The Grammar Of Politicization And Depoliticization : Arendt's Republicanism And The Translation Of Revolutionary Politics And Judgment Into Political Institutions, Daniel Kuchler
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
For Arendt, political freedom is both a spontaneous rejection of rule and the foundation of institutions. In my dissertation, I argue that both aspects are linked together by her concept of political judgment. This reading of Arendt contrasts with a strand of political theory that seems to argue that public-participatory politics, as found in revolutions, cannot be translated into lasting institutions: Wolin and Rancière argue that any attempt at establishing institutions undermines the participatory character of politics. Habermas and Pettit on the other hand argue for establishing lasting institutions, but they do so at the expense of a rich concept …
The Teachability Of Situation-Bound Utterances In Modern Chinese As A Foreign Language Context, Shu-Han Yeh
The Teachability Of Situation-Bound Utterances In Modern Chinese As A Foreign Language Context, Shu-Han Yeh
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the teachability of Situation-Bound Utterances (SBUs hence) in a Modern Chinese foreign language classroom. Specifically, the basic question to be examined is this: to what extent two instructional paradigms--explicit versus implicit instruction--affect learners’ knowledge and ability to use SBUs. For this study, SBUs were defined by Kecskés (2000) as “highly conventionalized, prefabricated pragmatic units whose occurrences are tied to standardized communicative situations” (p. 606). SBUs consist of strings such as “I’ll see you later,” and “You can say that again,” which are used predictably by native speakers in certain contexts.
Prisons And Power : Carceral Coloniality In Hybrid Post-Neoliberal Venezuela, Cory Fischer-Hoffman
Prisons And Power : Carceral Coloniality In Hybrid Post-Neoliberal Venezuela, Cory Fischer-Hoffman
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation examines contemporary Venezuela’s dual prison system--in which half of the prison population is incarcerated in internally controlled prisons run by armed inmates, and the other half are locked up in the Bolivarian Government’s restricted “New Regime” prisons. The Venezuelan state formation is conceptualized as ‘hybrid post-neoliberal,’ demonstrating how rationalities of a liberal rentier state and neoliberalism, combined with anti-neoliberal logics all act together in competing yet co-existing ways in the post-neoliberal era, which was initiated by the 1999 Bolivarian Revolution. The central question examines the “work” of the prison in the (re)production of power relations and how policies, …
Terrorist Ideology And Behavior : An Examination Of The Behavior Of Known And Unknown Perpetrators, Rose Bellandi
Terrorist Ideology And Behavior : An Examination Of The Behavior Of Known And Unknown Perpetrators, Rose Bellandi
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The terrorist decision-making process is the key component of understanding the types of attacks terrorists execute, and the group’s ideology is the goal-orientation portion of that rational decision-making process. Terrorist group ideology determines a number of aspects of the decision-making process that expand or limit the targets groups will attack and the tactics they will use to achieve their larger ideological goals. These aspects include: a group’s long-term goals, short-term objectives, an attack’s purpose, the audience, the group’s constituency, its enemies, and its message. Terrorism is a tactic of asymmetrical warfare and a unique form of violent crime. Acts of …
Three Essays On The Global Financial Crisis And Fiscal Policy, Kyonghoon Kim
Three Essays On The Global Financial Crisis And Fiscal Policy, Kyonghoon Kim
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In the first chapter, I show that external openness factors and valuation effects are significant to explain the diverse impact of the Global Financial Crisis across countries. Unlike previous crises in the late 20th century, most developing country groups performed better than advanced countries during the GFC. I find that countries with higher trade and financial openness are more seriously damaged from the external shock during the GFC. Moreover, significant differences in the composition of countries’ external portfolio contribute to the variety of the crisis impact. Emerging countries which have short position in equity and long position in bond are …
Organizing For Collective Impact In A Cradle-To-Career Network, Sarah Jane Zuckerman
Organizing For Collective Impact In A Cradle-To-Career Network, Sarah Jane Zuckerman
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This case study provides a thick description and conceptual analysis of the organization of community members for collective impact in a rural cradle-to-career network. This study focused on three intersecting areas: mobilization of network members; the development of shared issue frames, or common understandings of local needs; and the emergent theory of change held by network members.

