No. 22: The Return Of Food: Poverty And Urban Food Security In Zimbabwe After The Crisis, Godfrey Tawodzera, Liam Riley, Jonathan Crush
African Food Security Urban Network
The nadir of Zimbabwe’s political and economic crisis in 2008 coincided with the implementation of a baseline household food security survey in Harare by AFSUN. This survey found that households in lowincome urban areas in Zimbabwe’s capital were far worse off in terms of all the food insecurity and poverty indicators than households in the other 10 Southern African cities surveyed by AFSUN. The central question addressed in this report is whether food security in Zimbabwe’s urban centres has improved. AFSUN conducted a follow-up survey in 2012 that allows for direct longitudinal comparisons of continuity and change. The status of …
Age-Related Differences In Moral Identity Across Adulthood, Tobias Krettenauer, Andrea Lourdes Murua, Fanli Jia
Age-Related Differences In Moral Identity Across Adulthood, Tobias Krettenauer, Andrea Lourdes Murua, Fanli Jia
Psychology Faculty Publications
In this study, age-related differences in adults' moral identity were investigated. Moral identity was conceptualized a context-dependent self-structure that becomes differentiated and (re)integrated in the course of development and that involves a broad range of value-orientations. Based on a cross-sectional sample of 252 participants aged 14 to 65 years (148 women, M = 33.5 years, SD = 16.9) and a modification of the Good Self Assessment, it was demonstrated that mean-level of moral identity (averaged across the contexts of family, school/work and community) significantly increased in the adult years, whereas cross-context differentiation showed a non-linear trend peaking at the age …

Academic Art Museum and Library Summit (Coral Gables: January 2016)
This paper reports on the findings of a working summit hosted by the University of Miami in January 2016 at which the administrative heads of art museums and libraries from fourteen academic institutions convened to explore the barriers to—and opportunities for—deeper intra-institutional museum-library collaborations. The summit was jointly funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Samuel H. Kress Foundation and featured presentations by thought-leaders in the academic galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAM) sector. This paper presents a summary of the work, discussions, and outcomes of the summit including recommendations for further effort in the following areas: (1) …
Food Store Choice Of Poor Households: A Discrete Choice Analysis Of The National Household Food Acquisition And Purchase Survey, Sofia B. Villas-Boas, Rebecca Taylor
Food Store Choice Of Poor Households: A Discrete Choice Analysis Of The National Household Food Acquisition And Purchase Survey, Sofia B. Villas-Boas, Rebecca Taylor
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
Policymakers are pursing initiatives to increase food access for low-income households. However, due in part to previous data deficiencies, there is still little evidence supporting the assumption that improved food store access will alter dietary habits, especially for the poorest of U.S. households. This article uses the new National Household Food Acquisition and Purchase Survey (FoodAPS) to estimate consumer food outlet choices as a function of outlet type and household attributes in a multinomial mixed logit. In particular, we allow for the composition of the local retail food environment to play a role in explaining household store choice decisions and …

The Effect Of Food Price On Food Insecurity And Diet Quality: Exploring Potential Moderating Roles Of Snap And Consumer Competency, Yunhee Chang, Jinhee Kim, Swarn Chatterjee
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
Higher food prices may aggravate household food insecurity and hurt diet quality. Using a sample of low-income households from the National Household Food Acquisition and Purchase Survey (FoodAPS), this study examines whether local food prices affect food insecurity and nutritional quality of foods acquired, and how households use competent consumer behaviors to mitigate any adverse effects of price. Financial management practices, nutrition literacy, and conscientious food shopping practices were considered for consumer competency. Our findings indicate that low-income households in higher-cost areas, regardless of whether they participate in SNAP or not, are more likely to adopt loyalty or other store …

