Keeping Quiet: Investigating The Maintenance And Policing Of Male-Dominated Gaming Space, Christopher Charles Jan 2016

Keeping Quiet: Investigating The Maintenance And Policing Of Male-Dominated Gaming Space, Christopher Charles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the near parity between the number of female and male gamers (Entertainment Software Association, 2014), studies on gender in videogames illustrate a culture that typically reflects hegemonic masculinity and excludes women on a multitude of levels. Because these interactions occur within real and virtual space (both online and within games), a holistic approach is warranted to analyze these mechanisms of oppression. This paper seeks to uncover the ways by which gaming culture is maintained and policed as a male-dominated space, through qualitative data collection. By using ethnographic, participant observation at a large, multi-genre convention the experiences of both male …

Making The Invisible Visible: Exploring The Experiences Of Black Male Professionals In Postsecondary Education, Claudine Mclaren Turner Jan 2016

Making The Invisible Visible: Exploring The Experiences Of Black Male Professionals In Postsecondary Education, Claudine Mclaren Turner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

College student development literature discusses the challenges faced by historically under-represented groups in college and the role that university personnel play in retaining students from these groups (Brown 2009; Hairston 2013; Kuh et al 2005). Research reveals that Black male students are retained in greater numbers when connected with Black male professionals who: 1) hold them accountable for their choices; and 2) discuss and demonstrate effective coping techniques to deal with race-based challenges that seem to convey colleges and universities are not the appropriate space for young Black men (Bonner and Bailey 2006; Harper 2012; Wynn 2007; Cuyjet 2006). Research …

"Sealing The Bond": A Qualitative Study Of African American Funeral Rituals, Danielle (Grant) Graham Jan 2016

"Sealing The Bond": A Qualitative Study Of African American Funeral Rituals, Danielle (Grant) Graham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Death is a universal phenomenon; yet, reactions to death are uniquely diverse. Handling the loss of a loved one has the potential to completely change how an individual sees their world, and their response to death can vary by race, religion, gender, and culture. The bereavement process in many ways is culturally guided, and understanding how culture guides the bereavement process through rituals is imperative. Despite cultural difference, responses to death within the academic community are only representative of one group of people. This study looks at funeral rituals seen within the African American community, and addresses possible meanings behind …

Examining Presence And Influence Of Linguistic Characteristics In The Twitter Discourse Surrounding The Women's Right To Drive Movement In Saudi Arabia, Abdulsamad Sahly Jan 2016

Examining Presence And Influence Of Linguistic Characteristics In The Twitter Discourse Surrounding The Women's Right To Drive Movement In Saudi Arabia, Abdulsamad Sahly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter have been popular tools for social and political movements in non-democratic societies in which traditional media outlets are under government control. Activists in Saudi Arabia, particularly women, have launched several campaigns through social media to demand the right to drive for women. This study used framing theory as the foundation for looking at the degree to which cognitive, emotion, and religious or moral language has been used to frame discussion of this issue on Twitter. Additionally, this study observed the relationship between these linguistic attributes in Twitter and retweeting behavior to understand the …

Mathematical Modeling Of Infectious Diseases With Latency: Homogeneous Mixing And Contact Network, Keith Carlson Jan 2016

Mathematical Modeling Of Infectious Diseases With Latency: Homogeneous Mixing And Contact Network, Keith Carlson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In mathematical epidemiology, the standard compartmental models assume homogeneous mixing in the host population, in contrast to the disease spread process over a real host contact network. One approach to incorporating heterogeneous mixing is to consider the population to be a network of individuals whose contacts follow a given probability distribution. In this thesis we investigate in analogy both homogeneous mixing and contact network models for infectious diseases that admit latency periods, such as dengue fever, Ebola, and HIV. We consider the mathematics of the compartmental model as well as the network model, including the dynamics of their equations from …

Looking Backwards At Old Cases: When Science Moves Forward, Jules Epstein Jan 2016