Criminal Specialization In The Criminal Justice Context, Shi Yan
Criminal Specialization In The Criminal Justice Context, Shi Yan
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The dissertation consists of two studies. Study 1 examines how criminal specialization predicts the sentencing outcomes. Theories of sentencing have pointed out the association between the sentence and the assessment of the defendant’s risk and culpability, and one of the most important indicators of an individual’s risk is his or her criminal records. Most quantitative studies of sentencing today take criminal records into consideration by controlling for the number of prior criminal justice contacts, and overlook the nature of the prior crimes. The concept criminal specialization refers to the tendency for an individual to repeat the same or a set …
Determinants Of Veterans' Help Seeking Intentions : An Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Tania Khan
Determinants Of Veterans' Help Seeking Intentions : An Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Tania Khan
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Military veterans are often placed in mentally and physically challenging situations and may also endure stress when transitioning to civilian life after their military service, which can lead to many veterans experiencing mental health concerns (Bullock, Braud, Andrews, & Phillips, 2009; Cornish, Thys, Vogel, & Wade, 2014; Hoge, Auchterlonie, & Milliken, 2006; Seal, Bertenthal, Miner, Sen, & Marmar, 2007). Despite the increased risk, many veterans choose not to seek out professional mental health services (Kim, Britt, Klocko, Riviere, & Adler, 2010; Sharp et al., 2015).
School Psychologists' Knowledge Of Adolescent Suicide Myths, Jaime Leigh Savoie
School Psychologists' Knowledge Of Adolescent Suicide Myths, Jaime Leigh Savoie
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Suicide is a significant public health problem in the United States and is currently the second leading cause of death among youth ages 10-24. Due to the seriousness and pervasiveness of the problem of youth suicide, schools are being asked to take a prominent role in its prevention. School psychologists are one of the mental health professionals within schools that have an important role in school-based suicide prevention and intervention. However, there are many barriers to school-based suicide prevention, with myths about suicide being one of the most dangerous and significant barrier. The goal of the current study was to …
From Myplate To Mcteacher's Night : A Communication-Centered And Ecological Investigation Of Nutrition Education In Middle School : A Case Study, Crystal Lee Brandow
From Myplate To Mcteacher's Night : A Communication-Centered And Ecological Investigation Of Nutrition Education In Middle School : A Case Study, Crystal Lee Brandow
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
We have an undeniable awareness about the rates of obesity in our country, and we know that rates of obesity among children and youth are higher than ever. In fact, this is predicted to be the first generation of children who will not live longer than their parents. An abundance of research has identified the challenges and the causes of childhood obesity, and even proposed solutions for addressing this growing public health concern. One of the suggested solutions, or at least preventative measures, involves schools playing an active role in combating the obesity epidemic through the provision of nutrition interventions. …
Gender : Impacts On Participation In Elected Local Government, Kathleen Kt Tobin
Gender : Impacts On Participation In Elected Local Government, Kathleen Kt Tobin
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The purpose of this research is to analyze women’s underrepresentation in elected local government and to explore the particular constraints associated with this type of political participation. Understanding why there is a dearth of women in elected office, with a focus on actual barriers to entry at the local level, is critical because the lack of gender balanced representation has serious implications for the way our democracy functions and has significant consequences for citizens because of the resultant effects on governance and quality of life. Theorists have identified cultural, political, and social impediments to women's participation in politics, and this …
A Qualitative Analysis Of Clinician Attitudes And Experiences Learning And Implementing Transdiagnostic Evidence-Based Practices For Eating Disorders, Jennifer Marie Oswald
A Qualitative Analysis Of Clinician Attitudes And Experiences Learning And Implementing Transdiagnostic Evidence-Based Practices For Eating Disorders, Jennifer Marie Oswald
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Clinician experiences with the implementation of new practices are important factors in facilitating the use of new treatment models and evidence-based practices (EBPs). As such, they provide crucial information to behavioral health dissemination and implementation research. Qualitative interviewing allows researchers to learn from clinician experiences with greater depth and nuance. The present study qualitatively analyzed 8 clinicians’ experiences with the implementation of a new transdiagnostic treatment model for eating disorders (ED) at an intensive residential treatment center. Participating clinicians completed a semi-structured interview based on constructs from the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), an organizing framework with demonstrated utility …
