However, a knowledge gap exists between farmers and consumers regarding the implementation of environmental protection practices through the use of Best Management Practices (BMPs). Extension can bridge this knowledge gap by developing effective educational programs about BMP use. This study sought to identify consumers’ perceptions of BMPs and preferred communication channels to facilitate the development of farmer-oriented Extension programs which assist with direct communication between farmers and consumers. Residents in seven Florida counties (N = 700) were surveyed for this descriptive study. Respondents were asked about their perceptions, beliefs, trust, …

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Youth-adult relationships exist on a continuum from adult-led to youth-led collaborations. However, research suggests that quality youth-adult partnerships, which fall in the middle of this continuum, directly contribute to positive youth development. Given this, the current study evaluated the impact of a 4-H Youth Development program, using youth-adult partnerships and a teens as teachers program model, on positive youth development outcomes of participating youth. Qualitative data were collected from 29 youth to evaluate the 4-H Food Smart Families program presented by Washington State University Youth Advocates for Health (YA4-H!). Data analysis identified themes related to the benefits and challenges of …

Volunteer Delivery Of A Community-Based Strength Training Program: Comparison Of Adopting And Nonadopting Extension Educator Perspectives, Lisa T. Washburn, Carol E. Cornell, Lavona Traywick, Holly C. Felix, Martha Phillips

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Volunteer leaders are increasingly being utilized to deliver community strength training classes, but the factors affecting adoption of volunteer delivery approaches by educators or program managers have not been well explored. This study sought to identify these factors by comparing perspectives of adopting and nonadopting county Extension educators for a group strength training program delivered through county Cooperative Extension offices. Semistructured interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of adopting (n=6) and nonadopting (n=13) educators. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and coded using thematic content analysis. Review of codes related to adoption or nonadoption of volunteer delivery approaches produced common …

Portrait Of A Collector: Reflections On An Influential Bibliophile, Meg Miner

Scholarly Publications

The purpose of this essay is to bring together disparate information on Myers’ book collecting habits. President Myers used both the objects of his collecting and the intellectual ideas they represent in the course of his presidential responsibilities. This work offers an overview solely of this aspect of Myers’ activities, in both written records and oral histories, and is not an attempt to analyze the entire arc of Myers’ tenure.  The following contains an overview of this project, a summary of collectors’ characteristics, generally, and an exploration of the specific type of collector Myers was based both on documentary evidence …

Repairing The Broken Mirror: Understanding Men's Muscularity-Focused Body Image Concerns Through The Lens Of Gender Role Conflict And Self-Compassion., Michael S. Butchko

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Psychological research pertaining to the study of men and masculinity has discerned that men are increasingly becoming dissatisfied with their bodies. However, men’s body image research has been neglected as researchers originally concluded that only women were impacted. However, the last 20 years has begun to elucidate factors and consequences of muscularity-focused body image dissatisfaction among men. Particularly, some men engage in dangerous behaviors (e.g., excessive exercise, dieting, steroid use) in order to obtain a body with large biceps, chiseled chest, and defined abdominal muscles. Also, more men are experiencing characteristics of muscle dysmorphia (MD), a subtype of body dysmorphic …

A Visualization Model Used For Determining The Effectiveness Of Information Retrieval In A Scientific Database, Nestor L. Osorio, Samantha Johnson

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

In this study, we demonstrate that a visualization model can determine the effectiveness of searching a bibliographic database, when three descriptive metadata fields are compared. The Inspec database was searched to create a bibliography of articles about a broad scientific topic, interplanetary travel. We collected metadata from 823 Inspec articles and used the Sci2 Tool to create co-occurrence networks based on subject terms, title keywords, and classification codes from each of the articles. The Watts-Strogatz clustering coefficient model was used to create molecular organization of the networks. This method identified subject domain clusters for each of the three selected metadata …

Ownership Structure Impact On Exchange Rate Exposure Under The Rmb Regime Reform, Luning Jia Oct 2016

Ownership Structure Impact On Exchange Rate Exposure Under The Rmb Regime Reform, Luning Jia

Lingnan Theses

This thesis investigates effects of exchange rate exposure upon stock returns of a large sample of Chinese firms when they are divided into SOEs and non-SOEs. I obtain the exposure estimates first and examine their determinants. By extending the current literature, I introduce the ownership structure into the framework and I compare different ownership impacts on the exposure before and after the Reform. My study shows that a SOE or non-SOE firm makes no difference in facing the exchange rate exposure before the Reform. If a firm is a SOE, the firm faces smaller exposure after the Reform. I further …