Looking Backwards At Old Cases: When Science Moves Forward, Jules Epstein

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

Forensic evidence—be it in the form of science-derived analyses such as DNA profiling or drug identification, or in more subjective analyses such as pattern or impression [latent print, handwriting, firearms] examinations—is prevalent and often critical in criminal prosecutions. Yet, while the criminal court processes prize finality of verdicts, science evolves and often proves that earlier analyses were inadequate or plainly wrong. This article examines the tension between those two concerns by focusing on the 2015 decision of the United States Supreme Court in Maryland v. Kulbicki, addresses the inadequacies of the Court’s analysis, and suggests some factors for judges confronted …

Rapid Evidence Maps As Decision Tools For Evidence-Based Policy, Mark Engelbert Jan 2016

Rapid Evidence Maps As Decision Tools For Evidence-Based Policy, Mark Engelbert

Capstone Collection

The movement to make policy more evidence-based is gaining increasing influence in the field of international development. I argue that, properly understood and executed, evidence-based policy has the promise to make development efforts more effective. However, if policy decisions are to be evidence-based, there must be tools available to policymakers that provide evidence in usable formats. The research community has developed a variety of such tools, but there are some decision-making contexts for which none of the currently-available tools are ideally suited. This paper describes a new type of evidence tool, the rapid evidence map (REM), that provides users with …

Construction And Assembly Of A Hyperdrive Recording Implant, Andrew A. Ortiz, Ryan A. Wirt, James M. Hyman Jan 2016

Construction And Assembly Of A Hyperdrive Recording Implant, Andrew A. Ortiz, Ryan A. Wirt, James M. Hyman

AANAPISI Poster Presentations

The ability to record neural activity from multiple brain areas is crucial for the understanding of how different areas of the brain function or interact. This poster will cover instructions on how to construct and assemble a hyperdrive recording implant that bilaterally targets the ACC and the hippocampus. Intriguingly, the design of the hyperdrive recording implant is flexible and can be constructed to target other brain areas. The implant consists of 32 twisted bundles of tetrodes with a total of 128 individual recording wires which are controlled by movable ‘drivers’ (Gray et al., 1995; McNaughton et al., 1983). All 128 …

Performance Of American And Russian Joint Stock Companies On Financial Market. A Microstructure Perspective, Magdalena Osińska, Andrzej Dobrzyński, Yochanan Shachmurove Jan 2016

Performance Of American And Russian Joint Stock Companies On Financial Market. A Microstructure Perspective, Magdalena Osińska, Andrzej Dobrzyński, Yochanan Shachmurove

Publications and Research

This paper compares the periods before and after the Ukrainian crisis of 2014 from the perspective of market microstructure. The hypothesis is that the crisis influenced the fragile Russian financial market equilibrium. As financial markets adapt to the new equilibrium, the paper studies the effects of the crisis and the imposition of economic sanctions on Russia in terms of volatility, duration, prices and volume for selected joint stock companies listed on the U.S. and the Russian stock markets. Results reveal that the Moscow Stock exchange lacks an appropriate transmission mechanism from informed investors to the rest of the market.

Viability Of Using Twitter To Support Peer Instruction In Teacher Education, Tian Luo, Danielle E. Dani, Li Cheng Jan 2016

Viability Of Using Twitter To Support Peer Instruction In Teacher Education, Tian Luo, Danielle E. Dani, Li Cheng

STEMPS Faculty Publications

This paper reports on a case study in which Twitter served as a backchannel to mediate and support the peer-teaching activity in a face-to-face teacher education course. Surveys and interviews were utilised to understand the effectiveness of the Twitter integration and students' perceived learning in a Twitter-supported peer teaching environment. Tweets were used to determine how preservice teachers used Twitter to support peer instruction. Most students were able to use the Twitter platform to produce and retrieve peer feedback, while some encountered technical difficulties. Our current analysis suggests the Twitter-based peer feedback was moderately successful in this peer teaching activity. …

Impacts Of Music On Sectional View Drawing Ability For Engineering Technology Students As Measured Through Technical Drawings, Petros J. Katsioloudis, Mildred Jones, Vukica Jovanovic