Modalities And Citizen Bribe Offers : The Case Of Post-Soviet Corruption, Turkhan Sadigov
Modalities And Citizen Bribe Offers : The Case Of Post-Soviet Corruption, Turkhan Sadigov
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This work analyzes relatively neglected side of corruption ‒ population bribe offers (as opposed to bureaucrats' bribe demand). The regional focus of the work is on the post-Soviet space, with Azerbaijan, Estonia and Russia as case studies. Drawing on all relevant theories and variables of corruption research, the manuscript emphasizes the importance of ideational factors of corruption in addition to material variables. To analyze ideational factors, the research introduces methodological innovation ‒ the concept of archetypal Modalities. The main argument of the work is that traditionalist value orientations (Local, Symbol and Passive modalities) are statistically significant in predicting the incidence …

Supporting Spatial Orientation : Using Resizable Icons To Visualize Distant Landmarks On Mobile Phones, Jiayan Zhao
Supporting Spatial Orientation : Using Resizable Icons To Visualize Distant Landmarks On Mobile Phones, Jiayan Zhao
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Mobile phones have become so popular in navigation. Empirical studies, however, have implied several pitfalls of using these mobile systems. First of all, the small size of the mobile screen fragmentizes the map information so that users have to interact with the display frequently for fear of disorientation. In addition, generated navigation guides with continuous displays of routing information relieves users’ cognitive load, but the excessive reliance on the displayed spatial information keeps the users being mindless of the environment that impacts their acquisition of spatial knowledge. Later, landmarks as important referents were suggested to help users integrate the current …
Jakaltek Identity And The Fiesta Maya In Jupiter, Florida : Ethnic Belonging, Community, And Home, Maria M. Diaz Montejo
Jakaltek Identity And The Fiesta Maya In Jupiter, Florida : Ethnic Belonging, Community, And Home, Maria M. Diaz Montejo
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
As immigration increasingly becomes a divisive issue in US politics and political measures are implemented to ensure safe borders, immigrants must find ways to avoid deportation. They must also find ways to support each other and maintain a sense of identity as their presence in the USA continues to be challenged and threatened. My research on Jakaltek migrants in Jupiter, Florida concentrates on Jakaltek migrant reconceptualization of home at the same time that they engage in identity politics that challenge a singular understanding of ethnic belonging. How Jakalteks react to their experiences in Jupiter as (mostly undocumented) migrants suggests that …
The Effects Of Economic Factors On The Out-Of-Home Placement For Neglected Children, Mi Jin Choi
The Effects Of Economic Factors On The Out-Of-Home Placement For Neglected Children, Mi Jin Choi
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
U.S. child welfare services provides children who cannot be cared for by their families with out-of-home (OOH) care, which is temporary residential care outside of a child’s original home. Economic factors are critical in making consistent OOH placement decisions due to their relationship with child development and safety.

Children's Response To Pediatric Continuous Glucose Monitoring (Cgm) Sensor Insertion : The Role Of Intervention And Individual Differences, Kristen M. Uhl
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Research indicates that nonpharmacological interventions are effective at reducing pain and distress during pediatric procedures. Certified child life specialists often perform these interventions. However, child life delivered procedural interventions have not been well studied in outpatient settings. Additionally, while characteristics that influence pediatric distress levels are known, their impact on procedural response in the presence of nonpharmacological interventions is not fully understood. In particular, the contribution of temperamental negative affect (NA) and effortful control (EC) are relatively unstudied in this context. The present study examined procedural response in a sample of 28 diabetic children and adolescents aged 2-18 years undergoing …
Workplace Attachment Among Social Workers In The Veteran Health Care Sector : A Mixed Methods Study, Michael Lawrence Clarkson-Hendrix
Workplace Attachment Among Social Workers In The Veteran Health Care Sector : A Mixed Methods Study, Michael Lawrence Clarkson-Hendrix
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study expanded the application of attachment theory, referred to as workplace attachment theory in this study, to investigate worker behavior, principally in relation to retention and turnover among social workers in a Veteran health care sector agency. Interdisciplinary collaboration, including whether it was related to workplace attachment, was also a significant feature. Three main aims were to identify (i) workplace attachment experiences; (ii) relational, social and physical contingencies that affected workplace attachment security; and (iii) the extent to which workplace attachment is influenced by interdisciplinary collaboration. Using a sample of social workers, a mixed methods research design involving a …