Does Love Influence Athletic Performance? The Perspectives Of Olympic Athletes, Kelly Campbell, Cheyenne Hosseini, Kelly Myers, Nina Calub
Does Love Influence Athletic Performance? The Perspectives Of Olympic Athletes, Kelly Campbell, Cheyenne Hosseini, Kelly Myers, Nina Calub
Psychology Faculty Publications
In this brief report, we provide an initial account of the association between love and athletic performance from the perspective of Olympic athletes. We posit that Romantic Passionate Love (RPL) and athletic performance may both involve the reward-motivation system of the brain. Based on this premise, we explored whether activation in one domain (love) might influence the other (sport). Our investigation was framed using Sternberg’s triangular theory of love. Twenty Olympic athletes representing different sports were interviewed at the Games. Most athletes (n = 15) reported that their performance was better while in love; however, qualitative responses suggested that the …

A New Economic Growth Theory #2: How To Overcome An Obstacle To Economic Growth, Paul Kim
Economics Papers and Presentations
In this paper the author will establish the hypothesis that the fluctuation of GDP depends on labor mobility. The author bases this on the fact that economic research pointed out that the US had the highest labor mobility among 7 advanced nations when the US achieved the highest labor productivity growth rate. A nation with lesser labor mobility had a lower GDP. The purpose of this paper is to explain how true the hypothesis is from a single nation's perspective using the US economy as a case study.

Exploring Collaborative Stewardship Of Government Information In The Southeast: The Aserl Collaborative Federal Depository Program, Heath Martin, Cheryle Cole-Bennett, Sandra Mcaninch
Library Faculty Publications
There has long been great interest in the “collaborative stewardship” of federal government information among library deans and directors and documents librarians in the southeastern United States, who seek a new vision for managing federal depository collections that focuses on local needs and interests while also supporting these collections as a regional asset. In 2006 the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL) took steps toward realizing a collaborative model of stewardship by establishing its first program to explore options for cooperative services and collection management of tangible federal government publications. This initiative was fueled both by concerns about diminished public …

Sectoral Herding: Evidence From An Emerging Market, Esin Cakan, Aram Balagyozyan
Economics & Business Analytics Faculty Publications
This study examines herding behavior in all industrial sectors of the Turkish stock market. Applying the methodology of Chang et al. (2000) to the Turkish sectoral daily stock prices from 2002 to 2014, we found strong evidence of herding. This evidence did not disappear even after we controlled for market regimes and firm fundamentals. Investor herding is asymmetric in all sectors; even though herding is prevalent in both rising and falling markets, it is more pronounced in rising markets. In the financial, services, and technology sectors herding is detected only in the highly volatile markets. In contrast, in low-volatility markets …
Climate Change And Its Impact On Wheat Production In Kansas, Joshua C. Howard, Esin Cakan, Kamal Upadhyaya
Climate Change And Its Impact On Wheat Production In Kansas, Joshua C. Howard, Esin Cakan, Kamal Upadhyaya
Economics & Business Analytics Faculty Publications
This paper studies the effect of climate change on wheat production in Kansas using annual time series data from 1949 to 2014. For the study, an error correction model is developed in which the price of wheat, the price of oats (substitute good), average annual temperature and average annual precipitation are used as explanatory variables with total output of wheat being the dependent variable. Time series properties of the data series are diagnosed using unit root and cointegration tests. The estimated results suggest that Kansas farmers are supply responsive to both wheat as well as its substitute (oat) prices in …
Do Employees Want To Work For Authentic And Vulnerable Leaders And What Prevents Leaders From Going There, Annette R. Abel
Do Employees Want To Work For Authentic And Vulnerable Leaders And What Prevents Leaders From Going There, Annette R. Abel
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Studies have shown that most employees want to work for vulnerable and authentic leaders. Many leaders do not want to show their personal side of their lives and what they face as a leader. Some leaders are fearful they will look weak or too emotional if they show their true thoughts and emotions and are willing for others to see them. Vulnerability is taking emotional risks, where people can see who you really are. Leaders have the power to make a positive impact and sometimes want to make decisions without making connections with their employees. Some leaders do not have …