STEMPS Faculty Publications

Results from a number of studies indicate that the use of different types of music can influence cognition and behavior; however, research provides inconsistent results. Considering this, a quasi-experimental study was conducted to identify the existence of statistically significant effects on sectional view drawing ability due to the impacts of music. In particular, the study compared the use of three different types of music; classical, rock, heavy metal and whether a significant difference exists towards sectional view drawing ability, among engineering technology students. According to the results of this study it is suggested that the impact of music provides no …

School Library Advocacy Success- Perceptions In Context, Elizabeth Burns Jan 2016

School Library Advocacy Success- Perceptions In Context, Elizabeth Burns

STEMPS Faculty Publications

School librarians must be able to articulate the value of the educational impact they have on students and do so in a manner that is meaningful to their stakeholders (Kirkland, 2012). Little research (Ewbank, 2011; Haycock, 2003; Oberg, 2006) exists examining effective advocacy practices or the perceptions of school library programs by stakeholders when school librarians are strong advocates for their programs. This study addresses this gap and explores perceived advocacy success by school librarians, as well as their stakeholders, and the strategies implemented to gain support for the school library program. This study employed a mixed method explanatory research …

The Teshik-Tash Child: Evolutionary Montage During The Middle Paleolithic, Nirosh Moodley, Alesha Pettit Jan 2016

The Teshik-Tash Child: Evolutionary Montage During The Middle Paleolithic, Nirosh Moodley, Alesha Pettit

AANAPISI Poster Presentations

Discovered in 1938 in the Bajsun district of southern Uzbekistan, Teshik-Tash 1 represents a juvenile male hominin, aged between nine and eleven years old. He was classified as Homo neanderthalensis. Two pertinent characteristics of the find’s in situ context provided the backdrop for this classification. Firstly, the Teshik-Tash child was buried with associated grave goods surrounded by a Middle Paleolithic assemblage which has been described as “Mousterian-like” (Glantz et al, 2009: 45). Secondly, the very location of this find was the furthest eastern extent of hominin discoveries outside of the Levant. Recent research, however, challenges this boundary by questioning …

Homelessness In The Valley, Termaine Turner Ii, Christopher Wakefield Jan 2016

Homelessness In The Valley, Termaine Turner Ii, Christopher Wakefield

AANAPISI Poster Presentations

  • In today’s society, there is a common belief that homeless people are the problem and that they have services at their disposal to end their homelessness. Yet, there is little consideration given to how society has influenced this population.
  • Homelessness is a serious problem nationwide and is also a challenge to resolve once you have found yourself within the homeless community. It is important not to judge each homeless individual’s situation the same.
  • The demographics of the homeless population is just as diverse as the factors that led to their homelessness.
  • This paper examined the available literature on the contributing …

Feminism In Revolution: Women Of The 19th Century Anti-Tsarist Movements, Kayley Delong Jan 2016

Feminism In Revolution: Women Of The 19th Century Anti-Tsarist Movements, Kayley Delong

Undergraduate Research Awards

The climate of political upheaval in Russia over the course of the 19th century reached a violent climax in the assassination of Tsar Alexander II in March of 1881. His death was the result of decades of civil unrest amongst Russian citizens who had taken hold of enlightenment ideas and sought justice for economic and social inequality. In a complex equation of issues and policies, the ways in which the women question combined with the surge of new ideas produced a unique and perfect storm. Russia was the epicenter of a collision between an underdeveloped infrastructure and changing philosophies about …

Nasser Of Egypt And The Egypt Of Nasser, Pria G. Jackson Jan 2016

Nasser Of Egypt And The Egypt Of Nasser, Pria G. Jackson

Undergraduate Research Awards

In the Egyptian consciousness, there is a date that resonates in the nation’s memory as the official catalyst that led to the rise of modern Egypt: July 23, 1952. On this day, a military group called the Free Officers rose up and seized control of Egypt from the monarchs and British colonizers in a near bloodless coup d’état. The face of the Free Officers at the time of the coup was General Muhammad Naguib (1901 – 1984), but the brain and heart of the movement was the then colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser (1918 – 1970). During the first three years …