Exploring The Association Between Perceived Safety Of Household Children In The Neigborhood And Levels Of Depressive Symptoms Among Spanish Speaking Latina Adults Living In A High Crime, Low Income Neigbhorhood, Randall Stetson
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Previous research has confirmed that neighborhood level social factors (e.g. crime, safety) present chronic stressors that increase risk for depression in residents of economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. U.S. Latinos experience higher levels of poverty and thus are more likely to live in poor neighborhoods. In this study it was hypothesized that adult Latina women who reported (1) higher levels of worry regarding the general safety of their household children in the neighborhood, (2) higher levels of worry regarding influence of bad friends on their household children, and (3) higher levels of worry regarding their household children being exposed to drugs and …

Reduced Conscious Recollection And Its Detection In Three Performance Validity Tests : A Dual Task Interference Investigation, Graham Michael Silk-Eglit
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Performance validity is an essential component of neuropsychological assessment. Research suggests that examinees with specific neurological conditions cannot successfully complete certain performance validity tests (PVTs). However, very little basic research has explored the information processing underlying performance on PVTs that might explain why these examinees fail certain PVTs. The current study used a dual task interference paradigm to isolate the impact of reducing conscious recollection on the performance of three PVTs, the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM), Victoria Symptom Validity Test (VSVT), and Word Memory Test (WMT). One-hundred-and-twenty-six non-clinical undergraduate research participants were administered these three PVTs as part of …
Dynamic Politics : Necessity, Founding, And (Re)Founding In Machiavelli's Discourses On Livy, Vincent John Commisso
Dynamic Politics : Necessity, Founding, And (Re)Founding In Machiavelli's Discourses On Livy, Vincent John Commisso
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation is an attempt to recast the political thought of Niccolò Machiavelli in his Discourses on Livy in a far more radical light than it has been previously understood. Rather than trying to overcome fortune, I argue that Machiavelli was encouraging political actors to embrace it by embracing the force which fortune generates: necessity. Along with this orientation towards fortune and necessity, Machiavelli also was engaging in an additional subversive project: the systematic undermining of the conventional republican wisdom of his predecessors and his contemporaries. On a practical level, the necessity central to Machiavelli’s thought is that of “founding,” …
Essays On Investigating And Modeling Household Wealth Distribution Determinants, Yunan Lu
Essays On Investigating And Modeling Household Wealth Distribution Determinants, Yunan Lu
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
I investigate and model wealth distribution determinants both empirically and theoretically. In "An Investigation of the Process for U.S. Household Wealth", I use panel-structured Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) data to investigate the stochastic process for U.S. household wealth, based on a model that includes a common age-dependent component, a permanent heterogeneous component, and a dynamic component. Using the estimated wealth process, I decompose the dispersion in household wealth at each age generated between the different stochastic mechanisms. The estimated household wealth process can then be used to validate theoretical models of wealth inequality. The experiment conducted in this …

"Porque Tienen Mucho Derecho" : Parteras, Biomedical Training And The Vernacularization Of Human Rights In Chiapas, Mounia El Kotni
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This doctoral research stems from thirteen months of ethnographic fieldwork in the Mexican State of Chiapas. Chiapas is one of the regions with the highest maternal mortality rates in the country. To comply with international development goals to lower maternal mortality rates, indigenous midwives are trained in detecting risk factors in pregnancy and birth, while women are encouraged to give birth in hospitals. This dissertation sheds light on the impact of such policies on poor women's access to reproductive health care and Mayan midwives' practices. Over the course of my research, I utilized the methodology of participant-observation and conducted in-depth …
Does Distrust Aid Network Management In A Regulatory Policy Context? : A Study On A Local Hydraulic Fracturing Policy Network In New York State, Jeongyoon Lee
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study examines factors that explain the structure of a regulatory policy with a particular focus on how distrust plays a role in shaping the structure of a regulatory policy network. Understanding the mechanisms that explain the structure of policy networks has been an important subject in the era of collaboration. However, previous research have almost exclusively studied network structures in the context of social service policies. Little is known about what factors explain network structures in the context of regulatory policies where policy decision-making processes end up being challenged in court or the competing groups tend to manipulate scientific …