Toward The Resistant Reading Of Information: Google, Resistant Spectatorship, And Critical Information Literacy, Eamon Tewell
Toward The Resistant Reading Of Information: Google, Resistant Spectatorship, And Critical Information Literacy, Eamon Tewell
Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications
The theory of resistant spectatorship posits that individuals interacting with media and information may have the agency or power to oppose, reject, or reassemble the message they encounter instead of passively accepting it. This study puts resistant spectatorship in conversation with information literacy and critiques one example of a dominant information discovery system, Google Search, from a “resistant” position. Additionally, this study argues that, within academic libraries, the practice of critical information literacy, a pedagogical approach aligned with the concept of resistant spectatorship, is an ideal mode for encouraging students to become resistant readers of information in its increasingly corporate-mediated …

Authority And Source Evaluation In The Critical Library Classroom, Eamon Tewell, Katelyn Angell
Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications
These lesson plans began with a desire to explore notions of authority in the library classroom at our mid-sized urban university, including how authority is used by teachers to the benefit or detriment of learners and how learners can begin to reclaim their own authority. In creating these lesson plans, we sought to begin with students’ experiences, promote their sense of personal empowerment, and encourage them to consider the complexities of source evaluation.

Access To Physical Media In Academic Libraries: From Policy Review To Action Plan, Rachel King
Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications
Streaming video is becoming the preferred means of viewing video for consumers, but physical formats do continue to offer libraries certain advantages: greater variety of choice for patrons at a lower cost. Many academic libraries have invested heavily in DVD collections, and these videos may be housed in closed stacks that satisfy some stakeholders but that discourage use and do not meet student needs or expectations. This article provides a framework for deciding whether or not to open up a closed collection, and uses the author’s library’s closed-stack collection as a case study.

Preschooler Digital Usage And Visual Spatial Performance: Implications For The Classroom, Kathleen Keefe-Cooperman
Faculty of Counseling & Development Publications
This research to practice paper summarizes a study focused on typically developing preschooler’s integrated technology usage. Different amounts of usage were found based on parental education, ethnic/racial identity, and SES. Television viewing patterns from a 2010 study were also compared to a 2014 group of children. Preschoolers from the 2014 group were watching similar amounts of television, but also had increased technological device usage. Children had greater total screen time than in the past. Lower maternal education, lower SES, and being from a historically disadvantaged background were associated with greater usage time. Preschoolers with higher reported digital media usage had …

Digital Media And Preschoolers: Implications For Visual Spatial Development, Kathleen Keefe-Cooperman
Faculty of Counseling & Development Publications
Preschoolers’ integrated technology usage was examined related to cognitive and visual spatial functioning. The participants consisted of 492 typically developing preschool children. Parent/caregiver reports of children’s television viewing and digital technology usage, and WPPSI-IV intelligence scale scores and Visual Spatial Composite scores were examined. Preschoolers’ screen time was also compared to a previous 2010 group to look for changes in television viewing patterns following an increase in digital device usage. The results provide evidence of an interaction between digital media usage and visual spatial abilities. Preschoolers with higher reported digital media usage had lower WPPSIIV Visual Spatial Composite scores and …
Isis And Philae, Eahr Joan
Isis And Philae, Eahr Joan
Re-Genesis Encyclopedia
Ancient Philae, temple site of black Isis (Ese) in Nubia, encompasses a rich and fascinating archaeomythological study. Although the temple fell into alien hands, goddess Isis’ power not only continued for over three millennia in Egypt, but also “her worship grew during the Hellenistic period (when she was conflated with the Great Mother of the Greeks, Demeter), then continued into the Roman Era, and finally was adapted to Christian needs.” (HLW: 13.) Reginald Eldred Witt notes that the “veneration (hyperdulia) of the Blessed Virgin Mary was certainly introduced at about the same time as Theodosius ordered the destruction of …

Recently, there have been many mass murders of innocent people in various places. We found simple, quick, reliable method of detecting those potential murderers. These potential murderers can be screened from pupils of facial photographs used for various application forms in less than 4 min. by finding large negative value of (-)9~(-)12 of abnormal opening (-) of non-invasive O-Ring Test in one or both sides of the pupil, using BDORT which received US patent in 1993. Presence or absence of microorganism infection can be screened non-invasively by the use of broad-spectrum anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal agent within 3 min. An …
